    Supporting local business:Cygnus Automotive

Aidan with Steve Cartwright General Manager of CygnusAutomotive and Cllr Mike Sutherland.

As part of his commitment to supporting local businesses, Aidanvisited Cannock based manufacturing company Cygnus Automotivelast week, where he heard about the success of the firm and agreedto work with the Government to try and help solve a problem affectingthe business.Cygnus Automotive was founded in 1989 to design and manufacturea simple taximeter for the London Taxi International (the makers ofthe London taxi). Employing 16 staff in Cannock and 8 in London, they currently have 13,000 taximeters on rent in London and manythousands of meters operating around the UK and Ireland. Cygnushas gone on to design a number of taximeters and has nowestablished itself as the leading UK taximeter manufacturer. In 2003

Cygnus introduced its first CCTV system designed for use in taxis. This has been particularly successful in New York where they haveexported 2,000 systems during the last three years.During the visit Aidan has pledged to lobby the Government on behalfof the company to see what can be done to bring about a more levelplaying field in terms of taxi metering requirements across differentlocal authorities. There is currently wide discrepancy betweendifferent areas in terms of the accuracy of recording equipment, despite a 1976 Act requiring consistent standards across the UK.Commenting, Aidan said: It is vital that companies like Cygnus haveaccess to the widest possible market, and the law as it currently

stands should be implemented equally across the country by all localauthorities so that passengers journeys and taxi fares are accuratelyrecorded by this equipment.

MP warns of bogus doorstep collectorsin Cannock ChaseAidan is warning constituents who give unwanted goods on theirdoorstep to charitable causes to take care in ensuring that the goods

will reach genuine charity beneficiaries.Supporting the Bogus Bags campaign, Aidan said, "We are awarethat there are some bogus operators collecting goods and giving thefalse impression that they are being sold for charitable causes. Insome parts of the country, genuine charity collection bags have alsobeen stolen from residents' doorsteps."Not only is this a crime against local householders, but charities arelosing out on millions in lost income each year. I am encouragingCannock Chase residents to make a few simple checks so that youcan give with confidence to the charities that so desperately needyour support".

Alistair McLean, Chief Executive of the Fundraising Standards Board(FRSB), adds "While charity bag crime is a worry for all, we askdonors to remember that the large majority of collections arelegitimate and that charities rely heavily on this income stream."The Bogus Bags campaign is led by the Fundraising Standards Board(FRSB) and supported by fellow industry bodies; the Institute ofFundraising (IoF), Charity Retail Association and Textile RecyclingAssociation. The campaign aims to help the public give confidently tothe charities they care about, offering this simple advice to localresidents:

Check Legitimate charity collection bags will clearly state

what organisation(s) funds are being raised for and feature aregistered charity number. Check these details with theCharity Commission www.charitycommission.gov.uk.

Look for the tick As with any fundraising appeal, you canlook for the FRSB tick logo indicating that the charity issigned up to fundraising regulation and to industry standards.See www.givewithconfidence.org.uk.

Call A collector would ensure there is a working landlinetelephone number on fundraising materials for you to contactthem on.

Report - After making these checks, if you think that a

collection is not legitimate, report it to Action Fraud on 0300123 2040 or visit www.actionfraud.org.uk.

Charity collections of household goods are an important way of notonly reducing waste and preserving the environment, but ofgenerating vital funding for good causes. Charities deliver brandedbags to households asking the public to fill them with unwantedclothes and goods for a set collection date. Whether collected goodsare passed on for resale at charity shops, sold overseas or recycled, they can generate a solid income stream for good causes.

Aidan welcomes action onHigh Speed 2

Aidan campaigning for HS2 with pop mogul and rail fanaticPete Waterman last year.

Aidan has welcomed the Government's announcement that theproposed high-speed rail route (HS2) linking London to the WestMidlands and the north of England will go ahead.Adding up to 26,000 more seats for rail passengers, and slashing

journey times by as much as half, HS2 will help create jobs, growthand prosperity for Cannock Chase and the country as a whole.Commenting, Aidan said: "This is great news for Cannock Chase anda massive investment by the government in the economy of the WestMidlands. This project will support 40,000 jobs in the first phase alone,

provide a boost to growth and deal with growing congestion on our

railways. Local businesses will be more closely linked to the engineroom of the south east and have far quicker access to clients andmarkets in London."This follows on from the recent announcement by Network Rail toapprove the line speed upgrade of the Chase Line, which will helplocal people to travel into Walsall and Birmingham in half the time. I

personally remain committed to lobbying the government for fullelectrification of the Chase Line over the coming years".

Police and crime commissionerelections 2012This week Aidan met with a local resident interested in running for therole of Staffordshire Police and Crime Commissioner in the first everelections for the role on this year.

On 15th November 2012 each of the 41 police force areas in Englandand Wales, outside of London, will directly-elect a Commissioner.Commissioners are at the heart of the Coalition Government'sprogramme of decentralisation, where power is returned to peopleand communities. Instead of bureaucratic, Whitehall-led control of thepolice we will see democratic accountability with the public having areal say over how their area is policed. What Will Police and crime commissioners do?

Commissioners will be local figures with powerful mandatesfrom the public to drive the fight against crime and anti-socialbehaviour.

Commissioners will decide policing strategy and the forcebudget. They will set the local council tax precept and appoint- and if necessary dismiss - the chief constable. And all of thiswill be done on behalf of the public who elect them.

Police and Crime Commissioners will replace the existingpolice authorities and have a much larger role.

As their title - Police and Crime Commissioners - suggeststhey will have a broad remit to ensure community safety, withtheir own budgets to prevent crime and tackle drugs.

Working with local authorities, community safety partnershipsand local criminal justice boards, Commissioners will helpbring a strategic coherence to the actions of theseorganisations across each police force.

The Commissioners will also have responsibility for strategicpolicing - they will have to address national issues as well aslocal concerns.

    A single and accountable individual

Commissioners will be a single elected individual who willtake executive decisions, supported by a highly qualifiedteam.

The principle of one accountable individual, directlyresponsible for the totality of police force activity is central tothe Government's vision of the new policing landscape.

The buck will stop with commissioners, and the public will

cast judgement at the ballot box, voting out commissionerswho don't cut crime or address local concerns.

But Police and Crime Commissioners won't have day-to-daycontrol over operational policing - they won't be able to tell asworn officer of the crown who to arrest.

Aidan Burley MP, who conducted much of the early policy work thatled to Police and Crime Commissioners becoming a Governmentpriority, said, "The elections this November are a really exciting stepin bringing real local accountability to the way our local Police operate.

"I was delighted to meet with someone interested in running for thisrole locally this week and really encourage everyone who thinks theycould take on this important role to think about putting their nameforward."
