My Love For Corvettes It was the year 1953 when I was 7 or 8 yrs. old when I fell in love with my first Corvette, we lived on Oak St. next door to M. Wyle Co. where an employee used to drive and park a brand new 1953 Corvette daily. My dream at that time was that someday I would own a Corvette so when I was 17 or 18 yrs. old I bought my first Corvette which was a 1954 which I restored and enjoyed until 1970 when I entered it in the Clutch Artists show at the Masten St. Armory where I sold it in dreams of owning a brand new one. The following Monday I went to Joe Bockman Chevrolet and ordered a new 1970 LT1 convertible which I still own and really enjoy. I also own a 2000 red convertible which I also enjoy. There is nothing like driving a Corvette. My only other dream Corvette is that someday I would love to own a 1957. Mike Gruber

Over the last 20 years I have owned an MGB (not very impressive), a TR6 (nice car, lousy electrics) and a Mazda Miata MX5. The MX5 was a real fine car, fun to drive, pretty decent performance, especially over 4000 rpm. The MX5 performance makes the MGB look silly and the creature comforts afforded by the Mazda made the TR6 feel like an old farm tractor.

But after suffering from Corvette envy for the last year or so I started shopping for a Corvette. I originally wanted a car from the mid-seventies but everything I looked at either had bad paint, bad upholstery or both. Or the car was way out of my budget as I had no intention of going into debt. In May I sold the MX5 and got serious about finding a car.

I am now the latest owner of a 1985 Corvette, purchased last June from Melvin Winkelman of Attica, NY. The odometer shows just about 115,000 miles and my hope is to drive it for another 85,000 miles. We’ll see about that.

The car seems to run just fine and everything works. Well, the cruise control and the AC don’t work. Neither do the door locks or power mirrors. And maybe the heater fan switch might be shot. But other than that, everything works just fine. The engine doesn’t seem to burn oil and starts easily, even one Sunday morning in February when my patio thermometer registered a minus 8 degrees. The four speed manual gear box (3 overdrives, as well) shifts easily and the clutch seems solid. Included with the car were an ’85 owner’s manual, a dealer’s shop manual and the spare tire, jack and jack handle. According to Melvin, the engine had a tune up in April 2015, although I have no way of knowing that for sure.

Melvin also advised the car is equipped with an “ADS Super Chip”, whatever the heck that is. From what I can glean from the internet ads, the super chip adjusts the timing for better performance. Other than a decal on the rear bumper (since removed) I can’t prove the existence of the ADS chip. Incidentally, I use 87 octane gas without any problems to date.

The car does have a conundrum however. The owner’s manual and the shop manual both indicate the engine is the L98 5.7 L, tuned port fuel injected V8. But there is an aluminum plate attached to the throttle body that indicates the engine is an “LT1”. The same designation is attached to the rear bumper. From what I can determine, there was an LT1 engine offered in the early ‘70’s, a carbureted monster producing about 370 HP. Then Chevy introduced another LT1 engine in 1992, rated at 300 HP, compared to the L98’s 250 HP. So I’m at a loss to explain the nameplate on the engine and the bumper badge. Looking at a photo of the ’92 LT1 engine, there is a similar plate attached to that throttle body and appears to have the same size, shape and screw pattern. So I suppose someone could have replaced a lost “L98” plate with the “LT1” plate. But why the bumper badge?

After driving the car about a thousand miles to date, I’m quite pleased with it. For the money paid, I think it delivers a lot of bang for the buck.

Important Production Dates for 2016 and 2017 Corvette

It’s hard to believe that production of the 2016 Corvette will be ending in just a few months. Seems like we were

just at the NCM for last year’s bash where all the great updates and specials editions like the Z06 C7.R Edition were

announced. But time flies and model years come to an end. Thanks to our friend Rick ‘Corvette’ Conti, we have

some important production-related dates for the 2016/2017 Corvettes.

Production of the 2016 Corvettes will end on June 24th. That means your last opportunity to order a 2016 Corvette

will come with the final order cycle on May 12th. Get with your dealer sooner rather than later and if you’ve been

getting the run-around from a smaller dealerships with limited inventory, you might want to take a look at the

larger volume dealers who will have allocation and inventory right up to the very end of production.

Production of the 2017 Corvette Stingray will start on June 24th while the 2017 Z06 will start on September 5th.

Yes, 2016 and 2017 Corvette production will be a ending and starting the same day which sort of implies no major

tooling changes will be necessary for the 2017s Corvette Stingrays. However, it is interesting that GM is staggering

the start of the 2017 Z06 until September 5th so that means nearly two and a half months without Z06 production.

Let’s hope that downtime will be put to good use!

The first order cycle for the 2017 Corvette Stingray will be May 26th while the first order cycle for the 2017

Corvette Z06 will start on July 28th.

GM will be showing off the changes for the 2017 Corvette Stingray and Z06 at the annual National Corvette

Museum Bash event, now sponsored by Michelin. The 2017 Corvettes will be on display beginning on Thursday,

April 28 and the annual “What’s New with Corvette” seminar will be held the following morning at 10 am CT on

Friday, April 29th.

Normally, the order guides are available just after the bash but pricing always seems to lag into June. As GM has

raised pricing every single year of the C7’s production, bargain hunters might consider looking at picking up a 2016

Corvette which are always discounted by the large volume dealers, especially at the end of the model year.

“IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ALL NCCC MEMBERS”

I believe this is the first email sent by the President to every member we have on file in the NCCC database. It is very important that every member is aware of a new appointment to be made at the upcoming Governors meeting in St. Louis on April 23rd, 2016. I will be accepting applications for the position of Director of Charity until April 15th, 2016. The application can be found under “Appointed Officers” on the NCCC Web site.

Also at this meeting in April a vote will be taken to pick one of three charities submitted to the Governors for approval. The three charities are: Shriners Children’s Hospital, St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and Lions Club International. All three charities have been reviewed by the Elected Board of NCCC and submitted for the Governors approval. Almost three quarters of NCCC Governors do not attend Governor Meetings. Over 90% of NCCC members don’t either. If they did I don’t know where they would all sit. However, I felt NCCC needs everyone’s opinion on this. I encourage you to contact your club Governor with the charity you would like to see NCCC support with our raffle program to win a certificate for a new Corvette or cash if the winner chooses. Your club Governor can inform the Regional Executive as to how your club wants to vote if they cannot attend. [The NCCC governor for Corvettes of Buffalo is Jim Brett. He can be reached at [email protected] or 716-684-9364.] Once a charity is approved and a Director of Charity is appointed, tickets will be printed and sold to members and the general public to raise funds to help the organization picked by the NCCC Governors. NCCC plans to attend Bloomington Gold Show, Carlisle Corvette Show, and Funfest in Effingham Illinois to sell tickets. Also NCCC members can sign out tickets to sell to their clubs, family, and friends. The new ticket program will be $50 tickets with a total of 2000 tickets. All tickets and money will be accounted for going forward. This program will raise $100,000.00, enough to provide a certificate for a new Corvette and support the new charity. One issue NCCC has is the database only contains 54% of email addresses for our members. Please share this information with all your club members who we may not have an email address for. Also have your club Governor check your club’s membership database to ensure NCCC has your correct address and email. I felt it was important to contact every member we could through the NCCC email system with this information. It is the way of the future as NCCC moves more and more into the 21st Century. Thank you all in advance for your support of a charity for NCCC, your support of NCCC, and for being members of this great organization of Corvette owners. There are many things in life that are good, but they don’t get much better than NCCC and all its members. See you all someplace in the future. Dave Heinemann

Ron Fellows Performance Driving School - Spring Mountain, NV

On February 28, 2016 the Corvettes of Buffalo was well represented at the Ron Fellows Performance Driving

School at Spring Mountain near Pahrump, Nevada. The eight of us arrived and were greeted by Kenny

Northrup, a Spring Mountain school instructor with local connections to the Buffalo area. Kenny and a few

other instructors offered to take us on an “Off Road” 4-wheeler adventure into the Spring Mountains. What an

awesome experience to run through the rough desert trails at 40-50 mph and climb up through the canyons, and

ride the edges of ridges with deep drop-offs on both sides! They said that horses are frequently seen on the trails

along with other critters such as mountain lions, mule deer, and mountain sheep but we did not see any because

we were just hanging on and enjoying the ride! After 2+ hours in the mountains the dirt and dust was covering

us from head to toe. It was dark when we returned to the resort and the hot shower and dinner hit the spot!

In the morning, we learned they had two classes running at the same time. Our class had 12 Students and it

looked like the other class was slightly larger. They trained on the 2.2 mile long North/South track and we

trained on the West track which is 1.5 miles long. Spring Mountain had over 100 C7 Corvettes on site, with a

mixture of Z06 and Z51 Stingrays in all colors.

Day 1 in School – was about 50/50 class room training and track time. The instructors covered all the safety

procedures along with all the basic features and controls of the C7. After covering the C7 introduction, seat

settings, mode settings, traction control, and active handling they spent much time on ABS braking and accident

avoidance. All good stuff!

Then on the track we learned “visual scanning” on a serpentine course, “braking techniques”, and shifting

exercises. After lunch we did the track introduction to learn the layout, turning cone locations and apex cone

points.

Then back in the classroom we learned the “8” steps to cornering. – All the previous training started to come

together within the “8” steps to corning!

Then we went back on the track (with helmet secured) to use the “8” corning steps, followed by more training

on the Oval dry track and wet skid pad to learn about weather mode. That was fun!

Day 2 in School – started with more classroom training. They reviewed much of the “8” steps of cornering,

talked about launch mode techniques, use of the PDR system (performance data recorder), how to customize

mode settings and more. Some very cool stuff!

Then out on the track to practice what we learned and begin to push the speed to increase our confidence levels

driving the C7. I did use my PDR recorder to view the statistics of each lap on Day 2 and could go back to see

exactly what I did or didn’t do on the track. This works great!

We did four track sessions during day 2 with one as a passenger while the instructor was driving at his track

speeds. Very cool and helpful to see exactly where he positioned the C7 in the lanes to get higher speeds.

The last two afternoon track sessions were lead & follow the instructor at your comfort level speeds. In other

words, go as fast as you can without crashing off the track! By this time my confidence level at the turns and

straight away was significantly better than in Day 1 and I pushed it over 100 mph on the straight away and up to

65 mph through some turns! It was great and I wanted to run more but our day was winding down.

11

CORVETTES of BUFFALO

Then back to the classroom and we reviewed what we learned and how we did.

The last exercise was a demo of the “Launch Mode” by the instructors using a Z06 7-speed manual and a C7

Stingray 8-speed paddle. Unfortunately, we did not get to try the launch mode but did learn how to use it.

Then back in the classroom for the final questions & comments from the students and instructors.

In closing, our overall experience at the Spring Mountain Resort was excellent! Meals and rooms were great,

and the clubhouse, training facilities were like new and very nice. They did a good job involving our spouses as

passengers in the instructor’s Corvettes during track training, all eight of us attended the classroom sessions and

hospitality was great during breakfast and lunch at the clubhouse. We all would recommend this training

experience to all Corvette owners!

Our Class included COB’ers: Pete and Rose Ricigliano, Frank and Marianne Pastore, Dave and Kathy Huber,

and Skip & Maureen Polowy.

1964 Corvette Restoration----Update #4

Last month we fitted and glued the new front clip to the body. The next step was to connect the body to the new clip with the material that both are made of. This comprises of fiberglass matting cloth and resin mixed with hardener. We now need to get both front clip and body ready, for a V slot to be ground in both sections, where the fiberglass matting will set in place to mate both pieces. We start by cutting fiberglass matting sheets to fit in the V channel and the resin is mixed with the hardener. This part of the job isn't fun, because if you get the resin on your skin it is very hard to get it off. I use rubber deposable gloves to keep my hands clean. Another problem is to know how much hardener to mix into the resin so it doesn't harden to fast or to slow. I start this process by brushing the resin in the V slot and add a cut piece of fiberglass mat and saturate it with resin and add another layer of mat and saturate it until the V slot is filled. The brush I use to put the resin on is also used to push all the air bubbles that cause weak spots in the top surface and cause problems. Any holes or damage in the body must be repaired in this manner, so when the sun heats the top surface no pop outs will show up under the new paint job. When the resin hardens, it is time to remove, and hand work the repaired area with difference grits of sand paper starting with coarse to a finer grit. This is the messy part of the job that I call a pain in the glass, because when the dust gets on your skin it makes you itch. This part of the project will take a long time, because it is mostly all hand work caused by the curves in the car body. Pete Ricigliano

My Corvette Story This write up and photos were requested by Eckler's Corvette, a large Corvette aftermarket supplier for

possible publication. ..... Gene C.

Back in time when I was starting Jr. High one day after practicing in gym, I walked outside the rear door of that school which was only two houses away from my parents and gazed upon a white sports car that seemed so different than the foreign cars of that era. Walking up to that car, I read the side nameplate on the front fender that had Chevrolet spelled out and as I continued to walk around that beautiful white masterpiece, I yelled out to a passing friend "this must be the new Corvette"! I couldn't take my eyes off of her from the 'chicken-wire mesh-grilles' over those sloped headlights, that red interior and those tail lights. My whole being captured every detail of that sports car, as I asked my friend Gary, "hey, who owns this car ?" He stated it was the librarian's car (she was a spinster of the time). Wow, I just memorized every detail of that 'white piece of art-on-wheels'. Fast forward, after learning how to drive on various hot cars of the time that my senior buddies owned, I chummed around with a fellow that owned a brand new 1962 Fuelie Vette that I regularly detailed. Later during the day we used to hang around the coffee shop on Pine Ave. and then go out racing. Seems as though he never put the top up on that Fuelie. Well after marking the 1/4 mile and lining up those power pack Chevy's, J2 Olds', Mercs' and OHV hopped-up Fords, I asked him if I should get out of the Vette for less weight. He just glanced over and stated "a 130 lbs. wouldn't bother my Vette's performance". So riding shot-gun, I grabbed the bar at the dash and off the line we'd go shutting down every one of them. Seems like nothing could touch us on that country 1/4 mile strip road. The fact that cops were watching and blocking the road in the middle of the night, they would slowly take off after we rapped-up the racing. Again fast forward, after running a body shop and going on to engineering school, I repaired a lot of Vettes and other muscle cars gaining a lot of respect and knowledge for automobiles. As the new cars of the 60's mid-years were presented by GM. I then owned a '57 Ford convertible. and decided to get a new red on red Vette roadster with a white top. Well that carbureted 327 4speed posi certainly gave me a lot of fun and 'great dates'. However, priorities in the mid 60's prevented me from totally fulfilling my passion with that great American sports car, and as marriage and later a family with need to finish engineering school were in front of me, the Vette had to go. Fast forward again, my friend Chris in the mid 70's would often encourage me to buy a mid-year Vette, since I would always bring up fast cars in conversation. Well we found a 1967 Roadster that was a high horse small block L79 4 speed with a 3.70 posi and I bought it and played with it after getting it road ready, then parked it since at the time it didn't impress me, as being 'the one'. Later on, I went to Bob McDorman's Chevrolet in Canal Winchester, OH where they had the public display of Vettes for sale and bought a 327/365hp 4-speed saddle tan iridescent Coupe. A little later on I found a Sebring silver '63 S/W Fuelie with matching numbers, a posi 4:11, power windowed car and so I proceeded to restore that car thru the years to perfection. As that was not enough, I bought a tri-power '67 red on red white top Roadster 427/435hp 4-speed with the auxiliary hardtop. Well now, after sitting for 40 years (the '67 Vette that Chris encouraged me to buy) the L79 Silver Pearl Roadster is 'coming alive' in a total restoration' and I now have decided since the license plate on the Sebring Silver '63 reads "63FUELIE" that the '67 Vette in restoration will read "BOOKEND". To finish the rest of the story, there will be a sequel to all the above in " Vette Chronicles" that will be summarized in a book that I will be publishing. Save-the-wave, Gene Colucci
