PASTOR’S MESSAGE This is the second in a series on the different sections of the Mass. Last week I reviewed the Introductory Rite which concludes with the Opening Prayer. This week I’ll begin to review the Liturgy of the Word as it occurs on a Sunday Mass. On a week day Mass there is no second reading or the recitation of the Creed unless a special Feast or Solemnity is celebrat-ed. These are the parts that comprise the Liturgy of the Word: First Reading, Responsorial Psalm, Second Reading, Gospel Acclamation, Gospel, Homily, Creed, Prayers of the Faithful or General Intercessions. The First Reading is usually but not always taken from the Old Testament. During the Easter Sea-son it is taken from the New Testament. It and the Responsorial Psalm are thematically related to the Gospel. The Responsorial Psalm is usu-ally taken from one of the 150 Psalms in the Bible. Preferably it is sung since psalms are poetic in nature. One line is selected as the response that the congregation is invited to sing or recite while the lector or can-tor covers the other verses. Sometimes the Responsorial Psalm is not a psalm at all. Canticles, which are poetic sections within books of the Bible that have a different literary structure of the book they are found in are also employed. An example is Mary’s Magnificat from Luke’s Gospel or the Song celebrating the liberation and exodus from Egypt in Exodus Chapter 15. Unlike the First Reading and Responsorial Psalm, the Second Reading is usually not thematically related to the Gospel but covers different books from the New Testament in sequence. The Gos-pel Acclamation is the Alleluia during Advent, Christmas, Ordinary time and Easter. An alternate form is used during Lent such as “Glory and praise to you Lord Jesus Christ” since omitting the joyful Alleluia keeps us more in line with the somber tone of Lent.

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: St. Maria Goretti Thursday: St. Augustine Zhao Rong and Companions Saturday: St. Benedict

CHURCH OFFICES The Church Office will re-open on Monday, July 6, 2020 and will still

observe the hours between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon on Saturday.

See Fr. Dennis’ new "Teaching Mass" on Parish Website

under Adult Confirmation Section.

Next comes the Gospel taken from Matthew, Mark, Luke or John. The deacon elevates the Book of the Gospels proclaimed by either a deacon or a priest. Before approaching the Book of the Gospels, the deacon bows and asks for a blessing from the priest who says: “May the Lord be in your heart and on your lips that you may proclaim his Gospel worthily and well.” To be continued! —Fr. Dennis

SHARE THE BURDEN “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I

will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). These words of our Savior seem to be in stark con-trast to the previous chapter from the same Gospel, when we were told that if we do not take up our crosses, we are not worthy of Christ. Connect-ing these two messages might help us on our faith journeys. Being a follower of Christ sure-ly means that we must em-

brace the cross, in its mystery of both suffering and tri-umph. This is something that we need not do alone, for the burden is often too heavy for us to carry by our-selves. Who, then, do we turn to? We can turn to the Body of Christ—the community of disciples gathered for worship. When we find the burden too heavy, let us re-member that we can share that burden with our Chris-tian sisters and brothers, who can help bring us rest. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PRAYER IN A TIME OF PANDEMIC

O God of compassion, your people are anxious in this time of pandemic.

Send your Holy Spirit among us to dispel our fears.

We cry out to you in our confusion; comfort us in our affliction.

Grant our leaders wisdom to guide us. Strengthen and sustain those who are ill,

and be with those who care for them. Help us to travel this road

in solidarity with our neighbors, with our eyes fixed on the salvation

promised us through the death and resurrection of your Son,

who is Lord forever and ever. Amen.

“Come Summer With Me”

Come summer with me, Lord; summer deep down in my soul;

restore my faith in summer’s time, in rest, in joy, in play, in you...

Summer in my heart, Lord, and dwell there

as if time would never end, as if all time were children's time, eternal time when school is always out and joy is ever in…

And let others summer in my shade, Lord, and share whatever summer’s peace is mine to give,

whatever summer’s light is mine to shed, whatever summer's warmth is mine to share...

Good God of every season and every day this week, come summer with me, Lord, and let the child in my heart

spend this summer in your love... Amen.

(A prayer by Fr. Austin Fleming who blogs at

“A Concord Pastor Comments.” Used with permission.)

PLEASE USE YOUR PRE-PRINTED ENVELOPES Registered members of the parish should be receiving a packet of contribution envelopes every month from St. Matthew. These envelopes have vital information printed on them to assist the staff in accurately posting and subsequently reporting your contributions at the end of the year. We are requesting that all parishioners make use of these convenient envelopes to facilitate our work here in the office. If on occasion, you do forget your envelope, please do one of the following: (1) Use the red and white envelope in the pew, being sure to write out your full name and address on the front of the envelope. Put your check or cash inside and drop it into the collection basket; or (2) You may also put a “loose check” (no envelope) in the basket provided that your checks have your name and address on them. St. Matthew cannot give credit or verification of donations made with “loose cash,” that is, cash which is not in a clearly marked envelope. Full name and address are important because of the large numbers of parishioners with similar names. We at St. Matthew are grateful for the generosity of our members. In addition, we would like to be of assistance to you when tax season comes around by providing you with an accurate accounting of your sacrificial giving. In order to accomplish this, we are in great need of your help in the ways outlined above. May God bless you for your continued support of our parish. Thank you very much.

Vacation time is when the highway departments close all the regular roads and open all the detours.
