The Hollywood veteran made his name with popular films such as "Trading Places," starring Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd, and Bette Midler' s "The Rose." In later years, his interests and energies turned to political activism. Russo joined the Libertarian Party after losing the Nevada GOP gubernatorial primary to Kenny Guinn in 1998. Russo picked up 26 percent of the vote in a four-way race and planned to run an independent campaign in 2002, but was forced to pull out to concentrate on overcoming bladder cancer, which, in 2003, he said he had done. Russo came back in 2003, launching a bid for the presidency, first as an independent and later as a Libertarian. "I want to do what Ross Perot did, what Jesse Ventura did, and I want to come out and speak the truth – be plain-spoken, tell it like it is, and bring America back to its Constitution and Bill of Rights," Russo said in 2003. Both parties lie to us, he asserted, and neither follows the Constitution. "I'm frustrated by that," said Russo, "and want to bring freedom back to America." The Brooklyn native was awarded a Tony, an Emmy, a Grammy and had nominations for six Academy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards. He also was the first Hollywood movie producer to garner a $1 million fee. Additionally, he helped Bette Midler rise to stardom as her manager and created a politically oriented television program, "Aaron Russo's Mad As Hell." "I believe in individual freedom," he said. "I don't believe in a big, monolithic state." Whether the leader ship is Democra tic or Republican, Russo contended, "you have $44 trillion in unfunded liabilities, a Federal Reserve that is broken, a situation in Iraq which I think is disgusting, and you have both partie s stoppin g people from bearing arms. Where is that in the Constitution?" "I believe there are millions and millions of unhear d voices in Americ a who woul d come out and vote for someone they believed in," he said. Although he was a strong critic of President Bush and the war in Iraq and remained committed to libertarian policies, Rus so was one of the fir st to endorse Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul for the 2008 election. But Russo was a filmmaker and wasn't dependent on election cycles to get his message of individual liberty across. In 2006, Russo released a documentary dealing with the Federal Reserve system, income tax and government power – "America: From Freedom to Fascism." The film pegs 1913 as the year the United States lost its freedom. That was the year the Federal Reserve banking system was put into place and a federal income tax was instituted. "In 1913, America was a free country," states capital white letters on a black backgroun d at the start of the film's online trailer . "Then a band of powerful bankers achieve d their fathers' and great grandfathers' goal. America has never been the same. Soon the world will not be the same." States one review of the film posted on its website: "Aaron Russo has earned his place in the prefer red section of heave n with this film, and the nation owes him a large debt of gratitude for having produced it. Longtime movie producer and 2004 Libertarian presidential candidate Aaron Russo is dat age 64, having succumbed to cancer yesterday.

The Hollywood veteran made his name with popular films such as "Trading Places," starEddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd, and Bette Midler's "The Rose." In later years, his interand energies turned to political activism.

Russo joined the Libertarian Party after losing the Nevada GOP gubernatorial primarKenny Guinn in 1998. Russo picked up 26 percent of the vote in a four-way race planned to run an independent campaign in 2002, but was forced to pull out to concent

"I want to do what Ross Perot did, what Jesse Ventura did, and I want to come out speak the truth – be plain-spoken, tell it like it is, and bring America back to its Constituand Bill of Rights," Russo said in 2003.

Both parties lie to us, he asserted, and neither follows the Constitution.

"I'm frustrated by that," said Russo, "and want to bring freedom back to America."

The Brooklyn native was awarded a Tony, an Emmy, a Grammy and had nominations foAcademy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards. He also was the first Hollywood mproducer to garner a $1 million fee. One last thing. The 2008 LP National Convention will be in DenColorado – that’s within driving distance, making it more likelyyou to be able to attend. I would like to ask each of you to at lthink about attending as a delegate to represent our State. If this even the slightest possibility you might be able to attend, plelet me or you CenCom representative know about it.

LP Platform Undergoes Major Change

As I wrote above, there were major changes to the LP NatioPlatform passed at the July 2006 National Convention. Mainleliminated the majority of the planks. I envision a flurry of effbetween now and the next LP Convention in May 2008 to reinstias many of the planks as possible.

Let’s take a look at yet another of the remaining planks frour LP National Platform.

II. 3 – Public Services

The Issue – Federal, state and local governments have creainefficient service monopolies throughout the economy. FromUS Postal Service to municipal garbage collection and water wogovernment is forcing citizens to use monopoly services. These

services that the private sector is already capable of providing manner that gives the public better service at a competitive price

Principle – A free and competitive market allocates resourcethe most efficient manner.

Consumers of services should not have their choices arbitrlimited by law.

Solution – Libertarian policies will seek to divest government ofunctions that can be provided by non-governmental organizator private individuals.

Transitional Action – All rate regulation in utilities should transto free market pricing.

End the Postal Service's monopoly and allow for the competition in all aspects of mail delivery.

State and local monopoly services should be opened to free-macompetition.

Local and state governments can auction assets such as usystems and landfills to private industry, thereby immediareducing the tax burden on their citizens.

Yes, Your Newsletter Is Late – It’s My Fault!

Yes, this newsletter is late, but don’t blame your editor, Mike. It’smy fault, not his. My apology for the lateness of the September newsletter.

Just when I had my input about ready to send in, the flash drive onwhich I had that and all my other files dating back for years got

“fried” and I lost a slew of files.

Fortunately, I had a backup of my files, but unfortunately, it wasabout a month old and did not have a copy of the September letter n it, so I have had to recreate the letter from scratch. Again, myapology for the lateness.

CORRECTION

n the June 2007 edition of  NML, on page 5, Notes from theEditor , under  Housecleaning , it incorrectly stated, “….JayVandersloot has expressed an intention to replace those countychairs or contacts who aren't doing anything with people who will beactive….”

This was apparently based on a conversation I had with someone ata meeting. The intent of my statement at that meeting was to

convey that I would like to find members in counties where therewere no organized affiliates to work on trying to organize affiliatesthere. This had been based on a recently expressed intent by oneof our members to do just that.

There was no intent to denigrate, belittle, criticize, or disparage theefforts of anyone. As anyone who has attended any of the meetings have chaired knows, I always make it a point to praise everyone’s

efforts, whatever they may be, and I continue to appreciate what isbeing done.

No matter how “small” you may think your efforts are, they all count. We each have different talents. Some are good at collectingpetition signatures. Others have a knack for talking with peopleabout liberty. Still others are talented at the “behind the scenes” administrative functions. Yet others are able to help through

financial donations to enable others to make things happen. It’s allimportant! Do what you’re able to do, whatever that may be.

n any month of the NML you can look at the Field Reports section, normally on page two, and see some of the things our newsletter editor is aware of members doing. But, we know that others arealso doing things.

Just recently Ed Nagel, whom most of you know for his extensivenvolvement in the home schooling effort, perceived a need for morenvolvement in organizing an affiliate in his county. He’s currentlyworking on that.

Brenda Gountis has just recently expressed an interest inorganizing an “East Mountains Moms Group,”  with a specialnterest in home schooling. She has since heard about a homeschooling group in the area that she is trying to contact. If you liven the East Mountains area, and are interested in becomingnvolved, you can contact her at 505-286-4267, or email her [email protected].

We’re sure there are other efforts that we are not aware of, and Iwould encourage you to email me at my new email address,[email protected], and tell us about what you or someone you know of is doing, so we can recognize those efforts inthe NML, or possibly even the LP News. Come on, Brag onyourselves!

Filed with Massachusetts Attorney General:Our Ballot Initiative to END the Income Tax

Signed and submitted. On July 31, 2007, we legally filed our Ballotnitiative to END the Massachusetts Income Tax.

This is the first step in the path to putting our initiative on the ballotfor the second time.

Next week, we'll send you an exciting, fact-filled briefing on why youand we may be on the verge of Ending the Income Tax inMassachusetts.

Next week, you'll see why small government is possible.

Boston Globe Spotlights Our END the Income Tax Ballot Initiative

The Boston Globe is taking us seriously. Here's the top half of their coverage of our Ballot Initiative to End the Income Tax inMassachusetts:

Activists again propose vote to end income taxBy Martin Finucane, Globe Staff – August 2, 2007

A proposal to abolish the state income tax received a surprisingamount of support in the 2002 elections. Now, activists are revivingt, hoping to place it on next year's ballot. The activists filed their proposed ballot question yesterday with the attorney general's

office."I think our surprising and extraordinary vote in 2002 demonstratedthat anything is possible, and people are going to take this muchmore seriously this time around," said Carla Howell, who is leadingthe campaign to abolish the tax.

The proposal received 45 percent of the vote in 2002, despitecritics' warnings that it would plunge state government into chaos.

Michael Widmer, president of the Massachusetts TaxpayersFoundation, a business-backed budget watchdog group, said theproposal is "absolutely unreasonable" and would dry up statefunding for education and healthcare.

"The voters would rue the day. . . . Essentially, she's trying to repealthe 20th century," Widmer said. Income taxes account for $10 or

$11 billion of the state's budget of about $27 billion, he said.

"Progressives" or "Regressives"?http://www.ncc-1776.org/tle2007/tle431-20070819-02.html

by L. Neil Smith [ [email protected] ]From The Libertarian Enterprise [ www.ncc-1776.org ]

Pursuing a fairly intriguing anti-war link the other morning, Iunexpectedly found myself looking at a website owned andoperated by "progressives".

A "progressive", you'll recall, is a liberal who understands that heand his ilk have brought just about all the shame and disreputethat's possible to that once fine, respectable old term. Abysmallychagrined at what it once represented – a preference for individual

iberty in all things – they are embarrassed to be associated with itsmyriad of gross and humiliating shortcomings in public. These arethe people who don't seem to have noticed a damn thing that'shappened the past 30 years – including the massive discreditationand collapse of socialism – and have actually convinced themselves(I saw this on another "progressive" site) – that capitalism has beena failure.

n any case, rather than fight – as we must go on doing to maintainthe integrity of the expression "libertarian" against a menagerie of cretins, crooks, and crazies desperate to alter its meaning – in thewords of the old cigarette commercial, they've switched.

For the most part these retreaded lefties are in the anguishedmiddle, just now, of pondering their slight and vanishing Presidentialoptions for 2008, given the unfortunate fact that Hillary Clinton is abarefaced chicken-hawk (like her old man Willy the Mad Bomber),and Barack Obama, once the Great Black Hope, has turned out tobe every bit as deranged as George Bush and wants to drop the BigOne now – on Pakistan.

Or was it Australia?

forget.

But one of the major things that the soft-shelled collectivists on thissite were whimpering about didn't have anything to do with theBush-Clinton-Bush War on Everything. It was about certainconsequences in the market they apparently don't know theybrought upon themselves. It seems, among their many other complaints, that all the "mainstream" media in this country (or possibly it was the world, it was unclear) are owned by a tinyhandful (five, I believe they said) of gigantic corporations.

Now I concede that this may very well be true, and I agree that it isprobably not a good thing. When the satellite and cable explosionbegan occurring in the early 1980s, and there were morendependent stations with national uplinks than you could shake astick at, it started to look like we might have a free country againsomeday. But the corporate leviathans, who are no friends of freedom, tightened their grasp, and there is less and less to watchor listen to than there was before. We have to ask ourselves who'sto blame for this situation.

To begin with, you must understand clearly that all taxation isregressive. It's all about proportion. Just as, say, a nickel sales taxon hamburger bites deeper into the economic flesh of the poor thannto the relative adipose of the rich, so smaller companies arealways hit harder by taxes than big companies with a better-paddedbottom line.

Moreover (and this is a very important key to understanding whathappened and why) big companies can afford bigger, slicker legaland accounting departments to save the corporation tax money or get them out of tax trouble if necessary. If government decides to goafter a big corporation, its officers are far likelier to get their backsides forcibly removed and handed to them in court. (Or saidofficers may just be offered lucrative salaries to leave governmentand join the corporation.) Simply from an institutional standpoint, then, it's easier and safer to go after Mom and Pop, who are likely tobe stuck with their brother-in-law accountant and the lawyer whodrew up their wills.

Possibly even more important, all regulation is regressive, tocosts a small company a much greater fraction of its assetcomply with government's dictates – most of them unconstitutionthan it does a big corporation with its teeming hordes of ofdrones.

I saw a dramatic display once of a quarter's worth of paperwork the government required of the 3M corporation. The cardbboxes it filled formed a sort of meandering garden wall abouthigh and fifty or sixty feet long. It was truly horrific, fundamentally wrong.

But my point here is that 3M could afford the resources (abothird of their overhead, they estimated) to deal with this kind degree of asininity, whereas similar requirements, loaded ontoalready breaking backs of small or even middle-sized compacould easily crush or kill them. At about the same time (the 1960s), it was noted that four out of five new businesses go bellywithin a year.

And who, we may now ask rhetorically, do we thank for that? same "progressives" today who shake their little Marxoid fistletWal-Mart and bemoan the passing of the neighborhood grostore. The same wasters who polluted the economic environmwith regulatory toxins until the smaller denizens of the market wunable to survive and the only organisms left were the dinosaugiants they love to hate.

Big corporations can hire specialists to stall, bribe, or partly saOSHA, EEOC, EPA, and the rest of the alphabet agencies that h

The process can be stretched out for yeBut the same agencies, without breaking sweat, can jail a farwho lacks the resources to defend himself adequately, and esteal his tractor because he had the audacity to fill in a rain pudin his own back yard.

Remember what I said, because the universe always provides a afterwards: regulation is every bit as regressive as taxation. Thecorporation moves on, while farmer, who now makes license plfor a living, is stripped of his rights, his property, and his life, ansoon forgotten.

Add to that certain local impediments like zoning, licensureseveral different kinds, and the apalling travesty of eminent dom  – recently enhanced by one of the most transparently co

supreme court rulings in American history – and you have a formfor making a hundred percent certain that big corporations dominate the culture, mostly with the compliments of your frieneighborhood "progressives".

There are many things that corporations are perfectly good Ruling the world is not one of them. As evidence, I submit for yapproval, George W. Bush and Richard "Dick" Che"corporation" is their middle name. As even more evidence, I suBill and Hillary Clinton, whose corporate ties are, if anything, emore dense and tangled.

I have my own fond memories of buying candy at a neighborhMom and Pop grocery store, walking home from school. (There no busing back then, and, apparently, many fewer child molestoThis is one of the few things that England does right: there's an

license" store that sells things like candy, cigarettes, and milknearly every residential street corner in London. There are "nagents" that sell newspapers and paperback books. Therewarm, friendly pub or two in every neighborhood that you can tvisitors and friends to.

Throw in a neighborhood gun and ammo shop, I'd like to see thacome back to America. So what can be done about it? The ansis only three words long, but implementing it could take many yand require something like a civil war: abolish limited liability, wis the legal means by which people who own and opecorporations evade moral and monetary responsibility for what tdo. Get rid of it, and corporations will shrivel in size and power blasted by a nova.

Another thing: return control of corporations to the stockholdersfrom whom it was rudely seized, mostly by parliamentary chicanery, starting in the 1950s. If thousands of owners know they will pay thecost when corporations screw up, they will watch their employeesvery closely.

Finally, corporate taxes—in fact, all business taxes—must be totallyand permanently rescinded. What they represent, in fact, are asecond tax on their incomes that the Productive Class arecompelled to pay whenever they puchase something or employsomebody. This—along with repealing every bit of economicregulation—would finally give small enterprises an even break, andonly those giant corporations that actually provide quality goods andservices at reasonable prices would be able to withstand theresulting Cambrian-style explosion of competition.

Don't forget ditching eminent domain—and sovereign immunity, too.

So how about it, "progressives"?

Just how progressive are you, really?

My guess is "not very". Just as most "progressives" would rather see a woman raped in an alley and strangled with her ownpantyhose than see her with a gun in her hand, they would rather punish the rich than help the poor. They would rather whip themaster than free his slaves.

Too bad for Mom and Pop.

The Simon Jester Projectwww.simonjester.org

What is the Simon Jester Project?

If you haven't read the classic SF novel, The Moon is a HaMistress, by Robert A. Heinlein, the whole Simon Jester thing be confusing you. Simon Jester was the "imaginary" creation group of Loonies fomenting rebellion. He was a little devil tormented the Lunar government with catchy little jokes, ditpoems, slogans, and cartoons. Later, Simon expanded intopoltergeist business by playing practical jokes on gov-goons bureaucrats. He always signed his work with a little cartoon im

of a grinning devil."Simon" was a game everyone could play, anyone who wantebug the ruling authoritarians, that is. Any pissed-off miner coscribble a bit of seditious graffiti on a wall and attribute it to "Simwith the easily scrawled logo. To the Authority, it seemed Simon Jester was everywhere, all the time.

We need Simon Jester now.

A "meme" is an idea, a thought; hopefully a seed that will germinin the recipient's mind and grow into a whole garden of worthwideas. In theory, one exposes people to short, memorable phra

or images which stick with them; rather like the tune you can'tout of your head. In this case, the "tune" is akin to Yankee DooDandy and is meant to generate thoughts on liberty.

Planting those mental seeds is what the Simon Jester Project iabout. To get you started, we've provided a few basic files.

Surely this is enough to get us started.

Enough plotting; let's get out and do something!

What to Do With This Stuff

Okay. We've told you who Simon Jester is. We've given yobunch of files for posters, stickers, flyers, et cetera.

So what the devil (pun intended <grin>) are you supposed towith this stuff?

Assuming you read The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, you shalready have a pretty good idea. But here some specifics you mtry:

• Flyers can go on bulletin boards, car windshields in parking or simply be handed out.

• The same goes for folded pamphlets, or you might put somthe form slots on bank tables and the counters at the post offic

• Stickers can go anywhere: Service counters at DMV, the office, post drop boxes, windows and doors. But if yoconsidering putting them on private property, also conswhether the owner might not appreciate it.

• Business cards can be handed out, left on magazine pilewaiting rooms, set on counters, stuck under windshield wiperseven flung out high windows. Try including one in all your

payment envelopes.• The Cthulhu election posters can go up anywhere you see o

campaign signs posted. Try putting them up in your car windotoo. If you stake out a polling station like the other campaaides, come election time, the Cthulhu posters go great withDemocracy Explained flyers to get voters' attention.

• Stickers can also go on packages and envelopes. Kinda Easter Seals, but a lot more fun.

ADMINISTRIVIAMike Blessing, Editor [ [email protected] ]

f you have news, interesting stories, op-ed pieces, a letter to theeditor, or timely information that you think belongs in the newsletter, please send it along. I can be contacted at 505-710-5197, or justsend it to email address [email protected].

When sending your submission as an MS Word (or Open OfficeText) file, send it single-spaced in 9-pt Arial – like this is. Marginsshould be half-inch (0.5”) around, with no headers or footers. If yousend it in a text-only format, make it clear to me if you want anythingn bold type, underlined, in italics, struck-through, different  colors,

etc. I’m not telepathic here, so help me out. And NO Wordperfectfiles – I can't open those.

Graphics (pictures, cartoons, etc.) – send the highest qualitygraphics you can – email them to me at the address above, and I’lldo what I can to get them in the next issue. In particular, what I wantare pictures of YOU the LPNM members, either at LPNM-sponsoredevents or at other peoples' events.

Submission deadline for each issue – midnight, third Tuesday of themonth.

Articles

As for writing your article, It should be concise (no longer than a fullpage) and topical. A bit of humor helps, especially for op-ed pieces.

What I'm really looking for in the way of articles is what's going on inthe LPNM – what YOU the membership are up to in spreading themessage. For example, an article about the stupidity, insanity andevil of the UN might get put in, depending on available space andthe quality of the article. A group of LPNM members counter-protesting the raising of a UN flag by the city council WILL get putn, and probably will get first priority.
