Thanks for the book resources Altrusa Sophia Max and son Alex from Altrusa International of Ohariu donated four books on 'Girls and Coding' to our school library. We were pleased to receive a set of Girls Who Code for our school library donated from Altrusa Ohariu. Their project “Get set for a brighter future” has provided over 250 brand new books into the local community this month including all 26 schools in the Ohariu Electrorate area and Arohata Prison. Altrusa hopes that the books donated will provide positive role models for girls who may be encouraged to pursue STEM careers, and offer teachers a wider variety of teaching resources. Altrusa welcomes new ideas and aims to provide flexibility so that our members can give their time in a way that works for them. Meetings are held at 7.30pm on the second Thursday of each month in central Johnsonville. Guests are always welcome; contact the Club President to arrange a no obligation visit and see what Altrusa is all about!

Nathan Ryan telling Kanuka and Puriri about Space Camp USA – By William in Puriri Last Friday we had a very special guest who came to talk to us about his experiences at the NASA boot camp in the USA. His name is Nathan Ryan and he is a former student at Newlands School.

The first thing I noticed was that he was wearing some bright blue flying overalls. This made him look like he was from space. We were all really excited to hear about his experiences overseas.

He told us he went on a two-week journey to the USA where he was trained in different skills just like a real astronaut.

My favourite activity was him doing indoor sky diving so they could practice being weightless in space. I think Ryan may have inspired some kids to look at being an engineer or a pilot in the future. He certainly in-spired me to want to go to the space camp.

Attendance Term 2 In light of the major sickness outbreak during the latter part of Term 2, where the Public Health Department were monitoring our rate of absenteeism due to common symptoms of coughs, fevers, tummy upsets and other ‘flu-like’ issues, the absentee rates are not reliably able to be used as a trend indicator for Term 2. However, the general attendance rate for the children not sick was incredibly pleasing.

Typically, sick children were absent for well over a week, with many returning to school only to fall sick again for a few more days. We had such a bad run with whole whanua taken out with sickness.

A wee summary from Term 2 Every Day Counts shows: In the week of May 6 the attendance rate was 96.1%, compared to the attendance in the week of June 25 that was 85%. The average attendance for Term 2 was 91% which is very pleasing considering how sick many of our tamariki were. Sickness was the main reason for absenteeism, with holidays being the next most common reason for being away from school.

Newlands School continues to rate higher for attendance across all year levels in comparison to other Wellington schools, other decile 8 schools, other co-educational schools, and all schools in Aotearoa. Newlands School also rates higher in attendance for all ethnicities and for both boys and girls.

Thank you everyone for getting your children to school as often as possible. We love to see the academic progress and positive relationships that being at school every day brings to all our tamariki.

Mathswell Team Last Wednesday night our Mathswell Team, Ashleigh, Aya, Dominic, Ashley, Madison, Caitlin, Luke and Thomas worked hard at Karori West Normal School working out mathematical problems and answering quick fire maths knowledge questions. They did themselves proud with their achievements and had a really challenging but fun night.
