Welcome to the latest issue of the BUFORAJournal.

Darwinism and Aliens

UFOS are a strange and varied phenomenonwhich comes in many guises. lf we ignore allthe cases which are definite or probablemisidentifications and the hoaxes a small hardcore of unexplained cases remain. This hardcore of unexplained can be roughly split intotwo groups. These are, firstly, strange objectsseen at a distance, and the alienabduclion/contactee reports.

I believe that these are two differentphenomena and both exist. lf we accept thedeUnltion of a UFO as being something that awitness could not identify and felt sufficientlystrange that they reported it, then clearlyUFOS exist. BUFORA, the MOD and thePolice continue to receive reports frompuzzled witnesses. lt does not matter withthis definition if a report can be subsequentlyexplained as something mundane, theimportanl thing is that the witness could notidentify it before they made the report - it is aUFO.

I have lumped Alien Abduction reports andContactee reports together as I think there isinsufficient evidence to classity them asdifferent from each other.

ln Alien Abduction witnesses say that they aretaken aboard some form of craft against theirwill. Frequently they report that parts or mostof the memory of their experience has beenblocked in some way. Contactees, on theother hand, report that they have been invited

aboard and voluntarily entered some form ofcraft.

But if whatever is lhe controlling force inAlien Abduction is so powerful at mindcontrol, could not the same force 'will'Contactees to enter their craft. Or areContactees just Abductees that have hadthe memory of being taken against their willerased or replac€d with a memory of goingwillingly. To differentiate these into differentclassifications is attempting to force humanmotivations onto a non-human phenome-non.

On the same basis that the UFOphenomenon exists because people reportthem, so clearly the Alien Abduction/Contactee phenomenon exists bgcausepeople report it. lt is perhaps unfortunatethat the Alien Abduction/Contactee phenom-enon makes up probably less than 5% ofraw UFO reports, yet gets 95% of thepublicity.

I believe that the vast majority of witnessesreport kuthfully to the best of their abilltywhat happened to them. I do, however, reserve the right to disagree with them onany conclusions they draw.

One popular idea amongst both witnessesand UFO researchers is that the Aliensinvolved are spac€ travelling extraterrestrials.I think that there is little evidence thatsupports such a view, and the evidencepresented can also be used to supportalternative hypotheses. For the sake of theargument that follows I will assume that theAliens are physical beings. I have toacknowledge that non-physical beings, e.g.energies, amongst other explanations havebeen put forward. Also, in the past it hasbeen proposed that all Abductees/Contacteesmust be in some way mentally unbalanced, which has been disregarded for the sake ofthis argument.

I have had a section of my website for severalyears which tries to show that much of theevidence put forward to account for Aliens asextraterrestrials could also be used to make acase for Aliens being time travellers.

One of the major featurcs of Abductionphenomena is the missing time element. ln amany cases the witness has a rnissing periodof time they cannot account for. However, there are a few cases wheae the witness hasgained time. For exampie, they will betravelling along a road, pass some pointwhere they note the time and then tlvo orthree minutes later appear to be many milesup the road.

If we propose that whatever is behind theAlien Abduction phenomena is extraterrestrialthen they would have needed to conquer bothlong distance space flight and manipulatingtime. However, if they are time travellers theywould have only needed to master oneseemingly impossible task - the manipulationof time.

Who are these time lords? Possibly peoplefrom our future. lt used to be thought that wewere desc€nded from Neanderthals. Despiteit appearing that some UFO researchers havelots of Neanderihal genes (!), recent researchhas shown that both Neanderthals andmodem humans are descended separately

from a common ancestor called HomoErectus.

Neanderthals were strong, muscular and welladapted to hunting, but they becamereplaced by the brainier modern humans andappeared to die out around 30,000 yearsago. ln turn, willwe be replaced by a smallerless muscular species which relies evenmore on its brain power? The small greyAliens made famous by Whitley Streiber andoften described by Abductees could be theultimate human evolutionary form.

ln modern humans the brain utilises around25% of all the energy produc€d by the body, yet it comprises atound 2yo of the body bymass. This implies that 75% of the body'senergy is used elsewhere, for example inmuscles. But if our advanced creature relieson its brain power rather than brawn, thenmost of its muscle mass is surplus torequirements. So a logical evolutionaryadvance would be to reduce the amount ofmuscle, thereby reducing the amount ofenergy it requires.

The source of energy for humans is food.Scientists widely predict that with anincreasing world population and growth ofdesert areas because of global warming, inthe future there may be more wide spreadfood shortages. Clearly any species that hasa reduced food requirement will be at anevolutionary advantage.

Abductees repod that the Aliens they seehave reduced-sized mouths and have notbeen seen to eat. This is consistent with theproposition that humans might evolve into aspecies with low energy requirement.Counting against the argument that Aliensare time travellers is the consideration thatprovision of food is a major consideration forlong distance space travel. Any species thathad a low food requirement would also be atan advantage for long-range spaceexploration.

Bryan Sykes in his book, "The SevenDaughters of Eve," details studies of human

mitochondrial DNA to trace human origins.Mitochondria are small structures found withinthe cells of eukaryotic organisms (whichinclude humans) and are responsible forreleasing energy to power the cell. Althoughmost of the DNA in the cell is found in thenucleus mitochondrial also have a small pieceof DNA of lheir own. Because of the waymitochondria pass from one generation to thenext they are very useful in tEcing humanorigins. Could these time t.avellers becollecting DNA from witnesses and looking atsome form of global family history?

And why now? ft,4itochondrial DNA fromdifferent parts of the world has characteristicsignatures, tiny mutations. By looking at themutalions it is possible to work out howdifferent groups of people have migrated overthe years. But with the increase in mobility ofpeople around the world these geneticmarkers are all becoming mixed together. lna couple of generations jt will be impossible towork out where different people originated. So the reason why now is that it has to be nowor never.

Other researchers have suggested that theseAliens are collecting human genes to boosttheir own impoverished genes. Human genesare unlikely to be any good to a life form fromanother planet, but could be of use to boostthe gene pool of other people from this planet.ln his book 'Adam's Curse" Bryan Sykespresents evidence that the human gene poolis shrinking. Most noticeable is thedestruction of the Y chromosome, the one thatmakes humans into men.

The ultimate conclusion of this will be thedisappearance of the Y chromosome andtherefore the elimination of men at somefuture point in the Eadh's history. As a resulteither humans will die out or the female of thespecies must adapt to be able to reproduce inthe absence of males. This is the process ofcloning, making identical copies of oneindividual. How many times have abducteewitnesses said that the beings theyencountered were all identical as if they wereclones?

Again the current method of reproduction oIhumans uses a lot of energy - notjust at theconception stage- So, cloning would bemore efficient for a low energy species.,which is also consistent with the line ofargument developed above.

But producing clones of organisms can overtime produce its own problems. lvlanyproblems affecting a mother seem to beamplified in her daughters. This brings usback to what some of the Abductionresearchers have been saying about Alienscollecting DNA samples to boost their ownflagging DNA pool. The Aliens are visitorsfiom a dying planet, but that planet is our

As an aside, it is often stated that Alenscommunicate with each other and withwitnesses using telepathy. ln BI.JFORA'Spublication "UFOS and the PSI lnterface" l

discussed how remote viewing and hypnoticregression sessions could be influenced bythe mere presence of somebody in the room'in the know'. As our brains and nervoussystem work by sending small electricalimpulses they also generate smallelectromagnetic signals which might bepicked up by an external sensor. lt ispossible that somebody whose brain is

tuned to the same signal as you could pickup parts of the messages sent out by yourbrain. Not supernatural, but a purelyphysical process. Because the signals areweak, only fragments of information mightget across, hence the unreliability and lackof reproducibility of telepathy.

lf the 'wavelength' of the signal you transmitis controlled genetically then the peoplemost likely to be able to receive your signalwill be close family members especiallyidentical twins. The ability of one twin toknow what the other is thinking is legendary. And what are clones? Nothing but multipletwins!

Whilst on the subjects of genetics andbiochemistry it would be worth mentioning acouple of other issues. Some Abductees

Page 6: New Bufora Journalbufora.org.uk/documents/NewBUFORAJournalNo.15Apr2005...UFOs,Interference & Crop Circles Darwin and Aliens Rendlesham Visit New Bufora Journal ISSN 1476 - 5314 April

mention that either they have been shownbabies or embryos said to be human/Alienhybrids or even had such hybrids implanted intheir wombs. lf the Aliens came from adifFerent planet from us it is unlikely that theirbiochemistry would be compatible with ours.

There are complex but very valid physical andchemical reasons why any life form weencounter almost certainly will be carbon-based, like life on Earth. lt is even likely thatthey will have some form of protein likematerial and nuclelc acids. But howcompatible these relatively simple buildingbocks of life would be wrh our owr rs

debatable And for any sort of hybrid io haveany chance of sutuival the biochemistry of thetwo parents has to be very compatible. Thebest chance al compatibility is if both parentspecles have evolved from a commonancestor, however far back in history. This ismost likely to occur if they both originate frornthe same planet.

We are able to produce hybrids on Earth. Themost wide y-known hybrd is the mule, whichis produced by r.ating a horse and a donkey. This ls possible because donkeys and horsesare very c osely related. Bul mules are sterile. The reason rnules are sterile is becausehorses have two more chromosomes thandonkeys. The mule has an inbetween numberbut its cells get confused when they try tomake eggs or sperm, and fail.

Consider now humans and their closest livingrelative, the chimpanzee. Chimps have onemore pair of chromosomes than humans. lf itwere possible to mate a human and a chimpthe offspring is likely to be sterile for similarreasons to mules. There is little point inmaking a hybrid which is sterile if you aredoing it to boost your genetic pool. Chimpsand humans share over 99% of their DNA incommon. Therefore, lF Aliens are cominghere and lF they are producing hybrids withhumans they must a great deal closer tohumans in biological terms than even thechimp.

Going back to Neanderthals and mitochondrial

DNA; as far as we know Neanderthals arecloser to modern humans than chimps are. lthas been possible to extract a few samplesof mitochondrial DNA from Neandefthalremains. From comparing this with the DNAof modern humans it appears thatinterbreedjng between the two humanspecies did not occur. lt is not clear if thiswas for cultural reasons or biologicalreasons. But if for biological reasons, itsuggests that lF Aliens are making hybridswith

'_umans they must be even croser in

biological make up than Neanderthals. lf thisscenario is correct what is more iikely to be abiologlcal maich, somebody from your ownplanet or sornebody who evolved completelyindependently the other s de of the Galaxy?

So, in summary, the Alien Abductionphenomenon may noi be Alien (at least in thesense of extraterreskial) and may not involvethe witness being physically removed fromtheir existing location.

| 'e"rerbe-. many yea's ago pu-cl.asirg aset of slides abolt UFOS from Lionel Beer. I

believe that the slides had originally beenproduced in France, but fortunately Lionelhad the accornpanying notes translated intoEng ish. One of the sl.des relared to a seriesof small human-like skeletons that werefound in a cave, which I belreve was insouthern China, sometime around the 1920s.The notes went on to speculate that the smallbeings might have been space beings.

Now, alien, of course, really meanssomething in the wrong place or the wrongtime. About two years ago archaeologistsfound the remains of a small human ancestoron the lndonesian island of Flores. Theycalled this small being Homo floresiensis.Could these be similar to the alleged spacebeings found in China allthose years ago?

So perhaps, at least in some cases, there istruth in some of the old folk tales. Someaspects of the Abduction phenomenon arevery strange, but we should be careful aboutdiscarding anything out of hand.

UFO Reports, Crop Circles, andAlignments

- The Energy Connection?Geoff Falla

Some UFO reports can, it seems, be linkedwith the locations of crop circle incidents. There are occasional reports of apparentclose proximity UFO incidenls when effects onvehicles are experienced, and it is thesereports which are found to have someconcentration in t e same areas where manyof the crop circle events have also beendiscovered.

There are many hundreds of such interferenceeffect cases reco.ded in Britain and aroundthe world, with some acceptance that this is aphenomenon worthy of serious attention, already recognized by scientists who in a fewcases have taken time to examine theevidence.

The reality of these events has beenhrghlighted by the askonomer and sciencewriter Nigel Henbest. author of The MysteriousUniverse.(l) ln a section dealing with thesubject of UFOS, he explains "- and of coursethere is a widely reported ability to stop carengines to be considered. Such evidencedoes seem to indicate that at least someUFOs are actually physical objects."

Although the general public may not be fullyaware of these vehicle effect cases, the factthat there are a large number of theseincidents, and reported from many othercountries, does greatly strengihen the case forthe genuine nature of at least this particulartype of reported UFO incident.

The genuine nature of the crop circlepheoomenon-has also been the subject ofmuch debate. Although many of the reportedevents have been found to be hoaxes, thereare many features of crop circles, withassociated effects in some cases, whichremain unexplained. Some of theseunexplained features are well known, including

the complex swirl patterns, combined withno evidence of any damage to the crop, andreports of no ground marks - even in softground in some incidents. There have alsobeen reports of strange effects, includingevidence of heating and magnetic effects, and reported malfunctions of equipmentwithin the crop patterns - effects which arenot found when compared with thesuffounding areas- ln some cases therehave also been reports of strange luminousphenomena in the same areas, and therenow seem to be some indications of definitelinks with the vehicle interference effectcases in the same areas which have alsoseen a concentration of the crop circleevents.

It is possable to identify several reasons forbelieving that there is some definite linkbetween the interference effect cases andthe crop circle formations. These reasonsare based on the locations of the events, synchronicity, and reported characteristics.

Apart from there being some concentrationof the interference effect cases in theadjoining counties of Wiltshire andHampshire - the same counties where mostof the crop circle formations have beenreported, there is also the flnding that half ofthe intederence effect cases in these twocounties have come from the Warminsterand Winchester areas. These are again theareas where many of the crop circleincidents have been found. The earliest ofthe interference effect cases to be noted inHampshire and Wiltshire came from theWestbury area in Wiltshire, just to the northof Warminster, in August 1965. The flrst oflhe crop circle events to come to publicattention in ihese two colniies was locatedin exactly the same area near Weslbury, in1980. (2) The two locations of Warminsterand Winchester have been recognized byinvestigators as being important in thedevelopment of the crop circle phenomenon, particularly near Warminster in the earlieryears, and more recently also in theWinchester area-

Page 8: New Bufora Journalbufora.org.uk/documents/NewBUFORAJournalNo.15Apr2005...UFOs,Interference & Crop Circles Darwin and Aliens Rendlesham Visit New Bufora Journal ISSN 1476 - 5314 April

New Bufora Joumal - Issue l5 - April 2005

A more direct correlation is that in severalcases there are also vehicle interferenceeffect reports which have been found toactually coincide with the appearance of cropcircle patterns, including reported UFOsightings in close proximity to the crop circleevents. Vehicle interference effect casescoinciding with the appearance of crop circlesinclude a case at Winchester in 1980, andAlton Barnes jn Wiltshirc in July 1990. ln July1985 the reported sightjng of a brilliantly litobject hovering in the air near Winchester washighlighted by researcher Colin Andrews. Thelocation was found to be aligned with twopattetns of crop circles which were discovereda few hours later, near Goodworth Clatfordand Alresford. (3)

The last of the reasons which appear toconfirm some definite link is that severalcharacieristics reported in these incidentsseem to be common to both types of event -lhe intederence effect and crop circleincidents. These characteristics includesound, heating effects, vibration, magneticeffects. and repoded effecls on batteries.

Similar characteristics are found in other UFOreports, but in the following summary theinterference effect examples are used, asoutlined previously.

Sound.

Descriptions of sound noted during vehicleinterierence effect incidents are found in about'15 per cent of these cases. A significantproportion of the repods also describe objectsas being apparently seen on:the ground. lnthese cases sound is described rather morefrequently. A small proportion of cases notethe silence of the object seen, but in themajority of cases where sound of some kindhas been repoded this is mostl) described asa humming or sometimes a buz2ing noise.

Although the number of interference effectcases in the counties of Wiltshire andHampshire is not large, having a total of 14cases, it does appear to be significant when

compared with other counties, and sound isdescribed in rather more than half of thereported incidents. This js a higher proportionthan is found when looking at interferencecases in general, and in most cases it isagain noted lo be a humming or buzzingsound.

ln the 1980 case at Winchester, Hampshire,a humming sound was described asaccompanying the sighting of a grey objectwhich appeared to land. There were vehicleengine failures, and a crop circle was foundat the site. (4) At Alton Barnes in Wrltshire, :nJuly 1990, an overnight heavy buzzing soundwas followed by vehicle engine problems, with apparently dead batteries, and thediscovery of a large formation of crop circlesnearby. (5)

There is also the report of a Leicestershirefarm worker who recalled seeing, as far backas 1947, the forming of a crop circle with foursmall circles around it. He described theevent as being accompanied by a genfle humor buzzing sound, which became more highpitched when the circles had formed afterabout three minutes. (6)

Heatinq Effects.

Heating effects, sometimes assocjated withstrange beams of light, have been reported jn

a number of vehicle interference effectexperiences. Descriptions of apparent effectson the surrounding area are also noted insome cases, and in several of the Wiltshireand Hampshire incidents.

Waves of hot and cold air were noted in thefirst reported Wiltshire case involving vehicleeffects, in August 1965 near Westbury, associated with the sighting of two spheres oflight which were changing colour. (7)

ln another case, in 1967, also nearWarminster, the interior of the car suddenlybecame very hot when a glowing white discappeared.(8)

Page 9: New Bufora Journalbufora.org.uk/documents/NewBUFORAJournalNo.15Apr2005...UFOs,Interference & Crop Circles Darwin and Aliens Rendlesham Visit New Bufora Journal ISSN 1476 - 5314 April

Neu, Bufora Joumal - Issue 15 - April 2005

ln one of the strangest incidents, betweenAvon and Sopley in Hampshire in November1967, and involving two vehicles, the sightingof a large luminous egg-shaped object wasaccompanied by a humming sound, andapparent scorching of the roadside vegetation. Some melting of the road surface was alsonoticed, with other strange effects.(9)

It is thought possible that microwave heatingmay be the most likely cause of these effects.('10) l\,4icrowave radiation has also beenidentified as being the probable cause ofheating effects noted in crop circle casesincluding lhe softening at the base of cropstalks, which allows bending without the stalksbeing broken.

ln crop circle formations reported from othercountries, there is the case from Tully inQueensland, Australia, where in January 1966stem heating effects were also noied -including the bending of stalks below thewater surface of the marshy area where theevent was seen. The incident included thesighting of a bluish-grey disc which was seenrising quickly into the sky from lhe marsh. Aspiral whirl patrern was found, while lhe arrwas described as smelling sulphurous, andseemed to be electrically charged after theincident. (11)

Vibration.

The description of aerial vibrations, and ofvehicles being shaken is noted in several ofthe interference effect cases, including anincident at Warminster in September'1965. lnthis case the car headlights flickered, while awhining and crackling sound accompanied theshaking effect. (12) ln two cases nearWinchester in 1976 the vehicle was describedas be.'rg shaken when an unknowa luminousobject was seen in the sky in both incidents.ln one case clothes were also noted asbecoming very hot, with the car engine thenrestarting by itself, and the lights found io bemuch brighter than normal. (13)

in the case of metal objects, vibration effects

can be caused by strong variations in themagnetic field.

A case in Warwickshire in 1965 describedthe experience of a family in a caravan.During the night many coloured lights hadbeen seen in the sky, with the caravanshaken by vibrations. ln the morning a largecircle was found, covered with a greypowder. The area included an orchard, where grafted cuttings were all found tohave been removed fiom the trees.

An incident at Winterbourne Monkton,Wiltshire. in June 1996 described thesighting of a spinning object with colouredlights, also accompanied by strangevibrations and a buzzing noise, with theobject then described as sending whitebeams of light down towads the groundseveral times. On the same night a complexdouble helix shaped crop pattern was foundto have been formed nearby, close to theancient stone circle at Avebury.

Maqnetic Effects.

Repoded effects on watches and oncompasses are noted in a signifacantnumber of interference effect experiences, and amount to about ten per cent of thesecases. l\,4agnetic effects are also noted assomelmes affecling lhe vehicle itself, orother equipment. There is sometimes apungent or sharp smell described in thesereports. When metal objects becomemagnetized, picking up an electric charge, asmell can be the result of an electricdischarge. The effects of apparent electricaldischarge are also reported to be associatedwiih the heating of slalks in crop circleformations.

ln the experience described at Warminsierin August 1965. when a motorcycle enginefailed as two spheres of light were seen, andwaves of hot and cold air were felt. bothwitnesses reported that their watchesstopped at the same time. The Hampshirecase reported from Winchester in November

Page 10: New Bufora Journalbufora.org.uk/documents/NewBUFORAJournalNo.15Apr2005...UFOs,Interference & Crop Circles Darwin and Aliens Rendlesham Visit New Bufora Journal ISSN 1476 - 5314 April

1976, when an orange cigar-shaped objectwas seen coming close to the vehicle, alsoproduc€d appa.ent heating and an effect onthe drive/s watch -it was noted that the watchstarted to gain time considerably after theincident. Watches have been reported to beaffected in other UFO incidents, and whentaken for repair can be found to have beensubjected to a strong magnetic current.

Strange magnetic effects have also beenreported in crop circle formations, withcompasses deviating considerably or sp,nningwithin the affected area. One example, in theinvestigation of a crop circle pattern atEeckhampton, Wiltshire, in '1995 showed wildoscillations of a compass, and the indicationof a changing polarity.

lnterference effect cases involving reportedUFO sightings have also included compasseffects. ln many reports involving aircraft acompass variation has been noted at thesame time, also with some cases of sptnningcompasses unti' the object has moved awayand lhe situation has retuned to normal.

Batterv Effects.

lntederence effect experiences reported fromWiltshire and Hampshire seem to jnclude a

higher proportion of unexplainedcharacteristics than in similar caseselsewherc- Reports of battery failuresassociated with UFO repods are uncommon, but are found in two of the cases in Wiltshireand Hampshire, and can also be linked withwhat has been reported in.some of the cropcircle incidents.

ln the November 1967 interference effectincident in Hampshire, involving Nvo vehicles -a car and a diesel engined lorry when aluminous egg-shaped object was seen, producing evident heatang effects, the recentlyfitted battery of the lorry was found to be deadwhen it was examined later. The torch carriedby the car driver was also found to beunworkable, although it had been used theprevious evening without any apparent

problem.

The Wiltshire case at Alton Barnes in July'1990 reported the failure of many vehicles tostart, with batteries found to be dead, after aheavy buzzing sound was heard during thenjght, followed also by the discovery of alarge formation of crop circles in a nearbyfield.

There have been many repoded problemswith battery operated equjpment during cropcircle investigations. lt has been noted thatthere seems to be a significant lack of normalenergy within the formations when comparedwith the surrounding area. Camera andvideocamera batteries and other equipmenthas been found to fail in a number of casesduring these rnvestigalions , as if there issome draining of energy. In one case in 1991a mobile phone was found to be unworkablewithin the area of a crop circle formation, yetworked normally when held outside the area.Even more surprising has been the renewalof apparently 'dead' batteries.

It has been suggested that it is perhaps thesame apparent lack of normal energy that isresponsible for the reported failures ofvehicle engines and lights in the interfe.enceeffect cases. ln some of these incidents theengine, lights, or other equipment has beenfound to return to normal opeaationunexpectedly - sometimes without any furtheraction by the driver to restart the vehicle

All of these described characteristics, whichseem to relate to both the vehicleinterference effect cases and the crop circleformations, can be compared and may helpin identifying with more certainty the type ofphenomenon involved in these events.padicularly when examining also what hasbeen discovered in the course of crop circleinvestigations. (14)

Alionments.

The particular luminosity of UFOS is noted inmany described experiences, and inobservations connected with some of the crop

Page 11: New Bufora Journalbufora.org.uk/documents/NewBUFORAJournalNo.15Apr2005...UFOs,Interference & Crop Circles Darwin and Aliens Rendlesham Visit New Bufora Journal ISSN 1476 - 5314 April

New Bufora Joumal - Issue 15 - April 2005

circle incidents. The luminosity is thought tobe produced by ionisation of the atmosphere, and there is also evidence of aliOnment insome of the reports.

Some underlying cause may be involved inlinking these incidents.

The UFO obsetuatjons, many of theseincluding interference effects, and the cropcircle formations, have some characterisiiceffects in common as outlined, with otherstrange phenomena described in some cases.

One significant clue is perhaps to be found inthe location sites. A study of UFO reportsfollowing tne major wave of British stghlngs in1967 revealed three padicular alignments oflocations identified in the reports. One ofthese followed a significant line throughWarminster lo the Essex coast near WestN,4ersea. (15)

This alignment links with the identification of aline of strange phenomena, moslly in the 1gthcentury, found by the American researcherand aulhor Charles Fort, whose work formedthe basis of the Fortean Society. Theparticular alignment identified was throughReading in Eerkshire to Colchester, near theEssex coast, forming the base line of a'London Triangle'. Charles Fort noted from hisresearch that the most severe earthquake ofthe 1gth century was centred near Colchester.with a strange red appearaflce in the sky atthe time of the earthquake, and that the WestMersea area of Mersea lsland was one of theplaces which suffered most from its effects.

There are also what has been termed 'leylines' - the apparent connection of ancient andsacred sites. The British discovery,of thesealignments was by the Hereford archaeologistAlfred Watkins, who wrote of the findings inhis book, Ire OId Straight lrack, which wasfirst published in 1925, and republished in'1970. These alignments have also beendiscovered in other countries - including

China, where they are referred to as 'dragonlines'.

Although these alignments do not have aphysical appearance on the ground, they aremarked out as the connection of ancientsites, and the lines can apparently bedetected - because of the presence of somekind of energy. One of the most impodantBritish alignments passes throughWarminster - which is recognized as being amajor centre of the ley lines. (16) Thea.gnment is from Somerset. then pass, rgnear Glastonbury, and on through theWarminster area to the Essex coast. againat West Mersea, following the same line aslhe alignment of UFO sighting observations, and the base line of Charles Fort's 'LondonTrjangle'.

There is now also found to be someconcentration of the vehicle interferenceeffect cases in lhe Warminster area, associated with UFO sighting reports, withmany of the crop circle formations alsonoted as appearing in the same area.

The Enerov Connection?

Crop circle events are also found to be ondetectable energy lines, when lheformations are later investigated. The presence of some energy sourcehaving some connection with the

UFO sightings, the interference effects anddescriptions of other strange phenomena, and being also an esseniial part of the cropcircle events, seems to be a reasonableconclusion. lt seems too much of acoincidence to believe that all of thesedifferent evenis - the UFO sightings, andinterlerence effects, the skange phenomenanoted by Charles Fort, and the connection ofancient and sacred sites, should all followthe same line by chance alone.

Significant alignments ofuFO sightings have

Page 12: New Bufora Journalbufora.org.uk/documents/NewBUFORAJournalNo.15Apr2005...UFOs,Interference & Crop Circles Darwin and Aliens Rendlesham Visit New Bufora Journal ISSN 1476 - 5314 April

also been noted in France, and were set outby Aime Michel in the book Flying Saucersand the Straight Line Mystery. ('17) Researchan France has also confirmed that magneticfield disturbances have been detected andfound to coincide with the time and location ofUFO sighting reports. (18)

The energy present at the many ancient sitesin Britain is also apparently detectable. Thereis evidence that this may have been knownfrom ancient times, and could provide areason for the particular placing of ancient andsacred sites along the noted alignments. Theenergy is also reported to be detectable in thestanding stones ai megalithic sites, whichform part of the alignments, and containquartz. This crystalline mineral is noted inparticular for being capable of holding andproducing a significant electric charge, withWiltshire having a concentration of the ancientmegalithic sites more so perhaps thananywhere else.

It does seem to be a rcal possibility that theLJFO sightings, the associated interferenceeffects - which have been recognized aselecko- magnetic effects, the location of theancient and sacred sites, and the crop circleformations may all be linked with some kind ofenergy, perhaps a varying magnetic force, theimportance of which has not yet been properlyrecognized.

The luminous appearances described in theUFO reports, and in some of the crop circleevents are more than that in some cases. There is at times some solidity or skucture inwhat is seen, at least for part of the time.Physical effects are produced. but there isalso what can perhaps be described as a'transient reality' in some of the objects seen, and time anomalies in some of theexperiences.

A geomagnetic explanation, giving rise toluminous elfecis. is not suffic:enl lo explain anapparent intelligence, and sometimes morethan that, being described in many cases. lfthere is an energy link as suggested by theinterference effect cases, and as noted at

some of the ancient sites and at crop circleformations at similar locations, this may helptowards an explanation of these strangephenomena, and the apparent alignments.

GULF BREEZE - TRUE g&FALSE

Norman Oliver

So read the original heading to a majorarticle I wrote for the late Graham Birdsall, which appeared in QUEST INTERNATIONALVol I No.1- the forerunner of the sadly nolonger published UFO MAGAZINE - back in1989. With some amendments and additionshere and there where subsequent informationhas come to light lam now pleased to(re)present it in the pages of NBJ.

ln the course of my article in NBJ13 about theEureka Springs Conferences, I referred toGulf Breeze and'Mr Ed.'(NOT the talkinghorse!!) several times without going into anydetail, but what WAS - or lS, for occasionalreports are still surfacing - this Gulf Breeze'flap' all about?

Some, indeed, may well ask, 'Where is GulfBreeze?'Well, Gulf Breeze is in northwest

New Bufora Journal - Issue 15 - April 2005

Florida facing the Gulf of Mexico. Just to itssouth lies a long strip of land - PensacolaBeach - reached via the Beach Bridge. Tothe north across Pensacola Bay via ihe BayBridge (severely damaged, I believe, in a2004 hurricane), lies Pensacola with apopulation of around 60,000. To the east liesEglin Alr Forc€ Base - an extremely largemilitary area.

A flashing neon fish sign pointed the way toPensacola Beach, but it is not suggested thisis in any way responsible for the UFOreportsl From January 19Bg (Fortunatelyperhaps not in 1987 as you will see) the BayBridge was out of action due to an incursivebarge. The most recent census figures forGulf Breeze itself show a population of 5530-The diagrams will give the reader anapproximate idea of the locality.

The story of Gulf Breeze has to begin withthat of '[IR. ED', as he became known.since it was HIS photographs that initiatedthe tlow of other reports, and also becausehe would seem to have had many more andvairied experiences than anyone else.

It is not my intention here to go intoarguments for or against the photographsthemselves, or to present lengthy analyses ofthe equipment used and prints produced.

Those in a better position and far morequalified than myself (Bruce Maccabee'ssarticle in the April '1989 MUFON UFOJOURNAL No. 252 refers), have done so ingreat detail. ln the last analysis, however, onecan only say 'yes' or 'no' to their autenticity oroiherwise

Jennifer Tucker wrote in the Flodda TampaIrbune of 30h. January 1989t'Ed's story islengthy and strange and he knows it'. I canonly comment that in doing my best tountangle the innumerable newspaper andmedia references to his claimed experiences:to the authenticity of his photos and generalbackground information, that I know it tool

The Gulf Breeze 'flap' began when the GulfBrceze sentinel of 19rh. November 1987published photos received from 'ananonymous Gulf Breeze resident'. These hadbeen accompanied by a'To Whom lt MayConcern' letter commencing 'On the night ofNovember 11th., t took the pictures you nowsee before you. I was reluctant at first to showthen to anyone, but my wife convinced me toshow them to Ed. Ed in tum said that thephatos should be shown to the press. That iswhy I am presenting them to you...'. fheletter went on to say that the writer had seenan object after sitting down to dinner: had thenrushed to his bedroom, got out his 17-year-oldPolaroid camera, went outside and took fourgood pictures on one fllm and one on anotherbefore the object shot up and disappeared.

This had seemed 'about the size of a smallhouse', but was quite some distance away. lt'weaved and bobbed' a little as it hovered forseveral minutes, but there was no rotation. Aglow could be seen from the bottom as thoughthat might be the power source. The'windows', or whatever they were, wereequally spaced. No flashing lights were to beseen: it was a dull gray-blue 'thing'. The writerreiterated that the letter and photos were not ahoax, stating he was a prominent citizen of thecommunity 'l have nothing to gain, I haveeverything to lose....'

These and later photos that Ed took mostlyshowed craft of a general 'layered' sphericaltype - not really the same as a 'conventionalllying sauce/ but, to my mind, rather likemodel Chinese Lanterns on a Christmas tree.(Please - no quotes to the effect that I'msaying they WERE - I'm NOTI). ln mostcases the diameters of the craft Ed saw wereestimated to be around 10 to 15 feet.

Over the ensuing months numerous UFOphotos were taken by Ed who, in the earlydays, had also been given the appellation of'Jim'. Some were taken by his home: somefrom country roads and some at ShorelinePark opposite Pensacola Beach. A videofilm was also included.

It's interestjng that three reports from otherwitnesses (see rcport /isU on 111h. November1987, although reported AFTER the time ofEd's first sighting, actually occurred BEFOREit, and that a beam of blue light featured inone, whilst Mr. Somerby, the Editor andFounder of the Senfirel together with hjswife, were witnesses to another. By acoincidence, when he subsequently called inat the Senrne/'s offices, they were just'pasting up' a front page which included Ed'spictures. Both he and his wife then said,'That's what we saw'. Their experience tookplace only five minutes before Ed's. 'BelieverBill's'22"d. December 1987 photos (see /is0were also coincidental as Ed took another ofhis pictures eady the following morning. The 'blue beam' was very relevant because,in a later addition to his account of the firstphotographs, Ed. (now revealed as localresident Ed Walters), claimed that the UFOhad, in fact, shot a blue beam at him. Hehad then been 'frozen' and lifted up from theground. He believed, amongst other things.that this beam was an aid to telepathicconversatlon Ed'sexperiences, and, indeed, the vast majority of all knownsightings in the Gulf Breeze area werethoroughly researched by the local MUFONinvestigation team of Donald Ware, CharlesFlannigan and Bob Reid.

New Bufora Joumal - Issue 15 - April 2005

Subsequent to his first experience, Edfrequently heard a 'humming' or 'buzzing'sound prior to a sighting and MUFON hadarranged a radio 'hook-up- with Ed for him tolet them know when he heard this sound sothat they could be aware a sighting might beimminent. Sometimes, Ed ignored the noise, but usually he would go outside to see if hecould get pjctures. At dusk on 2Oh. November1987, he saw an object and took fou. more.

On Slh. December 1987, just before dawn, Edphotographed a craft hovering just aboveground level in the school yard behind hishome. Then, soon after midnight on 176.December 1987 he took five more shots of acraft, including one picture looking skaight upinto what could conceivably have been thepower source - something resembling a 'food-mixer'.

This was followed at 8pm.on the 28rh.December by Ed taking a video lasting oneminute and thirty-eight seconds of a crafttraversing behiod his house. There was thena break in activity until the mid-January. Onthe night of 2'1''. January 1988 Ed was gettinga little concerned about expedences he'd hadwith the object - concerned about goingoutdooF unprotected. Nevertheless, on thisnight, he was bringing material to MUFONinvestigator Bob Reid, who'd spent some ninenights in a van a quarter-of-a-mile from Ed'shome waiting for something to happen, and heheard the hum as he was walking throughtrees half-way to the van. He called Bob onthe walkie{alkie, saying he'd seen a smallobject near the star Sirius. lt had not beenmuch larger than a pinpoint and had quicklyflashed out. Bob had not seen the object - hewas looking in another direction, but DID getvideo shots of his own of Ed holding his headand shaking it in disbeliefthat Bob was unableto hear the noise.

A point of possible sjgnificance during thisperiod was that a symmetrical area of brown, dying grass appeared in the school yard at therear of Ed's home, though the occufience was

never directly associated with any of Ed'sexperiences.

The'hum'was again heard on Sunday, 24b.January '1988 and Ed rang the Sentinel Onthat date he had been unable to makecontact via MUFON'S radio set-up andconsequently phoned the newspaperinstead to say he could hear the 'buzz'.Sentrre/ Editor Duane Cook thenaccompanied Ed in his pick-up truck throughNaval Live Oaks to Tiger Point East. On theway, Ed said that he was feeling stabs ofpain in various parts of his body and stated'they' had spoken to him telepathically, saying, 'in sleep you knoul'. They stopped inthe road. Ed had his Polaroid and a videocamera and Duane a 35mm camera.

Ed took the Polaroid and walked up the roada little. The buzz in his head grew louderand he felt a severc pain in his left hand. This gradually subsided and, just as he wasgoing to get back in his pick-up, Ed saw andobject and used his Polaroid. The Senf/relEditor watched the film come slowty out ofthe camera and develop. On it theregradually appeared a similar picture of atJFO to those previously taken. Duane hadstarted vjdeoing Ed prior to his using thePolaroid and had continued to do so as Edtook the photograph.

On other occasions when he had heard abuzz or a hum in his head and had seen acraft, Ed had heard telepathic commands to'step fot /vad' and saying, 'photogrcphs atefotbidden.' - aflet he had taken one. Once,at '1.00am, Ed had taken five photos of aUFO that appeared to be exuding moistureand steam from its underside. The UFOwas seemingly in trouble and prior to thesighting Ed had heard something like alvafertal/' in his head.

It was on 26ih. January 1988 that Ed appear-ed in the same photograph as a UFO, thephotographer being his wife, Frances. Ed

had been in the shower when the crafrshowed up and had heard no'buzz', knowingnothing of its presence till his wife called him:he then dashed out with a towel around him iobe photographed - together wjth the UFO - byhis wife.

On being provided by ITUFON with a sealedNIMSLO 3-D camera, Ed took a number ofphotographs at Shoreline Park at 9.30pm on26h. February 1988 - photographs of acompletely different type of UFO. Film hadbeen placed in the camera by Tom Dooley inSan Antonio. The camera was then boxed upand sent to Donald Ware: Bob Reid had thenpassed it on to Ed about a month before.Later, a Press Conference was called towitness the camera being unsealed.

Those present included Walt Andrus, thenlnternational Dkector of MUFON: MUFONinvestigators and radio and pressrepresentatives. The camera having originallybeen sealed with wax. all of them watched theseals being broken, the film being removed, then developed and printed. Walt Andrus hadprefaced the'unsealing' by saying,

Ihls rs lre lirst time in recotded history thatwe've had the oppollunity to work so closelywith a witness as slghfings arc still beingmade...We don't know if anything wi show upon this film. There arc so many things thatcould go wrong . . .

Well, something DID show up.

On 7m. March 1988 Ed purchased a non-double exposure Polaroid type SUN 600camera and was rewarded by getting apholograph of a UFO with it the following day- 8lh. March

Whilst in Duane Cook's office at the Sert nelon other business on 17rh. March 1988, Ed gotthe 'hum', and a group of people including TVDirector Peter Newman, who loaded Ed'scamera - the new stereo - with un-openedpacks of film, went down to Shoreline Park.At 10.10pm, Ed saw a UFO and took some

quick pictures. Others in the group saw theflashes, but at that particular moment theywere all a little way from Ed andconsequently missed seeing the object itseltwhich, nevertheless, came out on the film asthose in the group watched the picturesdevelop. On May'1s'. '1988 Ed took his finatpictures from Shoreline Park.

ln view of their multiplicity, the media's mainconcern was largely in connection with hisphotographs. but he was also reported ashaving, on 2no. Decembe|1987, a CE llltype experience after being awakened in theearly hours by the ubiquitous 'hum': he wasthen said to have seen a gray 'childlike' figurethrough glass doors. lt was also alleged that, when on 12rn. January 1988 he took a 'roadpicture - of a crafr with its lights reflectedfrom a wet road surface on Soundside Drive- he again saw a number of similarcreatures.

Ed had said that when he had first sent in his11b. November photos to the Senfire/ hethought they would be published and thatwould be the end of the matter. ln fact, ofcourse, ITUFON (Mutual UFO Network),CUFOS (Center for UFO Studies), the mediaand others soon became involved and Edfound that his family, including his youngdaughter were also being approached: hewas accused in some quarters of faking thephotos and so on. He then thought he wouldmaintain - if possible - his anonymity as'l\,ilr.Ed.', and also work on a book about hisphotographs, experiences and a rebuttal ofhis critics.

His first book - The culf Breeze Slghfings' -was published early in 1990, just in time for'pre-issue' copies to be available at the AprilEureka Springs Conference of that year.Another book- Urc Abductions in culfBreeze" - was published in 1994. Bothbooks were co-authored by Ed and his wifeFrances. lt is only fair, of course, to say thatthere WAS considerable controversy as to theauthenticity of Ed's experiences and hisphotos, the two main protagonists beingCUFOS and MUFON. CUFOS, to say theleast, appeared to be more than a little doublful about their genuineness, whilst MUFON,who would seem to have conducted by far themore comprehensive and intricate investi-gations considered it most likely they weregenurne. An article, The Scale RemainsUnbalanced' by Bruce Maccabee in theMUFON UFO JOURNAL ol April '1989 - anextremely detailed and informative one - wasstrongly supportive of this viewpoint. At somepoint Philip Klass had surfaced to support thedebunkers - but then he wouid have done, wouldn't hel?

Ed, incidentally, underwent five subsequentregressive hypnosis sessions with Dr. DanOverlade, a Pensacola resident and hjqhlyqualifled practising clinical psychologist. Eachsession opened up new chapters of hismemory. Dr. Overlade, skilled in his field, hadalready regressed two other abductees. He ison record as saying that as a result of hisstudy and association with these apparentabductees it had become increasingly difficultto remain a sceptic.

It is perhaps wise to bear in mind the words(or a paraphrase thereoD of the late Dr.Hynek, when he said 'Ihe most that one cansay about a UFO photograph rs fhai ore hasdone one's best to disprove it and failed'. ll lSonly fair to Ed, though, to point out that hehad, on occasion, used a sealed cameraprovided by MUFON, whilst on another, theSentlne/editor, as already recounted, watcheda Polaroid print developing at the actual timeof one of the sightings - as later did others. l,for one, would have had absolutely no ideason how to fake this, and, indeed, it must be a

unique occurrence in UFO annals. lt shouldalso be added on Ed's behalf that he had alengthy lieietector test and an electronicvoice analysis. All investigators' conclusionsagreed that Ed was both honest and sane.

Also, of course, there were two other sets ofphotographs showing a similar type of IJFO.'Believer Bill's' were received at theSENT/VEL'S office on 22'd. December 1987,whilst others dated back to June 1986. lt isa great pity that neither of thesephotographers came forward or were traced,as even one completely indepen{ent knownsource would surely have set the seal on theauthenticity of Ed's photos. However, onecan appreciate their position, which mighthave become virtually the same as Ed's.

Dr. Bruce Maccabee said in his MUFONUFO JOURNAL artlcle that this is 'notprimarily a photographic case', because thetruth or falsity of Ed's reporls must be basedon non-photographic information. This I

would cedainly agree with, and one thing I

found of interest was a 'non€vent'. Namely, there was no 'flap' in June 1986 when twophotos of a craft similar to Ed's were allegedto have been taken, but not sent to theSertine/s offices until December 1987. Allsorts of conclusions might be drawn fromthis - the obvious one being that there wasno media interest in June '1986 andconsequently no-one was looking upl

As I wrote in my recent Ozatk Conferencearticle, I then had the chance of speaking to'Mr. Ed', chatting with him for some twentyminutes and I certainly then considered himto be a most genuine person. ln asubsequent letter to me in 1990, Edauthorised me, if I wished, to quote him andI now do so. Hewrote..........

The staggeing UFO events that over-whelmed me and my fanily remain anenigma. We have been inteNiewed andinvestigated more times than I can count and

I respectfully say I have no answer to themost frequently-asked question, 'WHY ME?'

The regressive hypnosis underthe care of Dr-Dan Overlade does hint at some answers andinfringes on my personal life. I study thosetapes and memories in hope ofunderstanding.

Ihis is a very serbus event that is best seNedwith patience, but some people have beeninfluenced by much tellinq and re-te ing ofwhat happened, so a book becane the onlyway to record the complete details.

I understand the'book motive'will be hurledagainst me, but it doesn't natter Thedebunker will continue to degrade the photosand othq witnesses, slgrt unseer. Oneactually faked UFO photos and inplied that Itaok lhem. Lately. lhe same debunker faked acamputer test on a !4. genention copy andthen nailed it about.

All of the debunket's dis-infomation amountsto zero and the sightings have continued withmore and more witnesses each weekrcpafting the sttange objects ovet out city. ltseems that the more the critics try to explain itall away, the UFO shows itself to more andmore people lsioncdl Fd

It should be noted that Ed has always beenconsidered a most meticulous person and thathe has kept fully-detailed diary entries ofevents. To my mind, remembering all thephotos: telepathic messages: lhat there werewitnesses to some of the Polaroid filmsdeveloping: that there were similar photosand numerous witnesses to sightings of likeand unlike craft, plus the hypnosis sessionswith Dr. Overlade, that Ed's claimed CE I: CEll and possibly CE lll and lV experiences takesome disproving, though Graham Birdsall'scomments that follow, together with my ownare relevant in this connection Altogether, Ed' and in at least six cases his wife also -featured in over 20 reports on the tollowingdates:-

1987: 1 '16 & 2oh Nove mber,znd.236 ,27band 28h December.1988: 12h, 16h, 21'', 24h & 26s Januarv: 7'h& 26h February:4h,8h. t7s & 2orh Ma;ch;21"r April; and 1s'. May.

A year after my article had appeared inQUEST INTERNATIONAI Vol.g No.1,however, in Vol.10 No.l of that magazine, the late Graham Birdsall reported on somecontroversial aspects that had subsequentlydeveloped. The report itself had beencondensed from a longer one that Grahamhad contributed to Jim Moseley's SaucerSmear

Briefly, as reported therein, thesesurrounded the statements of two youngmen who claimed to have assisted Ed. infaking photos.. The youths were named inthe adicle as Tom Smith and Hank Boland.Smith's information was stated as centeringaround a group of five photos showing verysimilar LJFOS to those seen in the photostaken by Ed.Walters. Smith, it seems, hadclaimed that Ed had taken these with Smith'scamera and asked him to take them to theSerfr?e/ as if they were his own. lt appearsthat Smith knew the pictures were fake, because he said he was present when a setof pictures had been faked eadier by Ed withthe same camerc, but these had not turnedout good enough to use. Smith said he'dconsidered taking them to the newpaper, butthought better of it and just retained thepictures.

Ed. Walters version of events was that TomSmith had taken the pictures himsell thoughnot in Ed's presence, but that the photoswere genuine. He was reported as sayingthat Smith's father disliked the publicity thatwould have ensued and also had religiousobjections to UFOS. Therefore Tom got'offthe hook' by making out to his parents thatthe films were not genuine and had alsoimplicated another youth by the name ofHank Boland.

Ufologist Jim Moseley felt that Ed. Walteisdefence sounded unlikely but possible.MUFON announc€d on June 19s. 1990 at apress conference in a Pensacola hotel thatthey still supported Ed., but would investigatefurther. Later that day at another pressconference at Gulf Breeze City Hall, Mr. andMrs. Smith testified under oath supportingtheir son.

The case became even more complicatedwhen, apparently, Tom Smith claimed that thephotos taken by Ed. Walters on his camerawere shot after Ed.'s first group of five pictureswere taken on November 11h. 1987, thepictures that appeared later in the local paper. However, a local teenager known only as'Rob' then came forward to say that TomSmith showed him his photos before anythingappeared in the press and before November1lih. According to Rob, Tom Smith was whitewith fear'after taking genuine photos of analien craft and accordingly went on to backEd's version of the matter.

The whole thing became even more bizarre,Graham Bkdsall's article states, when severalteenagers from Ed's padies alleged that Edengaged in 'occult' activities - includingreciting biblical excerpts including the 23@psalm backwards! This Ed completelydenied.. tn his article, though, Graham wenton to say it was his belief that this would tie inwith Ed.'s bizarre behaviour in a 4o-minutevideo tape he showed Moseley during a visitto his home in 1988, in which he cursed andraved wildly while driving his truck to a hoped-for rendezvous with a UFO. Duane Cook, ofthe Serfrne/, was, Graham Birdsall records,'sitting next to Ed and doing a good job ofoveracting, or else in what occultists wouldcall'Demonic Possession'.

To quote further from Graham's 1990 afticle,"There are apparently four people who havetaken pictures of Gulf Breeze phenomena. The best known is, of course, Ed. Anotherhas the pseudonym 'Jane' and nothing isknown about her. The third is Tom Smith Jnr.and the foudh is 'Believer Bill' Who is

'Believer Bill'? Some think it is Ed. Walters, but there are other theories.....

A former neighbour of Ed Walters is RayGriffin, but he denies being'Eeliever Bill',though admitting'being into UFOS and theparanomal'. Griffin moved to Gulf Brgezesome time ago (Iris was in 1990 - N.O.),from Fyffe, Alabama and enquiries revealedthat whilst a resident of Fyffe, Ray criffinwas known locally as'Believer Phil'!"

Graham continues:

There are other strange coincidences. Oneof the most intiguing.....is that of an eldedywitness naned Billie ZammiL wife of aretircd military officet named CaptainJoseph Zammit. She rcpoded a seeinq ablue beam come trom a craft. Less than 24hours later, Ed. Walters produced a photo ofa clx emifting a blue beam.

The above apart, a model of one of theUFOS Ed claimed were in his photographshad been found in his former residencewhen Ed moved house. So far as this wasconcerned, Ed staled that before beingpurchased by the new owner, the house hadbeen unlocked during the daytime over aperiod of months and anyone could haveplanted the model. The new owner, namedMenzer, found the model weeks before itbecame public knowledge, but neverthought Gbout it until a reporter lustnappineOato turn up one day and askMenzer, amongst other things, if he hadfound a modell Personally, if this modelHAD been used by Ed to take fake photos, I

can't imagine why he left it in the housewhen he moved!1. There was also adifference. The model had only one set ofpodholes, whereas the UFOs in Ed's photoshad two!

lncluded in Graham's article were a numberof quotes on the Gulf Breeze affair fromwell-known ufologists. Amongst these werethe following:-

Looking up, they saw alarge, boomerang-shaped object coveredwith white liqhts. lt passed overhead -possibly as slowly as 30mph., at a height of150-200ft. About the size of a house, itstrailing edge seemed brighter than the restand its outline looked 'fuzzy' as it movedmajestically out of sight.

February l988. 8.30pm. Chris Poole, aged'17, was at a McDonald's restaurant whenfriends pulled into a parking lot saying thye'dseen a UFO from Highway 98. These went below the treeline nearShoreline Park, but popped back up, firstmoving westward past Deer Point, then easttowards Shoreline Park, vanishing below thetreeline. They popped up again over the trees, then moved off out of sight. Dennis watchedthe whole thing through 7x 50 binoculars, but'the intensity ofthe lights' kept him from seeing

what was behind them.

l4rh. March 1988. App. 8.OOpm. A familyreported an object coming in at an angle toGulf Breeze from the southwest on aneasterly course. About 1500 to 2000 feetaway it had a bright light - apparently on therear - with a smaller greenish-blue blinkinglight above: there was another bright lightforward - at one time three bright lights, butat one point the third light disappeared to bereplaced by a circular orange glow. Thefather thought it was about the size of a 747.The son, sitting in the back seat of the car, screamed that he heard an adult male voicein his head and yelled, 'lt's talking'. fheparents could hear nothing, but the son saidthe voice commanded SIOP', brit that itwas like the voice was talking to someoneelse.

7th. April 1988. tl.3opm. a culf Breezestockbroker crossing Bay Bridge saw a smallcraft over the Bay flying in from the east. Hecame to the base of the bridge, pulled over tothe left and got out. The object was triangularshaped and about fifteen feet long. As itneared the bridge, it glowed and hovered for afew seconds. The UFO was outlined in whitelights with red and green ones at the centre, near which were two indentations. lt tu.nedand 'glided' back over the bay towardsPensacola making a 'tiny. low. aerodynamicsound'.

28rh, April 1988. ln the early morning a 57-year-old retired Ajr Force man - a localdisabled veterans' President - was drivingeast on Highway 98 near his home when hesaw an object 'half the size of a water tank'which paced his car for about 45 seconds tillhe reached his turn-off. Just above treetoplevel, 150 feet away, as he stopped to watch,so did the object. lt then emitted a blue beamover the Highway behind him and, as well asthe object itself, he could see the'beamemitter'which seemed to be about four feethigh with a pointed top and boltom like twofaceted cones joined together and wasapparently mounted on the side of the craft.Beam and craft seemed the same colour. Hegot back in his car, but as soon as he touchedthe accelerator the object'blinked out'anddisappeared.

8th. July 1988. A pathologist was gettingready for his early morning jog. On lookingout over the Sound he saw what he firstthought was a low-flying aircraft on collisioncourse with his house. He woke his wife andthey watched for five minutes as they saw anidentical object to the one in the Senfne/hover low over the water without disturbing thesurface: fringed portholes were clearly visible. After hovering two to three hundred feet awaynear the end of thek pier, the objectproceeded westwards and its lights graduallyblended with those of a distant Navy base.

September 1988 8.07pm An anonymouswitness saw two objects over Hardee's indowntown Gulf Breeze. She thenproceeded east on Highway 98 untjl in frontof Food World. Two objects were seen justover trees on woods befind the Sentire/ofJlce, heading towards the bay. Only thebottom of the first craft could be seen: threered lights on it lit up and winked out oneafter the other. The second craft then lit upall round at once. There were rgundportholes on the second one each with twolights, producjng an orange glow. The lightswere glowing from INSIDE the craft. Thefirst was round and long - about four timesthe size of the second which looked like achild's top with a flat bottom. The secondwas immediately behind the flrst, almost asthough being towed. There was no noise. The objects were then lost to view.

l7th. March 1989 3.45pm. Letter from'Astounded in Milton' (received later by theSentinel) rcad:-

I have enclosed thrce photogrcphs I took anthe afternoon of 17.3.89 at about 3.45pnftom the Garcon Point peninsula. Photostaken facing west with a Polaroid 600camera. Three pholas were taken insuccession before the object depa!7ed to thewest. lt made no noise and climbed awaylike a rocket. I am a real estate agentwishing anonymity - also a rctired F-4 pilat.P.S. My truck would not staft for about fiveninutes after the object left and I noticed Ihad built up a pretty stout electic chargewhen I touched the door handle. C,aft inthe photos were too small to show up innewsprint.

The foregoing was a selection of reports madeduring the'flap' period, which, as can be seen, was quite an extended one. ln all, there werewell ove||00 repods from over 150witnesses. For a town of around fivethousand inhabitants this is pretty good going.Though I have mentioned Warminster, oneshould perhaps be wary of comparisons withBritish 'flaps' sinc€ the area covered by Gulf

Breeze is many times greater than a'compact' British town with a similarpopulation. That said, another comparisonDOES spring to mind, namely the 'llap' in theBroad Haven area of South Wales in the'1970s - but with 'space-suited entities'substitlted for photographs.

What is my own overall opinion?

Although I have made favourable referencesto Ed Waltefs, I have to say that some ofGraham's comments were very much to thepoint. Whilst he agreed that there were twoinescapable 'pro' facts - the belief by inte i-gent and wholly responsible Ufologists that Edwas telling the truth and the suppotlive testi-mony given by ordinary people. residents inand around Gulf Brceze - (also, of course, Edhad passed lie detector and similar tests), hispoints against included the following...

More independent analysis should have beenconducted, perhaps by people having noconnection with Ufology.

Despite the length of some witnesses'sightings, the only photos taken were thosesent in anonymously and their anonymitycould have been part of a deliberate plan ofaciion lo fosier a hoax

Regarding the trip by Ed with Serline/ reporterDuane Cook, Graham wrote,

Did Ed mention physical pain to researchersbefare this meeting, or was this yet anothetexpetience wodhy af news copy? YeI again,Ed takes a Polaroid photagraph of an object, but Duane sees nathing of the UFO. She is,however, handily placed to see the objectdevelop on the ptint, a factor repeated withother wltnesses. We would be extremelyinterested to discaver what precise route bothDuane and Ed fo owed that day and whodictated the route to follow. By implication, could someone have heen waiting out ot sightof Duane, ready lo patlake in a prcanangedexercise?

Graham goes on to ask,

On the 2dh. February 1988, Ed takes morephotos of a UFO and great publicity is givento the sealed camera. But were lhe samepeople present at this ceremony alongsideEd when the UFO was captured on film?

Another comment made rcfers to 7b. March'1988 when it was pointed out that Ed wasgiven a brand new camera and a brand newroll of film yet only produced the onephotograph. Why did he not take more?AIso, ten days later, again Ed produced aUFO photo when having wandered awayfrcm a group of people, but all anyone sawwere flashes. Several other points made byGEham were very apposite and lwould justadd one thing myself that I would like tohave seen done by the MUFON investi-gators. Namely, for a comparison to havebeen made with the reports of those whosesightings were of craft similar to Ed's to seeif they were all in the same general area, anda 'plan' to have been made of theirtrajectories and direction of movement to seeif there might have been a common 'source'.It should also be borne in mind that - aga -as with Warminster - ihere were ArmedForces bases not that far distant with craftand operations that might have accounted forsome of the reports.

I recall, also, my experiences with the'hoaxed' Scoriton Mystery where four peoplewere involved in the hoax. ls it possible that asimilar number of people could have been soinvolved in the main Guif Breeze events? That said, to this day, the source(s) of whathappened at Gulf Breeze remain(s) anenigma.

Bolh Tom and his \vife had thepowerful and exlrenlcly eerie sensc ofother peoplewi(h thcn and they heard shuflling souDds andboth felt 'out ofsync' with rhings. They commented that there was nowind or breeze of any kind that would have been

As they approached a small footbridge Tom sawa figure cross over the bridge, which disappearedtotally before his eyes.'l'onr stepped onto thebridge with Melanie calliDg to him to ,come

Overdue Response to the 'lmplant'lnvestigation by Dr. Blackmore.

The Other Side of the 'Alien ToothFiIing,

by James Basil @ 2003

Some of you may have heard about thealleged alien implant from my mouth, othersnot, but due to recent queries I have decidedto write the following. I hope you are one ofthose who can find it in you to understand.Others, no doubt, will attack me on a purelyintellectual, even "scientific" basis, withoutinterest in my emotional experience.

The implant analysis was something that I

never really got around to setting the recordstraight on. Of course, the truth js always alittle more complicated than it is at firstpresented. Let me explain lr4Y side of thestory then. and for the first time it seems...

The story was presented by Dr. Blackmore asif "James is 100% surc he has the proof...butoops he hasn't, he was wrong, it was just atooth filling." Although lDlD send a reply toUFO Mag, I heard nothing more back fromthem (as per usual) and because life gotworse for me, not better (contrary to anotherarticle Blackmore wrote,

' did not sigh a sigh

of relief and conclude "l was wrong after all")and because lthought no-one would everlisten to me again becalse lwas'\rrong", I

gave up trying...

Understand that leading up before thishappened, no-one was already listening tome. And it was this, and other factors, thatled to the 'implant' situation in the firstplace. I had tried various "experts" includingTony Dodd but this was no helpwhatsoever- He always seemed iritated bymy telephone calls and said, "l'd neverconsider hypnosis ior anyone under the ageof 18." ! had more luck when lcame acrossMaria Ward (on my own) who was veryhelpful and positive jndeed for me, but thenshe "disappeared" all of a sudden and ljvedfar from me anyvay (l live in Bristol, shelived in Dartford). That, in itself, madematters worse - losing my only support.Worse still, at around about the same time.the Andrews family (whom I had been put an

contact with, via Maria) also "disappeared"and thus lwas left, it seemed, all on myown, isolated. You must understand thatapart from them no-one else seemed tobelieve or undersiand me, not even myfamily or friends. :o( I desperately tried toget help agaan...

I went back to the psychiatrists convinced I

must be schizophrenic because of previoustests they had done, tablets they had given, and reports (some lhave) which they hadwritten. But they assured me, at twentyyears of age. my "schizphrenia" should begetting worse than ever...not "better." Andso l was told l was "normal" and to meetother experiencers like me! lwent to JennyRandles for help but she was just as busyand involved in investigation as Tony Doddhad been. After many desperaie months andmany letters later, as well as many phone-calls only to be told "She is away" (again) ...

I received a letter from her saying lvloysheeKalmann, a psychotherapist who had wriitena book with Peter Hough and who, she

claimed, was "sympathetid' and "openminded," was willing to see me in Manchesterat little or no cost. This seemed a God-send.but imagine how upset I was when he simplysaid that he thought most cases of abductionwere "scfeen memories" or "masks" forordinary events or child abuse- So I askedhim, "How many times, when you havewo*ed with abductees, have you managed todiscover what you believe is the kuth of theirexperiences, i.e. child abuse?" He replied, tomy utter disbelief, "Well, never." Already I

was unsure if lwanted Hll\4 to help me, and sowhen he said he would send me a list ofhypno-analysts I could contact ldid littlecomplaining!

I recieved the list and tried one of the hypno-analysts in Bristol, and yet he came acrosssceptical of my story - thinking there wassome "othet reason" but he would try anyway- and then he told me that his cost was f50per session. Dismayed at the difficulties I hadhad. I slipped further inlo my depression...l\,4ore and more so, I became anqry at thevisitors forever getting me involved, and moreand more frustrated at the lack of evidence.ln fact I would have given my right eye, so tospeak, for evidence to convince people I was"for real" and thus convince them to help me.Understand, lhis was my mind set at the time. And, of course, I had heard of "alien implants"though I had no knowledge of having onemyself... To be honest, though there weremany parallels between my experience andother abductees, awareness of an implantbeing put in me was not one of my mefiories(note: I have also not been hypnotised, andthough I have enough memories to write thebook I am writing, I still have many gaps; I

would say 50% recall, at an estimate).

Thus, when one of my sisters proclaimed, quite seriously, that she had found a "strangemetal thing" in the ROOF of her mouth, andwhich she had removed, I of course wonderedif this might be the evidence I was lookingfor? I was nowehere near sure, but i thought it(and this is important) "JUST l/llGHT BE."

Moreover, the "what if?" factor was too muchto bear. I decided that, even if this wasn't animplant, what use was it thrown away...inother words, what if it WAS? I COULD besitting on hard evidence and to do nothingabout it would be anethema.

So, then, I was under little illusion that I had"definite proof." I went, flrstly, to a UFOreseaacher - Harry Harris -who was also a

solicitor, and he said that it was the propertyof my sister and that "really it should be downto her". But I said that she wanted nothingmore to do with it and that she had allowedme to take it for analysis "ln case it might bean implant." Well, he asked me to send it byrecorded delivery and of course I decljned, and that was as far as it went, really.Another time some "researcher" had written a

letter to me and brought round hrs"mictoscope".-. you know, one of those toythingies which wasn't really much copl He,and then a more professional researcheTJohn Hansen (a policeman), did someenquies at Universities, but nothing wasreadily forthcoming.

Then, during my l\,4edia course, I decided todo an interview wilh Dr. Susan Blackmore. I

wondered if she might take up the offer if I

told her lwas an abductee and that I hadremoved an alien implant...not from mysiste/s mouth but my own. Why the changein story? Because I was by now SOdesperate for help that the implant seemedthe only hope (the "ticket," so to speak) that I

had. And, I theorised, that after what HarryHarris had said to me, as well as sorneothers, about whether my sister had beenabducted and if not well why did she have animplant and not me (in other words theyexpressed scepticism), lthus decided to tella'white lie'so that hopefully someone wouldTAKE NOTICE! And Dr. Blackmore did.

But as you know the "implant" turned out tobe nothing more than de.tal amalgam, tinand silver. Before lend this story. for there rs

little more to say, remember the followingthings:

32

Page 35: New Bufora Journalbufora.org.uk/documents/NewBUFORAJournalNo.15Apr2005...UFOs,Interference & Crop Circles Darwin and Aliens Rendlesham Visit New Bufora Journal ISSN 1476 - 5314 April

New Bufora Journal - Issue 15 - April 2005

a). I had the implant tested out of desperationto get evideflce (the motive being help ofsome kind) Sad and tronic that, seeing asnothing transpired but articles saying lthoughtI had an alien implant but it was just a filljng: I

also had ,t tested ",ust in case it MIGHT be animplant..." in the service of science andhumanity

b)- Most of all, I was a confused, desperate, and very young abductee who alsoexoerienced a whole host of other problems inrelation to -y abduclion exepefiences(including malt.eatment by psychiatrists, poorresponse from UFOlogy, bullying at school,'ADHD,' depression, and, I believe,"institutiona sation in the sense that I hadspent so much time with psychiatrists be;ngtold, effectively, that lwas abnormal and thuswas wary of the everyday world. I haddeveloped some kind of dependency becauseof the constant visits).

c). This is an example of what can happenwhen abdlctees are not being helpedproperly.

All I wanted was for other people to swallowtheir pride about what was 'right" or "reat'-open their minds - and help me withunconditional positive regard, to cope with myexpeajences "as real." Denial was never anoption although I tried it many times, andalthough the "expe(s tried to force this viavarious methods, from the close-minded tothe almost criminal, i.e. telling me "lt's just notreal" to giving me anti-psychotics which led tofurther depression and even fits.

The outcome was not the one I wanted, and I

spent many more years confused anddepressed (indeed it is an understatement tosay I went through the "dark night of my soul.,)but at least today, by working through theexperiences myself and finding people whobelieve and accept, I can now say I am happyto be alive.

I fully apologise to all those I unintentionallymisled over the years. I hope you can

understand it was unintentional and that Ican be forgiven.

Shalom,

James

THANKS due to Dr. Blackmore forinvestigating the'implant, and also to DavidPatton for allowing use of the equipment atthe Ljniversity of the West of England. Thiskind of co-operation between science andUFOlogy is of course essential if we areever to progress further in our knowledge of-nsLal phenomena like a.,en abductton. The posilive side of this so-calJed 'negative,,result for the world of abductology is thar weknow the means is there for us to testsimilar implants in future. All we have to donow is locate and acquire them.

NOTE] When the scientist placed theimplant in the machine he told rne"There's a httle contaninalion on thesetweasers because lwas using them on asample of tin earlier, bLrt I doubt it will makemuch difference." Of course I didn,t arouewith hrm at this, lconsidered him to beiheexped, but looking back is that really theway you treat a possible alien artifact? What if you DID (as untikely as it is) make amistake? Moreover, if this was the otherway around, if it was an alien researche.allowing some oversight like this, thesceptics would later POTNT lT OUTscathingly. VISIT TO RENDLESHAMFOREST

OOREEN JENKINSON

(An alternative account of the rec€ntBUFORA kip to Rendlesham... ED)

On 14rh August 2004, I joined a group ona jou.ney through time to RendleshamForest in lpswich where,24 years ago, lhere had been multiple UFO sighlings. We were privileged to have LarryWa(en, an ex-us military personnelwhowas actually called to investigate at thattime, to be our speaker and leader on a"guided tour" of the forest along thefamous UFO route.

From what lrecall from Larry's talk, itwas just over 24 years ago, that "TopSecret" nuclear weapons, unknown to ourown government, were being housed atUS military bases at Woodbridge andBentwater, close to Rendlesham Forest.Subsequent to an event on 276December 1980. this area becamedubbed England's "Roswell" followingUFO sightings by 40 witnesses includingcivilians living around the area andmilitary officers. An alert went out asmilitary personnel were ordered toinvestigate "unusual lights" in the forest.A UFO had crashed taking off part of atall pine tree. The officers descrjbed theatmosphere as being electric, which theyfelt on their skin and clothing andsightings of three "creatures" were seenleaving a craft. Fo.3 nights UFO lightswere obseryed in the forest and on oneoccasion appeared over a military areawere the nuclear weapons were stored.Larry described a 'laser beam" beingdirected from the UFO into lhe storeroomwhich later revealedlo nuclear missileswere disabled.

Sinc€ that day, many UFO skywatchers visitthe area, spending nights in the forest. There have been umpteen reports of orbs oflight, fajries and nature spi.its seen bywatchers over the last 24 years and thefeeling of 'being watched' - a feeling whichl. too, shared.

l, like many others, took my camera to try tocapture something of the event. On mycamera I had a special interferencephotography filter fitted to a daylight filter. This filter was developed by the physicjstinventor of Polycontrast lnterferencePhotography, used to interfere with lightpatterns to look at the human energy field, basically as a diagnostic tool to detectdisease. lt was during one of his diagnosticsessions that something else appeared inthe energy field of hjs client, that of a"ghost". As an experiment, he attached asimilar filter to an old-fashioned box cameraand went along to the Tower of Londonwhere the film picked up numerous ghost, like images and scenes (which were nolonger there). lt was with this same fllterattached to my SLR camera on a manualsetting, in fading daylight as night wasdrawing near, that I took an image of thegroup as they gathered around LarryWarren at the site of the tall pine tree thathad been struck by the UFO 24 yearsearlier. Through the viewflnder I could seecoloured energies gathering around thegroup. I had no idea what I was capturinguntil I had the film developed. I felt this filmmay be of significance bearing in mind thefilter I used was not a "normal" filter: I donot think it is lens flare as I had seen theseenergies developing around the groupbefore I released the shutter. I wouldtherefore wish to share this image with youwhich I believe shows a beautiful spirit form- the'watchel'of Rendlesham Forestl Oris this just my imagination!
