Endowment Recipients

SelectedJoan Wilson

Endowment Committee Chairman

The Quilter’s Guild of Dallas has an Endowment Committee whose responsibility is to publish the Guild’s criteria for Grant Awards on our Guild Web Site and to review the applications that are received each year. Our Guild makes available $5,000 in grant funds each year to be awarded in full or in part to individuals or organizations which have a need for funding assistance for their projects that will further the art of quilting.

The Endowment Committee received four grant applications this year. Of those four, three were felt to be worthy of our grant monies. Since we did not make an award in the 2008-2009 guild year due to no applications having been submitted, we had board approval to consider applications up to a total of $10,000.

The recipients for our 2009-2010 grant year are:• Francine Miller with the Kirby Quilt Club, Wichita Falls, TX. Ms. Miller

works with approximately 20 students from low income families, teaching them how to quilt. These classes make a quilt each year that is then raffled to raise funds for their local SPCA. The grant award to Ms. Miller is $750.

• The University of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE; International Quilt Studies Center, is our second recipient. The Center is producing an exhibition called “Voices from the Past” which will include numerous antique quilts. They were in need of funding for the production of the exhibits catalog which will be used by researchers for years. They will receive $4,800.

• Our final recipient is the Arizona Quilter’s Hall of Fame, Inc., Phoenix AZ. This organization is working in conjunction with Avlyn Fabrics to produce a fabric design to be used specifically for the state Centennial in 2012. Quilters and guilds from all over the state will be submitting quilts for inclusion in a challenge exhibit about the history of Arizona. There will be statewide quilt shows, exhibits and tours that will result from this project. Our grant award is $2,000.I would like to personally thank everyone who participated on the

Endowment Committee. This is a daunting project, and it was only with your input that we were able to make the review process as smooth as it was and meet our responsibilities in a timely fashion. Thank you.

Please note, important changes regarding entry forms and information.

The Show Committee and the Board have decided we will no longer print a separate “pre-show brochure”. Instead, you can find all the information on the rules, categories, the entry form, and Frequently Asked Questions in this edition of the newsletter. This information will also be in the 2010-2011 Guild Directory, which is scheduled to be mailed in October. Additionally, this information will be posted on the Guild website in October.

As previously stated, your Show Committee has been busy. We now have 21 vendors scheduled; 5 of those signed up as sponsors. The judges have signed their contracts, and the appraisers have been secured as well. The bumper stickers have been printed and are ready to be included in your membership packets. They are the easily removable kind so you will able to take them off your car after the show. (They truly are easy to remove; I’ve done so for the last several years).

In the next several months you will be asked to sign up to volunteer at the show. I hope you will do so, as every job is important and it takes all of us to create a quilt show the size of Dallas Quilt Celebration.

Dear Guild Members:

I want to thank all the members for the beautiful quilt that was presented at the September general meeting. It is absolutely terrific and will be a reminder of my time as president with the Guild.

It has been an honor to serve as President for the past two years. Thanks to those that served on the executive board and on the many standing and special committees. The guild would not operate without the many volunteers.

Being president was a great personal experience and a learning opportunity, but as good as it has been, I’m happy to turn the responsibilities over to Marla, and finding other ways to contribute my time to the Guild.

Marcia Hampton, Past President

The Library just received an order of 27 books and there’s something for everyone: traditional & contemporary quilts, quilt design and skill building, applique and paper piecing, fabric dyeing and digital quilting even one on mystery quilts. To help you find these books, we’ll be keeping them on the library check-out table for a few months.

Five new books in keeping with the 2011 Dallas Quilt Celebration theme of “stars” are: • StellarQuilts by Judy Martin. Judy does for stars what she did for log cabins.• Quilter’sFavorites-PiecedPoints&Stars by various C&T Publishing authors. A

collection of 19 radiant projects for all skill levels.• QuiltMavens:PerfectPaperPiecing by Deb Karasik & Janet Mednick. All about

making those perfect long, narrow, sharp spikes. Designs for 6-8 quilts. Includes a pattern CD compatible with Windows and Mac.

• LittleLoneStarQuilts by Lorraine Olsen. How to make perfect miniature lone stars.• A skill-builder in this area is a book by our June speaker, Sally Collins: Mastering

PrecisionPiecing, a book chocked full of easy but specific ideas and techniques. The Library opens by 6:30 pm before the Guild meeting, so there’s lots of time to browse.

Our listing of books is also on the Guild website. Go to: www.quiltersguildofdallas.org and then click on “Events & Links”. Borrowed books are due at the following meeting. Overdue books are $1.00 per month per book. Questions or suggestions email: [email protected]

3rd Annual

Famous-Apple-Cake-Eating-

and -Miniature -Quilt-Making-

Workshop:Once Again a Success!

On Sunday, September 12th, the 3rd annual Miniature Quilt Workshop was held at Quilters Connection, at no cost to guild members. The main focus was on paper piecing miniatures, but traditional quilting techniques were also used. Eleven (11) people attended the workshop and got a good start on the miniature quilt they plan to donate to the guild this year.

The attendees were Lois Logan, Cleola Green, Linda Newman, Ann West, Sue Maze, Holly Laughlin, Linda Piper, Janet Kriv, Caitlyn Kriv, Pam Hanson, and Jan Honeycutt. When you see them, ask them if they enjoyed themselves and were pleased with their progress. Also, be sure and ask them if the famous Apple Cake, complements of Bonnie Mc Elearney, lived up to its reputation!!!

A big “thank you” to Shelley Chappell, the owner of Quilters Connection, for hosting the workshop again this year Shelley always says, “YES!!!” when we ask for her help. Please tell her thank you for all she does when you are in her shop.

We would also like to thank Donna King, Pam Preskitt, and Maxyne Strickland for volunteering to be instructors at the workshop. With so many knowledgeable instructors, each student could get assistance as soon as they needed it – no waiting. These guild members gave generously of their time and talent to help ensure the best workshop possible.

The proceeds of the miniature quilt auction benefit a charity this year. We plan to announce the recipient for this year at the October meeting.

Upcoming Programs

Joan Wilson, 2010-11 VP Programs & Workshops,

[email protected]

November will be our annual Covers for Kids Event. Stations will be set up around the meeting room, each one teaching a different easy-peasy block or top design that you can use later to make some quilts of your own. But on November 4th, you’ll be working on tops that will be donated to Covers for Kids.

Bring along your sewing machine, some neutral thread, and your favorite sewing tools. If you’d rather not lug your machine (or have to dash home to get it), just bring your rotary cutter, ruler and mat so you can help square up blocks or be prepared to help press blocks under construction.

Even without a guest speaker, you’ll have a good time hanging out with fellow quilters. It’s fun to see what gets accomplished in just an hour or two!

On December 2, Dr. Don Locke, the maker of the fabled Supper Quilt (above,) will be here to tell us about the making of the quilt and the experiences he has had since he completed the two and a half year piecing process in 1999.

Founder’s and Silver Thimble

the Guild. If you would like to nominate a fellow Guild member for either the Founder’s or a Silver Thimble award please contact Marla Kelsey.Nominations must be received by October 15th.

Stars in My GardenRaffle Quilt 2010

Photograph by Mel Hauer

The beautiful quilt pictured above is the raffle quilt for 2011of Quilter’s Guild of Dallas Inc. It is entitled Stars in My Garden. Funds raised from ticket sales help support the many activities of the Guild.

The design of this quilt is from a pattern by Nancy Mahoney as printed in FonsandPorter’sLoveofQuilting magazine July/August 2009.

The quilt uses 1930’s reproduction fabrics in primary colors with a white background. While many Guild members donated “Aunt Gracie” style fabrics to the effort, the hard part of the process of producing the raffle quilt, including cutting fabric, piecing for the top, and appliqué were carried out by a committee of Guild Members. This committee includes Nina Hall, Ladonna Holtsclaw, Cleola Green, Janice Bentley, Ellen Lamb, Louise Bloom, and Shirley Lam. The 76” X 94” quilt was beautifully quilted by Richard Larson of Quilting Design Studio. Shirley Lam is now coordinating the sale of raffle tickets for the quilt. We extend our appreciation for a wonderful job to all of these members.

Tickets for the quilt are $1.00 each or six for $5.00.We have included tickets in your member packet which you should receive

sometime in October. Additional tickets will be available at guild meetings each month. You can also email Shirley Lam at [email protected] .

She’s Baaacckkkkk. But this time with a list of volunteer activities that need “doing” and you might find intriguing.

And sporting a ‘do circa 1979. Yes, in college I got an afro. Wild thang. That’s me. I used this particular photo because I was wearing a Santa hat in the only recent photo I could find on my computer. While stores may have Christmas on display already, I can’t do that when it’s still 90+ degrees outside. I do kinda wish I had skinny legs like this version of me. Not having thighs that rub together would be quite a novel experience. But I digress...

As I noted last month, I’ve been helping Marcia Hampton update the upcoming Guild Directory. So, I have a front-row seat for “open” volunteer positions we have available in the Guild.Executive Committee - all reporting to PresidentVice President - Education

oversees the responsibilities of the following Standing Committees: Endowment, Education, Cultural Affairs, and Exhibits.

Historian Like taking candid photos? Scrapbooking? This might be a perfect “fun” job for you. The official job is to keep a record of newspaper articles, photos, programs, and assorted memorabilia of the Guild’s activities. As newsletter editor, I’d love to have more photos to illustrate what the Guild is doing for Members unable to attend meetings.

Parliamentarian As you would expect, this job is primarily about knowing Robert’s Rules of Order, and helping the President conduct Guild business in a proper manner. I’m sure some of you spent time on a PTA Board, and have learned these principles.

Committee ChairmanshipsGrowth & Development (reports to President)

While the board is focused on the present, this committee is responsible for initiating long-term goals and objectives for the growth of the Guild.

Internal Communications Committee (reports to VP-membership) The responsibilities for this committee include: -Coordinator for Friendship Groups -Maintaining Resource List of guild members who provide quilt-related services -Collecting “Sunshine & Shadows” information for members -Checking voice-mail on Guild phone connection At this time, Sue Maze is managing the voice-mail and completed the Resource List for 2010-11, but Shelley is still looking for help with “Sunshine & Shadows” and serving as a contact for Friendship Groups.

Nominating Committee (reports to President & Board) Consists of a chair and three Members-at-Large. These members solicit nominees to take the various Board positions that will be vacated due to term limits or otherwise, then prepare and present the proposed slate of officers to the Guild members at the Annual Meeting in May. At this meeting, additional officer nominations may be made from the floor. The committee provides the slate of candidates to the Newsletter Editor for publication in the May newsletter.

SoapboxContinued from page 10Publicity Committee (reports to President & Board)

Publicity coordinates publicity for Guild-sponsored activities, including programs, workshops and show. They develop/keep current a file of publicity resources, along with names of key people and deadline dates. On a regular basis, they provide information to these media resources. Lastly, they maintain a record/file of all published materials and provide copies of published Guild information to the Guild Historian.

Education (reports to VP-Education) Do you like to demonstrate the process of quilting to people who ask? Would you like to share your love of quilting by being available to local schools, church groups, organizations, or events to provide information about quilting and the Guild? This could be a fun project for a friendship group to take on.

Cultural Affairs (reports to VP-Education) It’s not unusual to find a quilter who is also interested in other aspects of art. If you are one of those people, and would like to represent the Guild as a liaison with other community Arts and Cultural Organizations, this would be a great opportunity for you to enhance the visibility of the Guild in the Arts community.

Exhibits (reports to VP-Education) Why should quilts only be displayed during the annual quilt show? It would be wonderful if there were small-scale exhibitions and displays were mounted on a regular basis. This committee was formed to actively seek exhibition and display opportunities at public and corporate buildings, libraries, museums, art centers, and other suitable space that will bring the art and heritage of quilt making to the public.

Raffle Quilt 2012 (reports to VP-Ways & Means) Every year we have a Quilt Show. Every year, we raffle a quilt at that show. But, as you know, quilts don’t make themselves. (if they did, we wouldn’t have so many UFO’s lurking in our closest and drawers, would we?) As someone who has worked on two raffle quilts, I can tell you that it can be a lot of fun if you team up with a friend or two. Think of it this way - this is a chance to make a beautiful quilt - but not have to pay for the materials or quilting. You don’t get to keep the quilt, but you’ll get the admiration and appreciation of Guild members.

Mini-Quilt Online Auction Coordinator (reports to Mini-Auction Chairmen) This year, the mini-auction committee has an opportunity to take some of the quilts “online” so that people who can’t attend the “live” auction can participate. Mary and Bonnie would like to find someone who can take good photos of the quilts contributed and get them ready for submission to the auction website, as well as write descriptions about the quilt. (It’s hard to see details in a photo...)

Of course if you’d rather start small as just a committee member, take a look at the Organizational Chart (it’ll be the centerfold of the Directory) and read descriptions of other committee responsibilities in the By-laws. Or just talk to one of the Guild Board members. They may have a suggestion that’ll be just your cup of tea!

Frequently Asked Question (FAQs)Whileweencourageyoutoaskifyouhaveaquestionaboutyourentry, pleasereviewthefollowingFAQstoseeifsomeoneelsehas asked the same question previously.

Q: My entry was returned by the post office. I know the deadline was two weeks ago, but can you still accept my entry?

A: No.Onceentriesareclosed, alloftheentries must be reviewed by both theEntriesandJudgingCommitteesfor eligibility and appropriate division/categoryplacement.Then the process of planning quilt placement must begin. We simply cannot start over to accommodate a late entry.

Quilts are eligible for entry up to FIVE (5) years after completion. If you miss the deadline, you may be able to do so next year.

Q: It’s February, and I haven’t gotten anything. Was my quilt accepted?

A. Because the show is not juried, we do not send “acceptance” notification. The only correspondence you will receive is the delivery instructions and placement cards that are to be attached to your delivered entry, telling the volunteers where to hang your quilt or garment. These materials cannot be sent until the entire show layout has been completed. Usually this mailing goes out in mid-February.

If you feel you need confirmation that your entries have been received, please enclose a self-addressed and stamped postcard listing your entries. We can then check off the entry forms received and return the card to you.

Q: I have this entry planned, but I only have a couple of blocks completed. Can I still enter?

A: We require that the TOP be completed at the time of entry.

Since this show is not juried, the entrydoesnothavetobequilted/bound at the time of photography. The photo is for identification purposes and to help with show layout. However, please be REALISTICaboutwhatyoucangetfinished between the entry deadline inJanuaryandtheshowdeliverydeadline.

When someone enters a large quilt but does not get it completed in time for the show, forcing the entry to be withdrawn at the last minute, we end up with a large gap in the show display. This dismays our show visitors.

Q: My quilt won’t be completed when I photograph it, so I don’t know the exact dimensions. Once I quilt something, it usually ends up smaller than I thought. Can I leave the dimensions blank?

A: No.Whenwedoshowlayout, wehave to allow sufficient space for each entry. If you do not know how large your quilt will be, give us your best estimate – preferably on the high side.

Q: You require that a photo accompany the entry. How good does that photo have to be? Can I send an inkjet printout of a picture taken with my digital camera?

A: The main purpose of the photo is to do show layout. We try to plan the groupings so that quilts complement the quilts on either side. Therefore, a photo that is reasonably well focused and has fairly accurate color representation is what makes our layout people happiest. How you produce that photo (printed on an inkjet printer on plain white paper or printed on photo paper by professionals) does not matter to us, as long as we can slide it into a page protector and see it clearly.

Q: I made a crib-sized quilt that I want to enter. It’s not large enough for the pieced or appliqué categories, but I didn’t make it to hang on the wall either. What category does it go in?

A: If it is smaller than 72” on all sides, it qualifies for a “Wall Quilt” category.

Q: (1) I may have published those patterns and taught, but I am NOT a professional quilter.

Q: (2) I won a couple of blue ribbons at the State Fair, but that doesn’t make me a “professional” does it?

Q: (3) I may have gotten juried into (insert name of elite juried quilt showcase such as the Quilt National) but I haven’t won two blue ribbons or had income. Why can’t I compete in Artisan anymore?

A: IfyouhavehadANYincomefromquiltingorwearableart, youAREaprofessional. Same goes for ribbon winners and very elite exhibitions. We view blue ribbon-winning quilts as proof of your mastery of quilting-related skills - thus you need to compete with your peers inthe“Master”categories.Likewise,if your work is of a caliber that gets juried into the very elite shows, it IS professional quality, and should becompetingwithother“Master”works.

Don’t kid yourself into thinking the competitionislessintheArtisandivision. We have had “Best of Show” winnerscomefromthatdivision!

Q: I used to teach and sell patterns several years ago, but it’s been a long time. Can I enter the Artisan division?

A: No.Oncea“Master,”alwaysaMaster.Q. You have a rule that if someone

has had a quilt juried into a “prestigious exhibit” that you must enter in the Masters category. I had a quilt juried into AQS last year. Does that make me a master?

A. Notnecessarily.AQS,IQA,NQAandthe other very large quilt shows usually have categories for amateurs and professionals. While inclusion in the show is certainly an honor, these organizations select a large number of quilts for display.

The exhibits that we refer to are the onesthatareVERYselective;usuallyonly 50 or so quilters are selected for inclusionnationwide/internationally.

Q: I made a quilt that Suzy Professional Quilter entered in a show. The quilt won a ribbon in that show. Since Suzy is a

QGD Online - October 2010 page 17

professional, do I have to enter this quilt in the Master division?

A: In our show, the quilt is categorized bytheMAKER.TheQGDconsidersthe person who made the top to be the “maker.” Therefore, if you made thetopandqualifyasan“Artisan,”thequiltwouldgointoan“Artisan”category.

* Note: If you did not participate in the creation of the quilt you are entering, the quilt may be re-categorized as deemed appropriate by the entries/judging committees.

Q: I have a quilt that I want to enter, but I don’t know what category it should go into. It has both piecing and appliqué and is large enough to fit on a bed, but it is awfully “arty” looking. Can I leave the division and category blank?

A: Youshouldbeabletodeterminewhat division the quilt would go into by carefully reviewing the items that define a “master” and an “artisan.,” or a quilt that should be placed in one of the “Open” categories.

We usually cannot tell much about the quilt by the photos submitted. In other words, we cannot tell whether the quilt is predominantly pieced or predominantly appliqué. Only you know that information.

If you are unsure, please indicate the division/categoryyouthinkisthebest, and attach a note describing the reasons you aren’t sure about the choice.TheEntriesand/orJudgingCommittees will review and make a final decision.

Sometimes, when either of the two committees or the judges themselves feel that a quilt would have a better chance at winning a ribbon in a different category, they will make the change.

Q: I made a quilt using antique blocks that my grandmother made. Since I finished piecing the top and am doing the quilting, can I enter this in a “one person” category?

A: No.Yourgrandmotherparticipatedin the making of the quilt, therefore the quilt would be a two-person entry.

Q: I made a quilt using old blocks I have collected over time. Is that a two-person quilt?

A: Notnecessarily.Ifyoudonotknowwho made the blocks and they were acquired on different occasions, chances are they were constructed bymorethanoneperson.Addingyourself to two or more equals three or more – making it a group or friendship quilt.

Q: I made my very first quilt top! Someone else did the quilting for me. Since it is my very first quilt, can I enter this in the “First Quilt” category?

A: No.TheFirstQuiltcategoryisa“oneperson” category. That means that onepersondidALLoftheworkinvolved in getting it completed.

Q. I’d like to make a quilt for the show. Is there a way to increase my chances of winning a ribbon?

A: Obviously, workmanship and visual impact are the BIGGEST factors in award-winning quilts. However, you can take the number of entrants in a given category into consideration. By far, the largest categories in the show are the Two-Person Large and the Wall Quilt categories in the MastersandArtisandivisions.Thesmallest categories are historically the one-person large quilt categories (PiecedorApplique)intheMastersandArtisanDivisions.

A Few Pet Peeves...Following is a list of the “Pet Peeves” collected from current and former members of the Entries Committee. Somedittoitemsinour“FAQs”list, butbearrepeating.

Entries that arrive missing key ingredients: information on the form, a clear photo, appropriate fees, etc.The majority of the show entries arrive between December 26th and the entries deadline. One of the BIG jobs of the entries committee is to create a massive database thatincludesALLoftheinformationreceivedon an entry form. When someone doesn’t complete the form, the entry goes into a “holding pattern” while we attempt to contact theentranttogetthemissingitems/info.

Incomplete entry forms – particularly when missing the appropriate category. We can seldom discern a lot of information about an entry from the photos submitted or information on the entry form. Give it your best shot. If for some reason we think it was mis-categorized or would do better elsewhere, the committee will make a final determination.

Really AWFUL photos submitted with the entry. We don’t expect photos to be professional quality, but try to avoid sending out-of-focus photos, photos printed on a printer that has run out of an ink color, photos that are taken so far away from the quilt that you can barely see it, photos that are taken indoors in a dark room... Good photos help us choose a placement that will make it look its’ very best.

Receiving an entry shipped from out-of-town that is sent in a beat-up box that barely survived the trip to Dallas. While some shows use new boxes to pack up quilts being shipped back to their owners, we do not. What you send is what you get back. AboxinbadconditionmakesusworryaLOTabout the safety of your quilt on its’ journey home.

Entries shipped from out of town that DO NOT have the requested return address label.Let’s just say this...Entries that will require the most work or effort to get on their way home will be the LASTonestobedealtwith.

People who don’t bother to let us know that their entry will not be finished in time for the show and therefore, needs to be withdrawn – so we don’t know until setup/hanging day. We go to a great deal of trouble to assure adequate wall space to accommodate each quilt. When a quilt doesn’t show up, we are left with an empty spot. Visitors are usually dismayed to find a lot of “holes” in the show they paid to view.
