By REX DRABIK THE Shire of Esperance says the remaining sec- tion of the iconic Esperance Tanker Jetty is being assessed by engi- neers to determine its structural integrity prior to next month’s planned re-opening. Engineers from BMT JFA Consultants, a coastal and maritime engineering company specialising in dredging, ports and harbour devel- opment, have been exam- ining the condition of the superstructure timber and also the jetty’s fixings, such as bolts. Shire of Esperance chief executive Matthew Scott said the findings of the assessment would be used to ensure the jetty was safe for public use once re-opened. “The assessment is being conducted for pub- lic safety purposes. “We want to make sure that the jetty is safe,” Mr Scott said. Refurbishment of the Tanker Jetty, which included the removal of the first 80 metres of the original structure, is one of four key stages in the $59 million Esperance Waterfront Project, aimed at enhancing the Esperance foreshore and protecting infrastructure from coastal erosion.
