All eligible St. David’s HealthCare facilities were recently awarded an “A” from The Leapfrog Group’s Spring 2019 Hospital Safety Grades. The designation recognizes facilities’ efforts in protecting patients from harm and

providing safer healthcare. St. David’s HealthCare is the only hospital system in the Austin area to receive an “A” for all eligible facilities.

The Leapfrog Group is a national organiza-tion committed to improving healthcare quality and safety for patients. The Hospital Safety Grade assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and other harm to patients in their care.

St. David’s Medical Center, St. David’s North Austin Medical Center, St. David’s South Austin Medical Center, St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center and St. David’s Georgetown Hospital all received an “A” rating. These facilities were among 832 hospitals nationwide to earn this rating. St. David’s Medical Center has received straight “A” ratings since

The Leapfrog Group launched the Hospital Safety ScoreSM initiative in 2012. Heart Hospital of Austin and St. David’s Surgical Hospital were not included in the study completed by The Leapfrog Group because the facilities are considered specialty hospitals.

“We are dedicated to providing safe and effec-tive care to our patients,” Dr. Ken Mitchell, Chief Medical Officer of St. David’s Health-Care, said. “This recognition underscores the ongoing commitment to sustaining a culture of quality and safety by our doctors, nurses and staff.”

Developed under the guidance of a National Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety

Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transpar-ent, and the results are free to the public.

Zero HarmBy Sandra Fly, BSN, RN, CPHQ, CPPS, LSSYP, Director of Patient Safety and Regulatory, St. David’s HealthCare

No provider wants to get sued. We’ll never be able to eliminate risk en-tirely but managing risk appropriately can lead to zero harm, for patients and for doctors/practices.

Learning about the concept of zero harm was eye-opening for me. When Dr. Don Berwick, President Emeritus and Senior Fellow, Institute for Healthcare Improvement, was at the bedside, he used to say we get it right 99.9% of the time. He changed his thinking on this after coming across a slide that explained 99.9% reliability in more tangible terms, such as 20,000 incorrect prescriptions annually or 500 incorrect opera-tions each week. So, he realized that 99.9% reliability wasn’t enough. We must aim for 100% reliability…and zero harm!

He learned the definition of a day of zero, which encompassed:•zero complications of care•zero missed opportunities•zero overuse•zero lost revenue•zero harm events of any kind

The concept of zero harm now is introduced in every regulatory survey with good reason. Adopting this mindset not only yields more efficient care, it also goes a long way toward minimizing the risk of malpractice suits.

todd Steward Joins St. David’s Medical Center as CEOSt. David’s Medical Center selected Todd Steward, a longtime St. David’s HealthCare leader, as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). In this role, he provides executive leadership for St. David’s Medical Center, including the campuses of Heart Hospital of Austin and St. David’s Georgetown Hospital, as well as St. David’s Rehabilitation Hospital. Todd, who served as the CEO of St. David’s South Austin Medical Center for nine years, assumed his new role on April 29, 2019. He replaces Don Wilkerson, who recently retired after a four decade-long career in healthcare, including 20 years with St. David’s HealthCare.

“St. David’s Medical Center has a century-long history of national prominence in high-quality patient care, operational performance and world-class clinical programs, and I am confident that Todd will continue to build on its legacy,” David Huffstutler, President and Chief Executive Officer of St. David’s HealthCare, said. “Todd’s experience leading the operations of a large and complex facility, along with his business development experi-ence and his reputation for creating a positive, values-based culture with physicians, board members and colleagues, make him especially qualified to lead and advance the strategic growth agenda of St. David’s Medical Center.”

Todd has 26 years of experience in acute care inpatient hospital management, healthcare consulting and physician practice management. During his time at St. David’s South Austin Medical Center, he led strategic initiatives to expand the hospital’s clinical capabili-ties, including establishing the region’s first and only adult blood cancer and bone marrow transplant program and developing a Level II Trauma program. He also led the hospi-tal through a growth and capacity expansion process to accommodate the increasing demand for healthcare services in south Austin, which included more than $160 million in capital investment projects, including two major hospital expansions, developing three freestanding emergency centers and acquiring two ambulatory surgery centers.

Prior to joining St. David’s HealthCare, Todd served as Chief Executive Officer of HealthONE’s North Suburban Medical Center, a 157-bed acute care hospital in Denver, Colorado. Earlier in his career, he served as Chief Operating Officer of Lakeview Regional Medical Center, a 185-bed medical-surgical hospital in Covington, Louisiana.

St. David’s Medical Center among First in texas to Use innovative Surgical technology for Spinal Procedures

Robotic guidance platform improves accuracy, reduces procedure and recovery time

St. David’s Medical Center recently began using new, innovative technology for improved spinal procedures. The hospital is among the first in Texas to perform spinal surgeries using the Mazor X Stealth™ Edition Robotic Guid-ance Platform. This technology allows surgeons to improve accuracy by offering comprehensive visualization before the surgery begins.

The robotic guidance platform features interactive, 3-D planning tools for real-time im-age guidance, allowing for easier manipulation during minimally invasive procedures.

“The future of surgery involves the marriage of robotics and navigation software,” Dr. Rick Wupperman, orthopedic spine surgeon at St. David’s Medical Center, said. “Robotic guidance platforms allow surgeons to operate with greater precision and efficiency.”

The innovative surgical technology can be used for precise positioning of surgical instruments or spinal implants during open or minimally invasive spinal procedures.

SDGH Employee Saves Local veteran on veterans Day

Exercise physiologist Lydia Miller of St. David’s Georgetown Hospital’s Cardiac Rehabilitation department sprang into action when a churchgoer had a heart attack in the middle of a service.

Lydia performed CPR and used an automated external defibrillator (AED) to help Gary Hoffman regain a pulse, even though that AED was over a decade old. Gary Hoffman, a U.S. Navy veteran, was at Kingsland Community Church on Veterans Day last fall to participate in a tribute to veterans at the church.

“Gary’s crisis was a life-or-death situation. Had the defibrillator not worked, I’m not sure of Gary’s survival chance,” Lydia said. “We experienced a miracle that day. We’re all so thankful Gary is still here with us.”

Gary served as a color guard, and after placing the flag, he sang in the choir. But shortly after the song ended, he collapsed and became unresponsive.

After two shocks were administered, he regained a pulse.

Gary, who is back in good health, recently surprised Lydia with a visit to St. David’s Georgetown Hospital. He and his wife also purchased a new AED for the church to show their appreciation.

Lydia believes Gary’s medical emergency serves as a great reminder that we must all learn CPR and ensure AEDs are functional.
