1 Christopher Columbus landed in the New world (the Americas) in 1492 in Bahamas. This started an exchange of trade between the new world (the Americas) and the old world (Europe, Africa, and Asia). This exchange is called the Columbian Exchange. 1 important part of the Columbian Exchange was the trade of food, plants, and crops. > Old World (Europe) to the New World (Americas): Coffee Peaches Sugar Wheat > New World (Americas) to the Old World (Europe): Cocoa Corn Potatoes Peppers Tomatoes « The Spanish and Portuguese discovered these foods and brought them back to Europe, starting the trade.

• These new foods from the Old World  changed farming in the New World.• They created plantations to mass produce the crops. For the plantations 

they needed people to work and grow the crops. > First they used the native people, but many got sick from diseases 

(smallpox, flu, measles, and typhoid fever) brought from the Old World to the New World in the Columbian Exchange. – Between 50% to 75% of the population of some native tribes lost 

their lives to these diseases.• They needed a new labor source. They brought people from Africa over to 

work as slave labor on the plantations.• Europeans also brought animals to the new world.

– It was culture changing. It allowed native people to travel further and faster
