Getting off to a good start in Semester 2We are now at the point in the year when all students are about to complete their Semester 1 studies and start their Semester 2 studies. As always, I would urge those who have been working well to continue the good habits you have established. Attending all classes, being at classes on time and prepared and completing all set work are the basics that set you up for a successful semester of learning. For those students who had an indifferent Semester 1, take the opportunity to turn things around as early as possible.

The importance of the Mid-Year Exam periodDuring the changeover between Semesters the majority of students will be sitting examinations at the College. It is essential

that students understand the importance of this process as it will give them invaluable experience under real exam conditions. All examinations are compulsory and students are expected to attend and be present for the entirety of their exam. All students who study a Unit 3/4 VCE subject have to also sit the GAT, (General Achievement Test). Students received specific details about the exam period through their pathways classes.

Premier’s VCE Awards 2016 recipients; Congratulations Madeline Barker and Jayden ByrneOn Thursday 28th April 2016, two Mildura Senior College students who completed their studies in 2015, were presented with Premier’s VCE Awards at a ceremony at the Crown Palladium in Melbourne. Jayden Byrne received a Premier’s VCE Award for being

one of the state’s top performers in Studio Arts. Madeline Barker received two Premier’s VCE Awards for being one of the state’s top performers in both Outdoor & Environmental Studies and also Australian History.

The results both students achieved are obviously a reflection on their own ability, hard work and dedication, but also reflects on the high quality support they received from their teachers of these subjects and also any other teachers who had an influence on them both throughout their schooling. Assistant Principals' ReportYear 11 Subject SelectionsAll students wishing to change a year 11 subject were asked to submit their Change of Subject Form to the Student Services Centre by Friday 13th May. We have currently been working hard to try and place all students in the new chosen subjects with minimal disruption to their program.

If a student submitted their form on time and the change WAS able to occur as requested, you will receive a text message on May 26th to inform you that this change has occurred. The successful students will also receive an updated information including booklist during pathways on this day.

If a student submitted their form on time and the change WAS NOT able to occur, you will need to come to subject change night to see if a late change can happen unless otherwise notified.

If a student handed in their forms late or are still planning on changing a subject, you will need to come to subject change night on May 31st to see if any changes can be accommodated unless otherwise notified

Students whose changes occur at Subject Selection night will receive their new booklists on the night. All students will receive their new timetables at the beginning of Semester Two

Tertiary Trips (year 11 and 12)The Year 12 Tertiary Trips will be occurring from Tuesday 7th June - Thursday 9th June. Trips will leave at the completion of the GAT. The trip to Melbourne is already at capacity but places are still available for the Adelaide Trip. The timing of this trip is to avoid students missing any classes and is a great opportunity to see what might be available in each of these cities.

The Year 11 Tertiary Trips will be occurring from Wednesday 31st August to Friday 2nd September. Bookings will open for these trips at the beginning of Semester Two. Once again we will be going to Melbourne and Adelaide. Please note there WILL NOT be a Year 12 Tertiary Trip next year as we are moving these trips to the Year 11 level only.

Becoming more employableAll of the subjects offered at the Year 11 and 12 level aim to build both skills and knowledge in specific areas. However to be 'employable' in today's job market, employers are looking for also evidence of personal skills like citizenship and generic employability skills. I encourage you to assist students to use holiday and other time wisely to not only study but also volunteer somewhere to prove high levels of key competencies like communication, leadership and organisation skills as well as personal traits like empathy, reliability and initiative. Ideas could include assisting a local sporting club in the canteen, or coaching or playing music for community clubs. This will also provide a great opportunity to obtain greater networks and people who are able to be a referee for you when trying to gain full time employment or some college applications.

The GATThe General Achievement Test is a 3 hour test that is not curriculum based. The focus is on

•Written communication, •Mathematics, Science and Technology •Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences

This year it is on Tuesday 7th June from 10am to 1:15pm. All students completing a Unit 3 & 4 subject are required to attend. This test is a very important 'back up' if unforeseen circumstances arrive at end of year exam times. Students are currently receiving information about the GAT in Pathways this week and next. More information can be found at http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Pages/vce/exams/gat/aboutgat.aspx

ValuablesParents and students are reminded that the College is not insured against damage to or theft of valuables. Students bring these items to school at their own risk. Parents are advised to check with their insurance company to ascertain if coverage is available. Students should lock all valuables in their locker and not leave items unattended.

Student Learning Profile (SLP) 4 and Semester ReportsThis is our final SLP for the semester and was available on-line from May 26. Parents should have accessed this to ensure that students were on track to pass all subjects. We do not mail all SLP's home due to the extended delays with local mail deliveries. ALL SLP's are available through our Parent Portal on Compass.

Staff will commence writing formal semester reports very soon. These will be posted home on June 24 and can be viewed on-line as well.

Our data shows that we still have a significant number of parents who have not accessed our portal at all. This can be done via a computer or smartphone - please call 50212911 and Select Option 5 if you require assistance.

Parent/Student/Teacher Conference 3These were held on May 16, with a steady number of parents and students meeting with teachers. Having said that, not all teachers were fully booked and we certainly encourage all parents to meet with teachers at these conferences. Our next (and final) PST for 2016 is on Monday August 22.

Belinda Hudak, Mark Tracy,Deanne Marr (Acting)Assistant Principal

Parent ReminderA reminder to parents and visitors to the College, that upon arrival we ask that you please present to reception at the front office.

Business Management Australian Vintage Winery TourOver 60 Year 12 Business Management Students attended the excursion to Australian Vintage Winery on Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th May. This was part of “Outcome 3 – The Operations Management Function”. Students attended both the Baronga and Merbein sites; to view how they process grapes, store the wine and package into bottles and containers ready to be sent to Australia and around the globe. They were also exposed to how both sites use ethical and socially responsible practices, the use of technology within the organisations operations and learnt how Australian Vintage use competitive advantage to be one of Australian largest winery produces.

Student AchievementsStudent Achiever – Brooke LauderBrooke was recently awarded the Young Artist Award by the Mildura Rural City Council. Nominated by a friend, Brooke was recognised for her work in Venturers, ELT and Sunraysia Gang Show. Part of the process involved Brooke being interview by a panel about her involvement and achievements to date. Brooke received her award in the presence of her family, all of whom were very excited. After finishing her VCE, Brooke hopes to study Arts in Melbourne, majoring in Creative Writing.

Well Done Brooke!!

Australian Business Week is seeking mentors and sponsors

From Monday 8th to Friday 12th August approximately 75 of our Business Management students will be participating in Australian

Business Week. During the week students will be broken into companies (teams) where together they will operated a simulated multi-million dollar hotel, produce a product and a 30 second TV commercial, make speeches to their shareholders, put together a trade display and participate in team building activities.

Throughout the week we like students to work with mentors from the business community who will offer advice on such things as making decisions about running their business or marketing their product. We like to have two mentors per team so that the role can be shared throughout the week and so that at least one mentor will be available for a period each day to assist the students.

Mentors can be current or retired business people who have a few hours that they could spare during the week to act as a team mentor. They can be parents, grandparents, relatives or family friends of past or present students. Assistance will be available from the ABW co-ordinators throughout the week and from past experience students are happy to accept advice from mentors no matter how little time they have to spend with the team.

The location this year for the program is the Mildura Grand Hotel in Seventh Street.

We are also looking for sponsors to help support the program by way of cash donations to help cover costs or goods/vouchers to be used as prizes for the awards to be given out at the presentation evening on Friday 12th August.

If you are interested help us out by being a mentor or sponsorship or know someone that may be interested please call Lorene Dunstan on 5021 2911, or email [email protected].

TennisOn the 2nd May both our boys and girls tennis teams competed in the LMR region tennis finals at Mildura Lawn Tennis Club.

Our Girls team consisting of Laicy Rogerson, Emily Carfora, Madelyn Leeson and Eliza Hill had an exceptional day winning through to the State Finals after a close win over Bendigo Senior and Rochester.

The Boys team consisting of Jake Barker, Troy Kelly, Lachlan Prothero and Thomas Moore also had a successful day putting Bendigo Senior out of the competition but having narrow losses to both Bendigo Catholic College and Saint Mary of The Angel from Nathalia.

Well done to both teams and we had many comments from other school staff on how well our students conduct themselves when representing our school, which is fantastic.

Gary GibsonCoach

Cross CountryOn Wednesday 25th May, we had 5 students that competed at the Cross Country which was held at Apex Park. Erika Florez won the over 17 girls with a time of 11.17 minutes which was fantastic.

Christian Jackson and Louis Val ran well and qualified. Claudia Tatchell finished well and April Goldring had an unfortunate fall and did not complete the course.

Erika has qualified to compete in St Arnaud at the Regional Competition.

It was a fantastic day and managed to miss most of the rain.

Barb KellyCoach

Girls Hockey On Monday 23rd May the Senior Girls Hockey Regional final took place in Bendigo. The team consisted of Jade Chapman, Ruby Chant, Kimmy Barker, Hanna Harvey, Talanoa Fonoa, Catherine Smith, Jessica Penna, Jessica Barko, Samantha Massey, Kiara Brown and Courtney Sandiman. The girls had one game to play against Bendigo Senior College. After a slow start, probably due to the fact that we had to leave Mildura at 4.45am to arrive on time, the girls realised that the game had begun and settled in to play some impressive hockey. The teamwork was evident in the 10 -0 score line as seven of the girls scored one or more goals. Goal scorers for the day were Jade, Ruby, Catherine, Jessica Penna - 1 each, 2 goals to Courtney and Samantha came through with an impressive 3 goals.

The girls will now travel to Melbourne in August for the State final. For four of the players, Jade, Ruby, Kimmy and Hanna this will be their 6th attempt at taking out the title. Well done girls and good luck in Melbourne.

Phoning for an AmbulanceStudent well being is our first concern and if required we will call an ambulance. Parents will then be notified when an ambulance has been called for their child.

The cost is charged directly to the student by Ambulance Victoria and can be very costly.

It is advised that all families acquire appropriate ambulance insurance
