Going There to Contemplate the Hereby Fr. John Marconi

At the end of February I returned from my third pilgrimage to the Holy Land, the Land of Israel. Jacob, whose father was Isaac, the son of Abraham, would become knownas Israel. He, with his 12 sons, would spread out to claim the land flowing with Milk andHoney, this land is Holy.

For us in our Christian Faith, this land is Holy becauseit is where Jesus was born, where he spent most of hisyears. O Jesus, I pray for Yourfaithful and ferventpriests; for Yourunfaithful and tepidpriests; for Your priestslaboring at home orabroad in distant missionfields; for Your temptedpriests; for Your lonelyand desolate priests; forYour young priests; forYour dying priests; forthe souls of Your priestsin purgatory.

But above all,I recommend to Youthe priests dearestto me; the priest whobaptized me; the priestswho absolved me frommy sins; the priests atwhose masses Iassisted and who gaveme Your Body and Bloodin Holy Communion; thepriests who taught andinstructed me; all thepriests to whom I amindebted in any otherway. O Jesus, keep themall close to Your heart, and bless them abun-dantly in time and ineternity. Amen.

Transfiguration. In celebrating the Mass, the prayers stated, Here Jesus was transfiguredbefore Peter, James and John. It is humbling to be in the place where this event of ourfaith took place. Or again, in Nazareth, in the Church of Annunciation, Here the angelGabriel appeared to Mary. While praying the creed is proclaimed, Here the Word ofGod became flesh. It was humbling to be in this Holy Place where the mystery of theIncarnation began.

It is very humbling to pray in these Holy Places, yet isn’t it true that the Lord is withus, and where God is, it is Holy. We don’t have to go to the Holy Land to experience thepresence of Jesus. Here at Our Lady of Holy Souls, around the Altar, near the Tabernacle- Jesus is Here. And just as Mary said yes to the God and the Holy Spirit, our yes is justas important to bring Jesus presence here and now.

Grateful Stewards of God’s Gifts . . .by Laura G. Humphries, CT

Parish Life & Stewardship Director

They stripped off his clothes and threw a scarlet military cloak about him. Weaving acrown out of thorns, they placed it on his head, and a reed in his right hand. Andkneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” They spatupon him and took the reed and kept striking him on the head. And when they hadmocked him, they stripped him of the cloak, dressed him in his own clothes, and ledhim off to crucify him. Matthew 27: 28-31

I read a story recently about a teacher who donated a kidney to one of her formerstudents. This tremendous act of selflessness came about because the young person hadlost most of the function of his kidneys due to an illness. Literally, that teacher gave thegift of life to someone who wasn’t her own child or another family member. This iscertainly radical stewardship. How far would you go to give of yourself so that anothermight live? Would you have to love him or her like your own child or parent? No one candeny it would be a difficult decision, especially if you’re giving put your own health atrisk.

Reflecting on these things helps to provide some perspective on the crucifixion ofJesus. Not only did he suffer tremendously at the hands of the Romans, he gave his lifefor us so we might live forever. What does true stewardship look like? The cross is asymbol to us of total surrender. When we are called to give of ourselves in ordinary waysin daily life, we sometimes hesitate and think twice. Perhaps we are unsure, we shouldlook to the cross and there we can find our strength. And then when the call comes totruly sacrifice and place our trust in God, we may have already developed a lifestyle thatmakes responding, “Yes,” that much easier.

An excerpt from Everyday Stewardship, Living An Extraordinary Life

I have to admit that I use the phrase “we should look to the cross and there we canfind our strength” with my grandchildren when they whine about doing something that ishard or painful. It sometimes works and sometimes not. When I look at the cross and seeJesus there, I feel pain and sorrow that he had to die for us and in such a horrific way. Itcertainly is a motivating factor for me to be a better person, a better Catholic.

Being good stewards is a calling, a responsibility as Catholic Christians. We mustanswer our call with a resounding “YES”. There are obvious ways that we can answer. We need Eucharistic Ministers, Ushers and Lectors at Mass. These are ministries that wecan fill when we come to Mass. It is easy to train, all we need to do is make an appoint-ment and it can happen. If you are a Catholic in good standing and attend Mass everyweekend, please call the church office and make an appointment to train to become aminister. We need you. This doesn’t require too much of a sacrifice, but it does requiregiving of yourself.

Please pardon the mess and construction throughout the summer months on the campus. It is going to be a busy place and there will be several projects being completed thissummer. The school will be installing a new elevator and we will be constructing a newdriveway and carpool lane for the Allen Center. We hope to experience little disruptionover the summer months for the weekend masses, but please be patient while we haveconstruction at I street and around the front circle area. Please check with the staff ifyou are attending summer camps or summer care programs at the school, as the drop offand pick up procedures will be different this summer because of the construction. Thankyou to all who donated to the capital campaign for helping us achieve our goals andimprove the campus. We are very thankful for each and every one of the donations nomatter what the amount. If you have still not given, please prayerfully consider how youcan help Holy Souls reach our goal to complete the remainder of the projects on the list.We have not reached our goal, and every contribution helps. Thank you all for yourconsideration. We want to wish everyone a blessed and joyous summer season.

A New Paradigm on the HorizonHoly Souls School has always been committed to offering a faith-filled environment

while striving for academic excellence. With great intention, the teachers and studentsare dedicated to instilling timeless values while embracing progressive teaching strategies. Balancing timeless and timely instruction is a top priority.

In an effort to achieve this balance the school is making two major enhancementsfor the 2019-2020 school year. Both of which intend to better meet the social, emotional, and academic needs of all students at Holy Souls School.

Moving forward a transformation of the traditional library and computer lab willtake place. Both capacities add value to the education of our students, however as wesee a shift in technology use and research, it only makes sense to prioritize the expectationsand purpose of these areas. We will be combining the library and the computer labbeginning in the 2019-2020 school year to make way for our new Innovative MediaCenter. Barbie Johnston will be transitioning out of her role as a 2nd Grade teacher, andwill be the new Media Specialist. We are eager to see the growth this brings to alllearners.

Our second priority for the 2019-2020 school year, is to establish and implement aSocial and Emotional Learning Curriculum for Prek-8th Grades. Social and emotionallearning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manageemotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establishand maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Emotionalintelligence skills are key for academic and lifelong success. By integrating socialemotional learning (SEL) as a central pillar of our school, the students and educatorswill develop and practice emotional intelligence skills. Attention to SEL helps everyonein a school setting develop 21st century skills for deepening awareness, choice, andpurpose. SEL helps to create a school climate that is a great place to learn. To date wehave implemented an on-site therapy dog, Dude! He visits our school each Monday andtours the classrooms. He also mingles with the students while playing at recess. In theupcoming year our school will adopt the Conscious Discipline model. ConsciousDiscipline is an evidence-based, trauma-informed approach to classroom management. It provides an array of behavior management strategies and classroom structures thatteachers can use to turn everyday situations into learning opportunities.

We feel strongly that with the implementation of both enrichments, our school’smission will only beenhanced. Our goal isto continually build onthe rich, 100-yearfoundation, that manyhave worked tirelesslyto create. Together, wewill continue to provideoutstanding educationalopportunities andacademic excellencethrough Christ for all ofour students.

Goodbyes aren’t always FarewellsBy Samantha Denefe

Over the last several months the Lord has been showing me a specific image duringmy prayer time. It’s an image of a field. It’s large with beautiful rust colored soil, alreadytilled and worked through. At the edge of the field are ploughs hooked up to the horsesand ready to go, with people standing next to them. Soon it will be time to plough andplant the seeds.

As you have probably heard by now, I am stepping down as Director of Evangelizationand Faith Formation. God is calling me to spend more time in my primary vocation aswife and mother. This discernment has been a long process with lots of tears. I love thisjob and community, but God is calling me to be home more. Over the last four years myprayer has consistently been “Lord make us a City on a Hill, a light for the world to see”and I sense God is doing and about to do even more amazing things in this community.

While my job here was to prep the soil, God is calling someone new to this positionto help plant the seeds. You, who are taking the time to read this, I feel He may be callingyou to help with this next step is parish renewal.

Over the last four years we have implemented small faith communities throughEvangelical Catholic programs, the Sunday Series, Walking with Purpose, Prayer Retreats,Alpha, and worked with our leadership on assessing our current culture. There has beenso much spiritual growth and fruit. I gave all I could to the Lord in this job, and haveloved it so much. Now He is calling me to give all I can as a wife, mother, and parishionerat Holy Souls.

Thank you for walking with me on my faith journey, and allowing me to walk withyou over the last four years. You have deeply impacted my life. I look forward to stillseeing you at Mass. Goodbye as your Director of Evangelization, hello as a fellowparishioner!

“Do not be conquered by evil, but conquer evil with good” Romans 12:21

Fr. Patrick Friend spoke at the beginning of Lenton Repentance.

By Denise Dumars, Coordinator of Youth Ministry

The events of this past spring included the CYMStations of the Cross, the St. Patrick’s Dance, a Sun-day brunch event followed by a Scavenger Hunt,Tiny Saints fundraising, our annual Seder Dinnerand Senior Farewell. We have added some newgames to our collection at the Benedict House andhave had fun learning and playing them together. While the spring sailed by smoothly, the youth andCore Team tested and tweaked Life Teen for ourgroup. We are looking forward to the summer monthsand all our activities!

With finals around the corner, the BenedictHouse was open that week (May 20, 21, & 22) forthe teens to once again come prepare. “Coffee andCramming” provided a cozy place to study and havesome snacks while providing WiFi. Now, it’s on tothe summer!

May 29 we welcomeed the upcoming freshmento an evening of icebreakers and the chance to mixand mingle as well as pray together at the BenedictHouse (6-8 pm). The freshmen has the opportunityto sign up for Buffalo Float Trip and the McGeheeMission Trip.

The Buffalo Float Trip has a retreat/camp at-mosphere. Fr. Neil Pezzulo, a Glenmary priest fromCincinnati, Ohio once again joined us and provideddaily Mass. We have a few hikes prepared, explor-ing in a cave, as well as the actual day of floating onthe Buffalo River. The Buffalo Lodge in Jasper pro-vides a great retreat environment for relaxing, spend-ing quiet time with God, fellowship with friends, and sharing meals. The dates are June 17-20.

Icebreaker games before a Junior High Meeting.

Senior High Game Night

The McGehee Mission trip will run from June 22-27. A McGehee parishioner linesup some great community projects for the teens and always included is sprucing up the St.Mary’s parish yard and a thorough cleaning of the Church itself. We also try to includesome history lessons while in the area. A trip to the Japanese Internment Camp may be onthe agenda as well as Arkansas Post. For sure we are meeting Fr. Warren Harvey at St.Mary Church in Plum Bayou, Pine Bluff (the oldest Catholic Church in the state) for a

history as well as faith sharing experience. Also in the works is attending the

Steubenville Conference in Springfield, Mis-souri. Though we attended the Dallas one lastyear, the venue and accommodations are muchbetter at the Missouri State University Cam-pus, and that really plays a significant role inthe spiritual experience. We will be travelingwith Immaculate Conception Parish in mid-July.

A mission trip is also in the works for NewOrleans, Louisiana. Many of the teens haven’tbeen to this part of the world, so besides ex-periencing the fruits of service, the differentculture will also provide a learning experience. Most of our work will be indoors (it’ll be July!),and we will receive evening spiritual directionfrom Sister Teresa Daly, a Vincentian Daugh-ter of Charity, who had spent some time work-ing in Arkansas. We also have a day of funplanned!

Six teens will be attending a week longLife Teen Camp in early August in Tiger, Geor-gia. The experience should be awesome andincludes some white water rafting.

Between all these events, be sure to checkthe bulletin for local service opportunities withCYM, game and movie nights, as well as lookinto the programs organized by our Diocese.C2Si, July 8-12 provides 9-12 graders thechance to learn about Catholic social justiceteachings as well as gain hands-on experienceworking in our community. There is also aSEARCH Retreat June 28-30.

Please pray for our teens and our adultvolunteers. Pray also for those teens whoaren’t involved in the Catholic Youth Ministryprogram that they are encouraged by theirfamilies and friends to be a part of the Bodyof Christ here at Holy Souls.

UPDATESBy Caroline France, President

Altar Society has had a great year, with our wine tasting in January, and anothersuccessful Mardi Gras event in the books! We also relaxed and sipped margaritas whileplaying games over Spring Break with a game night where the ladies’ guessing, and clue-giving skills were put to the test during “Fish Bowl”.

In April, Laura Woford presented her beautiful Divine Mercy painting to our group, along with a short background and devotional. Please be on the lookout for her piece inthe church sanctuary, which has been generously donated by Laura and her family, inhopes that our Parish never forgets the loving mercy that God is continuously showeringdown on each of us.

Please join us for our next meeting on September 17, 2019 at 6:30pm in the ParishHall. We hope to see you all there!

ATTENTION ALL PARISHIONERS!

While the Holy Souls Altar Society has a long history of throwing an elaborate MardiGras event every year before the beginning of lent, we will be taking a pause from hostingthis staple event in 2020. However, we are so excited to introduce two new events tohelp raise funds for our parish!

Holy SewsWork Days

Please join us for anincredible experience. You don’t have to sew

or knit. We have lots ofways you can contributeto making our beautiful

layettes.

We meetfrom 1:30 to 4:30at the Holy Souls

Parish Hallon the following dates:

Sunday, March 10Sunday, April 14Sunday, May 19

Even if you can’t staythe entire time,we welcome

your participation.

You Are Made to Make a DifferenceEmbrace every opportunity to do so.

By: Regina Binz and Mary Sue Whitelaw

Giving is not just about making a donation. It’s about making a difference. And,that’s what giving to Holy Sews is all about – making a difference. A mother whoreceived one of our layettes for her baby boy born too soon shared the following testimonywith us:

“I wanted to reach out to you and say thank you for what you do. You not only gave myson something but you gave me something as well. My son was born on 4/24/19 butwas born sleeping. He was 19 weeks. What you do is absolutely beautiful. We get nobirth certificate because he was born sleeping; he gets no death certificate because he istoo small. He did receive what you had made and it touched my heart unbelievably so.It might not seem like much to some but it was everything to me. Thank you.”

So, to those of you who gave in someway to our April Showers campaign - be itthread, fabric, trim, a gift card – yourgesture made a difference. Thank you forbelieving in our mission and for steppingup to our table to take a raindrop off ofthe tree and return it in the form of atreasured gift. We are grateful.

Holy Sews was recently the recipientof a $1,250 grant from First Electric Trustas a part of their Operation Round-Up charitable donation program. Regina Binz, CindyStabnick, Sarah Alexander and Mary Sue Whitelaw met with members of First Electric’smarketing department recently for a check presentation. Regina told her story and webrought layettes to show them exactly what they are funding. They were so impressedwith the Holy Sews mission that they encouraged us to apply every year.

We continue to sew with lovein every stitch and we sow theblessings of knowing thatsomewhere in one of over 400hospitals that we serve, with thehelp of our volunteers, donors andsupporters, we have all partneredtogether to ease someone’s distress,to bring some semblance ofcomfort, to dress someone’sprecious baby with honor anddignity, and to make a difference.
