The perception of a cross changed dramatically after Jesus’ crucifixion. Before that event, death on a cross was not only horrible, it was degrad-ing. It was a penalty reserved only for the most wretched of criminals. The word “glory” would not have found its way into the same sentence con-taining the word “cross.” But all that changed with Jesus. Over time, believ-ers began to venerate and honor the cross. They painted, sculpted, and carved images of it. Many lost their own lives for their association with it. Today our reverence for and relationship with the cross recalls little of the contempt originally associated with it. As it has been through the ages, it is our perception of the cross that determines how we follow Jesus. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR DEACON PETE CUELLAR With sadness we share the news that our beloved Deacon Pete Cuellar died on Saturday, August 15th. He had a fall a few days earlier and never regained consciousness. We are comforted by the fact that Deacon Pete had a tremendous devotion to our blessed Mother Mary, especially under the title of “Our Lady of Guadalupe”, and he died on the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. We will miss Deacon Pete’s deep faith, kind heart, dedication to the protection of the gift of life and his good sense of humor. He loved serving as a dea-con, whether it be a baptism or at Mass, and he was generous in giving his time to the needs of our parish and parishioners. Deacon Pete is survived by his wife of many years Eva, their three children Patty, Pete and Priscilla and several grandchildren. We ask you to pray for Deacon Pete and his fami-

ly. There will be a public visitation at Mission Park North Funeral Home (3104 Cherry Ridge) on Sunday, August 30th from 6 to 7 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. Vigil Service. The Funeral Mass will be at our parish at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 31st.

LEGION OF MARY MINUTE “To succeed in your intentions, entrust your-selves to the Blessed Virgin Mary always, but especially in moments of difficulty and dark-ness. From Mary we learn to surrender to God’s will in things. From Mary we learn to trust even when all hope seems gone. From Mary we learn to love Christ, her Son and the Son of God." -- St. John Paul the Great

IN THANKSGIVING FOR GEORGIA WALL’S SERVICE TO OUR SENIOR CENTER We announce the retirement of the Director of our Senior Center, Mrs. Georgia Wall, this month. Georgia has been working for our parish since 1999, and she has done a tremen-dous job in developing and directing our Senior Center. Our Senior Center is supported by the City of San Antonio and before the pandemic, was open Monday thru Friday in the mornings and included many interesting activities for our Seniors, including painting clas-ses, outings, bingo and lunch. Now, with the pandemic, our center is currently closed; how-ever, Dennis Friedrichs still delivers meals twice a week to Seniors who are eligible for the meal recipient program. We will work in cooperation with the City of San Antonio to determine when our Senior Center can reopen. Since this may not happen for several months, we will not hire a replacement at this time but wait until we are closer to the reopening date. Please say a prayer of thanksgiving for Georgia as we thank her for the wonderful ministry she has provided to our Seniors and for our parish.

FIRST FRIDAY — September 4, 2020 Let us respond to the request of The Sacred Heart of Jesus through St. Margaret Mary: “Behold this Heart that loves so much and is so little loved in return.” Let us offer our Mass of reparation today for His consolation.

Most of us can forgive and forget — we just don’t want the other person to forget we forgave. — Anonymous
