On 16th April 2014 Blake Greenway and I attended the NSW Premier and Governor’s Welcome Reception for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. We were two of sixty students selected from throughout NSW to attend the event held at the Sydney Opera House.Upon arrival at the Opera House we went through several stages of security before being briefed on the protocol inside the venue. The protocol revolved around how we were to greet the Royal Couple: firstly, we had to wait for either Prince William or Catherine to initiate conversation with us. Then, we must first address them as Your Royal Highness and thereafter as either Sir or Madam. Also, upon meeting them we were instructed to curtsey or make a small bow of the head.

The Reception was held in the Concert Hall Northern Foyer of the Opera House – which had floor to ceiling windows stretching right across the back of the room overlooking the beautiful Sydney Harbour. Also in attendance at the Reception were many well-known Australian’s alongside inspirational youth and volunteer workers and students. Some in attendance include: rugby league footballers Paul Gallen, Anthony Minichiello, John Sutton and Michael Ennis, NSW Origin Coach Laurie Daley, former Australian cricketer Glenn McGrath, dual soccer and cricket international Ellyse Perry, swimmers Matt and Andrew Abood, Winter Olympian Torah Bright, radio personalities Kyle and Jackie O, burns victim Turia Pitt, as well as many Police and Australian Defence Force representatives.

Prince William made an address in which he highlighted his love for Australia and how he and Kate wish to pass that onto Prince George. Both William and Kate were incredibly friendly and spoke to as many people as they could, with Blake lucky enough to shake Prince William’s hand while both of us were in close proximity to both William and Kate.

While in Sydney, we had the exciting experience of being interviewed by Sam and Kochie on Sunrise. The whole team at Channel 7 were very friendly, even asking us back for a second interview, this time with Ann Sanders, during their live coverage of the Royal Tour. On top of this, we also did two interviews with Coffs Coast local ABC Radio!

The whole experience of being in attendance at the Reception, meeting other students and everyday people as well as well-known Australians (the highlight was meeting Glenn McGrath), our time at Channel 7 and with ABC Radio and being upgraded to Harbour views at our hotel, made it an unforgettable journey for us. We feel very honoured to have been given such a wonderful opportunity which we will both remember for the rest of our lives.

CONGRATULATIONS!

TERM 2 STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAYKevin Thompson, Program Advisor for New Arrivals and Jodie Braiding, New Arrivals Program Rural Regional officer, delivered an insightful presentation to THS staff on our Staff Development Day.Staff developed an understanding into the experiences of our migrant students, the consequences for their learning and the strategies to best support their education. We also learnt about E.A.L.D. - English as an Additional Language or Dialect as English is often a fourth or fifth language! To further enhance our understanding THS asked Coffs Harbour business woman Kuei Manyoun, (featured below) to come and talk to our students and staff.This valuable training was followed by faculty planning time to prepare for the new Australian Curriculum.

This year eight students undertook The General Induction for Construction - White Card course at Toormina High. The course is delivered annually by Maurice Tait and is a requirement for any person wishing to enter a construction site in any State of Australia.

INSPIRATIONAL SPEAKERYear 10 were captivated on Monday by our guest speaker Kuei Manyoun. This talk tied in with the Year 10 English unit ‘Respecting Differences’.

Kuei shared her story from living in war torn Southern Sudan to arriving in Australia, but, her main theme was the importance of education for all.

Her committment to Australia and to helping migrants was inspiring and our Year 10 students listened intently, showing the utmost respect to our guest with many coming up to shake Kuei’s hand and thank her at the end.

Kuei is the first in a series of presentations we hope to hold each term to further enrich our Year 10 student’s education.

WHITE CARD COURSE

Congratulations to Judith Peen and Janelle Bailey on their selection as members on the School Administrative and Support Staff Reference Group (SRG). The SRG meets regularly with the executive director regarding the professional learning needs of school and administrative and support staff and to plan professional learning programs to meet these needs. The SRG is the key stakeholder advisory group on school administrative and support staff professional learning. Judith is the Aboriginal education officer representative and Janelle is the School adminis-trative officer – high school. SHAVE FOR A CURE & FUNKY HAIR DAY

On Friday the 2nd and Monday the 6th of May Brenton Knight, Amanda, Clifford, Riley Gray, Brain Bolt and Penny Grace all raised funds for the annual ‘Shave for a Cure’.All five bravely shaved their heads and in total raised over $3000.Well done to all those who participated and thank you for all the donations received.Penny and Amanda also donated over 50cm of hair to the ‘Locks of Love’ foundation which creates wigs for children.

YEAR 11 PHYSICS, ELEC TRONICS & ENGINEERING STUDIES SYDNEY ExCURSIONLast term Mr Harrington and Mr Driscoll took Year 11 students to Sydney. We stayed at the YHA at the Rocks and after we arrived we took a walk around the Opera House. The next day we visited the GPC Electronics Factory at Penrith and then the nuclear reactor, ANSTO, at Lucas Heights. We saw a particle accelerator and played with electronic devices that explained the principles behind the accelerator. Dinner was at Darling Harbour.The next day we visited the Mechatronics Department at Sydney Uni. We programmed a robotic arm to stack blocks into a tower. Nathan White and Connor Cheer’s team won! We also played with a remote control car and learnt about the forces involved in car accidents and watched a cool presentation on artificial intelligence.We went to the Mechanical Department where they actually make a car every year to enter a competition against other universities. Then we pretended to be real uni students hanging around the cafeteria! Was a great excursion!

Kaitlin was recognised broadly for her participation in various initiatives across the school and community, including the 10% on Top Club, Deadly Days, NAIDOC activities and sporting achievements, and more specifically for her involvement in AIME (Austral-ian Indigenous Mentoring Experience) and their initiative “The Other Election”. As part of this project Aboriginal students from across Australia were invited to write and record a speech that they would deliver if they were elected Prime Minister. From the 600 entries Kaitlin placed fourth and had an opportunity to record her speech for airing on the AIME homepage.

KAITLIN REEVES WINS AWARD

Last term one of our Year 11 students, Kaitlin Reeves, was the recipient of a state-wide Nanga Mai Award for Outstanding Achievement in Public Speaking. Nanga Mai awards are given annually to celebrate and recognise innovation, excellence and achievement in Aboriginal education in NSW schools.

Nanga Mai is a Eora (Sydney) word meaning ‘dream’ and the awards themselves are presented to high-achieving Aboriginal students and staff. Whilst Toormina High School regularly has students nominated for the awards, Kaitlin is our first successful recipient.

The girls Under 15's Bill Turner Trophy team played Orara High School at Toormina Oval in a nail biting game. Orara scored first with Toormina getting one back soon after and so the game went. The final score was 3-2 to Orara.I would like to congratulate both teams on their excellent sportsmanship and the Toormina team for their great effort and playing a whole 60 minute game with no substitutes.

Round 2 of the CHS tennis draw this year was played on 10/04/14 at Sawtell Tennis Courts. THS boys tennis team defeated Grafton HS 8 sets to 0. Congratulations to the team members Hudson Kacsics, Ben Field, Luke Field & James Benecke for their advancement to round 3.THS girls tennis team posted a reverse result to the boys at the hand of a strong Grafton HS girls team. Madilyn Brady, Charis Williams, Melissa Lieschke & Georgina Field as well as the boys represented the school exceptionally well.

Last term a team of talented THS swimmers made it the Combined High Schools State Championships.The swimmers were Travis Lee, Catarina Gordon, Sarah Bailey, Kate Bowles and Chloe Rann.The 14’s girl relay team came 16th.Catarina 18th in the Individual Medley.Travis 19th in 100m breaststroke.Kate 28th in 100m butterfly, 22nd in100m backstroke and 20th in 100m freestyle.

Year 9December 2014, the University of Newcastle’s Girls Choice Summer School and LIVE IT! (for boys) programs are five day residential experiences for NSW Year 9 students.The program aims to expose students to a range of career and study options that exist for HSC graduates with Math and Science subjects. It also inspires students to build upon their potential to succeed in Years 10, 11 and 12.
