The major news outlets (sometimes called mainstream media) tells us that the nation is divided and polarized. This appears to be true, and the news media has a major influence on polarizing the country especially following the recent election. Twenty years ago Americans got their news and a lot of their entertain- ment from major city newspapers and three national TV and radio networks. We like to believe that these information outlets were reasonably fair and accurate. And, for the most part they probably were. Today, the printed newspaper is shrinking and the network ratings are falling. Of course, this is largely because of cable news, social media and maybe other factors. This change in major media should not be confused with the relatively stable small or local media such as a county seat daily paper or local radio station. The local media does a good job of covering city council meetings, the high school sports and local obits, but most folks get their national and world news from "big" media. And, here we're getting a very polarizing message. If you watch MSNBC and then Fox News coverage of news event, you can get an entirely different message. The old mainstream news outlets seem to also be growing more opinionated with their editorial policy often seeping into their news stories. A majority of these main- stream organizations are accused by conservatives of having a liberal bias. There is, at least, no doubt that they are leading the way on constantly telling us that we are a divided nation. Of course, we value a free press, but if the owners of news organizations would voluntarily try to offer more fair and balanced reporting we might find the nation less polarized. Although most folks don't always admit it, they tend to believe what they are told. This constant drumbeat about division may be good copy for the reporter, but bad for the country. A newspaper publisher or a network top exec can easily demand better, more fair and less divisive reporting. The Indiana Department of Transportation is recommending that residents along stateand US highways make good use of the warmer temperatures to prepare their mailboxesfor our next winter blastSnow and ice removal is INDOTrsquos number one priority in the winter months INDOTrsquosyellow plow trucks often travel slower than the speed limit INDOT snowfighters arecareful to avoid mailboxes but despite their best efforts the weight of snow thrown fromplows can cause damage to mailboxes with weak supports

Property owners are responsible for installing and maintaining mailboxes on statehighway right of way If a mailbox is placed as far from the edge of the road as the carriercan reach from a vehicle and the mailbox is placed on a sturdy support it should be ableto withstand the force of snow thrown from a plow

Keeping access areas near the mailbox clear of snow can help ensure safer delivery ofmail and reduce the amount of snow coming off the plow

INDOT offers these tips to help reduce the risk of mailbox damage Place a 6- to 8-inch piece of reflective tape on the mailbox to help snowfighters see itat night Remove snow from around your mailbox but avoid throwing the snow back onto theroadway This Missouri DOT video shows how to minimize snow being thrown ontoyour mailbox and driveway httpsyoutube8Bm7mJxJOSU Inspect your mailbox Make sure it is firmly supported in the ground and check fordeteriorated wooden posts and rusted metal posts Also make sure your mailbox issecurely mounted to the post Check the mounts for rust and wear as well If possible avoid plastic mailboxes Some plastic mailboxes have a tendency to shatterin cold weather If your mailbox continues to get knocked down you may want to consider changingthe location of the mailbox Sometimes moving the mailbox a few feet in either directioncan help

INDOT is not able to repair damaged mailboxes Homeowners who have followedthese tips in the past and have still experienced mailbox damage should check localhardware stores for a snow shield or wooden protectors (as shown in the photo) for yourmailbox or install a swinging mailbox support that will swing the mailbox out of harmrsquosway

Now is the time to reinforce your mailbox for our next winter blast

the Pacers were unable to overcome thesharp play of the Boston Celtics who useda dominating second quarter to build anearly lead against the Pacers as Bostonwent on to win 109-102 on Thursday nightat Bankers Life Fieldhouse

On a number of occasions Indiana gotits deficit down to just five points but eachtime the comeback bid was stymied byBostons offense spearheaded by the playof Isaiah Thomas who finished the nightwith 28 points and nine assists

We had to play with a sense ofurgency Pacers head coach NateMcMillan said after the game We weredown But its going to be tough to beat anyteam when you have 19 turnovers and only20 assists There was sloppy playparticularly in the first half

The Pacers comeback came to lifewhen Thaddeus Young hit a 3-pointer tomake it 98-93 with under two minutesremaining in the game but a quick AveryBradley bucket in the paint once againpushed Indiana out of striking distance asthe Pacers fell to 15-16 on the season

Indiana was trailing by 10 late untilCJ Miles scored seven straight for thePacers his last of which also brought thePacers within five

But just as Bradley did when Younghad cut the lead down Thomas scorchedthe Pacers inside moving the comebackout of reach

Isaiah (Thomas) is a strong aggressiveguard Paul George said Coachs gameplan was right on We had the right gameplan in place for this team and we did agood job for the most part just not quitegood enough

In the waning moments of the gameneeding to foul to stop the clock Indianaused a 3-pointer from Jeff Teague and freethrows from Miles to make it a one-possession game but the Pacers were neveron offense while down three needing tosend opposing shooters to the free throwline to stay alive Despite giving the homecrowd a late thrill Boston was able to closeout the game at the stipe

The Celtics (17-12)mdash now winners offour straight mdash jumped out to an early leadto start the game up until the Pacersstarting unit began clicking outscoring the

Celtics 14-6 to force a Boston timeoutWhile the Celtics regained the lead with a3-pointer to make it 22-20 the Pacerswrested it right back with the help of an11-0 run triggered by a powerful one-handed Myles Turner slam in transition

The run helped give the Pacersseparation as Indiana entered the secondquarter with a nine-point edge on thevisitors

That lead it turned out wasnt built tolast as Bostons offense continued to findchances while Indianas offense stayedgrounded with the Celtics reeling off adevastating 17-0 run to open the quarterBy the time the Pacers scored a point 530of game time had elapsed as the score wasflipped on its head

Thanks to their earlier cushion thePacers were able to tighten the game on aThaddeus Young 3-pointer to make it44-40 but Boston closed the half withforce extending its lead to 11 at the break

Out of the halftime locker room thePacers were able to close the gap to 55-49following a Teague layup but Bostonresponded with a 10-0 punch six of whichcame from the hot hand of Bradley

Even after Thad Young quelled thestring of scoring with a pair of buckets tobring Indianas deficit to 12 Bostoncontinued its torrid play extending itsadvantage to 69-53 Thankfully for thePacers a transition opportunity gaveTurner yet another chance for a rim-rocking slam bringing life to the crowd andforcing a Boston timeout with 344 left inthe third quarter

Over the last four minutes of the thirdit was the Jeff Teague show for Indiana asthe point guard scored or assisted on all fiveof Indianas buckets to close the quarterincluding a nifty dime to Al Jefferson whoslammed it home

A Kelly Olynyk three temporarilystalled Indianas comeback bid but theelectric Teague hit a baseline jumper toclose the quarter sending the Pacers intothe fourth trailing 77-67

After a converted and-1 from Georgethe Pacers got a scare when Georges legsslipped out from under him while makinga crossover dribble with 847 in the gameLuckily for the Blue amp Gold Georgestayed in the game knocking down twomore free throws to bring the lead down tosingle digits

Huskies drop two at Floyd Central

By GREG RAPPAPORTCourtesy nbacompacersEven with a furious fourth-quarter rally

the Pacers were unable to overcome thesharp play of the Boston Celtics who useda dominating second quarter to build anearly lead against the Pacers as Bostonwent on to win 109-102 on Thursday nightat Bankers Life Fieldhouse
