Why the Moose? Why was this particular animal chosen to represent a humanitarian fraternal order? The answer is fairly straightforward: The Moose is a large, powerful animal, but one which is a protector not a predator. It is perhaps said best like this: "He takes only what he needs, nothing more ... yet for his great size and strength he lives in peace with other creatures. The moose uses his size and power not to dominate but to protect, not to spoil but to preserve. He is a fierce protector, a loyal companion, and a generous provider who brings comfort and security to those within his defending circle." It is these characteristics of the moose in the wild – the protective instinct for its young, and for the old and infirm in its herd – that the human members of the Moose fraternity have, for decades, modeled, in the establishment and operation of Mooseheart, the organization's commu- nity and school for children and teens in need; and Moose- haven, the retirement community for Moose men and women; as well as in service to its communities. http://www.mooseintl.org/public/Area/LOOM.asp http://www.mooseintl.org/public/Area/WOTM.asp The BACK SIDE Paradise Moose Newsletter Issue # 10 of 12 Published monthly Subscription is a benefit of membership Paradise Moose Lodge #2227 5275 Skyway in Paradise, CA PO Box 1176 Paradise, CA 95967 (530) 877-9391 Website: http://lodge2227.moosepages.org/ October 2013 October 2013

Don’t Forget To Use Your S.H.A.R.E.S. card! Our Lodge gets a 3% donation of total spent every quarter!

“HELP WANTED”

The Lodge desperately needs: BARTENDERS and FOOD PREPARERS.

This will greatly increase the possibility of the Lodge meeting its financial obligations each month.

COURT ORDERED WORK PROGRAM All Court ordered people are to be referred to Tom Markle for screening and approval. We recently had one person working for us that I did not know about. When we are responsible to a Judge and the Court system we have to be careful with how we run this program. Thanks. Tom Markle

Fellow Members, August and September have been busy times for all with a lot going on. As you know, August was the first month of “Rescue 911”. I’m extremely pleased with the results so far. Our supporters donated over $5000 in the first month. Some of the supporters paid for the full 24 months and some are paying the $11 monthly. In any event, all is appreciated and I hope we will see many more of our members step up and join us in supporting this excellent cause. A list of the supporters is posted in the dining area near the cash register. At our September 19th Lodge meeting, the membership voted to use some of the funds to purchase a badly needed leaf blower for yard clean up. Thank you Rescue 911!! On September 9th – 12th, we closed the kitchen for clean up. Seven of us showed up to help and everyone worked hard for the four days. Thanks to Kim Wilson, Debby Jackson, Jim Hoenig, Harold, Franci and Rae Jean for their help. Special thanks to Jim Hoenig for donating some new shelving for the kitchen. Also, thanks to the generosity of W.O.T.M., we were able to hire someone to steam clean the kitchen exhaust system. We are all looking forward to the BBQ and anniversary celebration on October 5th. Be sure to join us for fun and games. Thanks to all for displaying your membership cards when arriving in the social quarters or dining area. It’s nice not to have to ask. My best wishes to all.

Fraternally, In Loyal Friendship, Bill Goodwin, Governor

Administrator’s Message:

Thanks to all our Lodge and Chapter volunteers who keep our Lodge running smoothly. Our kitchen workers, bartenders, outside and inside cleanup crews and those who keep our equipment in repair. You may never see those working when no one is around like Neil Hopler who keeps our yard equipment in running or-der or Mark Salyer who recently rekeyed all the locks in our building but they are appreciated, so when you see any of our workers say THANK YOU.

Welcome to our newest member, Robert Horn sponsored by Arvel Rogers.

Our Women of the Moose are having a Tea and Holiday Craft Sale on October 19 at 11:00AM for everyone to help welcome new members. See the poster in this newsletter. Monday night football and games and meals in are in full swing thanks to our volunteers. Don’t miss the Thursday Burger nights, Friday dinners and Sunday breakfasts. Participation in these and other special events goes a long way in keeping our Lodge successful.

We will be celebrating our Lodge’s 44th Anniversary on October 5 with a fabu-lous BBQ. Plan to attend.

Thanks to all those members who have already replied and donated to our Rescue 911 Fund. We are over $6,000 in donations. This will help to pay down our Moose International bill and any major repairs that the members vote on.

There was a lot of good information received at the recent CNMA State Conven-tion. We will be sharing this at our meetings.

If you are moving or are going to be traveling, please send a note or call us so we can keep our mailing list up to date. We have to pay first class postage to get back those newsletters with incorrect addresses for those that do not let us know they are moving. The post office DOES NOT forward third class mail.

The new Membership campaign GO THE DISTANCE celebrates the 125th Anni-versary of the Moose and the 100th Anniversary of Mooseheart, the Women of the Moose and the Legion of the Moose. During the year long program May 1, 2013 to April 30, 2014, the application fee is waived when you sponsor a new member into the Lodge, Chapter or Legion of the Moose. Have your friend turn in the application along with the first year’s dues, $60.00 Lodge, $25.00 Chapter or $20.00 Legion. We will invite them to our new member orientation program and acquaint them with our Lodge and the Moose Fraternity.

The State Association also has a program to give a gas card for signing up new or former members. See the poster in this newsletter.

Pick up a Moose Benefits brochure the next time you are in the Lodge or see it on the Moose International website www.mooseintl.org

The meeting was held on Friday September 13, and we were pleased to announce there are still 7 rigs heading to Plymouth on Sunday the 15. Many new activities are planned, the Kennedy Mine Tour, Preston Castle Tour and some dinners out.

The campout to Lake Almanor in August with Ron and Billie as wagon masters was fun for the 3 rigs that attended, plus our guests, Hans and Jan, the Perry clan, and Dave and Barbara. Lots of good meals out, so the gals did not have to cook! Just wish we could have had more attend.

Our next meeting will be on October 11, it will also be the last “cook your own steak” night. We served 65 meals in September, and the guests seemed very happy with the dinner.

The last scheduled campout of the year is Red Bluff October 13-19. There are currently 18 rigs signed up to go. Tom and Ron have some good things planned and a dinner at the moose lodge.

The annual Christmas party is planned for Wednesday December 11, and the cost is your annual dues of $15.00. Harold has gra-ciously volunteered to once again handle the prime rib dinner, many offered assistance. If there are some that were not able to be at the meeting, please call Harold and offer your help. He and Franci would appreciate it.

IF YOU ARE MOVING or are going on an extended trip. Please let us know

IN ADVANCE. . . The Post Office does NOT

forward third class mail. Let us know when you return so you can be put back on the mailing list. When traveling you can view our newslet-

ter on the State Association website www.ca-nvmoose.org
