Gordon Brow n: No evidence that MKO has given up terrorism

hideen organisation of Iran, which has beenproscribed in thiscountry. The pro-scribed organisation'sappeals commit teehave said that theyare not involved interrorism and that therefusal of the HomeSecre tary to de-proscribe them wasflawed, perverse andmust be set aside. Why does the Govern-ment not accept that?

Mr Brown: I havelooked at that issuethat you raise. It iscertainly, however, the case that the or-ganisation that youdescribe has been, inthe past, involved interrorist activity, andI do not think there isany doubt about theevidence that hasbeen the case. There-fore, to proscribe anorganisation that hasbeen involved in ter-rorist activity seemsthe right thing to doby the decisions of this Government to beconsistent with otherdecisions that wemake.Q98 Malcolm Bruce:We have acceptedsometimes that ter-rorist organisationscan change theirways?

Baroness Nichols on:Mojahedin Khalq Organisation (M KO) still onterrorist list in UK

    N EJAT N EWSLETTER P AG E 3

In an exclusive in-terview with PressTV, member of theHuman Rights Sub-committee of theEuropean Pa r l i a -ment, Emma Nichol-son, said that a spe-cial new court hasbeen convened anddecided that theBritish governmentacted in haste inputting the Mujahe-din Khalq Organiza-tion on the terroristlist.

EU lawmaker, EmmaNicholson has proclaimedthat a British court, notgovernment, believes inlifting the ban on MKOterrorist group.

In an exclusive interviewwith Press TV, member

of the Human RightsSubcommittee of theEuropean Parliament,Emma Nicholson, saidthat a special new courthas been convened anddecided that the Britishgovernment acted inhaste in putting the Mu-

jahedin Khalq Organiza-tion on the terrorist list.

Nicholson said the find-ings were that the Britishgovernment's actions onputting the MKO on thelist had not been carriedout properly.

"But the British govern-ment does not agree. The British government

    is appealing and is

    against that judgment,"she added.

Concerning the MKOpresence and operationsin Iraq, Nicholson saidthe sovereign nation of Iraq has to decide aboutthis terrorist group'spresence in the country.

    The situation requires a

dialogue between theIranian and Iraqi govern-ments, adding that theexpulsion of MKO mem-bers has nothing to dowith the US or UK forcesin Iraq.

When asked why Britainstill supports toughersanctions against Iran

with respect to IAEA andNIE reports proving thatIran is not involved in amilitary program, Nichol-son stated that Iran didnot fully explore theEuropean Union's offer in2006 which suggestedIran stop its uranium en-richment and in return, the European Unionwould lift sanctions.

In response to a ques-tion regarding the West'sincreasing pressure onIran to stop nuclear en-richment which is com-pletely in line with IAEAregulations, Nicholsonanswered, "There hasbeen a loss of confidenceon both sides - a loss of trust."

When asked if Britain isfollowing US policy andnot making independentchoices, Nicholson re-plied that Britain, Ger-many and France begannegotiations with Iranfrom a specifically Euro-pean Union position.

Asked if the InternationalAtomic Energy Agency isnot the legal referee in

decisions about Iran'snuclear case rather thanthe UN Security Council, she replied, "Because thenuclear issue is so im-portant, it has gone upto the Security Councillevel."

    Nejat Society, Tabriz Uni-versity, December 04, 2007

http://www.nejatngo.org/index_en.php?news_id=755 Gathering and Speeches inthe city of Tabriz in IranOn Tuesday 4th of Decem-ber 2007, a meeting washeld in the Law Departmentof Tabriz Islamic Free Uni-versity. The topic was"Brainwashing: Crimeagainst Humanity". The meeting started at1600 hours with the atten-

dance of hundreds of stu-dents and scholars. DrSamad Azizi the head of the Law Departmentopened the meeting andwelcomed the students andparticipants. He introducesthe presenters and dis-cussed the importance of the topic in the world to-day. Then Dr Hassan Movassaqia senior lecturer in the LawDepartment started hisspeech. He gave a back-ground of brainwashing inthe history and discussedits consequences on humanlife in details. He wentthrough many past exam-ples of brainwashing andshowed how it abuses hu-man rights and why it mustbe considered as a crimeagainst humanity. He sci-entifically showed the psy-chological aspects of brain-

washing and explained howsomeone could hold controlover other people's mindsand change their thoughtsand persuade them to dodeeds against their ownwill. He referred to theDavidian Cult lead by DavidKoresh in Waco in Texasand their final fate andcalled upon the Interna-tional community to adoptserious measures to tackle

    this global difficulty ur-gently.

The next presenter was MrEbrahim Khodabandeh aformer member of Mojahe-din-e Khalq Organisation(MKO) lead by the cultleader Mas'ud Rajavi. Hespoke about his experi-ences of 20 years member-ship in the MKO and gavemany examples of how aperson could practically bebrainwashed.

He mentioned that he hasbeen studying about cultsand their common tech-niques of thought reformssince he left the organisa-tion in 2003 and returnedto Iran. He went into de-tails of the process used bythe MKO and many othercults to manipulate theirmembers using psychologi-cal methods in order to re-cruit, preserve and controltheir followers.

He concluded that theleader of a cult is the onlyperson responsible for thecrimes committed by thecult and all followers arethemselves the prime vic-tims of the brainwashingpracticed inside the cult. Heexplained how followers of a cult are mentally capti-vated and why they see no

way out of their misery. Hetherefore concluded that

the followers must behelped and the leaders of all destructive cults mustlegally and internationallybe prosecuted and broughtagainst justice. Then Mr Arash Sametipuranother former member of the MKO started hisspeech. He too explainedhis own experiences withinthe Rajavi's Cult. He men-tioned that many former

members of MKO have or-ganised themselves into anN G O c a l l e d N e j a t(Salvation) Society andtheir aim is to free the pre-sent members held captivein the Ashraf Camp in Iraq. He emphasised that manyfamilies of members whoare brainwashed by theMKO are extremely worriedabout the destiny of theirbeloved ones and theyn e e d u r g e n t h e l p .In the end Mr Khodabandehand Mr Sametipur an-swered the students' nu-merous questions. Appar-ently the topic of the meet-ing and the speeches hadextremely drawn the atten-tion of the students. Theydemanded that more of such sessions be held in thefuture. This meeting fin-ished at 1830 hours. The students were ever so

eager to learn more aboutthe methods of brainwash-ing utilised inside the MKOand hours after the termi-nation of the meeting theyhad circled around the twoformer members and askedthem various questions. Some students showed in-terest to be in contact withthe Nejat Society. Somereporters and photogra-phers from the media were

    present in the meeting too.

supporting the revolution-ary government and havingfaith in God.They called on the Euro-pean delegation not to al-low the western warmon-gers to divide terrorism intogood and bad or providethe MKO with an opportu-nity to repeat its terroristoperations once again."If the MKO which em-

The Mohammadi family,Mostafa Mohammadi andMahbobeh arrived in campTIPF/(Camp Ashraf) in Iraqon December 6, 07.

On December 8, at 3:15local time , after constantrequests from US authority, they were able to meetwith their daughter,Somayeh, for 45 minutesd u r i n g w h i c h t i m eSomayeh, out of fear, re-fused to speak to her fatherbut talked to her motherand refused to acknowl-edge that she wants to

leave camp Ashraf and re-turn back to Canada.Somayeh , told them that she is in touch regularlywith his uncle, HassanHamzeh , an active mem-ber of MKO in Canada , ispassing information on herparents activities in Canadaon their collaboration withI.R.I. security services.

In our opinion since shedoes not have any legal

status in any country andthe Canadian governmentrefused to recognize herstatus so far she has beenconvinced that if she leavesthe camp she has only theoption of going back toIran.

However, on the morningof December 9 the U.S.forces in charge of TIPFasked the Mohammadi fam-ily to leave the camp sincethey met with their daugh-ter and received her an-swer to their plea. Follow-ing that, the Americans es-corted them to the gatesand let them out while stillwatching them from behindtheir gates. (mind you thatthe location of camp is in adeserted area with the clos-est access to a road andpublic transportation being6-7 kilometers away fromthe camp).

    As they started walking the

distance they were sud-denly confronted by a

group of people, confirmedmembers of MKO who areresiding in the adjacentcamp Ashraf under thewatch of American forces, who pretended to be pass-ing drivers and offeredthem a lift. Base on theirprior knowledge and ex-periences of the ways of

MKO, Mr. Mohammadi andhis wife refused to taketheir offer and kept walkingtowards the main road. Atthis point, realizing thatthey are vigilant about theintention of the MKO mem-bers, the guys grabbed Ms.Mohammadi by force andpushed her into a car trying

to kidnap her. When Mr.Mohammadi, who was atthe same time defendinghimself against their physi-cal attacks and also tryingto secure their bags sincethey were slashing them byknife and managed tobreak open their cameratrying to remove the mem-ory card by knife, startedshouting for help one of the

guys pulled a gun from un-der the driver's seat and

    put it on his head.

Realizing the seriousness of the situation the Americanswho were watching from ashort distance interferedand rescued them from thescene and arranged for aride to Baghdad for them

after making a report of what happened and alsokept their broken cameraas an evidence of the inci-dent. Though, the Ameri-cans were helpful in manyoccasions they were unableto answer the question of:how these people who aresupposed to be disarmedand confined inside the

camp are armed and freeto carry their operationsunder the authoritieswatch.

After arriving in BaghdadMr. Mohammadi and hiswife had to receive medicalattention to their injuriesand then started contactingthe authorities including

the Canadian Consul, Ms.Sonia Hooykaas in Jordan,

to report the situation. Atthe same time Ms.Hooykaas kindly informedour Centre that she will re-port the case to Ottawa andwill reflect our concerns re-garding this situation.

    Mohammadi family are still

in Iraq and trying all that ispossible to rescue theirdaughter from the MKOcamp/influence and alsotake a legal action againstthe leaders of MKO for allthe damages to their familyincluding this last case.

Since this is their 9th tripto Iraq since 2003 and thefamily has exhausted all itslimited resources in orderto free their child from theclutch of MKO they feel thatthey need to stay in Iraq inorder to finalize this impor-tant issue and bring peaceto the life of their shatteredfamily and other three chil-dren.

The failed abduction of a Canadian Iranian family in I raq by MKO

We urge every HumanRights organization as well

as the authorities of theCanadian and Americangovernment to use theirpower and influence to helpthis family.

For the full story onMohammadi family you canread the Stewart Bell s ar-ticles published by Nationalpost on Saturday, Septem-ber 23, 2006.

We also demand that thecase with the MKO be in-vestigated immediately andproper control be enforcedwith regards to violent andillegal activities of MKOmembers since the con-

tinuation of such acts en-dangers the reallocation of over 200 people, residentsof TIPF, who were also theprisoners of MKO and cur-rently recognized refugeesof the UNHCR.

In the past week eight peo-ple who were released fromTIPF in order to obtain visaand arrive in Turkey to con-tinue with their legal proce-

dure with the UNHCR forfinal reallocation have dis-appeared and there is nosign of them anywhere.

We hold MKO and AmericanForces and Iraqi govern-ment liable for the safety of the above people.

The Iranian Pen Club Letterto Ms Megevanal Roggo

International Committee ofthe Red Cross The MiddleEast DepartmentDear Ms Beaterice MegevandRoggo According to the news re-ceived in the last few days byIran-Ghalam (IRAN-PEN) as-sociation, the condition ofdisaffected members of Moja-hedin Khalq Organisationwho are now accommodatedin the TIPF part of Ashraf

Camp is critically dangerous. Some personalities have al-ready raised concern not theleast Mr. Mohammed Hasibiwho has written an open let-ter today, 21 December 2007raising his deep concernabout the situation of thesepeople. A copy of this letteris attached. You are aware that after thefall of the former Iraqi dicta-tor Saddam Hussein, andsince September 2003, TIPFwas established provisionallyalongside Ashraf Camp. Thepurpose was to locate thosewho defect the organisationat the first instance inter-views by the AmericanForces. In those days the to-tal number of people con-fined within the Ashraf Campwas 3855 while today only3450 are remaining there. From those defected mem-bers who managed to getthemselves to TIPF, more

that 350 have succeeded be-ing sent to their own country(Iran) or some Europeancountries with the help ofvarious governments, theInternational Committee ofthe Red Cross, and the Iraqiministry of human rights. Butunfortunately it is more thana year now that the processof freeing from the Camp the total number makes to

around 200 so far has beenstopped or intensely slowed

down. As you are aware, in variousreports by the Human RightsWatch, the European Union, the British Government, theUS State Department, the Ca-nadian Foreign office, andmany other sources as wellas the worldwide media, thedeeds and practices of theMKO and its leader Mas'udRajavi have been categorisedas terrorist, cultic, and violat-ing the bases of humanrights. Some documentationis enclosed to this letter inthis regards. Therefore, weurge you to pay attention toour concerns as well asthose of the families of theMKO members for the des-tiny of our offspring, our sib-lings, our spouses, and ourfriends who are held in Ash-raf Camp by a destructivecult. Those who have de-fected from the organisationand are held at the Tempo-

rary International PresenceFacilities (TIPF), as well asthose who for any reasonhave not been able to flee theMKO and are still kept in theirbase, must be protected bythe ICRC and the World Dec-laration for Human Rights;and we urge you to help themby any means you can. It is also worth mentioningthat the MKO is consideringthe freedom of its membersand their departure from Iraqas a grave threat to its exis-tence and consider it as anencouragement to the re-maining members to defectthis terrorist cult. It is essential to point out thefact that the Amnesty Interna-tional (AI) has expressed itsconcern over the events car-ried out inside the AshrafCamp. Also, the HumanRights Watch (HRW) has is-

The Iranian Pen Club Letter to Ms Megevanal Roggo sued a report on 18 May 2005which points out many cases

of systematically violatinghuman rights inside the MKOsince 2002. The report doneby the HRW is based on theformer members' testimoniesnow living in Europe. A copyof the report is enclosed You are aware that self-immolations done by somemembers in European capi-tals after the arrest of theirleader Maryam Rajavi in Parison 17 June 2003, is one obvi-ous example of the kind. Likeall cults, this organisationneeds a remote site to beable to isolate the membersfrom the outside world. Theresidents of Ashraf Camphave no contact with the realworld, not even with theirrelatives or old friends. Themembers are forced to par-ticipate in the daily ideologi-cal sessions called "the Cur-rent Operation". In these ses-sions members are system-atically subject to peer pres-

sure and coercion methods. According to articles 25 and26 of the fourth convention ofGeneva which had enabledthe MKO's presence in Iraq, the members could freelyhave contact with their fami-lies. But unfortunately, boththe members and their wor-ried and suffering familieshave been deprived fromsuch benefits. Therefore, weinsist that the pressure bemounted against the MKO tolift any obstacles. The IranianPen Club has become awarethrough its correspondingabout the efforts made by theIraqi ministry of human rightsfor preventing the violation ofhuman rights within theMKO. We would be more thatpleased to learn that wecould benefit from your co-operation and assistance too.We are prepared to hand over

Mojahedin Khalq supporter "Struan Stevenson" underminesefforts to promote democratic Values

    N EJAT N EWSLETTER P AG E 10

Many of us remember the Iraqiexile groups whose tall tales theAdministration used to justifythe invasion of their country in2003. Fewer people are awarethat similar groups from other Middle Eastern countries fre-quent the halls of Congress andeditorial board rooms carryingtheir frightening ghost-written

books with guidance from pro-war think tanks. The organizedchallenge against the 2007 Na-tional Intelligence Estimate(NIE) summary on Iran thismonth included such a group, which for years cried wolf about Iran. The NIE's critics are complain-ing that it falsely weakens theBush administration's campaignagainst Iran. Trusting that Iranis not developing nuclear weap-ons is suicidal, warn the neo-conservatives who promptedthe invasion of Iraq in search of imaginary banned weapons. Asin the period that preceded theIraq War, the hawks are nowvalidated by an exile entitydedicated to violent regimechange. The Iranian enabler group that has replaced the oldIraqi National Congress is the

National Council of Resistanceof Iran (NCRI). In cooperationwith leading neoconservative

figures, NCRI has for over adecade spared no effort to de-stroy any chance of a U.S.-Iranian dtente.Eight days after the NIE sum-mary assured the world thatIran is not developing nuclear weapons at this time interna-tional media reported that

NCRI dismissed the report'sfindings. No other Iranian op-

position group has activelychallenged the new NIE's credi-

bility.Going even farther, NCRI'sWashing ton spokesman ,Alireza Jafarzadeh, claimedthat Iran's nuclear program ismanaged by the Iranian Revo-lutionary Guard Corp's (IRGC)scientists during a Fox Newsinterview. As the most trusted

branch of Iran's armed forces, the IRGC was late this year designated by the White Houseas a sponsor of internationalterrorism. The exile group hasalso echoed the Washingtonwar party's claims that Iran isarming Iraqi resistance groupswith advanced weapons result-ing in U.S. casualties.

NCRI's scare campaign againstIran is an attempt to overcomeits own infamy. The "Council"is a front group based in Parisfor the Mojahedin-e Khalgh

Organization (known also asMEK, MKO, or PMOI), ac-cording to the U.S. State De-

It fledIran in the mid 1980s andfought on the Iraqi side duringthe Iran-Iraq war, hoping tooverthrow the young IslamicRepublic. Its campaign todeepen Western distrust of Iranis motivated primarily by thereal possibility that its key fig-ures will face capital crimescharges in Iraq and Iran if aU.S. accommodation with Iranends the militia's utility to U.S.strategists as a bargaining chip. The latest sign of MEK's vul-nerability emerged December 16 when Iran asked that thenext round of U.S.-Iran nego-tiations in Baghdad addressMEK's status. Groups like the ones thatsold the Iraq war still fre-quent the halls of Congresswith plenty of guidancefrom pro-war think tanks.

Like the old Iraqi NationalCongress headed by AhmadChalabi, the MEK has powerfulconservative backers in West-ern capitals that promote it as ademocratic alternative. InWashington, these have in-cluded John Ashcroft, Dick Armey, Richard Perle, andmembers of Congress IleanaRos-Lehtinen and Tom Tan-credo, all of whom were andremain advocates of the Iraqinvasion. Among officially des-ignated foreign terrorist organi-zations, MEK is the only onethat can obtain street demon-stration permits in Washingtonthrough its thinly disguisedfront operations. Poster-size

portraits of the husband andwife team that have headedMEK for a generation are inabundance at such rallies, in-cluding one held on the

    grounds of U.S. Congress in2004.

The surest way for the MEK tostay in business appears to be

just the path they are following. They need to make themselvesindispensable to the warmon-gers in the United States byhelping subvert accommodationwith Iran. (In this, they sharethe predicament of their neoconmasters, who will be out of a

job if peace prevails for toolong.)

If Washington decides againstan all out war on Iran and optsinstead for a "low intensity con-flict," as Ronald Reagan's warsof attrition in Central Americacame to be known, the MEK can well be the core of a Con-tra-style mercenary force.Claiming the mantle of the"Reagan Revolution," the neo-conservatives would certainly

welcome that as the next bestthing to the war that they want badly even after the NIElargely vindicated Iran. Therehave been persistent rumorsover the past year that Ameri-can military or intelligenceagencies have trained selected

If, on the other hand, the Bushadministration or its successor chooses sustained dialog in-stead of confrontation withIran, the future of the MEK willnever be far from the minds of Iranian negotiators. The WhiteHouse has stressed its twin ob-

jectives of strengthening thegovernment of "liberated" Iraqand limiting Tehran's influencethere. Iranian leaders see aninherent contradiction in that

policy. They are anxious to findout whether the U.S. will con-tinue to shelter the MEK as anirritant to Iran or will transfer custody of the militia to Iran'strusted Iraqi authorities as anaffirmation of Iraqi sover-eignty. As Washington preparesfor its next round of talks onIraqi security with Iran in Janu-ary, a sure way it can build con-fidence would be to agree todiscuss this sensitive matter.
