LLANFERRES OVER 60's Club

Our meeting in February was, as expected, very enjoyable. TheReverend Bailey’s talk about “The Archers” was both nostalgic andinformative. He is one of the 23,000 members of the programme’sFan Club, who have until recently attended conventions, backed bythe BBC. He brought with him lots of memorabilia, books, tea towels, photographs etc. etc. gathered at their reunions. Sadly the presentproducers have disbanded the Club, but fortunately have continuedwith programme.

Our talk on 11th March will be given by Mr. D. Roe on the history ofAberduna Hall, on the Maeshafn Road; one not to be missed.

If you can join us at any meeting at a cost of £2, which covers thespeaker’s expenses, refreshments and a raffle ticket, please contacteither:

Elements of the family lived inGwernymyndd, Tafarn-y-Gelyn andlatterly Plas Newydd on Rectory Lane (aswell as a "visitor" Charles Bratt a 28 yearold, single motor mechanic from Peover)

Edwin enlisted in Birkenhead in thereserve 4th T.A. Battalion CheshireRegiment later to become attached to the9th (Service) battalion 58th Brigade, 19th(Western) Division probably in late 1916whilst living in Birkenhead.

The battalion had been involved early inthe battle of the Somme suffering over 300casualties in 4 days, initially attacking atnight near La Boiselle withoutreconnaissance, where "every shell holeheld a dead or wounded man".

May 1917 saw the battalion at Ypres inBelgium in preparation for the battle ofMessines, possibly the scene of the greatestBritish victory of the war. On June 7th at3.10am following an unnecessarypreparatory bombardment by 2,300 heavyguns, 19 huge underground mines, over amillion pounds (almost 500 tonnes) wereexploded under the Messines Ridgeinstantly vaporising as many as 10,000German defenders. Over 8,000 metres oftunnels had been dug over an 18 monthperiod in preparation, and the resultant

consecutive explosions over 30 seconds, heard as far away as Dublin - the largestever man made explosion to that date.

During the successful attack behind acreeping barrage, with tanks and gas the9th battalion suffered 158 casualties of the17,000 in total - the first ever battle whereattacking casualties were fewer thandefending (25,000+)

[It was later in the battle that 2ndLieutenant Hugh Colvin of the 9th was towin a Victoria Cross - his citation reads"For conspicuous bravery in attack. Whenall other officers of his company and all butone of the leading company had becomecasualties, he assumed command of bothcompanies, and led them with great dashand success. During the same attack heattacked several dug-outs, one of whichcontained a machine gun. This he captured, and in all took about fifty prisoners singlehanded"]

Llanferres in the Great War

Edwin was born in early 1898, the son ofJohn Hughes Edwards and his second wifeMargaret Edwards (née Parry - died 1906).

He had an older half brother from hisfather's first marriage, a step brother fromhis mother's first marriage and an older andyounger sister. His father had several listedoccupations as coachman, farmer and in the1911 census "of independent means" thenmarried to Adeline, (née Salmon) his thirdwife for 4 years.

In March 1918, the battalion was stationedagain near Bapaume on the Somme (wherethey ended 1916). An attack was expectedthe next day (21st) "according tostatements of captured enemy officers andmen". The 522 Ordinary Ranks of thebattalion were ordered to stand-to at5.35am and later began the retreat: a briefcounter attack was made at 7pm atDoignies, before retreating north westwardagain at 11pm, harassed throughout theday by large numbers of low flying enemyaircraft.

The next 4 days saw a confusing series ofwithdrawals and counter attacks as thelosses mounted, but severe casualties alsocaused to the enemy who were "seen to fallin large numbers"

On the evening of the 25th the battalionwith stragglers attempted to organise asingle line defence in old trenches west ofBapaume, hardly completed, and withgreat difficulty in the dark, when furtherorders were received to retire further toGrevillers, completed by daylight, andimmediately attacked by machine gun andthen a full frontal assault, forcing a furtherretreat. The official history states "Germaninfantrymen on coming under close rangerifle fire had "gone to earth" and shown adisposition to return whence they came. The German O.C. evidently recalled themall and paraded his battalion in mass in fullview of the 9th, but out of rifle range.Through glasses he and his officers could

be seen riding round the battalionpresumably giving them the length of histongue. To their chagrin, our people couldnot get in touch with the artillery"

The battalion finally went into, theoretical, reserve midday on the 26th, after 5 days ofnear continuous movement and action, atFonquevillers ("Funky Villas") to berelieved by the 4th Australian Division. Afurther move was made to Sailly-au-boisthat evening and billets occupied by 9pmand "cookers and water carts ordered",their first meal for 2 days at 6am,interrupted less than 3 hours later by afurther attack.

A defence line was formed east of Souastre"by all troops available" to cover theretreat of the transports, and it was verylikely that Edwin was killed in thesubsequent attack, although his body wasnever found, one of 23 killed in action thatmorning, and 3 dying of wounds (noofficers), aged just 20.

Edwin is commemorated on the ArrasMemorial - the third largest in France withalmost 35,000 names of the missing. He isalso commemorated on his parents' gravein Llanferres Churchyard. He was postumately awarded the BritishWar medal and the Victory medal.

General Herbert Plumer, a meticulous planner, in charge ofthe 2nd Army at the Battle of Messines Ridge - a prelude tothe Battle of Passchendaele. 22 mine shafts were dug underGerman positions and packed with ammonal (essentiallyfertilizer) He is said to have remarked on the eve of the battle"Gentlemen, we may not make history tomorrow, but we willcertainly change geography". 3 mines were unused, one wasdiscovered by the Germans, one exploded in 1955 during anelectrical storm (casualties - one cow) and the exact positionof the final mine (50,000lb) is still disturbingly unknown!

A note from your County CouncillorAs the county andcountry recover fromsome of the worststorms on recordmost areas are stillclearing up the debrisfrom the storms. The

teams who were due to clear our gulliesthis month may take a little longer tocomplete the work as they have beenworking on clearing fallen trees acrossthe county. Many villages in the wardwere effected by power cuts and theNant Y Garth Pass was closed for twodays due to the large number of fallentrees. There should be no shortage ofwood for the log burners this year!!

The county has come to a final decisionon its budgets for the coming year.

We had to find eight million in savingsand this was done by reviewing thebudgets for all departs except educationwhich is ring fenced. Many of the savingswere found by reviewing the way wework and by not filling some vacantposts. Sadly the merger and closure ofsome rural schools has also meant thatthe running costs for those buildingscould be included in the savings budget.Subsidies for external organisations werereduced and all our leisure centres mustnow pay their way which they are nowdoing.

The county has an ambitious programmeof building new schools especially in Rhylover the next few years and funding fromreserves will in part be matched by theWelsh Government.

As part of the budget process to balancethe books half a million will be taken outof reserves and council tax will rise by3.5% one of the lowest in Wales.Did you know that Denbighshireresidents are the best for recycling inWales and this saved £400,000 in land filltax which again helped our budgets.

Next year will be even more difficult asthere is no fat left and difficult decisionswill have to be made at a time when localgovernment reorganisation is also in theback ground.

Speed measurements have beenundertaken on the forestry road at twosites. By Bryn Eithin the average speedwas well below thirty miles per hour andthe second site between the two MoelFamau car parks were very similar exceptfor one driver who exceed sixty one milesper hour and two who were over fifty.

Because of the small number of baddrivers and the fact that most drivers weretravelling along this stretch of road atthirty five or less the county do not feel achange in the speed limit is justified atthis time. They also felt that an increase toforty may only increase the average speed. The three speeders were driving along theroad between 7.00am and 9.00amtravelling in the direction of Mold fromRuthin. This is locally known as the rat run.

I intend to ask the Drive Alive team to visitthe area at those times to warn theseindividuals.

Tyn Lan will be resurfaced over half termand residents will be able to access theirproperties during the road works. Letterswill be issued to all parties concernedexplaining how this will work.

I am also pleased to confirm that thepavement between Tyn Lan and thechurch has also been repaired.

There is a public consultation going on atthe moment on the subject of grasscutting. Please let us know where andwhen you would like your grass verges cut.

Best wishes, Martyn

The recent weather has seemeddismal to humans but the birds seemto be getting on with life as normal. The 'dawn chorus' is building as birdscompete for mates or breedingterritories. Blackbirds , with bell-likeclear notes combined in phrases, areusually the earliest singers but aresoon followed by the somewhatsimilar sounding Mistle thrush whichrepeats its phrases several times andaccounts for it sometimes beingknown as the 'Three thrush'. Theseare quickly followed by the cascadingnotes of the Chaffinch which alwaysend in a flourish; the strident andmonotonous 'teacher- teacher' cry ofthe Great tit, contrasting withslightly quieter call of 'to me - to me'coming from the Coal tit. One canusually pick out the gentle warble ofa Dunnock and the familiar song ofthe Robin, which we hear all winterbut is now becoming bolder andslightly longer. But for me, to hearthe most delightful song one mustadjoin to the river and listen to themuted song of the Dipper. Dipperssing all year but their song is oftendrowned by the sound of the rushingwater but if one listens carefully, nearto a nesting territory at this time ofyear, one can sometimes beentertained with a long warble ofliquid and grating notes. It is oftendifficult to determine where the songis coming from, for they seem to beable to 'throw their voice' somedistance but it is usually possible tospot a flash of its white breast, oftenon a rock in the river. Dippers areearly nesters usually building inMarch but sometimes as early asFebruary.

But they are not the only earlybreeders. On our garden lawn I havenoticed Wood pigeons in amorousdisplay and Dunnocks are lookingvery frisky. Ravens and Mistlethrushes will probably already havelaid eggs and Rooks are back at therookeries but perhaps only stakingclaim to their old nests, as I have notseen them carrying sticks yet, andsimilarly Herons are standing guardand repelling any possible intruders.Herons sometimes suffer highmortality rates in hard winters whentheir feeding lakes freeze over butthey should have fared pretty well, sofar this winter.

Wild flowers are beginning toproliferate. Snowdrops are in fullflower, Primroses face their blooms tothe sun on bright days, Lessercelandine proliferates in places,Daisies and buttercups are flowering,I have seen road verges bright withDandelions and in gardens Crocusspread their petals wide open to catchthe sun and attract insects on brightdays. All these will be very welcomeby Bumblebees that should beemerging from hibernation very soon, for the earliest species often come outin late February. It will beinteresting to see how they havesurvived this mild but wet winter forthey often suffer with fungalinfections if the hibernacula becomesdamp. Last year they survived well, for they can produce a type ofantifreeze to stop the body cellsfreezing, and they stayed inhibernation until the weatherwarmed after the March snow.
