A cartoon by Dave Walker shows a church full of pews and empty of people. The caption reads ‘the church is empty’, a hint at what many people think about the life of our churches. But it is followed by a second cartoon full of people with a caption reading ‘the people are outside having a party’.

Some church communities naturally get out beyond the walls of their buildings for fetes or processions, tending the graveyard or their neighbourhood mire widely. Others, particularly where the surroundings feel more hostile, are tempted to retreat behind the walls of the church, and it takes energy and effort to get out.

A decade ago the cathedral began to celebrate ordinations with a party on what the then Precentor called the ‘cathedral patio’. It felt quite risky and daring, because the space had been occupied by others, including street drinkers and drug dealers, but people began to enjoy the space. So we’ve used it since for barbecues and food fairs, street theatre and Morris Dancing. Canon David Montieth has encouraged the community to create Easter and Christmas gardens which have been talking points for the many who pass by (and, we have discovered, know nothing about the Christian faith). Meanwhile Canon Barry Naylor, aware of the chaos in the city as thousands came in to pubs and clubs, set up Street Pastors to be the church on the nighttime streets. He and Bishop Tim noticed how other faith communities told their story through processions, and created Christ in the Centre, one of the largest Good Friday events in the country. All of us have gained confidence, and people around us

have discovered something of our life in Christ. When we moved to St Martins House it was natural to begin every choral service with a procession linking our new centre with the cathedral. We will sometimes be wet and windswept as we worship, but our neighbours will be reminded that daily worship is one of our disciplines.

As the days get lighter and the weather warmer, and as the church year takes us through the events of Jesus’ life, every church has the opportunity to get out more, to tell our story of faith in ritual or working group or party or conversation, and to ensure that those who think that churches are empty know that is because we are all outside in witness and service

Introducing the new

What a delight it was to welcome His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, to Launde Abbey on January 25th. For the staff and all those involved in the refurbishment of the Abbey it was the final piece in the jigsaw that made all the hard work and effort during the building works worthwhile.

It was fitting that the Prince’s visit came at the end of a busy day and he was able to fully appreciate the peace and tranquillity that is so obvious to everyone who visits the Abbey, a point His Royal Highness emphasised in his speech at the official Opening Ceremony.

After sharing in Worship in our beautiful Medieval Chapel, the Prince of Wales spent some time looking at the icons on the East wall, followed by a tour of the building led by Bishop Tim Stevens and Tim Blewett, the Abbey’s Warden. During the tour His Royal Highness visited many of the newly refurbished rooms, including the new Library where guests and visitors can spend time reading, writing or just sitting in quiet contemplation. There are easy chairs and sofas within, all making for a very comfortable experience. In fact, the ‘new’ Abbey is full of quiet seating areas with plenty of space for all of our guests, whether they are here for a Quiet Day, meeting friends or just wanting to sit and take some time out from their busy lives.

The dining facilities at Launde have also been given a makeover, with a lovely bright dining room, complete with french doors overlooking the gardens to the rear of the Abbey. To complement the main dining facilities there is an additional quiet dining

room, suitable for groups on silent retreat or those requiring confidential dining, perhaps during a meeting.

Over the past year we have welcomed primary and secondary school pupils who have benefited greatly from coming to Launde Abbey, as part of their curriculum, as well as those undertaking Duke of Edinburgh Awards. The Prince of Wales met several children during his visit and praised the Abbey for its work with schools, which we hope will continue into the future, with visits from religious studies students, as well as larger school groups preparing for Confirmation anticipated over the coming year.

Above, Prince Charles is welcomed by Bishop Tim and Civic Dignitaries. Below, Project Manager, Ian Neale talks about the restoration work

Our new Programme for 2011 mirrors the new look of the Abbey. Alongside favourites, such as the Lent, Holy Week, Individually Guided and CARM Retreats, we have a number of new retreats planned, such as a Music Retreat and a brand new Painting Holiday: Watercolours for complete beginners and improvers. John Bell will be joining us again this year, as well as Margaret Silf, Liz Babbs, James Shakespeare, Glenn Martin and our new Deputy Warden, Audrey Atkinson, who will also be running retreats. Alongside these there will be Working Holidays in the Spring and Summer and the ever popular Walking Holiday. A number of courses and Quiet Days are also planned, including a new series of Cookery Demonstrations, which include a two-course supper - a great night out with friends! Finally, we are also running our Snowdrop Spectaculars on a variety of dates during February and March. For a copy of the Programme please contact the Office at Launde Abbey and we will be glad to send you one.

Launde continues to be open to all, so, if you don’t have time for a longer stay, why not come and visit us for lunch with friends or just a coffee or afternoon tea after a walk around our gardens. We would love to show you our new home.

I’m not talking about acquiring an image carved, painted or otherwise created of Christ or any of the many Hindu options but rather my experience of finding God in new and creative ways as I walked around the shops here in Trichy.I went with two purposes in mind:1) acquiring beautiful Indian clothing, and2) experiencing shopping Indian style – a sort of cultural immersion

What actually happened was both of these and also some reflections on my understanding of God and of us as God’s people.

I found that as we, a group of white English women, ventured into a five storey shop we entered a world of material and clothing that displayed more colour and decoration than we could possibly have imagined but also a world of help and connection. We chose our material, some by simply asking for what caught their eye and others by asking for a particular colour range. All of us found beautiful pieces of material.

At this point in the UK I might have expected to take my purchase to a till, pay and leave, but here the gentlemen (three of them) serving us helped to put on the sari. We experienced some difficulty as they tried to explain how to ‘tuck in’ the pleats without actually touching the sari or us. Two of us had attempted this with some success but on our third attempt an Indian woman moved from her smiling, observing role, swiftly dismissed the gentlemen and began to fold, hold and tuck the sari. She showed no hesitation in instructing me to hold the end. When the process was finished

she laughed with delight and hugged Harriet, who was now in her sari, cupping her face in her hand and beaming (below).

For me, in that encounter, there were some serious challenges. How do I interact with those who are strangers to me? Am I as natural at connecting with then as the woman was with me?

Somehow her physical touch spoke of a connection as human beings that I have rarely experienced. It moved me so much I think because it reminded me of one moment in my many years of ministry where I assisted a parishioner in hospital. I knew her a little bit but not very well. She was dying, she lay still in her bed, I was unsure whether she even knew I was there but, as I leaned over and said “It’s Alison, can I pray with you?”, she moved her hand to cup my cheek and her “Amen” was the last word I heard her say. It was for me a moment of connection and I saw a reflection of that here in India. For me I am treasuring the parable of the sari where we struggled together as English women to learn this art of dressing but in our struggle one came to us who transformed us and who took great delight in doing so holding us in the palm of her hand.

This is one of the stories from the Curates during their visit. You can read more athttp://trichyvisit.dioceseofleicester.com/

Christ in the Centre 2011 will feature a new lead actor – Walt Kissack – in the role of Jesus. James Burke-Dunsmore, who has played the role every year since 2005, will be performing in a similar production in London this year.

James will still direct the 2011 Leicester production, and has written the first act for this year’s event, which is themed around hospitality and sharing of food, and a reflection on God’s hospitality towards human-kind.

The 2011 presentation will be staged on Good Friday Easter April 22nd, with the first act again being staged at St Peter’s Square, HighCross, before a procession down High Street to Humberstone Gate for the finale, which depicts Christ’s passion, trial, crucifixion and resurrection.

Christ in the Centre depicts the true story of Easter. Apart from the lead role, the entire cast is made up of local amateur actors. The event has been staged in the middle of Leicester every year since 2003.

Walk Kissack is a Sheffield-born professional actor. He trained at the Arden School of Theatre, Manchester. Now London-based, he has played the role of Jesus in various productions, most notably with the Riding Lights Theatre company.

His most recent work is something of a contrast with his new role: he has just finished performing

in the title role of a new film about the Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe. The film – an independent production - is due to be released around Easter this year and may well be shown in cinemas nationwide.

He has just started rehearsing with the Leicester cast, and is looking forward to the production:

“It is exciting to be rehearsing something that is not just a piece of theatre, but the story of Jesus passion taken out onto the streets of the city. I have heard a lot about the Leicester audience and how it reacts, and I am really looking forward to being part of a very special experience.

“It is the first time I have worked with an amateur cast like this, but my reaction from early rehearsals is there is nothing amateur about them. They all have other jobs and other lives, but they bring such a sense of commitment and dedication, and have such talent. I am really looking forward to performing with them”.

James Burke-Dunsmore admits that preparing the cast for an event in which he will not be acting is a great challenge:

“It is very different to stand back and observe a cast rather than being right in the middle of them. But it enables me to see fresh things every time”.

Anyone who wants to get involved in the event should contact Hilary Ayling, Assistant Director, on 07963 311210 or [email protected], or for fund raising and technical roles, Jonathan Wheeler (0116 220 9318 or [email protected]) or visit www.christinthecentre.co.uk

Let’s Celebr8 The Chamber Choir from Leicester High School for Girls were invited to sing at St Mary Magdalen’s “Let’s Celebr8” service in January. The girls sang beautifully and delighted the whole congregation with their performance of two songs from the choir’s repertoire: “As I went down to the river to pray” and “You raise me up”.The choir won their section at the Leicester Music Festival in 2009/10, including The Leicester Mercury Bowl, and will be performing at The Peterborough Festival on Friday 25th March this year.
