CREATING OUR FUTURE

TOOR M I N AHIGH SCHOOL

WELCOME TO THSToormina High School welcomes year 7 students: Eden Cunningham, Billy-Joe Burnett, Jesse Hoskins, Reve Holmes and Jordan Maione to our Support Unit. The Support Unit has many exciting plans for 2015 including: a major gardening project, work experience and community access. All of these aim to develop student’s independence and enrich their education.

Chris BrowneHead Teacher Support

This year Toormina High is offering students in years 11 & 12 the opportunity to be part of its Senior Mentoring Program. The program aims to improve student’s writing across all subjects as they prepare for the HSC and has proven successful in other schools.

In order to do so I will be available for 1:1 mentoring sessions during normal school time, over most days of the week. Students must see me to book in for mentoring during either recess, lunch or before school in the Science staffroom or the CREST Mentoring Office (the old LAST office near the Careers Office). Year 12 will have priority.

I have set up a Website at http://crestseniormentoringprogram.weebly.com/ and an Edmodo group for students to access. Interested students should see me to book into the Mentoring Roster. Students can only book in during their free periods or, if they have no free periods, I will organise a time to suit.

The program aims to teach students the skills needed to:o Critically edit, draft and improve their own written work (including Assessment tasks)o Write thoughtful, sophisticated, well-structured responses suitable for their HSC subjects o Interpret questions/tasks specific to particular subject areas and apply this to their responseso Know, understand and use the high level vocabulary needed for specific HSC subject areaso Plan and manage their time efficientlyo Reflect on their own learning style and needso Cope with stress/problems o Summarise and study effectively prior to exams

Further information regarding this great opportunity is on the website or see me to book in and beat the rush.Julie RobertsHead Teacher – Teaching & Learning

TOORMINA HIGH SCHOOL UNIFORM UPDATEWelcome to the first update of the brand new THS Uniform Shop.We opened the 19/1 to 23/1 and we sold out of a couple of polo shirt sizes on the first day! To say the uniform has been well received is an understatement! The lines of parents and students wanting to buy the new uniform went right up the stairs. I have to admit to being a bit overwhelmed. It has been many years since working in retail but everyone was so patient and polite. A huge ‘THANK YOU’ to all of you who lined up and waited.

We have taken many orders and we are slowly getting them out. I have received another shipment of shirts but no shorts as yet. I am hoping they will arrive this week. The good news is a box of senior girls shirts have arrived. I haven't opened the box yet to know what sizes they are but any senior girls wanting a look can come in when the shop is open. We also have school jackets in stock - very nice.Just to finish up I want to say another big THANKS to my helpers these last couple of weeks, Hunter, Janelle and Shequana, Mrs Bellette, Mrs McDowell, the other lady whose name I didn't catch and Danica. I couldn't have done it without you.

CREATING OUR FUTURE

TOOR M I N AHIGH SCHOOL

Dear Parents,Welcome back and welcome to all our new families. The year looks to be exciting already. Students have really embraced the new uniform and they look wonderful in it. Thank you for your support in uniform. Now that we have our school uniform shop, no student needs to be out of uniform on any occasion – pending that the supplier can keep up with demand. If you need support with uniform, please see Michelle Bake in the uniform office as we want no student to suffer from family finance issues at this important time of the year with positive attitudes, expectations and eagerness to learn at their peak.A note to all parents: please observe the bus bay no stopping times to avoid costly fines. These fines will be imposed by council wardens even if a car drives through the bus bay during designated bus times, so park further away and walk back or park in the bay only from 9.00am to 3.00pm.Please contact me if I can be of help in any way. I hope we all enjoy a very happy and productive year.Best wishes,E. Donnan

QUEENSLAND UNIVERSITY TRIP The trip to Queensland Universities last year was an excellent experience. The universities were very informative, they gave us an insight into university life and the various programs offered such as exchange programs and scholarships.

We are now aware of the possibilities for our future, what we can achieve and how universities can benefit us not only in our future careers but also our life experiences.Unfortunately the trip was ‘dampened’ by a hail storm that left us stranded, cold and wet until we could access Union College. It was an experience we won’t forget!

High School philosophy ofcaring, sharing and

participating...

To our wonderfuloffice staff (first week

is a little bit mad!)

Michele Bake for all her hard work in the

uniform shop!

2015 is looking to be an exciting year for Toormina High School as we begin the first year of our new five year plan. Essential to the plan is the introduction of a number of key initiatives including the Intensive Literacy Program, Project Based Learning for Year 8 students, the Crest Mentoring Program for senior students and the After Hours Homework Centre. These new initiatives represent a significant investment in our junior and senior students with the aim to ensure they receive the best possible support to achieve their educational goals. I would encourage students to embrace these opportunities and if parents would like further information about them to contact the school on 6653 3077. Joanne Bellette - Deputy Principal

Welcome back to Toormina High School for 2015. I am looking forward to working with students and parents in my new role as Careers Adviser. At this time of the year, the main focus in the Careers Office is about settling year 11 students into their subject choices and making sure that year 12 students are on track with their study. For those students who have chosen a TAFE course as part of their pattern of study, you should have received an acceptance letter with details of starting dates, venue and times. If you have not received a letter, please come and see me. Most courses begin this week. Don't forget Toormina High School has a "Careers section" on our school website where students and parents can access information relating to careers. Mr Matt Francis is our new Transition Adviser for 2015 and he will be working out of the Careers Office at various times throughout the week. Please make him welcome. If you have any questions about Career pathway decisions, please make an appointment to see me. Robyn West - Careers Adviser
