In Sanskrit, lama is guru, and chöpa is offering, so Lama Chöpa translates into English as “offering to the spiritual guide.” In the Gelugpa tradition, there are many guru yoga sadhanas, but Lama Chöpa is the most popular and sacred text. A special practice of Je Tsongkhapa (1357-1419), the founder of the Gelugpa

School, Lama Chöpa was compiled by the first Panchen Lama, Panchen Lozang Chökyi Gyaltsen (1570-1662), who was the teacher of the fifth Dalai Lama (1617-1682). Lama Chöpa became so popular in Tibet and Mongolia that almost every monk of the Gelugpa tradition had it memorized, and recited it on a daily basis, both in the temple as a group practice, and individually. Lama Chöpa is considered to be an Anuttarayoga Tantra or Highest Yoga Tantra practice. As indicated by the opening words, “Arising within the sphere of great bliss, I manifest as a Guru Yidam,” it contains the idea of personal transformation through the practitioner merging his or her mind with the guru as the meditational deity. The essence of the practice is to see the guru as an Enlightened Being, a Buddha, and to receive his or her blessings in return.

heart of the 17th-century art of Tibet. The book was produced in ca. 1687 at the instigation of the famous

scholar and statesman sde srid Sangs rgyas rgya mtsho (1653–1705). Today, the original is kept in the Tibet Autonomous Region Archives (Lhasa). The Handbook includes more than 150 meticulously prepared drawings

of buddhas, bodhisattvas and divinities, 70 script types and 14 stupa models all extrapolated from the rich

heritage of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist art. These are accompanied by an introduction charting the production of the Handbook in the 17th century and the scholarly profile of its principal author Sangs rgyas rgya mtsho. In

the appendix, it reproduces passages from the Vaiḍurya g.Ya' sel that provide valuable additional information about the illustrations.

century is the most important theoretical work on Indian classical music. Its prologue, the Pindotpatti-prakarana («The Section of the Arising of the Human Body»), deals with the Indian science of the human

body, i.e. embryology, anatomy, and the Hathayogic heory of Cakras. The sources of this work are found in

the classical medical texts (Ayurveda) such as Caraka, Susruta and Vagbhata, the Hathayogic texts as well as

in the encyclopaedic texts (Purana). After philologically analyzing the mutual relation and background of these texts, the author demonstrates the reasons why the human body is described in this musicological

work. His investigation reveals the Indian mystic thought of body and sound. This study, although an

Indological one, is an attempt to answer the universal question what music is, i.e. how music is created in the human body, what the effect of music on the human body is, and what music aims at. The second half

of the book consists of a translation of the original text of the Pindotpatti-prakarana, including

literature, feelings of love and gratitude for the mother's nurturance frequently mingle with submerged

feelings of hostility and resentment for the unbreakable obligations thus created, and positive images of self-sacrificing mothers are counterbalanced by horrific depictions of mothers who kill and devour. Institutionally,

the formal definition of the Buddhist renunciant as one who has severed all familial ties seems to co-exist

Gundecha Brothers sono oggi, probabilmente, i migliori interpreti di questa tradizione. Registrato in Italia

nel 2011, il Cd 'Night Prayer' presenta un importante raga della notte: Raga Malkauns; uno dei raga più belli, popolari e antichi della musica classica dell'India del Nord. Evocare lo stato d'animo proprio del

raga, malgrado la sua struttura pentatonica e semplice, richiede una grande bravura. 'Malkauns' è un

raga meditativo, sviluppato per la maggior parte nell'ottava bassa e con un tempo lento che permette ai Gundecha Brothers, nella loro sublime interpretazione, di dare prova della loro grande capacità di

controllare la lenta evoluzione del brano. Un lungo, estatico alap (movimento introduttivo senza un

tempo definito) apre la registrazione. In questo movimento le due voci costruiscono un'architettura maestosa, dipingono un quadro astratto rincorrendosi, chiamandosi con singole note, a tratti ritrovan-dosi in brevi frasi melodiche all'unisono. passing. In the Theravada Buddhist tradition, which prevails in Sri Lanka and South-

east Asia, these records are regarded as the definitive “word of the Buddha.” Preserved in Pali, an ancient

Indian language closely related to the language that the Buddha spoke, this full compilation of texts is known as the Pali Canon. At the heart of the Buddha’s teaching were the suttas (Sanskrit sutras), his

discourses and dialogues. If we want to find out what the Buddha himself actually said, these are the most

ancient sources available to us. The suttas were compiled into collections called “Nikayas,” of which there are four, each organized according to a different principle. The Digha Nikaya consists of longer discourses;

the Majjhima Nikaya of middle-length discourses; the Samyutta Nikaya of thematically connected

discourses; and the Anguttara Nikaya of numerically patterned discourses. The present volume, which continues Wisdom’s famous “Teachings of the Buddha” series, contains a full translation of the Anguttara

Nikaya. The Anguttara arranges the Buddha’s discourses in accordance with a numerical scheme intended

to promote retention and easy comprehension. In an age when writing was still in its infancy, this proved to

be the most effective way to ensure that the disciples could grasp and replicate the structure of a teaching.

Fussman, establishes a link between two bodhisattva-statues in the Pritzker collection and two great

changes which happened in Buddhist devotion during the two first centuries of the C.E., viz. the creation of an anthropomorphic image of the Buddha and the beginnings of the mahāyāna movement, with, as a

consequence, the creation of images of new bodhisattvas. Special attention is given to the attempts at

the creation of images of Avalokiteśvara which preceded the creation and adoption of the later standard imagery. A chronology is needed for any study of change. No wonder if many pages in the first part of the

book are devoted to dating the first Gandhāran images of the Buddha and to a new examination of the

chronology of Mathuran Buddhist art, which concludes by discarding the “omitted hundreds” theory. The

second part of the book is a reprint of two papers by A. M. Quagliotti, where she demonstrated that not every “pensive boddhisattva” should be identified with Avalokiteśvara. In addition, G. Fussman analyses a

stone stele recently discovered in Mes-e Aynak (Afghanistan), whose iconography supports A. M.

Quagliotti’s conclusions.

crucial though controversial questions in buddhist art: the origin of the buddha image-its transformation from aniconism to anthropomorphism-and the iconography of the Buddha Images. The earliest Buddhist Art of Sanchi and Bharhut is aniconic : The Buddha is represented in symbols only. In the later Buddhist

art of Gandhara and Mathura, the Buddha is represented in human form: he is the Principal subject of

Sculptural art. The book seeks to explore the geographical area in which the image of the Buddha first emerged and whether the Buddhist doctrines-Hinayana or Mahayana-had anything to do with this

transformation and whether anthropomorphism of the Buddha Image is of Greek inspiration. The Buddha

image, as developed eventually at Sarnath, became the Model for the Buddha Images in whole of Asia- southeast, central and Eastern. The iconographic features of the Buddha image are superficially an

aberration, being in apparent conflict with the doctrine. The Buddha had cut off his hair at the time of his

renunciation; the rules of the order enjoin that a Monk must be tonsured and must discard and eschew

all riches. However, in his images, the Buddha has hair on his head; later he is also endowed with a crown and jewels which, srictly speaking, are a taboo for a renunciant. After an exhaustive examination of the

Views of various scholars, the book answers these questions and resolves the controversies on the basis

of literary, Numismatic and epigraphic sources. More importantly it makes use of the valuable evidence from the contemporaneous Jaina art : Aniconism of early Jaina art and the iconographic features of Jaina

images. The implications of this Study are also important : Does India owe idolatry to Buddhism? Was this

of foreign inspiration? Was the Buddha image fashioned after the Vedic Brahma and whether the Buddha's usnisa and Buddhist art motifs are rooted in the Vedic tradition?

medieval Spain over seven hundred years ago. Written in lyrical Aramaic, this masterpiece of Kabbalah

exceeds the dimensions of a normal book; it is virtually a body of mystical literature, comprising over twenty discrete sections. The bulk of the Zohar consists of a mystical interpretation of the Torah, from Genesis

through Deuteronomy. This seventh volume of The Zohar: Pritzker Edition consists of commentary on more

than half the book of Leviticus. How does the Zohar deal with a biblical text devoted largely to animal sacrifices, cereal offerings, and priestly ritual? Here these ancient laws and procedures are spiritualized,

transformed into symbols of God's inner life, now that both the Desert Tabernacle and the Temple in

Jerusalem no longer exist. For example, the ascent offering, which was totally consumed on the altar, is known in Hebrew as olah (literally, "that which ascends"). In the Zohar, this symbolizes Shekhinah, last of the

ten sefirot (divine potencies), who ascends to unite with Her beloved, the blessed Holy One. The biblical

narrative describes how two of Aaron's sons, Nadab and Abihu, offered alien fire before YHVH and were

immediately consumed in a divine blaze. Rabbinic tradition suggested various reasons why they were killed: they lacked the proper priestly garments, or had not washed their hands and feet, or were drunk, or were not married. For the Zohar, marriage enables one to imitate the divine union of male and female energies, and to

stimulate that union above. By not marrying, Nadab and Abihu remained incomplete and unfulfilled. According to a related Zoharic passage, their ritual act failed because in their contemplation of the divine

qualities they did not include Shekhinah. Without Her, God is incomplete.

ma non è agevole ricostruire dai numerosi passi che trattano questo tema una concezione rigorosa e coerente. Tuttavia dalle affascinanti e spesso fantasiose osservazioni sulla funzione del canto

nell’ebraismo si possono ricostruire le idee portanti su ciò che la musica ha rappresentato nel corso dei

secoli. Se è vero che esiste un ebraismo più volto verso una concezione razionalistica e un ebraismo più volto verso il misticismo, indubbiamente quest’ultima corrente ha privilegiato la musica e il canto, sino a

identificarli con la preghiera. Lo Zohar, il grande testo medievale della mistica ebraica, ha rappresentato

una fonte inesauribile di osservazioni su questo tema: questa ricerca ha puntato soprattutto a una lettura, spesso tra le pieghe di questo affascinante libro esoterico, delle pagine dedicate alla musica. Ne

emerge una concezione ovviamente molto lontana da ciò che nella cultura occidentale si è inteso per

l’arte dei suoni. Ma l’interesse nasce proprio dal confronto tra due tradizioni culturali molto diverse tra

loro, che in qualche modo hanno entrambe portato il loro contributo allo sviluppo della civiltà musicale in cui viviamo.

moderna, quale l’ermetismo filosofico, né il mito del Trismegisto filosofo, sacerdote e re, primo anello

della catena dei prisci theologi e fondatore di una docta religio che anticipava la teologia e i misteri del Cristianesimo. Mercurius Trismegistus è il nome dato al presunto autore degli scritti ermetici (sec. II-III).

In realtà è una figura storicamente inesistente, nata dall'identificazione, avvenuta in epoca ellenistica,

del dio greco Hermes (dio della parola e come tale messaggero di Zeus) col dio egiziano Thot (dio delle lettere, della misura, dei numeri). A questa mitica figura greco-egiziana, considerata depositaria della

parola e della sapienza divina, furono attribuiti quegli scritti che presero perciò il nome di ermetici.

archivisti, informatici e giuristi che sono prima di tutto pressati dalla necessità di superare le barriere tra le varie

discipline verso la formazione di nuove figure professionali con le giuste competenze. Questo testo nasce con l'obiettivo di fare il punto sull'argomento, raccogliendo le best practice e le metodologie adottate nei migliori archivi digitali e dando ampio risalto agli standard e ai progetti internazionali, nonché alla legislazione in materia.

Il manuale è diviso in tre parti. La prima è quella più dedicata ai temi documentali veri e propri. Si inizia con la

trattazione del documento cartaceo tradizionale e dell'archivistica "classica" per poi proseguire con le problematiche relative alla transizione al digitale e infine approdare alla conservazione digitale a lungo termine.

Nella seconda parte si affronta il problema della sicurezza dell'informazione e in particolare dell'identità digitale,
