ISSUE NO 201510 - 31 March 2015

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Hello to all in the St Brigid's community.

Week 10 Term 1

This Sunday Is Easter Sunday

This weekend is the highlight of the liturgical calendar. The Easter Triduum is a three day event, Holy Thursday

evening, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Vigil and Sunday, marking the passion, death and resurrection

of Christ. The Easter Triduum marks the end of Lent and the start of the Easter Season which lasts for the 50

days until Pentecost.

On the evening of Holy Thursday we remember the Last or Lord’s Supper where, amongst other significant

events, Jesus taught graphically about Christian leadership by washing the feet of his followers. On Good Friday

we mark the passion, crucifixion and death of Jesus. Holy Saturday is a silent, barren day as we reflect further on

the death of Jesus and his journey into the afterlife. On Saturday night and Easter Sunday we celebrate the

resurrection of Jesus as the Christ and his victory over death.

The times for the various Easter Triduum liturgies at St Brigid’s Parish are-

Holy Thursday -Thursday 2nd April Mass of the Lord’s Supper 7.00pm. Adoration till 9.00pm

Good Friday - Friday 3rd April Stations of the Cross 10.00am. Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion 3.00pm

Easter Sunday Saturday 4th April Easter Vigil 6.30pm

Sunday 5th April Mass 8.30am – St Brigid’s. Mass at Beechmont 10.30am

Buddy Bench

Our Buddy Bench was delivered on last Friday as part of a GoldFM radio promotion. The three rules of the Buddy

bench are simple:

If you choose to sit on the bench, you must say ‘yes’ to the first friend who invites you to play, or walk

and talk

If you see a friend sitting on the bench, invite them to play, or walk and talk.

Two friends sitting on the bench can turn to each other and invite each other to play or walk and talk

The Buddy Bench is located under the tree at the bottom of the ramp leading from the MPA to the years P-3 play

area.

What’s on over the following week

Assembly prayer this week was lead by the Year 3C class. Our next assembly will be on 20th of April and the

prayer will be lead by the 2A class.

Yesterday the Years 3 and 4 students participated in an incursion with staff from Ngutana lui, the Brisbane

Catholic Education Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Study Centre.

Easter Vacation

It’s hard to believe that Term 1 2015 is almost finished. The last day of Term One will be this Thursday April 2nd

and Term 2 will commence on Monday April 20th

. I wish all a restful and safe holiday and ask all those taking to

the roads to drive carefully and return safely for the start of Term Two.

Parents and Friends’ Easter raffle

Thanks to all those who supported the Parents and Friends’ Association Easter raffle by donating prizes and/or

purchasing tickets. A list of the 38 winners is published on the Parent Portal. Prizes can be collected from the

school office.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L)

This week we will be expanding on Rule #1: Respect for self and others at the bus stop. Each day a small

number of children gather at the bus stop in McLaren road to catch after school buses. Being such a public place

it is important that these children, in particular, are reminded to show respect for self and others whilst waiting for

their buses.

Staffing News

We bid farewell to Mr Gudgeon for Term 2. Brisbane Catholic Education has been invited by the Australian

Government to provide educational support for Nauruan, refugee and asylum-seeker students on the island of

Nauru. Mr Gudgeon has volunteered to be part of this support and has been offered and has accepted a

deployment for Term 2.

We wish Mr Gudgeon all the best as he engages in this challenging yet I am sure rewarding deployment to Nauru

and look forward to the insights he can share with us when he returns.

Arrangements have been put in place to ensure that there is no disruption to the learning program in Mr

Gudgeon’s classes while he is in Nauru. Mrs Bronwyn Messenger will fill the Physical Education teacher role in

Mr Gudgeon’s absence.

Parents approaching children

Each year I need to write and remind our school community members that it is never appropriate for parents to

approach children at school to reprimand them for alleged misbehaviour. Recently there have been several

allegations of parents approaching children on school property. Please be aware that all visitors, including

parents, are allowed access to school property by invitation of the principal. Under the Education (General

Provisions) Act 1989 the school principal has the authority to ban individuals from school property to ensure the

safety or wellbeing of other persons lawfully at the school premises, to prevent or minimise damage to the

premises or property at the premises, to maintain good order at the premises, or for the proper management of

the school. I will have no hesitation in exercising this authority if the circumstances require such action.

If you have a complaint about children’s behaviour please refer it to the school authorities for investigation. I can’t

guarantee you will agree with the outcome but there will be one and it will be communicated to you.

Prep 2016 enrolments

We have commenced our enrolment interviews for next year’s Prep cohort. If you have a younger child eligible to

start Prep next year or have friends or relatives with children eligible to start Prep in 2016 please submit an

enrolment application and/or advise your friends or relatives to do so over the next fortnight. Enrolment

applications are available from the office or available to be downloaded from our website www.sb.qld.edu.au

Children are required to turn 5 by 30th

June 2016 to be eligible to enrol in Prep for next year.

Police Advice

Queensland Police have advised that they will be conducting a Traffic Operation early in term two to target traffic

offences in and around St Brigid’s. The operation will be conducted in stages over four weeks involving;

Information, Education, Enforcement and Publication of the operation.

Student Protection Training for School Volunteers 2015

Student Protection is everyone’s responsibility. Prior to volunteering in classrooms we ask that you complete the

student protection training (annually) as outlined below:

Volunteers who are parents or guardians of students at St Brigid’s must read the following documents & sign the

‘School Volunteer Register Sheet’:

Volunteer Student Protection Handbook

Volunteer Code of Conduct

These documents are available to read and sign in the front office as required or on the Parent Portal.

Volunteers other than Parents or Guardians of students will be required to provide either of the following

documents:

Positive Notice Blue Card Registration number

Exemption card registration number

Please note that these cards will need to be presented to office staff for copying.

The final step is to complete and sign the ‘School Volunteer Register’ sheet before handing in to front office staff.

Please consult a member of the schools leadership team should you have any questions about the volunteer

registration process.

Medical Meetings

In coming weeks I will be making contact with parents of students who are impacted by serious medical

conditions such as anaphylaxis, epilepsy and other intolerances. A medical action plan will be created in

consultation with parents and shared with school staff. Please be mindful that:

Students should not bring nuts or foods containing nut products to school.

Students are not to swap or share foods whilst at school.

Students who are considered to be affected by asthma are required to provide the classroom teacher

with an asthma management plan. These can be obtained through visiting a Doctor or the following

website: http://www.asthmaaustralia.org.au/

Your child’s written Asthma Action Plan outlines:

1. What medication to take every day (even when you are feeling well).

2. How to tell if your asthma is getting worse.

3. What you should do if your symptoms are getting worse.

4. What to do if you have an asthma attack.

Having a written asthma action plan can help to:

o Reduce your chance of needing to go to hospital, or for an urgent doctor visit

o Improve your lung function

o Reduce the number of days off school due to asthma

Sometimes plans are based on your symptoms, while others are based on your peak flow score. You and your

doctor or nurse can decide together what will work best for you.

Through having current and accurate documentation on student’s medical conditions teachers are better able to

meet their needs and ensure they remain happy and healthy.

APRE NEWS

Holy Week

A big thank you to Mrs Vekaci and Mrs Coman and the students of 3C who led our Holy Week prayer this

week. It was a very moving account of the journey that Jesus made in the last days before his death. The

candles reminded us that Jesus is indeed the light of the world and through his resurrection is with us in our

families, our school and our community.

The Holy Week story will continue to be ‘lived’ by all our students during their participation in the Holy Week

Prayer Walk on Wednesday and Thursday this week. The teachers have also been invited to participate in the

Stations of the Cross in the church during this week.

Project Compassion – THANK YOU!

A big thank you to our wonderful St Brigid’s students and their families. We have managed to raise just over

$1800 in support of Project Compassion.

End of Term Mass

Last week’s Mass was a lovely way to end what has been a very busy term. Thanks must go to Mrs Sandstrom,

Mr Gudgeon, Mrs Wilson, Bill Wilson and the students in the ‘Singing Club’ who filled our Church with music and

song. We thank Father Rafal for nurturing us with many Lenten and Easter messages and for also leading us in

a special whole school blessing as we wished Mr Gudgeon well on his Nauru adventure next term.

ANZAC DAY 2015 – 100th Anniversary

ANZAC Day this year is shaping up to be a wonderful educational experience and a memorable time for our

students. As we approach ANZAC day in Term 2, the children will be getting involved a range of activities and

events (listed in last week’s newsletter).

Remember to ask your children what their class has been doing in library time this week!

If you have any connections to the military and would like to be involved in our ANZAC day liturgy (Friday 24

April 9.15am MPA) please email me [email protected].

Miss Bray will be organising a group of St Brigid’s students to walk in the ANZAC day march next term (end of

Week 1). More details regarding this will be provided in the first newsletter next term.

Buying Easter Eggs this year?

When buying your Easter Eggs this year, please consider purchasing those with the ‘FAIRTRADE’ logo. Their

young workers have been treated justly and this certification ensures that these children are protected and not

used for forced and abusive trade labour.

Fairtrade “is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers

and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices, Fairtrade addresses the

injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It

enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.”http://fairtrade.com.au/page/what-

Happy Easter Everyone

We begin our Easter holidays at the end of this week and I sincerely hope that this proves to be a peaceful time

for your family and a time for your children to rest and recharge. This weekend we get the opportunity as

Catholics to live the Easter message through the various church celebrations. Try to make this, which is an

important time for us, in the life of the church, a time to reflect on the death and resurrection of Jesus and be

reminded of the relevance of this to our Christian lives.

I wish everyone in our St Brigid’s community a Happy and Holy Easter!

Expressions Of Interest- Instrumental Band Lessons

I am exploring several options for establishing and building a strong and ongoing instrumental program here at St

Brigid's and I am very keen to hear from any parents who are interested in their child participating in band

lessons - ie learning a concert band instrument such as flute, clarinet, trumpet saxophone etc.

Please send your details and any comment via email to [email protected].

This is not a commitment - but a gauge of the support among the school community.

Thank you.

ACTIVE SCHOOL TRAVEL

Next term we are having our second breakfast on Tuesday the 28th

of April. All welcome. We will welcome Zero

the Hero at the breakfast and to an assembly afterwards. Zero will entertain the P to 3 grades, teaching them

about road safety.

The 4 to 6 grades will be entertained in June. There will be more news to come.

We continue to encourage all our students to travel actively to school every day. Each Wednesday the teachers

will continue to ask the children how they travel to and from school.

Next term we will start our passport system, whereby the children who travel actively to school are rewarded.

We hope to start this in week 3.

Enjoy our photos of some of our children travelling actively to school.

CLASS NEWS

Prep News

This week we are revising all of the letters and sounds learnt throughout Term One. These revised sounds are

Ss, Aa, Tt, Ii, Pp, Nn, Cc and Kk. Please keep encouraging your child to know all the sounds and words that we

have focussed on, as it is necessary for the early stages of reading and writing.

We are onto our 7th colour of the rainbow to represent this week of Lent. We are experiencing Jesus’ journey

during Palm Sunday, The Last Supper, praying in the garden and dying on the Cross. The children are looking

forward to Easter and new life. Please ensure that your child takes their butterfly from their cocoon, and discuss

their ‘promise’ that they made during Lent. The butterfly signifies new life and how they have grown and changed

to become a better person.

We hope you all have a happy and holy Easter. Enjoy the holidays with your family and friends, stay safe and

have lots of fun!

Year 1 News

This week Grade One will have a visit from our local Nerang Fire Brigade. The firefighters will visit us again later

in the year to reinforce their message of fire safety. The children get to look at the fire-fighting equipment and

what someone looks like when they are fully dressed in this gear. The aim is to de-sensitise children to the very

imposing figure of someone in a full suit and mask as someone dressed in full firefighting gear looks scary. The

Firefighters explain they need the special boots, pants, jacket and mask to stay safe, when inside a burning

building. Children are told not to be frightened of someone dressed in the special gear and not to hide from

firefighters, as they are there to assist them. The important messages for our children in the event of a fire are-

‘Get Down Low and Go, Go, Go’. If on fire - ‘Stop! Drop! Roll!’ If your house is on fire- ‘Get out and Stay out!’

It has been a very busy week as we have listened to the Bible stories of Holy Week, the week starting the

Sunday before Easter Sunday with Palm Sunday when Jesus rode into Jerusalem, on a donkey. We have

looked at the very busy week Jesus had before his death, including Holy Thursday and Good Friday. We had a

very busy week as we made symbols to match each of these very significant days and events in the life of Jesus.

Your child will be able to access Readings Eggs over the holidays. Reading Eggs provides literacy skills with

practise, revision and consolidation activities. While readers will not be sent home over the holidays both

Reading Eggs and Sunshine online have libraries with suitable reading material available. The majority of

children in Grade One going on Sunshine should log in as an Emergent Reader (Level 1-6). Remember to enjoy

literature by reading and sharing picture books on a daily basis. Gold Coast City Council libraries have many

resources available. The libraries have books with C.D’s that might be helpful to keep children listening to stories

on those long Easter holiday trips. Visit the local library and enjoy sharing some of the literature your child

chooses. Holidays are also a good time to catch up general vision and hearing check-ups. Have fun and keep

safe.

Year 2 News

Thank you to all the parents/carers who attended Parent-Teacher Conferences last week. It was a good

opportunity to celebrate students' success in learning this term and identify those areas that need further

scaffolding and support. We encourage all to continue reading each day, learn their spelling and revise sight

words. Please encourage your child to read throughout the holidays.

Last Friday Gold FM attended school to present St. Brigid's with a 'Buddy Bench'. If students see another student

sitting on the 'Buddy Bench', they are encouraged to go and sit next to them - talk to them and/or invite them to

play.

This week is Holy Week and we celebrated with a Prayer Walk around the school reflecting on the events leading

up to Easter.

2A assembly is presenting assembly on Monday, April 20 which is Week 1 of Term 2. 2B assembly is on

Monday, April 27, which is Week 2 of Term 2.

2C assembly is on Monday, May 4, which is Week of Term 2.

Enjoy the Easter break.

Year 3 News

Welcome to Week 10, the last week of the term. Thank you to all our parents for making the time to see your

child’s teacher. It was a very worthwhile week for all parties involved!

The children thoroughly enjoyed the visit yesterday from the Ngutana-Lui Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

Cultural Studies Centre. The children were involved all day and we hope they shared some stories with you.

We will share some photos next term.

We had Gold FM out on Friday to celebrate our new Buddy Bench. This bench is for the children to sit on if

they’re feeling sad or lonely. We hope that another child will notice and go over and sit with this child and offer to

play.

We would like to share some comments from your beautiful children.

“I have loved drawing my map of my penthouse. I like my bedrooms because they’re nice and detailed. ” Bobbi

3A

“I enjoyed the art lesson, using the elements of art and designing my hand.” Neja 3B

“I enjoyed playing AFL for sport. I enjoyed throwing the ball.” Deet 3C

A different twist to “How was your day?” Instead why not try, “Did you do something nice to someone today?”

We wish you a super week and a great Easter break!

Year 4 News

Thankyou to all parents for their quick response in returning the parent teacher notes to their class teachers. We

look forward to meeting with you and discussing your child’s progress for term 1, 2015.

Tablet Update:

Some children are still returning their tablets with little or no charge, especially after a weekend. It is the

responsibility of your child (perhaps with your gentle reminders) to have them charged ready for the

next school day. Children whose tablets are uncharged will not be able to do so at school unless there

have been exceptional circumstances which prevented doing so at home. If they are not charging,

please try using a different outlet, or make sure your child is using the correct charging position and

the connection is solid.

Students are able to access Literacy Planet (with your permission of course) at home, completing any

tasks that have been set.

Over the holidays it might be tempting to take your child’s tablet away on holidays with you. Please

leave them at home and don’t take the risk of losing it or having it damaged.

PASSION WEEK

Palm Sunday has just taken place and we are in the midst of Holy Week. Thursday Year 4 will be going

on a prayer walk around the school to learn more about Easter and the events of Passion Week.

Events

The people from Ngutana-Lui Cultural Centre at Inala came to our school to share their culture with our students.

It was for most of the day and was a great experience for everyone. You can be proud of your children and the

way they welcomed our visitors.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Have a safe and Happy Easter break and come back refreshed and ready for another term of highs, lows and in-

betweens.

Year 6 News

Year 6s listened to a presentation from staff from Aquinas College on Wednesday morning. They informed us of

some of the exciting changes that high school will bring, and more specifically some of the subjects offered at

Aquinas. Mr Weinert was one of the visitors and he did some activities with us in the classroom as well.

The first stage of Reader's Cup has been run and won by Dragon Warriors in a tie-breaker with the Dream Team

in 6B, and by the Four Musketeers with Flower Power runners up in 6A. This Thursday these 4 teams will go

head to head to determine the winning team from all of Grade 6. After this challenge, a school team will be

selected to represent us in further competitions against other Gold Coast Schools.

We would like to wish all of our Grade 6s and their families a peaceful and relaxing Easter and holidays and we

look forward to seeing you all back happy and healthy for term 2

The student needs to have previously received a dose at home without any ill effects.

The medication must be collected when it is no longer required at school.

A new form must be completed if the student is prescribed a change.

NB: Where possible, medication should be administered to your child at home at times other than during school

hours.
