Industrial Visit

14th June 2018

ISTE Student Chapter, in association with the

department of Mechanical Engineering, arranged an

industrial visit to TVS Motors, Bengaluru on 14/06/2018

for non-teaching staff of Department of Mechanical

Engineering. The group visited manufacturing and

assembly section. 27 staff members attended the visit.

The event was coordinated by faculty Dr. Santosh

Doreswamy and Dr. Suhas B. G., supported by Dr.

Bheemsha Arya, Head of Mechanical Engineering

Department and Dr. Rudra Naik, Chairman, ISTE-BMSCE

Staff Development Programme

18 – 22 June 2018

Department of Mechanical Engineering, BMSCE in

association with Department of Mechanical Engineering,

M. J. P. Rohilkhand University, Bareilly, UP, organized

One week Technical Staff Development Programme on

“Machine Tools Maintenance” from 18th to 22nd June

2018.

This programme was aimed at train the participants in

understanding the conventional and non-conventional

machine tool maintenance, programming, etc. The staffs

were trained with hands-on sessions on Routine,

Preventive, Breakdown and Corrective maintenance.

Bareilly U.P under twining.

Two Weeks FDP Programme

16th – 27th July 2018

Two weeks Faculty Development Programme on “Advanced

Manufacturing”. This program was inaugurated 16-7-2018

by Mr Jaganath, Mysore. The function was presided by Dr.B

V Ravishankar, Vice Principal, HOD, Dept. of Mechanical

Engineering, and Dr.S.Srinivas & Dr.Tataram K Chavan

Program Chief Coordinators. This session started with an

inauguration and a keynote address on Advanced

Manufacturing. The various topics covered are

Micromachining, SEM, Electro-pulse cutting, Mechatronics,

FEM APPLICATIONS in Manufacturing, 3D printing,

Industrial Hydraulics, Manufacturing simulation, Friction

stir welding, Nano machining, Characterization of Nano

Materials – TEM & XRD, Nano Materials, Abrasive Water

jet Cutting, EDM, Tribology, Advance Welding for Aero

Engines and Advanced Manufacturing for Gas turbine

application followed by lab sessions in the afternoons. Two

week FDP was concluded with the valedictory function held

on 27-7-2018. The chief guest was Dr. V Dillibabu from

DRDO. The function was presided by Dr. K. Mallikharjuna

Babu Principal, Guest of honour, Dr.B V Ravishankar, Vice

Principal, Dr.L.Ravikumar, Dr.Bheemsha Arya, HOD, Dept.

of Mechanical Engineering, Dr.S.Srinivas & Dr.Tataram K

Chavan Program Chief Coordinators. Participants shared

their feedback about the program. The certificates to all the

participants were distributed. Four best participants were

felicitated. The speakers were from IISc, GTRE, FESTO

and Kennametal. An industrial visit was arranged to VTU

Research center, Muddenahally. About 47 participants

attended the program.

Industrial Visit

25th July 2018The Department of Mechanical Engineering, arranged

industrial visit to Volvo truck division, Tavarekere, near

Hoskote on 25/07/2018 for 34 Non-teaching staff of

Mechanical Engineering from BMSCE, Bengaluru. The

group was led by Dr. Sathisha H.M, Asst Prof, Mech Engg,

along with Dr. Suhas BG, Asst Prof, Mech Engg. The group

visited assembly section and the process was briefed by

Miss. Shilpa, HR department, Volvo Trucks division.

Volvo was established in 1915 as a subsidiary of SKF, a ball

bearing manufacturer; however both the Volvo Group and

Volvo Cars regard the rollout of the company's first car

series, the Volvo OV 4, on 14 April 1927, as their

beginning. The Volvo Group is a Swedish multinational

manufacturing company headquartered in Gothenburg.

While its core activity is the production, distribution and

sale of trucks, buses and construction equipment, Volvo also

supplies marine and industrial drive systems and financial

services. In 2016, it was the world’s second largest

manufacturer of heavy-duty trucks.

Distinguished Professor and Chief Scientific Officer,

Altair India was organized on 8th August at 10 am. Prof

Rao delivered a lecture on the topic “21st Century

Simulation Based Engineering Science Approach”.

Guest Lecture by Dr. V. Aswatha Ramaiah, Director,

Unique Consultants, Bengaluru, was organized on 9th

One-day Workshop

11th August 2018

One-day workshop on ‘Curriculum Revision, Outcomes &

Attainment’ was conducted by the Department of

Mechanical Engineering, BMSCE, on 11th August 2018 for

faculty of BMSCE. The workshop was sponsored by

TEQIP-III.

Prof. R. Suresh Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department

of Mechanical Engineering, BMSCE, was the Resource

person for the workshop. The workshop was attended

by about 50 faculty of the Department.

TEQIP-III Twinning Programme:

Workshop Conducted

Four faculty from the Department of Mechanical

Engineering, viz., Dr. J. Sharana Basavaraja, Associate

Professor, Dr. Shivashankar R. Srivatsa, Assistant

Professor, Prof. Shashiraj, Assistant Professor, and Dr.

Santhosh D., Assistant Professor, delivered lectures and

training sessions as Resource persons for the ‘One-week

Workshop on CAD Modeling, MATLAB and ANSYS’.

The workshop was intended to provide knowledge about

fundamentals and applications Geometric modeling,

Finite Element Modeling & Analysis, and Numerical

Computations and simulation as applied to Structures in

Engineering. The program had lecture sessions,

software training sessions and hands-on practice

sessions addressing Modeling, Simulation and Numerical

Computations using SolidWorks, MATLAB and ANSYS. A

total of 77 students were trained in two groups during

the workshop.

Induction Program for I year Students

For the students who were admitted to First Year B. E.

for the Academic year 2018-19, an Induction Programme

was conducted by Department of Mechanical

Engineering from 27th to 30th August 2018. The

programme involved a series of academic activities

conducted by eminent people from Industry. Research

and Academia, and presentations by various Professional

bodies.

The Programme started with welcome address to

fresher’s and presentation about Department activities

by Dr. Bheemsha Arya, Professor & Head, Department of

Mechanical Engineering.

It was followed by a Guest Lecture by Dr. Aswatha

Ramaiah, Director, Unique Consultants, Bengaluru, on

the topic ‘Formula for Success’, and a talk by

Ms. Meghana Hanumesh, Faculty, Unique Consultants on

the topic ‘Positive Attitude and Self-Motivation’.

Afternoon sessions had presentations on activities of the

Department student forum - Mechanical Engineering

Association (MEA), and presentation and visits to Propel

Lab.

PHASE SHIFT 2018

15th & 16th September 2018

Department of Mechanical Engineering organized four

technical events and a Guest Lecture as part of Phase

Shift – 2018, the technical fest of BMSCE. The events

were conducted in collaboration with Industrial partners

viz. EduCAD.

Event : SITUATION

Participants were given a real time situation on first day.

They had to present the solution to it on second day of

event. The teams were judged based on their unique

solutions to problem, based on their presentation skills

and style of expressing things.

Event : EnCASE IT 2.0

Participants were given a set of part drawings of a

robotic arm. The task involved creation of geometric 3D

model and developing the assembly simulating the

motion of the arm. The teams were judged based on time

taken to complete the task and ability to show the

mechanism motion simulation. A total of 11 teams

participated in the event.

Event: ROBO WARS

Robots battle among themselves for the survival within

the arena. Each team had to compete against every other

team. Participants had to get their own robots and

materials. Robots unable to move even after 30 seconds

after damage loses are eliminated. Maximum dimensions

of the robot was 2ft x 1ft x 1ft. Maximum weight was 8

kgs. No fire or explosives were allowed to be used as

defence in the competition.

Total number of participating teams: 7

Format of the competition:

Phase 1: Round-robin phase - each team fought with the

rest of the teams. The team that gets pushed out of the

arena loses the fight. Also, the vehicle that becomes

inactive for more than 30 seconds loses the fight. Bout

time is 5 minutes. Winning team gets 1 point. Losing

team get none. If there is a tie, both teams get 0.5 points

each.

Phase 2: Final phase - top two teams from phase 1 clash

against each other. The above rules hold good for this

phase too. Winning team is the final winner of the

competition.

Event : SINGULARITY

The event singularity was a two-day event. It started at

12 pm the first day with about 7 teams (14 students)

participating in round 1. They had to solve a set of

subjective and objective questions regarding propulsion,

aerodynamics, and space-science.

4 teams progressed to the next round which happened

the following day at 11 am. In this, they had to

theoretically construct a suitable satellite and present

the reasons they did so. The rubrics are prepared to

evaluate the participants -Relevance of Contribution to

topic under discussion.

Guest Lecture

15th September 2018

A Guest Lecture on the topic "Talk on Interplanetary

Missions” was arranged by Mr. Naravi Srinivasa Hegde,

Mission Director, Chandrayaan-1, ISRO, Bengaluru, in the

department from 1.00 P.M. to 4.00 P.M. in MESH.

The speaker highlighted the importance of Chandrayaan-

1 mission. The way the mission was carried out and the

achievements from the mission. It gave a glimpse of

opportunities ahead for the students and the necessary

skills to be acquired.

MEA Orientation Programme

6th October 2018

Department of Mechanical Engineering, BMSCE in coordination

with Mechanical Engineering Association (MEA) conducted an

orientation program to the engineering students of 3rd

semester for the academic year 2018-19. The program was

held on 6th October 2017 at 11 a.m. in B. M. S. Auditorium,

BMSCE.

Mr. Pramod Nataraj, Organizing secretary, DISHA Bharat,

Bengaluru, was the Chief Guest of the function. Dr. Bheemsha

Arya, Professor and Head, Department of Mechanical

Engineering, and Dr. T. K. Chavan, Chief faculty Coordinator-

Mechanical Engineering Association, Mr. Diwakar – MEA

student coordinator representative were present on the dais.

Mr. Pramod Nataraj, the Chief Guest, delivered a talk to

motivate the budding engineers. In the talk, he explained the

important qualities of a good student. The talk also included

the glimpse on path of success.

More than 200 students and Faculties of Mechanical

Engineering and other departments attended the event.

Guest Lecture

6th October 2018

A Guest lecture by Sri. Darshan S. N., Design Engineer,

Quest-Global, Bangalore, was organised on 06.10.2018

under TEQIP-III on the topic "Geometric Dimensioning &

Tolerancing". The lecture was intended to give

comprehensive introduction on how to apply, read &

understand technical drawings, and employ Geometric

Dimensioning & Tolerancing.

The lecture covered the topics of terminologies,

Standards of GD&T. Concepts of Datums, Symbols,

Geometric tolerance zones, modifiers as applied during

inspection were discussed. Functional aspects of GD&T

using standard drawings as applied to various stages of

product development such as design, manufacturing, and

inspection were discussed in detail.

The participants also got opportunity to interact with the

expert to gain knowledge on industry perspective of use

of GD&T in product lifecycle management.

About 110 students of 5th semester B. E. and about 10

faculty of Department of Mechanical Engineering

attended the lecture. The event was coordinated by

Dr. Vardhaman S. Mudakappanavar & Dr. Shivashankar

R. Srivatsa, faculty from Mechanical Engineering

Department and supported by TEQIP-III.

Guest Lecture

12th October 2018

A Guest lecture by Dr. M. K. Laha, Associate Professor,

Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology,

Kharagpur, was organised on 12.10.2018 under TEQIP-

III in Mechanical Engineering Seminar Hall on the topic

"An historical perspective of the development of

Aircraft". The event was organized by the Mechanical

Engineering Association (MEA), Department of

Mechanical Engineering, BMSCE under the support of

TEQIP-III.

Dr. M. K. Laha has operated with defense industries for

the development of indigenous aircrafts. His areas of

expertise are Dynamics, Flight mechanics, Computational

Fluid Dynamics and Aerodynamics. In the talk, which

lasted for about one hour, Dr. Laha gave an overall

insight of the development of aircrafts over the past

several decades. He covered the advances starting from

the discovery of balloons and the work of Wright

brothers. He also gave an insight into the basics of

mechanics involved in the flight technology and few

specific terminologies related to the field. He showed

interesting photographs and video clips of different

aircrafts and their specific technological features. He also

covered the introductory part of engines, performance

and the related developments.

Training Conducted for Faculties

3rd -10th October 2018

Training on the 3D Scanner in Mechanical

Measurements & Metrology Lab

A training was conducted for commissioning of the state

of the art non-contact based 3D-Scanner which will serve

the UG and PG students of the upcoming batches for

Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and management

students.

The training was conducted in the month of September

and October in two slots for the faculty handling

Measurements and Metrology laboratory in the

respective departments. The training included

introduction to the 3D Systems Control-X software which

is used globally for measurement confirmations and

hardware training of the Poland based 3D Scanner. This

equipment was bought under the TEQIP-III funding.

The training was successful with fourteen faculties and

one non-teaching staff nominated by the heads of the

department for the training.

29th – 31st October 2018

A three days training on “Hydraulics and Pneumatics”, as

a train the trainer’s programme was conducted by

Rexroth India Ltd from October 29th to 31st, 2018 at

Mechatronics Lab, Machine Shop, Dept of Mechanical

Engineering, BMSCE. Mr. Santhosh, Mrs. Chitranga Bhatt

and Mr.Milind had provided the training on Hydraulics,

Pneumatics, Electro-hydraulics & pneumatics and PLCs.

A total of 12 participants including teaching faculties

have attended it. Hands-on training on various hydraulic

and pneumatic circuits was given. PLC circuits and logics

& its interface with hardware was the important part of

this training programme.

2nd February 2019

A Seminar on ‘Opportunities for Higher Education and

Research in Germany’ was delivered German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) on 2nd February 2019 at 10:45

am in Department of Mechanical Engineering. The

students received guidance regarding opportunities for

higher studies at German Universities.

Visit of Foreign delegates to the Dept.

4th February 2019

Prof. Abul K. M. Azad, PhD, Acting Associate Dean,

Northern Illinois University, USA, visited the Department

of Mechanical Engineering on the 4th Feb, 2019. During

his visit, he visited all the facilities of the department and

interacted with the HOD, Dr. Bheemsha Arya, lab staff

and students of the department. He expressed his

happiness to understand all the facilities of the

department and its people.

In the 4-hour visit, Prof. Azad also interacted with the

many Professors of the department, R&D Coordinator of

the Institute and exchanged ideas for collaboration. As

an outcome of the discussion, a possibility of MoU

between the two institutions was discussed for mutual

benefit of the students and faculty.

Industrial Visit

15th February 2019

An industrial visit to M/s Ace Designers Ltd., Peenya,

Bengaluru, was arranged on 15th Feb 2019 for the

students of 4th semester. The students had opportunity

to visit facilities such as spindle room, shop floors, tool

room, testing room, and Warehouse. The students got an

insight into hard-core manufacturing related machines

and processes. At the end of the industrial visit, all the

students were very satisfied and happy for having got an

exposure to various new and practical aspects of a

manufacturing plant.

21st February 2019

An Industrial visit to National Aerospace Laboratories,

Old Airport Road, Bengaluru was arranged on 21st

February 2019 students of IV Semester C-Section. The

group of students and faculty visited Advanced

Composites division, Structural testing, and Wind tunnel

divisions. The students got opportunity to understand

the manufacturing process and testing involved in

various aerospace components.

Industrial visit

1st March 2019

Industrial visit to National Aerospace Laboratories

was arranged on 1st March 2019 for IV- A Section

students.

The students visited Knowledge Transfer and

Management Division (KTMD), Advanced

Composite Division (ACD) and Centre for Societal

Missions and Special Technologies (CSMST).

The facilities visited included composite aircraft

parts, Autoclave and processing of composite

materials in clean room, Air craft test stations ,

Wind turbines and solar power panels as part of

Hydrid energy systems, testing of aircraft in wind

tunnel, Acoustic test facility and NAL-HANSA,

NAL/HAL SARAS, NAL-NM5 aircraft hangars.

The event was coordinated by Prof. Shashiraj &

Prof. Tripti Pachori. A total of about 60 students

accompanied by faculty members attended the

visit.

A Guest Lecture on“Experiences in Western

World” by Dr. Sureshwara Bengaluru was

organised on 6th March 2019 at 12.00 p.m. in

Mechanical Engineering Seminar Hall. The event

was organized by the Mechanical Engineering

Association (MEA), Department of Mechanical

Engineering, BMSCE.

Dr. B. Sureshwara addressed audience about his

experiences in western world. He shared his

experiences of working in underwriters laboratory

and other organizations.

A Guest Lecture on "Renewable Energy

Technologies for Sustainable Development with

case studies & Projects implemented by NIE-

CREST” by Dr. Shamsundar Subbarao was

organised on 26th March 2019 in Mechanical

Engineering Seminar Hall.

The event was organized by the Mechanical


Mechanical Engineering, BMSCE.

In the talk, which lasted for about one hour, Dr.

Shamsundar gave an overall insight of the

development of Renewable Energy and

sustainable technologies over the past several

decades. He also covered the need or importance

of Sustainable technologies. He explained the

basic engineering involved and the possible areas

of exploration related to the field. He showed

interesting photographs and video clips of

different case studies and projects and their

specific technological features.

The talk was attended by about 120 students of

UG 2nd and 3rd year Mechanical engineering along

with the faculties of Mechanical Engineering.

Association (MEA) Day was celebrated on 29th

March 2019 at 1:30 pm in BMSCE Auditorium-2.

The event was organized by the Mechanical

As a part of MEA day, a week before DYNAMECH

2019, MEA coordinators conducted many

activities / competitions for staff and students of

the department. The staff activities included: Nage

Kannada, Padabandha (Cross word puzzle),

Guruthisi Hesarisi, etc. All teaching and non-

teaching staff actively participated in these events.

Techno cultural events held for students included

Gully cricket, CRUISE, BRAINSTORM, AEROSPACE

WORKSHOP, SLOW BIKE RACE, PUBG, etc. Prizes

for all the competitions were distributed during

the function. More than 300 students from both

UG and PG programs and staff of Mechanical

Engineering department attended the program.

On stage events such as Songs, Dance,

Yakshagana, Bharathanatyam performance, etc.

were eye-catching and well appreciated by the

audience.

A Guest Lecture by Dr. J. S. Rao, President, The Vibration

Institute of India & AICTE-INAE Distinguished Visiting

professor, was organised on 8th April 2019 on the topic

“Kinetics of Machinery” at 11.15 a.m. in Mechanical

Engineering Seminar Hall. During this occasion, a Book on “ Kinetics of Machinery through Hyperworks” authored by

Prof. Rao was released by Principal Dr. B. V. Ravishankar.

The event was organized by the Mechanical Engineering

Dassault Systèm awarded Certificate to Prof. Shashiraj,

Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering

as an author for developing online learning material for

Dassault Systèmes Peer Learning Experience Program

(PLEXP).

Dassault Systèmes launched PLEXP in Europe and USA in the

year 2016-17. About 100 professors from 14 universities

have enrolled in this program and are developing of various

courses. With the launch of this program in India, expert

professors from various institutions in India got

opportunities to be part of Global team of Professors and

work collaboratively on this program. The course developed

by Prof. Shashiraj, “Finite Element Analysis of Composite Material Parts using 3D Experience” reviewed by Global Committee of experts is accepted with appreciation and

published on PLEXP Platform of Dassault Systèmes. Dassault

Systemes felicitated professors who contributed for

development of courses as part of PLEXP in a function on

Thursday, 21st February 2019 at Dassault Systemes campus

in Pune.

Competition.

In the National Level Paper presentation competition held in

NIE Mysore, on 11th April 2019, two students of

Manufacturing Science and Engineering (P.G. Studies) of

BMS College of Engineering, Bangalore; Adithya Hegde and

Balaji V have participated and presented papers on “Effect

of Process Parameters on Machining Time in Abrasive

Water-jet Cutting of Marble” and “Effect of process parameters on the MRR while machining Zinc coated CI using

Wire EDM” respectively.

Adithya Hegde has won 2nd Prize in P.G. Section.
