These are the people you will rely on to help you through. • Have a goal in mind. • To be motivated you need to know why you are doing something in the first place – only then will you achieve your success. Homework Club Homework Club program continues this year, any student can go to the Library on Tuesdays and Wednesdays starting from after school until 6.00pm. During this time, students can work individually or in small groups. The program has absolutely no cost to students and there is no requirement to attend every week or for any set period of time, just show up and study! In attendance is a small team of tutors, led by Homework Club Coordinator Nina Pascoe, who work with the students as required to assist guide and provide any support they need. Term one was extremely busy as our new students familiarised themselves with the Senior College environment and our students moving from Year 11 to 12 dealt with heightened expectations.

We value a calm, orderly focussed environment for our students so they can set about the task of achieving their goals and making the most of the last two years of schooling. Students this year have quickly shown they are capable of demonstrating the required behaviours on a consistent basis.

Overwhelmingly the student body has made a fantastic start to the year.

StaffingI would like to wish Mr David Priest all the best as he is on Long Service Leave until Semester 2.

We are excited that Nina Pascoe (many will know from homework club and her many years’ experience in the district) will be replacing David during his leave.

Rae Gibbons will be retiring at the end of Term 1. Rae has been a valued member of Mildura Senior College for 37 years. During which she has been dedicated to improving the outcomes for her students and supporting her colleagues. The Mathematics Faculty will greatly miss her knowledge and experience as will we right across the College. We wish Rae and her husband Paul, who is a teacher at Irymple Secondary College all the best in their retirement.

Mildura Senior College Council 2017It is with pleasure that I announce the following new members to our College Council for 2017; Merryl Whyte and Andrea Rose Parent Representatives.

We highly value the support and input from our College Council and are fortunate to have people of such high calibre who are continually prepared to be members of our College Council.

Also for 2017, Mr John Bergin will continue in the role of College Council President. I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge College Council member, Dr Phillip Webster who will not be returning to the College Council this year. Student AbsencesA student absence for part of a day or all day, including late to school or leaving early must be approved. The following are all accepted by the Department.

All absences can be verified by one of the following:

• Compass: Parent Portal (www.milsen.vic.edu.au)• Compass: Parent App (Compass School Manager)

• Email: [email protected]• Phone: 5021 2911 Option 1 (answering machine is on 24/7)• Medical certificate• Appointment card or notification• A signed and dated note with student full name

It is important for you to call the College for anything that requires our attention.

If your student is absent for a SAC they MUST notify the school immediately and get a Medical Certificate to be eligible to re sit the SAC for a score at an alternative time.

New Student KioskThe student kiosks will be operational from the start of term two.

There are three kiosks around the College. They are located at the Front Office, Student Services Centre and the Trade Training Centre.

Students need to use ONE of the three Kiosks to:

1. Sign In If you are late to school for a scheduled class

2. Sign Out If you are leaving before the last bell ie. During your study period at the end of the day.

3. Sign in and Out If you are leaving for appointments during the day and will miss class time. Don’t forget to sign back in.

The Student Kiosks are replacing the sign in and sign out sheets in the Student Services Centre. Students can sign in and out from any of the 3 kiosks.

Attendance Achieving success at Mildura Senior College begins with students coming to school EVERY DAY.

Each day a student misses, puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes. As Year 11 and 12 are particularly demanding in their workload it is strongly recommended that families do not arrange holidays, trips or appointments during the school terms or the school day.

This can cause undue stress on your student trying to catch up with the classwork. Assessment tasks are held continually throughout the year on scheduled days. Students absent from assessment tasks must supply a doctor’s certificate to be eligible to sit the assessment task for a score. If a student has been absent for a period of time due to a family activity the assessment task/s need to be completed as soon as they return.

Careers CentreI conduct career interviews throughout Terms 1, 2 and 3 with year 12 students from the nineteen Pathways groups. I book in students a pathway group at a time although any student can come in

and made their own appointments to see me to discuss tertiary education possibilities.

If your son or daughter would like to see me, they can come to the Careers Centre and make an appointment, or email me at: [email protected]

Sports ReportChess

The College had 10 young men signed up to play Chess for the College this year – 5 from each year level.

The tournament was held at Trinity Lutheran College and saw Mildura Senior College victorious in a landslide.

Whilst all players contributed to the win, the following players were given a medal and presented with an Award. Tyler Rose, Liam Davidson, Caglayan Gurbuz, Jeremiah Dawe and Heneli Tahalo.

Others who contributed to the victory consisted of Dylan Humphrey, Kwan Kinnersly, Riley Wood, Ryan Gustilo and Jake Barker.

Andrew Banks Coach

Girls Cricket

Our girls cricket team consisted of a fantastic group of girls!! One Year 12 student Laicy Rogerson – Captain and the rest are Year 11s.

We only had one game to play which is usually the hardest against Bendigo Senior Secondary College.

We lost the toss that we would have preferred to win on a very wet ground and were sent in to bat. I thought I overheard Bendigo say that they only had three players that do not play cricket so the confidence level (and the official cricket gear) from Bendigo was fairly high.

Their bowling was quick but our batting was impressive with smart batting from our openers Laicy Rogerson and Tara Martin, they were scoring 6 and over.

Laicy top scored with about 30 with a total of 98 and Tara Martin, Vhilla Evans, Jacqui Fleri, Tarsha Hawley, Alanah Cavallaro and Hayley Crowhurst backed it up with some very unselfish batting.

At least I think they did well as I was busy trying to coach and score.

It is really important that students REGULARLY access and read the compass home page announcements on the school intranet, to ensure that they don’t miss out on information sessions that may help them decide on their future pathways.

Year 12 students and their parents, have attended an information session run by the University of Adelaide held on Tuesday, 21st and Wednesday, February 22nd. 20 students and 32 parents attended the sessions and discovered the courses that the University offers, its Scholarships program, what accommodation is available, and the student services that are available to assist them in their transition.

Year 12 students have just attended two similar information sessions offered by the University of South Australia on Monday, 6th and Wednesday, 8th March. 20 parents and 12 students attended the sessions. UNISA was able to explain how they build into their courses of study hands-on experience of 30%. UNISA aim to make their students work ready. Come and collect booklets from the Careers Centre if you missed attending the session.

Career Notices and Career News items are posted on the Career Noticeboard in the foyer of the library and on noticeboards in the Student Centre and at the end of wing M (Mathematics classrooms). Careers notices are also posted on the Compass school intranet homepage. A ‘CareerNews’ newsletter is now being posted at the Mildura senior college careers website under the menu heading IMPORTANT INFO. Log into the website to check upcoming events as well. Students have been completing their Interests survey, Skills and Abilities and work values tasks this term. They are also completing a Career Action Plan.

Hands Up Mallee exists to change that. To help our community be a place where everyone can be their best, where kids have a great start to life and can learn so that they thrive, where families are healthy, safe and feel like they belong.

We can make this happen if people like you get involved. We need to know what issues and ideas you think we should focus on together so we can create a plan and make it happen.

What can you do? Answer the questions in this Kit or use it to have a conversation with family, friends and colleagues about the issues and your ideas for change.

Our bowling was more than impressive. Our first wicket was not until about the 12th over, however the bowling was on the spot and kept the run rate low.

Alanah Cavallaro bowled four overs with 1 for 10. Tara got a double wicket maiden. Tarsha Hawley bowled her tidy four overs out early then got on a train to come home for a netball grandfinal.

Laicy Rogerson and Emma Martin completed the attack and Jacqui Fleri was awesome behind the stumps. We kept Bendigo to 78 which will see us play someone in the quarter finals on Monday 27th March.

Well one Girls, it was a great day.

Deanne Marr Coach

Boys CricketThe boys tried valiantly to overcome a target of 138 set by Maryborough (thanks to a cracking innings by Castlemaine lad Will Collicoate of 83 runs) but were eventually unsuccessful.

It looked like we were going to win- 3 overs remaining and 28 runs to get- with captain Paddy Keogh in fine form and hitting the ball a mile. However, a miscommunication led to Paddy being run out- and we just couldn't keep the run rate needed going.

Final ScoresMaryborough 2/138 def MSC 6/120 after 20 overs.Best: P. Keogh 60; J. Graham 2/34 (4 overs)

The friendly against St Mary of the Angels saw us establish a target of 119 for the Angels to surpass. In a surprisingly good game considering there was no title to play for, St Marys eventually won with 5 balls to spare. This was a game played

in great spirit by our boys, several of whom sat out to let those who didn't get a chance to play in the first game do so.

This is an excellent team. Only 2 Year 12 boys played and the remainder were Year 11s.

I have no doubt that next year they are going to give the competition a real nudge! I would like to thank Deanne Marr and Emma Broadbent for their great work in helping me get things together, and in particular Harry Ryan (Year 12) and Ben Symes who did an OUSTANDING job not only scoring, but talking through and helping the opposing teams' scorers in learning the ropes on this difficult task.

Both the coaches of Maryborough and St Mary's complimented the boys on their young adult behaviour, which made me a proud man indeed.

Thankyou to all staff in supporting this fine group of young men.
