Understanding My Value ToMy Church Community
Laura Humphries, Parish Life Coordinator
The Big Choice
If you don’t want to serve the Lord, you must choosefor yourselves today whom you will serv. Joshua 24:15
God’s invitation is clear and nonnegotiable. He givesus all and we give him all. Simple and absolute. He isclear in what he asks and clear in what he offers. Thechoice is up to us. Isn’t it incredible that God leavesthe choice to us? Think about it. There are many thingsin life we can’t choose. We can’t for example, choosethe weather. We can’t control the economy. We can’tchoose whether or not we are born with a big nose orblue eyes or a lot of hair. We can’t even choose howpeople respond to us.
But we can choose where we spend eternity. The bigchoice, God leaves to us. The critical decision is ours. That is the only decision which really matters. An excerpt from Grace for the Moment by Max Lucado
How we choose to live; how we conduct our dailybusiness will determine what happens to us on ourjudgment day. It is clearly up to us. Our God is all lovingand forgiving; which is a good thing for me and for all.

FEAST DAY: June 22PATRON SAINT: Lawyers & Religious Freedom
St. Thomas More was born in London in 1478. After athorough grounding in religion and the classics, heentered Oxford to study law. Upon leaving the universityhe embarked on a legal career which took him toParliament.
A wit and a reformer, this learned man numbered Bishopsand scholars among his friends, and by 1516 wrote hisworld-famous book “Utopia”. He attracted the attention ofHenry VIII who appointed him to a succession of highposts and missions, and finally made him LordChancellor in 1529. However, he resigned in 1532, at theheight of his career and reputation, when Henry persistedin holding his own opinions regarding marriage and thesupremacy of the Pope.
The rest of his life was spent in writing mostly in defenseof the Church. In 1534, with his close friend, St. JohnFisher, he refused to render allegiance to the King as theHead of the Church of England and was confined to theTower. Fifteen months later, and nine days after St. JohnFisher’s execution, he was tried and convicted of treason. He told the court that he could not go against hisconscience and wished his judges that “we may yethereafter in heaven merrily all meet together toeverlasting salvation.” And on the scaffold, he told thecrowd of spectators that he was dying as “the King’sgood servant-but God’s first.” He was beheaded on July6, 1535. His feast day is June 22nd.
