Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Though school is out for the summer, the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry of the Archdiocese continues to provide young men and women the opportunity to encounter their faith while growing in fellowship with one another. Every year, the Archdiocese of Newark provides over $800,000 to provide funding to engage our youth in their faith.

Recently, the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry has seen a burst in participation and it is anticipated that within the next year, over 50,000 people will participate in events at the Archdiocesan Retreat Center or coordinated through the Office.

The CYO provides people with the opportunity to attend retreats, increase their knowledge of the Catholic Faith, and participate in a wide variety of sports and recreation programs in both summer and year-round programs. Our parish brings our Confirmation candidates each year there for a weekend retreat.

Whether it is through the CYO Summer Camp, Archiocesan-wide training sessions and programs with the Office, or through retreats held at the Center, your generosity towards the Sharing God’s Blessings Annual Appeal goes directly to impact the lives of thousands of our Catholic youth!

These programs would not thrive without YOUR generosity. The Annual Appeal helps to offset the cost of many of these programs and ministries, which are essential to the future of our Faith, and are essential for bringing our youth into a deep relationship with Our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Our latest total of pledges for our Archdiocesan Sharing God’s Blessings Annual Appeal is currently $75,564, which is 81.2% of our goal of $92,953.00. If you have not done so already, we invite you to make a gift to this year’s Annual Appeal by picking up a pledge form at the doors of the church or visiting online at www.rcan.org/sharing or visit on Facebook at ‘Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark’.

Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

Do you give lip service or life service to following Jesus and living the kingdom of God? That is, do your actions confirm your words? Saying that “We ate and drank in your company” is not enough. We strive to enter the narrow gate by doing our best to live the values of God’s kingdom that Jesus showed us. Living the way of the kingdom that Jesus’ words and deeds proclaimed takes discipline. Many talk about going to the gym, taking time to practice their craft, eating in a more healthy manner, or making more time for prayer. These practices have positive effects in our lives. At other times they seem like too much, or we bite off more than we can chew rather than the amount that will help us make progress in the end. The same is true of the disciplines of faith.

Scripture tells us that God invites people from all nations, faiths, and ways of life to enter the kingdom. Practices like prayer, fasting, almsgiving, living the commandments and turning to God in need are counted among the disciplines of faith. They help us tell the good news of Jesus Christ so that others can glorify God and live on God’s holy mountain. We cannot earn a place at the heavenly banquet, because faith is a gift God offers to all. We take on these faith disciplines in gratitude for the gift. Then when people see, hear, or encounter us, they see, hear, and encounter Jesus. That’s the difference between life service and lip service. What discipline can I take on today so that my life and lips proclaim, “I follow Jesus Christ, the way, the truth, and the life”? Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Let God help you reinforce success rather than failure.

“Jesus, I desire to eat and drink in your company for all eternity. Show me the way to live so that, nourished by you, I can feed others with your all-inclusive and unconditional love. Amen.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“For behold, some are last who will be first and some are first who will be last.” Luke 13: 30

Our standards in our society are so different from God’s standards. We often rate or rank people by what they have, how powerful they are, or how successful they are. Jesus reminds us that God will not judge us by the same earthly standards.
