September Program

TVQG is proud to welcome Allison Aller as our guest speaker in September.

Allison has been stitching, sewing, knitting, and writing since she was a child....and that child is alive and well in the joyful work she creates today in the field of crazy quilting and now, stained glass quilting too.

Her work has appeared in Quilters Newsletter Magazine, American Quilter, the $100,000 Quilt Challenge, Needlepoint Now, and the Way to Women’s Wellness Art Bra Calendars (cover, 2007) and as a "guest artist" in several books including her own Allie Aller's Crazy Quilting, C & T Publishing, 2011 Quilts...A Little Bit Crazy, co-authored with fellow crazy quilter Valerie Bothell that was published in May 2014.

Allison is an instructor for www.Craftsy.com and teaches "Crazy Quilting" online for them.

Hurricane Donation When we hear of disaster events such the flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey, our first thought may be to send quilts their way. However because it is so early into the relief efforts, at this time, TVQG will instead make a cash donation to The American Red Cross. Eleanor Heikkinen will have a basket available at the Fat Quarter table at our September Meeting to collect cash donations from our guild members. This money will be added to the donation from the guild.

A New UFO Contest A new UFO contest will begin as of TVQG’s the October 2017 meeting and will conclude at the October 2018 meeting. The cost to participate in this challenge is $5. An entry form for the UFO Contest is included at the end of this newsletter. If you decide to participate please complete the form and bring it with you to the October meeting or you can mail it to LoisMarie Mayer, 17059 SW Seeley Lane, Sherwood 97140.

HST Challenge Our Half Square Triangle (HST) Challenge is currently under way. Members accepting this challenge may create a quilt using any HST design or layout they choose.

Finished Challenge Quilts will be presented in Feb 2018 and prizes will be awarded to three participants.

Charity News and Updates Charity Quilter’s Sew Day

There will NOT be a charity sew on Labor Day, Sept 4th, because the Sherwood Senior Center will be closed. However, we will be getting together at noon on the 4th to have lunch at Mazatlan, (by Rose’s Deli), in Sherwood. Everyone is welcome to join us. We want to remind everyone that our Charity Sew Days benefits all different agencies, just not the Good Neighbor Center. We have lots of fabric, batting, and support available to assist you with your favorite charity quilting projects. Here’s a thought….maybe we can have a different focus charity each month. The idea is to keep those kids warm and loved. If we don't see you the 4th, hoping you are having a wonderful day. Betty and Vergie

Good Neighbor Center The Good Neighbor Center is in need of food, personal grooming supplies, and cleaning products. If you have any of these items on hand to donate, please bring them to the next General Meeting. Our Charity Quilters team will deliver your donations to the Good Neighbor Center for you.

Days for Girls TVQG has adopted Days for girls as an ongoing charity to support. The Days for Girls organization provides lasting hygiene solutions, health education, and income-generation opportunity to girls in Sub-Saharan Africa, India, and the rural areas of Brazil.

Monthly DFG Sew Days Days for Girls hosts monthly sew days. If you are interested in attending one of their sew days please contact the DFG Portland Oregon Chapter at [email protected] or call 503-550-0516.

Free Serger Although not required, having serger can be very useful in making the Days for Girls kits. If you are in need of a serger, please contact Shirley Schultz at 503-625-9810. She has

one that she is giving away. She says “It is almost never used. It is free”.

Quilts of Valor The next Quilts of Valor Meeting will be held in October at Ace Sew and Vac in Newberg. Date, time will be announced as soon as this information is available. All members are welcome to attend, so please feel free to join us.

CARES Northwest Shirley Schultz would like to let our quilters know that CARES NW is an organization that helps children who are abused or neglected by providing them with a quilt. If you have a quilt or quilts you would like to donate to this cause, please bring them to the next meeting or call Shirley at 503-625-9810

The Child Abuse Response and Evaluation Services (CARES) Northwest is a collaborative, community-based medical program. Their mission is to stop child abuse and neglect through multidisciplinary prevention, medical evaluation, and ongoing treatment in partnership with our community. If you are interested in additional information about this organization please visit their website at http://www.caresnw.org/.

Winter Bazaar Annually, TVQG members participate in the King City Winter Bazaar by selling handcrafted items fashioned by our guild members.

Our Winter Bazaar Chairperson, Cindy Calderwood reports she is actively working on coordinating all aspects of this event, which takes place in November. Cindy will provide additional details on this fundraising project during the Business Meeting portion of upcoming General Meetings.

All members are encouraged to donate their handcrafted items as well as volunteer to spend an hour or so manning the sales tables during this two-day event. So when you see that signup sheet being passed around at an upcoming meeting, please help by volunteering

to assist with this event. REMINDER: This is TVQG’s only fundraising event this year. Hopefully, your donation items are underway.

Workshop on HST’s On September 23rd, a workshop featuring a well-known instructor will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room of the King City Clubhouse. Attendees of this five-hour class will learn a method for quickly cutting and assembling half

square triangles. The fee to attend this workshop is only $20. I guarantee you will get much more than your money’s worth if you choose to attend. For additional details about this workshop or are interested in attending please contact LoisMarie Mayer at [email protected].

Fall Sit and Sew Day Save the date! TVQG’s next Sit and Sew Day will take place on October 7th at King City Clubhouse Banquet Room. More details to follow as we get closer to this event.

Row By Row Results Members and guests attending the August Meeting were treated to a display of quilts or quilt tops resulting from our Row by Row Challenge which was held earlier this year. Please turn to Page 8 of this newsletter to see photos of some of these quilts.

Marketing Update Carol Springer addressed the group at the August meeting suggesting that TVQG would possibly benefit from having a Publicity or Marketing Committee. She

reached out to the group asking anyone interested in assisting in forming a new committee specifically geared to the promotion of our guild please contact a TVQG Officer. First, let’s give a big thank you to the person that stepped up to assist, but this effort really needs more than one person.

Here’s an idea…What if each and every guild member participated by handing out a flyer to quilt shops, at quilt-related events they are attending, or by posting (with permission of course) our information to bulletin boards within our local community? A supply of updated flyers has been completed and will available at the sign-in table at upcoming monthly meetings. If you would like to have a copy of the flyer in a digital format that you could print from your own PC or send via email, just reach out to Carol at [email protected] or give her a call at 503-598-3505.

Special Request Thanks One of our members, Vicki Lee, asked TVQG for quilt blocks to go into the making of a quilt for Shirley Reynolds granddaughter, Angela. Shirley’s granddaughter was involved in a horrific accident and is making a very difficult recovery. In response to Vicki’s request, many of our members made bright pink quilt blocks and gave them to her in August. So here’s a big thank you to everyone that assisted in this effort. Please keep Angela in your thoughts and prayers, as it is our sincere hope she makes a full recovery.

Maria Cannon Article Maria Cannon of HobbyJr.org, notes about herself; Quilting is my favorite pastime, but it’s much more than that, too. As someone who has dealt with depression and anxiety, I’ve also found that having a hobby, like quilting, can be the perfect prescription for boosting mental health, not to mention that it challenges the brain. Maria has written the following article on how hobbies can assist our well being, and we're proud to share it with our members.

Hobbies and Mental Health: How Being Creative Can Boost Your Mood

Having a hobby is a great way to relax and enjoy yourself after a long day at work, but did you

know it also provides mental health benefits? Being able to express yourself in a way that is

healthy and enjoyable can reduce stress and anxiety and can even help with depression,

especially if it’s a creative endeavor.

If you have a hobby such as playing an instrument or singing, dancing, making art, cooking,

sewing, woodworking, or working on cars, there are multiple benefits to improve your mental

state and keep you on a positive track. For some, there’s even the added benefit of helping get

through a period of recovery after battling substance abuse.

Read on for some of the best ways having a hobby can help you reduce brain drain and feel

better about yourself.

It boosts your self-esteem

Finding something you enjoy doing that you’re also good at is a great way to boost your self-esteem and general outlook on life. Feeling good about yourself is important when you’re

dealing with stress or depression, so find the thing you love doing and practice, practice,

practice. Make art even if you’re not in love with it; dig deep and find the passion for a project

you know you have in you. Don’t be hard on yourself if it takes a while to perfect; everything

worthwhile does.

It helps you stay social

Many hobbies can be done alone or in a group, which is a great way to stay social and interact

with others while doing something you enjoy. Whatever it is you like to do--painting, acting,

sewing, reading--find a way to do it with other like-minded people. This can help you in the

battle against depression and other mood disorders and will allow you to find support when you

need it. If there isn’t a group or club that already exists in your area, start one! Ask a few

friends to join a sewing circle, or lead a small class and teach those who are interested how to

paint a particular scene. This is an especially wonderful way to stay engaged in a healthy way

after battling substance abuse, and being creative will act as a sort of therapy to help you get

through this difficult time. Read here to find out more about art therapy and how it can help

with addiction.

Hobbies give you a sense of purpose

All too often, many of us find ourselves on the couch after work, binge-watching our favorite

shows and doing nothing productive. When you’re tired and it’s been a long day, there’s

nothing wrong with that, but having a hobby will help structure your time and give you a sense

of accomplishment, especially if it involves something tangible at the end.

They provide a way to bond

Many hobbies can be done with others, which allows you to share them with loved ones. If you

have trouble getting close to people or have had issues in the past with friends and relatives due

to substance abuse, now is the time to get close again. Sharing your hobby is a great way to

show them a different side of yourself and bond with them over a common interest.

Having a hobby is also a way to show the world what you can do. Being talented in a particular

area or being knowledgeable on a variety of topics makes you more interesting and draws

people into your orbit, allowing you to make new friends and feel accomplished.
