Dear New Member,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you as a Member of The Economic Club of New York, the premier forum for discussion on a wide range of issues facing New York City, the United States and the world. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, the Membership Committee, the Members, and me, we are thrilled to have you and look forward to sharing with you the full benefits of Club membership.

The Club was founded in 1907 and is nonpartisan, nonprofit, promotes no agenda and takes no sides on issues, encouraging speakers and Members alike to engage openly in thoughtful discussions. We have been honored to host Presidents, Heads of State, Supreme Court Justices and other speakers who are experts in their respective fields and who drive the conversations that shape the future.

This Reference Guide is part of our onboarding efforts to ensure all new Members take full advantage of membership from the start. In addition to being a Club Member, there are several other levels of involvement including Centennial Society, President’s Club and Chairman’s Circle. See page six for more information on membership participation levels.

We look forward to seeing you soon at an upcoming event.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION

Club events are held at private clubs, hotels and other venues throughout Midtown. Members are encouraged to invite as many guests to events as desired and are not required to be in attendance with the guests. These guests could include colleagues to encourage fresh intellectual communication, employees to promote professional insight, current or potential clients. Dues are electronically billed annually for the beginning of the calendar year. Members must pay annual dues prior to purchasing tickets to events.

As a new Member, you have access to the confidential information of other Club Members. You may change how your information is displayed by logging into the Member Portal or by contacting the Club.

A catalogue of past events can be found on the Club’s website, including videos and transcripts. Events are live-tweeted and streamed on Facebook Live when possible.

All Members are welcome and encouraged to sponsor new Full Members, Associate Members and Fellows. Applications are available on the website or through the Club. Prospective Full Members require two Member sponsors. Prospective Associate Members only require one Member sponsor. If you do not know a second Member sponsor, please reach out to the Club for assistance. See page 8 for more information on our Fellows Program.

Member donations to the Club are important and all gifts to the Club (General Fund or Centennial Society) are fully tax-deductible. There is a PayPal button on the Member Portal on the website that can be used for donations. In addition, checks may be mailed to the lockbox listed on all invoices and monthly statements.

For your information, the Club has many Members drawn from the Media and Entertainment sectors. These Members are allowed to enjoy all aspects of the Club but are not allowed to report on any personal interactions at events. Members in the media may choose to be seated in the media section at an event and thus cover the event.

CENTENNIAL SOCIETY GIVING MAKES A DIFFERENCE

7

CommunicationThrough continued upgrade and expansion of communications platforms, the Club’s valuable content is shared with the public. This includes increasing outreach to membership candidates, raising awareness with the next generation of members, and increasing engagement with journalists locally, nationally and globally to maximize coverage of the Club’s events around the world, furthering the Club’s mission.

Diversity of ProgrammingThe Club promotes timely and relevant conversations across a wide spectrum, while maintaining a balance of local, national and global topics. Each Member is unique in how they use their membership, many are drawn to programming in their own sector, while others enjoy topics across an array of subject matters. Opportunities to network with other Members and introduce guests, adds an additional benefit. Diverse event formats including breakfasts, lunches, dinners, evening receptions, and panels enable those with the busiest schedules to find time to attend.

Next GenerationCapturing rising and diverse business thought leaders is essential to advancing the Club’s role as the premier forum for discussing the most important social, economic, and political issues of our time. To achieve this, the Club works with Members to identify the next generation leaders, put the Club on their radar, and impress them with our relevancy to their world. Qualified candidates can then be comfortably on-boarded into the ECNY Fellows Program or the term-limited Associate Membership. Members sponsorship of student tables at events is another way the next generation can be introduced to the Club. Many young leaders who become involved in the Club go on to become Full Members.

Financial BackstopThe Club is in a solid financial position and the Centennial Funds are available to provide additional cash flow if needed. The Club has had a successful 113-year history, but during that time there have been ups and downs in the financial position of the Club. As intended by the Society’s founders over a decade ago and as a best practice, the existence and growth of the Centennial Fund, and its availability to support the mission and operations of the Club, at the discretion of its Board of Trustees, helps ensure the future success of the Club into the next century.

Contributions to the Centennial Society of The Economic Club of New York give engaged Members the opportunity to ensure the perpetuation of a forum for free and open discussion of topics impacting the world body politic - a tradition that has been ongoing since 1907. The Economic Club of New York is dedicated to fostering the future of executive talent and future Members. The Fellows Program is a specialized, year-long program for rising leaders below the C-suite level who have shown leadership and commitment to the Club’s ideals and provides programming to foster the growth of these outstanding individuals. We strongly encourage Club Members to consider sponsoring a Fellow, which enables them to potentially join what will be a select group of high-performing individuals. Discover more about the Fellows Program at www.econclubny.org/web/pages/fellows.

The Fellows gather throughout the year at intimate meetings hosted by preeminent Members of the Club to discuss and share insights on economics, finance and other timely business topics. Fellows are invited to network at several Club Signature events. Fellows are given the opportunity to ask the first question(s) to the Guest Speaker at the Club’s Breakfasts, participate in a friendly competition of “Economics Jeopardy” before a Member audience and are recognized by the entire membership at the Club’s annual closing dinner. Upon program completion, Fellows will possess many new insights and a broader network to expand their leadership impact.

REQUIREMENTS:This year-long program begins in January. Candidates should be rising executives that have approximately 7-15 years of experience in a leadership role with an impressive performance history, a significant educational background and reside and/or work in the New York Metro area. Women and diverse candidates are encouraged.

Please note there is no guarantee of admission to membership in the Club upon completion of the Fellows Program. Fellows may apply with the support of Club Member sponsor(s) to the Membership Committee for Associate Membership or Full Club Membership, depending on their seniority and accomplishments to date. There is a $1,500 administrative fee per Fellow, which may be paid by the sponsoring Member or Fellow.

A typical Club event features a distinguished guest speaker, and in some cases, more than one speaker. To achieve the most from membership with The Economic Club of New York, the average Member attends two to three events each year and brings guests and sponsors student tables. All members are also invited to either purchase tickets for guests or buy full tables at incentive pricing to facilitate connections among colleagues, clients and employees.

Members receive regular email announcements for upcoming events. To access our most current events schedule, please visit www.econclubny.org. In addition, as a new Member, you now have access to the Member portal, where you will need to log in (see page 11).

PURCHASING EVENT TICKETS:

All events are ticketed, so members must purchase tickets at www.econclubny.org through the Member portal. Members must log in with credentials provided upon membership approval. Call the Club office if you need assistance at 212-947-7738.

You must provide email addresses for all guests to virtual events so that they may receive their unique link to attend the event. You may send these to [email protected]. You do not have to attend in-person events with your guests. Please provide names of guests during the online registration process to ensure a smooth check-in.

Ticket pricing varies by event type. Member receive exclusive pricing for their personal ticket. Check the Member website and email invitation for exact pricing or see page 17 for the 2020 pricing list.

Members are welcome to sign up for events up until the last minute, however, to mitigate the resulting financial risk absorbed by the Club, there will be an incremental increase to the Member ticket price when purchased within two weeks of the event.

At in-person events there is a financial incentive for purchasing tables of ten at one time. To seat 11 or 12 people at your table, you may purchase 1 or 2 additional individual tickets. Tables are typically assigned in the order of ticket purchase date. If attending, you will be seated with your guests unless requested otherwise. Centennial Members will have priority seating in the room. Any tickets purchased within 72 hours of an event may not be held to these parameters due to venue constraints, but staff will accommodate as best as possible.

Please email [email protected] for specific seating requests (i.e. sitting with another Member) and staff will do their best to accommodate.

CANCELLATION POLICY: Virtual Event Cancelation Policy: If you have signed up for an ECNY digital webinar event, cancellations are not permitted once you have received your unique webinar link. All in person events have a cancellation policy in place. Members may only receive a refund if cancelled within two weeks prior to the event date. Breakfasts may receive a refund if cancelled at least one week prior to the event.

To cancel your reservation or make changes or additions, you must call or email the Club at 212-947-7738 or [email protected].

EVENT CHECK-IN:

Upon arrival at the event, tickets will be provided at the registration desk.

Member tickets allow only the Member (not the Guest) into the VIP Reception, which will typically have its own complimentary Coat Check and may provide access to the speaker prior to the event.

Both Member and Guest tickets allow admittance into the Guest Reception. Centennial Society, President’s Club and Chairman’s Circle Members may bring one guest into the VIP Reception.

Please be aware that you may be photographed during events.

NAME BADGES:

New Members will receive a Member badge with their New Member Packet. We suggest that you wear your badge at all events your first year, to enable the membership and staff to better welcome you to the Club.

STUDENT TABLE SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:

As part of the Club’s efforts to foster the future of executive talent and membership, we encourage our Members to sponsor Student tables at our events. Whether a Member is planning to attend an event or not, sponsoring Student tables is a wonderful way to help the Club achieve its mission to promote the study and discussion of social, economic and political questions by embracing the expression of diverse views and opinions in a free and open environment. The Club has had the pleasure of hosting students from many colleges and universities and graduate programs and our goal is to continue this initiative and further broaden the roster of schools. On behalf of Members interested in sponsoring Student tables, Club staff will contact a school of the Club’s choosing, or a specific school of the Member’s choosing and manage all of the details. As a non-profit, the Club considers all donations as generous gifts and we value the involvement of our Members in all initiatives put forth to further strengthen our shared goals. If you are interested in supporting our mission by sponsoring Student tables, please call (212) 947-7738 or email us at [email protected].

You will receive a brief survey after each event to share your feedback. Feel free to reach out to the Club if you have any questions or comments by email at [email protected] or call 212-947-7738.
