    The NEBOSH Technical Certificate in Oil and Gas Operational Safety covers the principles of process safety management in the oil and gas industries. The syllabus takes a risk management approach based on best practice and international industry standards.

    The course covers: Safety and environmental management in this industry Hydrocarbon process safety Fire protection and emergency response

    The Unit is a taught unit assessed by one two-hour written examination. The written examination consists of ten short-answer questions and one long-answer question. All questions are compulsory. Candidate scripts are marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH.

    Our Partner, JRL Solutions Ltd provides consultancy advice and training in occupational health, hygiene and safety to solve a wide range of issues for organisations. JRL Solutions Ltd is an accredited NEBOSH training centre, who have provided successful NEBOSH courses in many parts of the world. They work extensively with NEBOSH as examiners and in several other capacities. This ensures that the people who attend their courses can benefit from this experience because JRL Solutions Ltd know what it takes to achieve to the highest levels. A variety of training methods are used, which recognise that people are individuals who respond in different ways. These methods include interactive work carried out in groups based on the NEBOSH syllabus; question and answer sessions; focused assignments carried out as homework and mock examinations.     ABOUT THE TUTOR: Mr Peter Brookbank MSc, CSP Peter Brookbank is an independent consultant from Bristol, UK with a Masters Degree (MSc) in Occupational Safety and Health from Bristol University, England and the NEBOSH Post Graduate Diploma (Parts 1 & 2) as well as a Post Graduate Certificate in Education.

    Peter is a Member of the Occupational Safety and Health Consultants Register, a Qualified Further Education Teacher and has been a Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) since they achieved Chartered status. Prior to that he was a Registered Safety Practitioner. Peter has been advising clients in the UK Manufacturing and Oil and Gas sector in one way or another for the past 12 years on issues ranging from Behaviour Based Safety and Safety Management Systems as well as Accident Management, Asbestos, Legionella, Machinery Guarding and compliance with European Health and Safety Directives. Peter also liaises on behalf of clients with the Enforcing Authorities (HSE, EA and Local Authority) should there be a visit from an Inspector or a problem in this area. Prior to working as an independent consultant Peter worked for the Engineering Employers Federation (EEF) as Principal Consultant and Lead Tutor and before that was a Regional QHSE Manager with Rolls-Royce Aerospace in the Facilities and Services Management Sector. Currently Peter is involved in delivering the NEBOSH International Technical Certificate in Oil and Gas Operational Safety to clients both overseas and in the UK and over the past two years he has been involved in the delivery of the NEBOSH International Diploma and the NEBOSH International Certificate at the KPO Oil and Gas Extraction Facility in Aksay, Kazakhstan. As part of his consultancy portfolio Peter assisted contractor organisations at the KPO site to achieve accreditation to OHSAS18001 and ISO14001.

    Explain the purpose of and procedures for investigating incidents and how the lessons learnt can be used to improve health and safety in the oil and gas industries

    Explain the hazards inherent in oil and gas arising from the extraction, storage, and processing of raw materials and products

    Explain the purpose and content of safety cases and safety reports in the oil and gas industries

    Day 2: Element 2: Hydrocarbon Process Safety 1 On completion of this element, candidates should be able to demonstrate understanding of the content through the application of knowledge to familiar and unfamiliar situations. In particular they should be able to:

    Explain the principles of assessing and managing contractors, including the roles of parties involved

    Outline the tools, standards, measurement, competency requirements and controls applicable to Process Safety Management (PSM) in the oil and gas industries

    Explain the importance of safe plant operation and maintenance of hydrocarbon containing equipment and processes

    Outline the controls available to maintain safety critical equipment

    Day 4: Element 4: Fire protection and emergency response On completion of this element, candidates should be able to demonstrate understanding of the content through the application of knowledge to familiar and unfamiliar situations. In particular they should be able to:

    Outline appropriate control measures to minimise the effects of fire and explosion in the oil and gas industries

    Outline the principles, procedures and resources for effective emergency response
