Young people from across the Northern Grampians Shire wowed the

audience at the Y Factor talent show at the Stawell Entertainment

Centre on Friday night April 15. The event, held as part of national

Youth Week celebrations show-cased some fabulous local talent,

including young Elle who stole hearts with her singing and dancing.

Stawell Neighbourhood House partnered with Stawell Secondary

College in a project called Art as Fashion. Led by Jenny

Greenberger, groups of students used recycled materials to design

an outfit which was modelled by one of the group at Y-Factor.

Neighbourhood News April 2016

Stawell Neighbourhood House was

approached by Stawell Community

Garden to discuss the possibility of a

collaboration as a fund-raising activity

for the Garden. Denis Crawford, a

Pomonal local and world-renowned

entymologist, agreed to volunteer his

time and presented a seminar about

“good” bugs in the garden on Saturday

April 16. It was a cool but sunny

morning when a small group of avid

gardeners gathered to hear Denis talk

about garden pests and diseases and

beneficial insects in our gardens.

Did you know? One of the best

ways to attract good bugs to your

vegetable garden is to grow flowers

alongside your veges. Flowers are

very good at attracting insects which

will then feed on aphids and other

nuisance bugs.

Stawell Community Gardens will hold

a regular Open Garden on the 3rd

Sunday of each month 3pm-5pm.

Members of the Garden will be present

and most willing to provide gardening

advice. Everyone is welcome to come

and enjoy a social time for members

and non-members and excess

produce will be available for sharing.

School Holiday Program Stawell and Budja Budja, Hall’s Gap

+

“We ran seven sessions over the

second week of the school holidays.

The decision to only offer activities for

the second week of the school holidays

was predominately due to the number

of activities happening in both Halls

Gap and Stawell during the Easter

week. Five sessions were run at

Stawell including Making Spiders, T-

shirt Printing, Drawing from Nature,

Cooking for Fun and Chill Out and two

sessions in Halls Gap - Cooking for Fun

and Drawing from Nature.

We had 20 families book in for the

program with 33 individual children - 60

participants in total for all the sessions.

It was great that the numbers for the

sessions held at Budja Budja were well

up on the previous programs. This is in

part getting the program out to the

schools earlier and personal contact

with families.

A great outcome for the program was

the wonderful volunteers, staff and

carers who assisted in making the

program such a success. Special

thanks to Sarah Garton, Michelle

Fletcher, Lee-Anne Lovett and

Judy Nolan for their practical

support. I would also like to thank

Jenny Greenberger for her

continued support of the program

whilst we try to secure further

funding.

Two mums advised us they were

very happy that their children were

comfortable to be left with us rather

than requiring their mums to be

present. A step towards

independence for these children

and a little freedom for the mums.

It was also interesting that we had

visits from teenagers to SNH who

did not participate in the program

but was happy to spend a little time

at the Neighbourhood House

chilling out and playing pool. I

think that it is a credit to Jenny

Greenberger and Sarah Garton

that these young people are

comfortable in meeting at the SNH

and respecting the rules once

explained to them.

My personal highlight was getting

through the Cooking for Fun at

Budja Budja with 11 participants

mostly around 6 years old. They

had a great time and took home

some yummy goodies. I also think

the cubby made by the children

attending the Chill Out session was

the best ever. Photographs are

available on the website and

facebook page. Check them out

they will make you smile.”

- sodales.

The T-Shirt printing was not for

the faint-hearted! There were

many skills to learn –

designing your t-shirt graphics,

searching for appropriate

images on the internet, saving

the image to a Word

document, printing the image

onto transfer paper, ironing the

transfer onto a t-shirt. Given

the group were aged from 6

years to 12 years this was

challenging. As always the

children were enthusiastic and

patient and showed some

remarkable artistic ideas and

abilities and thoroughly

enjoyed the challenge.

“Fashion is

not a style,

it’s a

statement”.

Mac Goodwin in a recycled wedding dress which has been tie-dyed. Note the lovely French roll in her hair which the students learnt how to fashion.

Isy Skene in a multi-coloured mini-dress and velvet jacket accessorized with a black belt.

A $2000 grant was secured by SNH and provided funding for the project.

The Italian phrase Ancora Imparo has been

attributed to Michelangelo, the famous Italian sculptor

and artist, who apparently uttered the words in 1562

on his 87th birthday. Translated, Ancora Imparo

means Still I learn or I am always learning.

And so it is for all of us more than 450 years later.

Much of our learning happens in the course of daily

living. For instance I have learnt many things since

moving from the city to the Stawell area some 15

months ago – little did I know about growing fruit trees

and the secret procreation business going on in

gardens - who would have thought you needed two

plum trees to make fruit? Although there are some

things I’ve yet to learn – for instance how does one

get rid of a flying fruit bat out of your bedroom at 3

am?

Other learning can take a little more effort –

identifying what you would like to learn and finding a

way of doing it and quite often you can learn much

about yourself in the process. Stawell

Neighbourhood House provides many opportunities

for learning. This year I have started learning Tai Chi

and am going along to the monthly Writer’s Group. I

have also attended some fabulous creative classes

that taught me skills to make mosaics and jewellery.

I have noticed, however, that access to formal post-

secondary and adult education is limited in regional

areas (a discussion for another time) so I’ve started

exploring learning opportunities online via the

internet and have discovered the world of MOOCs.

What’s a MOOC? A massive open online course

(MOOC) is a free web-based distance learning

program that is designed for the participation of

large numbers of geographically dispersed

students. A MOOC may be patterned on a college

or university course or may be less structured.

In addition to traditional course materials such as

filmed lectures, readings, and quizzes many

MOOCs provide interactive user forums to support

community interactions among students and

instructors.

Who can enrol? Anybody with a computer and

internet access. MOOCS are not accredited

courses (ie they don’t count count towards a formal

qualification) and whilst the course is free you can

buy a certificate of completion for $65

Are you learning online and need help? Stawell Neighbourhood House can provide face-to-face support. Either technical or

content help is available.

Because I’m interested in art I have enrolled in a

course offered by the University of Melbourne

called Sexing the Canvas: Art and Gender

which started on 18 April and runs for 9 weeks.

Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, The Banquet of Cleopatra, 1744

(Melbourne: National Gallery of Victoria)

The blurb for the course states “What do paintings

tell us about sex? How is art gendered? In this

course we will study some of the world’s most

beloved pictures guided by expert curators and art

historians who step outside of the square, bringing

a gendered reading to the masterpieces …”.

Some MOOCS are self-paced – for example I’ve

also enrolled in a course called Modern Art and

Ideas offered by the Museum of Modern Art in

New York. This one I complete (or not) in my own

time.
