SELECTED CUSTOMSAND TRADITIONS FOR ROSH HASHANAH 5779 - 2018

Erub Tabshilin

Our Sages instituted Erub Tabshilin as a means to enable us toprepare food on the Friday of the Holiday for Shabbat. This year ErubTabshilin is not applicable.

Candle Lighting

The blessing for candle lighting for both nights of Rosh HaShanah:

“Barukh Ata Ado-nay Elo-henu Melekh Ha’olam Asher KiddeshanuBemissvotav Vessivanu Lehadlik Ner Shel Yom Tob.“

Kiddush

A regular Rosh HaShanah Kiddush is recited on both nights of RoshHaShanah. Since this year the Holiday does not fall on Shabbat, wedo not make mention of the Shabbat in the Kiddush.

The blessing of “Sheheheyanu” is recited on both nights.

Seder for Rosh HaShanah Both Nights:

After Kiddush and the blessing on the bread, it is our custom to pre-cede the family meal with special foods chosen symbolically andeaten with appropriate blessings and wishes suggested by theirnames. The complete seder can be found in your Mahzor. Recite theprayer and the blessing before eating the following:

Apple dipped in sugar or honey

May it be Thy will Oh L-rd to grant us a year from the first day to the last, goodly as the apple and sweet as honey. The following blessing is recited before eating the fruit (have inmind to cover the dates and pomegranate).

“Barukh Ata Ado-nay Elo-henu Melekh Ha’olam Boreh Peri Ha’ess.”

SELECTED CUSTOMS ANDTRADITIONS FOR YOM KIPPUR– 5779/2018

Candle Lighting:On Yom Kippur we light candles as we do on other Holidays.

Recite the following blessings on the candles:

“Barukh Ata Ado-nay Elo-henu Melekh Ha’olam Asher KiddeshanuBemissvotav Vessivanu Lehadlik Ner Shel (if Friday night: Shabbat ve)Yom Hakippurim.”

The Observance of Yom Kippur

The observance of Yom Kippur is similar to Shabbat with some excep-tions. Starting Tuesday, September 18 at 6:45 PM certain laws takeaffect that become part of the observance of Yom Kippur. One mustabstain from:

1. Eating and drinking2. Showering3. Marital relations4. Wearing leather shoes5. Using perfumes or ointments

Eating and Drinking

- Any amount of food or drink is forbidden.- Children under 9 years of age are not obliged to fast.- Children between 9 and 10 years old should be taught to fast for a few hours.- Children 11 years old should try to fast at least Yom Kippur eve and half the day.- Boys 13 and older and girls 12 and older are obligated to fast.- Pregnant women are obligated to fast unless ordered by a competent physician not to (consult the Rabbi for further inquiry).- Nursing women up to 3 days after childbirth may not fast.- Critically ill people with a competent physician’s orderto eat, may not fast.

OBSERVANCE OF ROSH HASHANAH

Both days of Rosh HaShanah are observed in a similar way toShabbat with the exception of cooking and carrying. One may notwork, write, sell or buy, or ride in a car, but one may cook (transfer firefrom an existing flame or pilot light to another) and one may carryoutside (even without an Erub) keys, talit, baby carriage, etc. One maynot strike a match to start a fire, even for the purpose of cooking. Wesuggest the use of the pilot light or a long lasting candle left burningfrom before the holiday (you may also use the candles that were lit forthe holiday).

Tekiat Shofar:The Shofar is sounded on both days of Rosh HaShanah, unless oneof the days is Shabbat. The Shofar is sounded during the morningservices. Make sure that you arrive on time since the Missva (com-mandment) of listening to the Shofar is of the utmost importance.Although women are not obligated from the Torah to listen to thesound of the Shofar, generations of women have taken it upon them-selves to fulfill this commandment. We therefore request the womento come early enough to be able to participate and fulfill the Missvaof Shofar.

Som Gedalyah:The Fast of Gedalyah begins with the break of dawn at 5:18 AM onWednesday, September 12, 2018 and ends at 7:30 PM.

Prayers on the Ten Days of Penitence: Beginning on Rosh HaShanah we add certain verses and paragraphsto the prayers relating to the 10 days of Penitence. These prayers arefound in every siddur. Do not forget to recite “Shir Hama’alot” before“Yosser”. In the Amida recite “Zokhrenu Le’haim”, “Me Khamokha”,“Hamelekh Hakadosh”, “Ukhtob Le’haim Tobim”, and “UbseferHaim”. These additions remain in effect through Yom Kippur.
