Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Our 25th Annual Parish Carnival will be held September 13-17! Will you help us at one of our booths, donate some food for our food booth, or help with set up or clean up this year? Please sign up this weekend in the vestibule of Conlon Hall so that we can prepare for these big and busy days of necessary fund-raising for our parish. See page six for more information.

You may have experienced some difficulties entering the lower church these last few weeks. We are having the stair treds removed and replaced with an automatic heating system to melt the snow and ice in bad weather. While we had elements of this feature in the past, it demanded actually turning on the switches before a storm and remembering to turn them off after all the ice was melted. Over time, the coils have worn out, and the new system includes sensors to automatically detect when they need to be on, saving electricity while always being ready in snow events, which often happen over weekends when our maintenance crew is not on duty. Trying to shovel out these lower stairwells is extremely difficult, even with the help of our Boy Scout Troop 139. This project will cost a little over $20,000.00 which we will be able to cover with our Parish Improvement Fund to which parishioners have donated in particular over past years and which also will now be replenished by funds collected in the We Are Living Stones Capital Campaign. You may still make pledges to this Campaign or one-time gifts. Contact Deacon Jim at the rectory for more information.

Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

Many people have been impressed and attracted by the humility of Pope Francis. He lives in two rooms of a hotel, paid his own housing bill the day after his election, made a sandwich to feed his Swiss Guard, invites the poor to eat with him, washes prisoners’ feet, installs bathrooms and showers for homeless people, and brings them in to tour the Sistine Chapel. He also calls the Mafia, the Curia, and all of us to accountability. His humility is humbling and challenging. He walks his talk and the talk of Jesus: Everyone who humbles self will be exalted. Being humble is simply being truthful about one’s gifts and one’s limitations. Walking on the foot of our gifts, we thank those who affirm them and God for giving them to us along with the ability to develop them. Walking on the foot of our limitations we admit them, say, “I’m sorry” when appropriate, and seek to learn from them how we might make amends. To approach Mount Zion and the city of the living God entails walking on both feet: gratitude for our gifts and honesty about our limitations and our sins. In a world that seeks gain, notoriety, and limelight, the humility of Pope Francis is both attractive and counter-cultural. The humility of Jesus comforts and challenges us. God makes a home where we walk on both feet, the wealth of our gifts and the poverty of our weakness. God showers us with love and mercy knowing our grace and our sin. Be humble. Accept your gifts. Name your weakness. Follow the example of Pope Francis and live the way of Jesus, who humbled himself by taking on every human limitation with the exception of sin, even death.

“Jesus, though you were in the form of God, you did not deem equality with God something to be grasped, but humbled yourself and became as we are. Free me to find you within me when affirming my gifts and forgiving my sins. Help me to be humble enough to thank you by treating others in the same way. Amen.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you.” Luke 14: 13-14

We have a difficult time with the concept of giving without expecting something in return. Even when we give to charity we often want something in return—a raffle ticket, a dinner, or a chance to play golf. Yet, as Christian stewards, we need to remember that the true reward for our giving awaits us in heaven.
