THE Shire of Esperancesays the remaining sec-tion of the iconicEsperance Tanker Jetty isbeing assessed by engi-neers to determine itsstructural integrity priorto next month’s plannedre-opening.
Engineers from BMTJFA Consultants, acoastal and maritimeengineering companyspecialising in dredging,ports and harbour devel-opment, have been exam-ining the condition of thesuperstructure timber andalso the jetty’s fixings,such as bolts.
Shire of Esperancechief executive MatthewScott said the findings ofthe assessment would beused to ensure the jettywas safe for public useonce re-opened.
“The assessment isbeing conducted for pub-
lic safety purposes. “We want to make
sure that the jetty is safe,”Mr Scott said.
Refurbishment of theTanker Jetty, whichincluded the removal ofthe first 80 metres of the
original structure, is oneof four key stages in the$59 million EsperanceWaterfront Project, aimed
at enhancing theEsperance foreshore andprotecting infrastructurefrom coastal erosion.

ESPERANCE police are investi-gating a number of reports of eggsthrown at addresses along Castle -town Quays and throughout thesub urb.
Most of the incidents have beenreported in the past few months,but the most recent occurred at8pm on Friday evening.
Police Sergeant Swadkins saidit is believed that a number of peo-ple on scooters were riding downCastletown Quays and throwingeggs at houses.
“We will be stepping up patrolsin that area in particular over theweekends,” he said.
“Anyone caught throwing eggscan and will be charged.”
If a person is found to beengaging in such an activity whileusing a vehicle on the road, trafficoffences can also apply.
❑❑❑ RESIDENTS are encouraged tocall the Esperance Police Stationimmediately if they hear the soundof gunshots.
Sgt Swadkins said the stationreceived a report from a memberof the public who had heard whatsounded like gunshots fired in the
Walmsley Street area inCastletown around 5pm.

❑❑❑POLICE responded to two disor-derly incidents in town onSaturday, July 21 in the centralbusiness district.
At 1.30am, police were calledto a large fight at a licensed prem-ises where two groups of malesfought each other.
The group spilled into the carpark before officers attended andsplit them up.
Several of the group membersreceived minor injuries.
Officers are in the process ofviewing CCTV footage and arelooking to charge offenders identi-fied to police.
If charged, police will seek toplace a barring notice on theoffenders, which could restrictthem from entering any licensedpremises in Western Australia forup to 12 months.
At 5.10am on the same day,two intoxicated males becameinvolved in a fight outside a shopon Andrew Street.
Police again attended and sepa-rated the men.
One was admitted to theEsperance District Hospital with asprained ankle.
Police are looking to chargeboth offenders with disorderlybehaviour.
Sgt Swadkins said police willnot tolerate intoxicated or drunkenpersons causing a disturbance tothe public.
“In all cases, charges will belaid and barring notices will besought,” he said.
❑❑❑ESPERANCE police received anumber of calls regarding a suspi-cious person hanging aroundproperties on Magnolia Crescentin Castletown.
Reports indicated sightingsacross Saturday and Sunday nightin both the front and rear yards ofhouses on the street.
Police have received a descrip-tion of a tall, Caucasian male whoappeared intoxicated in the area.
Sgt Swadkins said residents inthe area should pay attention toany suspicious noises or sightsand report all activity to police on9079 8999.

THE Esperance Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service werecalled to a fire after concerns were raised about smokecoming from bushland. Last Thursday crews attended asection of bushland at the corner of Windich andGladstone streets at 1.10pm. The service’s captain MickRose said the smoke was caused by a resident burningoff plants. He said the the fire was under control.
