Parish Mission Statement The Catholic community of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, united in the love of God, comes together to worship the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, to provide for the spiritual growth of each member, to minister to one another’s needs, to be servants and neighbors to all, to strengthen and share faith, to experience the richness of Jesus Christ. The Catholic community of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, aware of its call to be the good news, accomplishes its mission through worship, education, service and personal example.

May God Bless and keep safe in his care our Service Men and Women whose lives are in danger every day. They heroically serve to defend and maintain freedom around the world as well as at home. Our prayer for them reflects our great admiration and love for them. May God bless them, watch over them, and protect them always.

Prayer for Vocations “Lord of the harvest, BLESS young people with the gift of courage to respond to your call. Open their hearts to great ideals, to great things. INSPIRE all of your disciples to mutual love and giving – for vocations blossom in the good soil of faithful people, INSTILL those in religious life, parish ministries, and families with the confidence and grace to invite others to embrace the bold and noble path of a life consecrated to you. UNITE us to Jesus through prayer and sacrament, so that we may cooperate with you in building your reign of mercy and truth, of justice and peace. Amen.” (Pope Francis)

Anna Asks…Are Jacob and Israel the same person? Yes. Jacob first appears in the Book of Genesis, the son of Isaac and Rebecca, the grandson of Abraham. He was the second-born of Isaac's children, the elder being his fraternal twin brother Esau. However, by deceiving Isaac when he was old and blind, Jacob was able to usurp the blessing that belonged to Esau as the firstborn son and become the leader of their family. According to the Book of Genesis the patriarch Jacob was given the name Israel after he wrestled with the angel (Genesis 32:28 and 35:10). The birthright of Isaac’s firstborn was seized by Jacob unlawfully, and he admits to this when he calls himself “Jacob.” (The name Jacob, means “supplanter, deceiver”; it was given to him because, when Jacob was born as the second of a set of twins, “his hand [was] grasping [his twin’s] heel.”) The Lord does not let Jacob’s past define him. Instead, He forgives and no longer holds Jacob’s sin against him. He renames Jacob Israel. Jacob/Israel's descendants came to be known as the Israelites, eventually forming the tribes of Israel and ultimately the kingdom of Israel, whence came the name of modern-day State of Israel. When we read both names in the same scripture, as with today’s first reading, it can be confusing, however the names Jacob and Israel are used alternately throughout Scripture in reference to the same person, the second son of Isaac.

Cold and Flu Concerns As we gather together for worship, we would like to remind you of a few common sense health precautions that you can take at Mass. At the sign of peace, you may choose to simply nod or wave as a greeting. Do not be offended if someone does not shake your hand, it is probably in your best interest. At communion, the Precious Blood will continue to be offered. You may choose not to receive from the cup, but be assured that you are receiving Jesus Christ, whole and entire, body, blood, soul, and divinity when you receive either the Precious Blood or the Sacred Host. Thank you for exercising prudence and patience and please keep in your prayers those who are afflicted by the flu.

A BIG THANK YOU to all of the youth of our parish who sang or played an instrument to celebrate our Savior’s birth at the 4:00PM Christmas Eve mass. Continuing to Celebrate Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Continuing to Celebrate Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Over the past two weeks, we looked at her life before and during her conversion. This week, let’s look at her life after joining the Catholic Church. Seton’s conversion to Catholicism brought about many hardships. Hostility from her family was just the beginning of her sufferings in an anti-Catholic New York City. Seton made the Profession of Faith and received her first holy Communion in March 1805 at St. Peter’s Church on Barclay Street, the city’s oldest parish. As a victim of prejudice, Seton had trouble finding stable work to provide for her family, and she wrestled about what to do. God gave the answer when Seton was invited to Maryland by Sulpician Father William DuBourg,(the same group runs the seminary that Brendan attends today). In the Catholic-friendly state of Maryland, Seton would establish a school and start a religious order. First teaching in Baltimore for a year, Seton pronounced religious vows in 1809 in the presence America’s first bishop, John Carroll. He gave the foundress of the first religious order established in the United States the title “Mother Seton.” The Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph’s lived the Rule of St. Vincent de Paul’s Daughters of Charity with a few alterations from Carroll to provide for a mother with children to enter the new order. Establishing a free school for poor girls near Emmitsburg, Maryland, proved to be a daunting, but not impossible task for Mother Seton. Seton and her sisters opened St. Joseph’s Free School in 1810, and for this she is remembered as the mother of Catholic education in the United States. Seton’s trust in God was undying, although it was tested in her final years on the rough Maryland frontier, especially when two daughters died of tuberculosis by 1816. Persevering in the Faith to the end, Seton exhorted those near her deathbed, “Be children of the Church.” She died of tuberculosis at the age of 46 on Jan. 4, 1821. Seton’s spiritual director, Sulpician Father Simon Bruté, himself a candidate for sainthood, memorialized her saying, “O, such a mother! Such faith and love! Such a true spirit of prayer, of true humility, of true self-denial in all, of true charity to all!”

Vocation Reflection : “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.” Those words of St. John the Baptist are echoed at every mass as the priest elevates the body and blood of Christ. God’s mercy and love are shared with His Church through the sacraments. The world is starving for those gifts, but we need priests to provide them. For more information, contact the vocation office @ 315-470-1468.

The Word of God & Mother Seton …“While I live, while I have my being, in time and eternity, let me sing praises to my God.”—St. Elizabeth Ann Seton The Lord tells Isaiah that it is not enough for him to just be his servant, but rather, he must also be a light to the nations (Isa 49:6). It is not enough for him to simply abide by the law of the Lord on his own. He must do that in a way that truly leads others to life in-and-with God. This same call remains true for each of us today. What does it look like for us to live our lives as ‘lights’ to the nations? We can look to Mother Seton: a life full of loss and grief, but also of hope and joy; a heart never lacking in gratitude. May we strive this week for our hearts, like hers, to be ready at any moment to say: “let me sing praises to my God.”

A Prayer Chain is in place at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. Serving on the Prayer Chain is a way for good people to serve God and to bring blessings to others who will be grateful for the prayers of Prayer Chain Members. If prayers for self or for others are needed and desired, please call the Parish Office at 652-4300 and your prayer requests will be forwarded to Angie Peterson.
