Dr. Marie Clark Visit
Reports and Parent/Teacher Interviews
by countries all across the globe for science re-search purposes. Her speech inspired us to dream big, and to believe that women aren’t all about makeup or dresses and that they too can be leaders in Science.

Over the last few weeks, our teachers have been involved in writing individual mid-year student re-ports that will go home to parents on Friday 22nd June.
Teachers put in an enormous amount of effort to provide accurate and meaningful student reports.
They have continued to assess and evaluate student progress throughout the year, in order to provide parents with the most accurate account of student abilities.
Each student’s report will continue to have an “A-E” rating scale to evaluate a child’s achievement against the statewide standards, not against other students in your child’s class.
English speaking parent teacher interviews will be held on Monday 25th June and parents requir ing interpreters will be held on Tuesday 26th June.
Notes went home last week with children to select appropri-ate times for Parent/Teacher Interviews. Please ensure that these forms are returned as quickly as possi-ble so that you have the best opportunity to gain the time for the interviews you desire.
We look forward to discussing your child’s pro-gress during these times.
Last Wednesday many of the Year 5/6 children were lucky enough to hear about the exploits of Dr. Marie Clark and her adventure to Antarctica. Below is a recount of her presentation from two of our students who attend the extension writing pro-gram.
As we entered the vast hall, we knew that today was going to be a day like no other. Dr Marie Clark was visiting Dandenong North PS, to pro-vide intriguing information about her 4 week jour-ney to Antarctica.
A group of 78 intelligent women were selected to represent the Homeward Bound community. Homeward Bounds is a company that supports women as leaders for Science research.
Intrigued by her knowledge, we could soon visual-ise what it was like to experience the fresh air from the top of deserted mountains. She informed us about global warming - how soon enough the earth’s temperature may reach drastic measures. As thousands of curious hands rose from the audi-ence, we couldn’t help wondering how important it was to keep Antarctica in its pristine condition.
Marie Clark informed us that Antarctica was used

Mathletics in an online maths program that is of-fered free to children in Years 1 to 6. This program can be used both at home or at school for all chil-dren who have access to a computer and the inter-net at www.mathletics.com.au. Children have their own individual passwords and can complete tasks relevant to their educational development, which
have been set by their class teacher. They can also improve their fast mathematical recall times by competing in a live mathematical game against other children all around the world.
We encourage all children to log on and use this program to assist with their mathematical devel-opment.

Year 5/6 CERES Excursion
Last week all of the students in Years 5 and 6 went to CERES (Centre for Edu-cation and Re-search in Envi-ronmental Strat-egies) on either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.
The students have been fo-cusing on “What’s Our Impact” which highlights how hu-mans are having a negative effect on our planet. With this in mind, the excursion focused heavily upon what we can do as a society to make our planet healthier and to lessen our impact upon the environment.
Each class group over the three days, took part in three different activities.
There were gardening activities which allowed children the opportunity to plant seedlings, weed garden beds, feel the heat from compost, check out worm farms as well as feeding the chickens the weeds from the gardens.
There was the opportunity to make recycled pa-per. What a fantastic hands on process that al-lowed the students to see how shredded paper and water can be mixed into a watery pulp, be-fore a deckle is used to settle the paper pieces
into another sol-id piece of pa-per. The chil-dren were excit-ed to be able to take these back to school - they just need a little time to dry!
Students also enjoyed a walk along the Merri Creek which highlighted how the creek has
been rescued and nursed back to health by local residents.
When the children got back to school, they wrote “Did You Know” statements in relation to CERES - here are some:
Did You Know….
CERES used to be a quarry and then it was turned into landfill.
Community members didn't like living next to a rubbish dump, so they all worked hard to clean it up and make it a healthier place to live.
At CERES they have been excited to see the return of the Sacred Kingfisher - so they have a festival to celebrate in September.
Anyone can have a worm farm at their house as worms can help to make your soil healthy.
The name Merri comes from the Aboriginal people who used to love on the banks of the Merri Creek and it means “rocky” because the creek has a lot of rocks in it.
The students have come back and are invigorated to ensure that they reduce their impact on the plan-et by reusing items where they can and recycling objects to ensure that we are a more sustainable society.
Thanks to Miss Valcanis for organising this won-derful experience for the year 5/6 children.
