  • ISSUE NO 201512 - 28 April 2015

    FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Hello to all in the St Brigid's community.

    Week 2 Term 2

This Sunday is the Fifth Sunday of the Easter Season.

The Readings this week again give us an insight into the future of Christianity post the Pentecost event. In the

First Reading, again from the Acts of the Apostles, we see the introduction of Saul, later to be known as St Paul,

into the history of the Christian story. Unfortunately we also are introduced to the first division in the church – is

Christ's message for everyone or just the Jews?

In the Second Reading from the First Letter of St John the writer urges the community to be faithful and to

demonstrate their love for one another in their daily deeds and actions.

In the Gospel Jesus’ lesson that he is the vine and God is the vinedresser is read. This powerful lesson reminds

us that those who remain connected to Jesus bear much fruit and that those who bear the fruit are Jesus’

    disciples.

When all three reading are considered together we can see the emergence of the early church from a loose

collection of followers of the charismatic Jesus to an identifiable group notable for their outward demonstration of

love for all, guided by the Holy Spirit and their zeal in spreading the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Enjoy the readings pointing to the imminent birth of the church.

    ANZAC Day

Thanks to all the students, staff and parents who were able to represent St Brigid’s at the Nerang community

ANZAC Day ceremony on Saturday. In particular thanks to Ms Bray who coordinated our participation in the

    event.

Thanks also to Mrs Kingston who organised our moving and meaningful ANZAC Day Liturgy on last Friday. I wish

to congratulate the children on the RESPECT that they showed during our liturgy and thank all the staff and

students who contributed to the liturgy in any way. I also thank all the parents and other family members who

were able to join us for St Brigid’s Centenary ANZAC Day liturgy.

What’s on over the following week

Assembly prayer this week was led by the Year 2B class whilst 2C will lead next weeks’.

Interviews for Prep enrolments for 2016 continue this week.

    commencing at 8:00am.

Year 5 will host a visit from St Michael's staff and students Wednesday April 29th.

Years 5 and 6 Student Led Conferences will be held this week.

Interschool sport for Years 5 and 6 will continue on Friday.

The Parents and Friends’ Association Mothers’ Day Stall will be held on Tuesday May 5th.

The monthly School Board Meeting will be held on Wednesday May 6th commencing at 6pm.

Prep Parent Teacher Interviews will be held next week.

St Brigid's Cross Country Carnival will be held next Wednesday as per the timetable published on the Parent

    Portal.

    Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L)

This week we will be revising all three rules; Respect for Self and Others, Respect for Learning and Respect for

Property. Please reinforce these rules at home by the way you speak to and with your children and the way you

interact with the various people in your daily lives.

    Gold Coast Police Notice

Police from the Gold Coast District will be running a major school traffic operation emphasising safe driving

behaviour and student’s traffic awareness around St Brigid’s starting this week.

    This Week, 27th

April to the 1st May - is the operation’s Education and Proactive Week.

During this week Police Officers intend to visit St Brigid’s (either before or after school) and reward students for

good traffic behaviour, be it wearing bike helmets, using the crossing, exiting the vehicle on the footpath side etc.

At the same time Police will be talking to parents in relation to good driving behaviour around school zones,

correct procedures for parking etc and educating on driving offences. (In saying that any life endangering

offences will be dealt with accordingly).

    Next week, Week – 4th

    May – 8th

May – is the Enforcement Week.

During this week officers will specifically be tasked to attend St Brigid’s and enforce all road rules and regulations

and tickets will be issued to all drivers committing offences.

Helping children to cross the road safely

Children may cut it more closely than their parents realise when it comes to guessing how far cars are from an

intersection or how long it takes to safely reach the other side. Using virtual reality, researchers tested how often

children might walk into oncoming traffic in real life. The results show that parents may be over-estimating how

careful their children are and may need to teach them safer habits. Study participants wore headsets outfitted

with a 3-D display and motion sensors to detect every real step they took into virtual streets. Researchers asked

  • the children to cross the virtual street when they thought traffic conditions were safe. Researchers measured how

many seconds the virtual cars were from hitting children when they crossed the street. Then, they put parents in

the same situation and asked them when they thought their children would attempt to cross. Parents generally

expected their children not to cross the street when an oncoming car was less than 4 seconds away, while the

children crossed into traffic with tighter gaps of about 3 seconds. We need to be realistic about children's

developmental level and not over-estimate their ability to judge safe distances. A small error can result in the

    child being seriously injured.

To keep children safe, adults need to start by setting a good example. Children learn a lot just by watching. If

parents and older children behave in dangerous ways, younger children are likely to do so also. Older children

may take greater risks dashing out between cars.

Pedestrian safety lessons need to start early when children have to cross busy intersections from a very young

age. For toddlers, parents can talk about what safety choices they make each time they cross the street, from

looking both ways to making eye contact with drivers. By the time children are 4 or 5 years old, parents can start

letting children (under close supervision) make the decision about when it's safe to cross a street, starting with

residential streets with light traffic before trying busy intersections. This lets parents gently correct bad choices so

children can fine-tune their instincts about when it's safe to cross. Talking to children about why they need to

follow particular rules or procedures for crossing safely is a good approach, like pointing out the good sense in

walking a little further to use a pedestrian crossing rather than take a risk.

    Principal Performance Review

    Dear Parents/Guardians

    Re: Principal Performance Review

All those in Senior Management positions in Brisbane Catholic Education, participate in regular performance

appraisal processes to assist in their professional development planning.

Mr Kevin Bianchi is undertaking such a review in Term 2, 2015.

As a component of this process, a confidential on-line survey is being conducted by the Ardjuna Corporate

    Services.

Currently a sample of families selected across various year levels have received an invitation to participate in this

survey. The invitation was emailed directly to families by Ardjuna. This survey will be conducted over a two week

    period.

Community consultation is highly valued and I thank you for your participation.

    Visible Learning

Learning continues to be an important focus right across our school. Through making it clear what ‘effective

learners’ do, we are building students capacity to be effective learners. This in turn improves student learning

    outcomes.

Students who are effective learners can articulate what they are learning about and why.

To support this at home parents could:

Encourage students to talk about something they learned at school either formally (in class or informally

    and why it was significant.

Discuss with your child something you are learning about and why this is important to you.

    ANZAC DAY 2015 – 100th Anniversary

What a wonderful start to Term 2. The students of St Brigid’s have really engaged in the true meaning of ANZAC

day this year. They say every picture tells a story so see below for some snapshots of how we commemorated

this very important milestone. (The ANZAC day display will remain in the ECO Enquiry for another 2 weeks.)

    God of love and liberty,

we thank You for the peace and security we enjoy.

It was won for us through the courage and devotion of those

who gave their lives in time of war.

We pray that their labour and sacrifice may not be in vain,

but that their spirit may live on in us and in generations to come.

We ask this prayer in the name of Jesus

As I’m sure you are aware, NAPLAN is quickly approaching. For our Year Three students, this will be the first

time they will sit the NAPLAN tests. For our Year Fives, it will be the last they do in a primary school setting. This

week’s article, written by Michael Grose parenting expert, assists parents to prepare their children for NAPLAN in

a different way to our teachers. He discusses the pressure that is placed on our children around the time of these

tests and how the best approach is a positive, optimistic view that they are a learning experience for both

completing tests and also for managing nerves or anxiety. Children have been found to mimic their parents’

thinking styles, so if you can take a positive attitude, it is more likely that your child will also.

    Year 1 News

Grade One parents are invited to a meeting to be held in 1A/1B from 2-3 p.m. on Thursday. The meeting is an

information session to provide support and ideas to help your child acquire literacy skills. If you are considering

coming in as a volunteer helper this term in the classroom it is a good idea to attend this session.

This term Grade One commences a formal Spelling book call ‘Spelling Conventions’. List words from the text will

form the basis of the home spelling program. Each week the spelling patterns in the words are reviewed and

activities for a unit of work undertaken. The program assists children to become more aware of spelling when

reading and writing. Spelling words are different to sight words. The sight words are based on the frequency or

how often you come across particular words when reading. Spelling words are based on spelling patterns.

In Prep, spelling was based on obvious sounds as children endeavoured to spell words that were

consonant/vowel/consonant such as sun, dog, or Mum. Grade One focus for spelling is for regular spelling

patterns, word building e.g. b- ell, and commonly used words in writing such as my, I, the. Spelling programs are

developmentally based and sequential. Grade One has also commenced a handwriting book. By Term 2

children are better able to specifically focus on letter direction and follow teacher instructions to have greater

success with letter formation and direction. Children are expected by the end of the year to be able to form upper

    and lower case letters correctly.

    Year 2 News

Last Wednesday the Year 2 students participated in the Hinze History Heroes program at the Hinze Dam.

Here is what some of the children had to say about the experience:

"The Hinze Dam was very big." - Zac

also attended services, with their families, in the local community.

Year 2B lead assembly on Monday. The focus was being a 'good shepherd.'

Congratulations to all the students who travelled to school in an Active School Travel way on Tuesday, April 28

and enjoyed the AST breakfast. This was followed by a show starring Zero to Hero where students learned the

importance of travelling in an AST way.

    Year 3 News

Year Three is busy learning about persuasive texts. We have loved reading books such as Don’t Let the Pigeon

Drive the Bus, Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay up Late and ‘I Wanna Iguana’. Children will present their first

persuasive talk this week on ‘Homework Should/Should Not Be Banned.’ The teachers look forward to hearing

    lots of convincing arguments!

Library re-commenced on Tuesday, Week 2. Please don’t forget to return all Cross Country permission slips as

    soon as possible.

  • The children are to be congratulated for their very respectful behaviour at Friday’s ANZAC Day liturgy. It was

clear that everyone genuinely wanted to pay their respects to honour the servicemen and women who have

served or who are serving for Australia. The singing club also sang beautifully. Well done boys and girls!

We would like to share with you some memorable moments from the past week.

I enjoyed sport this week because we got to play games like dodge ball and stuck in the mud. Naarishma 3C

I liked playing Dominoes and Uno in the library. Mia L 3B

I enjoyed playing handball in the hall with Cooper, Jamie and Carter. Ryan 3A

    Year 4 News

Year 4 are continuing their reading about Nim and her exciting and brave adventures on the island. They are

gaining a wider range of vocabulary as they learn about how to survive everyday life on an island. As part of their

assessment for the term the students will make a paper mache island. We are asking each student to bring in a

piece of sturdy cardboard named for this activity. An old box cut up would be perfect.

Our Geography component this term has begun with naming the continents of the world, and which hemisphere

Australia is situated in. The students will then begin their inquiry based learning about different types of habitats.

    Year 6 News

  • The Year 6 students showed a great deal of reverence this week in our lead-up activities to Anzac day. During

library both classes have been designing posters that would have been used in the recruitment of soldiers in

World War 1. The students worked in groups and their high levels of productivity produced impressive

results. These posters, as well as many other displays can be seen in the Eco-Inquiry foyer. Please feel free

to visit. On Thursday, Mrs Kingston's husband, Craig Kingston, spoke to the students about his experience in the

War in the Middle East. He showed them photos of where he and his family were stationed and what it was like

fighting for peace. This gave the students an idea of what war is like in modern times. On Friday, our Anzac Day

liturgy, organised by Mrs Kingston, was a respectful tribute to the forces who have fought for our country both

present and past. The school leaders who took part in the liturgy were, Ella R, Isabel, Emma, Alex D and Jett C,

Mia G and Brodie. They did an outstanding job.

Thank you for returning payment for the leadership shirts. They will be ordered this week and will take around 5

    weeks.

Student-led conferences will be held on Thursday afternoon. There are still places if you have not returned your

    form.
