Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This weekend we welcome Fr. John Anglin, OFM, who is with us to celebrate Masses and tell us once again about the work of Unbound, a lay Catholic sponsorship ministry that helps children and elderly in 19 developing countries. As many of you have discovered in past visits by Unbound, previously known as Christian Foundation for Children and Aging, a highly personalized match is made between you as a sponsor and a child, youth, or aging person overseas. With a monthly contribution, a sponsor helps, cares about, and encourages that person. To learn more, call (800) 875-6564 or visit Unbound online at www.unbound.org. I am pleased to be an Unbound sponsor. I hope you will consider being one, too!

A recent survey of our parish buildings reveals that there are many items no longer used by the parish or parish groups, as well as things which, while still used, present safety issues. We’ve designated SATURDAY, AUGUST 12th as DUMPSTER DAY!

Over the next few weeks, we ask parish groups which have any such items to notify the rectory of the item and the location. We will also begin to tag items selected to be thrown away, in the event that someone may know an item is still in use, as well as to help us identify the total.

Also, we will be looking for volunteers from parish groups and organizations who can actually help us on that Saturday to move the items to the dumpster. If you can help, please contact Deacon Jim or leave a message for him at the rectory.

Rev. Msgr. Richard J. Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

The parable of the sower and the seed reflects everyday farming practices in Palestine during Jesus’ time. The images it evokes would have been easily understood by those listening to Jesus. In the parable, the soil represents the various degrees of openness in those who heard the gospel message.

Jesus described the responses that different people make in their walk of faith toward maturity. First is the hearer of the word who doesn’t understand or fully accept it. Second are those who understand but cannot stand up to the challenge of persecution or suffering. The third group hears and accepts the word but is distracted by the world. A final group of believers hears the word, understands it, and responds positively.

When we first come to faith in Jesus, we are like babes in Christ who - over time - may achieve maturity. This progression, from infancy to maturity, does not happen through self-effort, but comes through the work of the Holy Spirit in us. “For God is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:13). With our cooperation, God will bring to completion what He has started in us for He wants a plentiful harvest.

We can cooperate with God’s grace in order to see fruit in our lives. God has promised us the Holy Spirit who will teach us all things. Christ himself through His Blood, cleanses us from our sins and dead works and makes us just before God. Through His Cross, Jesus strengthens us in time of trial and weakness. He draws us together through baptism into one Body, His Church, where we drink of the one Spirit and are sustained in word and sacrament. He gives us His very Body and Blood as food from heaven to nourish us.

Jesus himself provides for us in our walk of faith. Our response determines the yield in our lives. Let us pray that we will be open to Him so that we may yield a wonderfully bountiful harvest!

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word but then the cares of the world and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit.” Matthew 13: 22

Does the lure of riches and material goods choke God out of your life? Are you so caught up in worldly activities that you have no time for God? Stewardship is a lifestyle to be lived every day. It affects all the decisions we make. What we receive at Mass every Sunday should be shared with others all the other days of the week.

Madonna Chapel & Mausoleum 2070 Hoefley’s Lane, Fort Lee, NJ, 07024

Madonna Cemetery has completed the construction of an addition to our existing Mausoleum. The first community Mausolem built in the Archdiocese of Newark has served the needs of our local community for over forty years. The construction of an addition was necessary if we hoped to continue in this mission

If you wish to have more information, please take flyer or brochure available at the exits of the church. Please fill out the form and send it to us or contact Madonna Cemetery: 1-866-392-1951. Invitation to Validate a Civil Marriage If you were married civilly, that is not in the Catholic Church before a priest or deacon, it might not be a valid marriage in the eyes of the Church. Some couples believe that a marriage before a Justice of the Peace or a non-Catholic minister is valid. For a marriage to be valid in the Catholic Church, the marriage must be in a Catholic Church or Chapel and officiated by an authorized Catholic priest or deacon along with 2 witnesses. (There are limited interfaith exceptions with proper permission.)

Your are invited to speak with one of our priests if there are any questions or if indeed you wish to validate your marriage. The process can be very simple and your marriage will then be blessed by the Church.

St. John’s Respect Life Ministry Spiritual Adoption Program It’s not too late to join us. You are invited to participate with us in this prayer campaign lasting for 9 months (December 8, 2016 until September 8, 2017). You name and pray every day for one baby who is in danger of abortion. Prayer cards are available at the exits of the church. Call Mary, 201-385-8308, for information.

Seventh Month Developing Baby ~ You’re in the home stretch with your spiritually adopted baby. He/she is completely formed, and has been since 8 weeks. All your baby is doing now is gaining weight–making his mother uncomfortable with his size. But she’s not worried now. In a short time, her baby will be born. She has planned to bring her baby home or to a place her baby for adoption. Either way, she knows she can receive the assistance she needs from the Catholic Church and from the crisis pregnancy centers. Your baby’s mother appreciates the prayers you have said for her and her baby throughout the pregnancy. It hasn’t been easy, but your prayers have given her grace to seek the help she needs.

Please return Baby Bottles ~ We will continue to accept your Baby Bottles over the next several weeks. Please bring to the church and give to the priest after any weekend or weekday Mass or drop off at the Rectory during business hours (9:00am - 8:00pm). Thank you for your support.

PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE THEM IN THE CHURCH. Donations collected will be shared among three local crisis pregnancy centers. Watch bulletin for up-dates.

Testing for Catholic High School Entrance This Fall, 8th grade students in Catholic elementary schools and public school students seeking admision to an archdiocesan Catholic high school will take a new testing vehicle under the Cooperative Admissions Examination Program (COOP) to assist school staff in evaluating freshmen candidates. The High School Placement Test (HSPT) produced by Scholastic Testing Services, Inc., replaces a previous test by CTB McGraw-Hill that they are not expected to keep offering. The new version of the COOP exam is a comprehensive high school admissions guide that has been used extensively through the nation for over 50 years. The test, which is updated each year, provides each participating school with score reports highlighting details of performance of individual students. The COOP exam measures scholastic aptitude in verbal and non-verbal abilities and achievement in reading, language arts and mathematics. However, it is only one criterion for admission to participating Catholic high schools. When used in conjunction with effort and performance ratings from the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades, as well as previous standardized test results, secondary schools are able to gauge the readiness of applicants seeking admission to college preparatory educational programs. Most high schools also consider other factors such as attendance and disciplinary records, and some may choose to consider essays and interviews. Go to http://njcoopexam.org for more information!
