THS European Tour April 2014

Three THS students, Keiran Lopes, Cody Bland and Nathan Watt and theirparents, teacher, Bev Babbage and Deputy, Kathy McDowell together with former THS Head Teacher HSIE, Steve Elsley and his daughter combined with South Grafton High School to tour European historic sites for 15 days over the last school holidays!

Our group of 30 flew Emirates Airlines to Rome. With a busy schedule of historical sites including the spectacular Coliseum and lots of walking, soaking in the sights and sounds. While we were there the Vatican was being prepared for Easter and the pending sainthood ceremony. We survived a hail storm and enjoyed the pizza (which in Italy is a whole different experience to Toormina pizza!).

Next stop was Pompeii, really fascinating and we also got to meet a few locals, playing soccer with them near our hotel. We climbed Mt Vesuvius, which was freezing but worth it. We then survived a remarkable (for all the wrong reasons)bus trip then onto historic Herculaneum, which was amazing, with frescoes still colourful even after 1900 years!

Paris next, we were got very excited seeing the Eiffel Tower as we flew in! We had a cruise down the River Seine and 2 days of pastries, baguettes and all things French!

In Belgium we went to Ypres, the scene of a major World War 1 battle. THS students were able to lay a wreath at the Menin Gate. We had local, academic guides to show us around these historic sites and to tell us individual and very poignant stories about the war. We now have a very real knowledge of the horrors of trench warfare and the despair and bravery of our Diggers.ANZAC Day was spent in Villers Bretonneox, France, at an emotive and moving dawn service. There were thousands of people from all over the world attending and this service was broadcast live to Australia. Mrs McDowell got a ‘selfie’ with Australia’s Foreign Minister, Julie Bishop.

We travelled by bus to the airport via Amiens, then the long haul home via Dubai.

This was a great excursion, we had unbelievable experiences and made friends everywhere we went (we met school groups from Canada, America and Inverell). If anyone gets the chance to make this trip, do it!

All Year 10 students at Toormina High School have participated in the LOVE BITES program about safe and respectful relationships.

The program is delivered by staff from Toormina High School, the Mid North Coast Health Services, the Department of Community Services and local Police.

In 2006 THS School Captains Ruby-Mae Burgess and Mitchell Thorpe applied to have this program initiated at THS and it has been running very successfully ever since thanks to a very committed staff.Lovebites now runs in many schools in NSW and interstate.

LOVEBITES 2014

‘I learnt who to go to to get helpand about the consequences’.

‘I will always remember this’.

‘ I learnt that domestic violence can affect anyone.’

‘Thank you for this program it was very effective.’

‘I learnt how to speak up.’

‘This is education about something we need to learn about.’

‘I learnt that domestic violence is not just physical but many different things.’

‘What I liked about Lovebites is that it makes my community be a bit more safe.’

‘Lovebites showed me real life situations which made me understand’.

These are anonymous quotes from some of our students who completed the Lovebites survey this year.....

PRINCIPAL’S COLUMNDear Parents,I thank all of you who attended our parent-teacher evening on Tuesday. It is invalu-able for your children that you and their teachers are able to discuss all matters relat-ing to their progress in a warm and collaborative environment. The bus companies which use our bay have made strong representation to council regarding parents driving through the bus bay during designated bus times. We are enclosing a list of penalty rates in this newsletter. The rangers have indicated that they will be out again very soon. For the safety of all our students, please obey the signs.Aaron Werts who is an ex-student of our school and now at the University of New England is bringing an important program to our school. It is called the Minimbah Project and it means that you can acquire a copy of your birth certificate without any cost to you. On Friday, 20th June, Aaron and his team from Enactus will be in our Drama Room near the car park to scan your documents and make a group application for all the information to be processed. The cost is covered by the Federal Depart-ment of Education from a grant. The day will run from 9.00am to 3.00pm and it is for community members and students to bring their paperwork of identification to apply for a birth certificate. A Justice of the Peace will be available to verify any documents people may bring. Aboriginal families are particularly encouraged to take up this opportunity to acquire a birth certificate. We are so proud that Aaron has become involved with such a humanitarian project and we are thrilled that he has chosen our school to be part of this contribution to our community.Best wishes,E. Donnan

O, A & B – What do you think about Japanese whaling?

Mrs D – I understand that it is an economic thing to a lot of those towns affected by the Fukashima meltdown after the tsunami. They were dependent on whaling and I know that it is an economic thing for them. What I think is more important is that Australia took them to the International Court to stop whaling in the Southern Ocean and now I think it is up to the rest of the world to pay attention to their nearby oceans so that whaling doesn’t start to occur there. I don’t listen much about the excuses that people make for why they do things, I am more interested in a job being well done or not well done. I think this is a very good first step.O, A & B – What do you think about Flight 370 crashing?

Mrs D – I can’t imagine why they can’t find it, I think we all thought that tracking systems would be more advanced in this day and age, and I think that is a big surprise. I wouldn’t speculate about if it was an accident or deliberate. The fact they are having such trouble finding it is a big surprise to me. I think now all around the world they are going to do a lot more research to improve the tracking of planes.O, A & B – What is the best part about being a principal?

Mrs D – The best part is watching people grow and enjoy being at school and then seeing them leave as a better person, and as complete as they need to be. They have their academic education behind them. They have done their leadership and their work placements, their sport and all the things that school can offer them. They are ready to face the world at the end of year 12, it sounds corny but it’s a privilege to be part of young people and their environment. That is why I am cranky with the students waiting outside my office now for misbehaving at assembly. If we can’t teach them restraint, they are going to have trouble getting a job and keeping it. We are trying to give them practices that will help them through their whole life.O, A & B – It must feel good when you see a THS students achieve great things with their life and know you have contributed to that?

Mrs D – It is a privilege, I don’t actually do the teaching, that is your teachers but it is my responsibility to make sure everything is in place for the teachers.O, A & B – How do you think the ESL kids are doing at our school and do you think we will get more next year?

Mrs D – I don’t know if we are getting more, we have asked to keep at this level so we can learn how to address their needs. I want the students to feel comfortable in our school and safe. You probably know some come from vey unsafe backgrounds, some have had trauma in their lives, some have been abused and some haven’t had homes. So for some even being with so many of us is a frightening big deal. O, A & B – It is good they are now playing soccer with us.

Mrs D – Yes, but watch the girls I think it is harder for them, I would like them to feel free and comfortable to mix with everyone.O, A & B – When their English gets better it will be easier to interact with others.

Mrs D – When some of these students came here really it was the first time they had ever been to a school and seen young people enmasse and they were really confronted by it so I think they have come a long way and I think our teachers are doing a great job!O, A & B – Some of them have even had their families taken away.

Mrs D – Yes or even killed, imagine what that would do to you.O, A & B – On another subject around our school, are the rest of the toilets going to be renovated?

Mrs D – We are sandblasting the toilets near maths so they can be painted properly. When we get funding we would like to fix up the toilets in the hall and the library.O, A & B – What is the worst part of being a principal?

Mrs D – Honestly, I could give you an easy answer but I won’t. The hardest part for me is when there is a clash of values between the school and the family. For example, if, at school we say you have to solve your own problems – you have to negotiate, you don’t turn around and be unkind or aggressive, you solve things and get teachers help if you need to. Most families would agree with all of that and that is exactly how they want their children brought up. Work hard and get on with it.If you have a clash of values with the family, where the family have said (for whatever reason) something like ‘you have to be a man, if someone hits a girl you should hit them’, be aggressive yourself – that is a clash of values and that is the hardest for the child.

YEAR 12 STUDY DAY

O, A & B – It is like 2 people telling you what to do. Your Mum and Dad tell you so you think it is the right thing to do because they have been telling you what to do your whole life.

Mrs D – You might even live in a home where it is required that you behave in a similarly aggressive way. I would assume all your parents would not like it if you were aggressive.O, A & B – How can we get THS students to make our school a better place for everyone?

Mrs D – I think the more kids that participate in the SRC, the more leadership things kids do like ‘Shave for a Cure’. I thought our last social was great! The kids had input into the music the DJ’s played and everyone did the right thing. I think the more positive things we do like that we win the kids hearts and the more kids feel they own and belong to the school. And that is how you make kids feel that it’s a better school.O, A & B Every time kids tell their friends how good it was and more kids come.

Mrs D – Exactly, you build the spirit amongst yourselves. You heard when we talked about Jake Kedzlie today at assembly, you heard the hush around all the kids that’s what I really like.O, A & B – Respect

Mrs D – Exactly and they have to respect themselves. It’s a matter of growing up.O, A & B – Thanks for your time Mrs Donnan

Mrs D – Thank you, it has been a pleasure.

The Year 10 Art classes have produced some of the best examples of drawing and painting the school has ever seen. The two classes had to produce a large work of a famous Australian for the Toormina High Archibald Prize 2014, in any style they liked. For many this was the first time they had to produce a work this size however the standard is equal to the real Archibald prize entries, which will be seen in the media in July this year, so well done!
