FROM THE VACANCY PASTOR DENNIS DREWS

By the time you read this, I will have been in your midst as Vacancy Pastor since

September 5th. It has not been enough time to learn most of your names yet, but

interaction with many of you has made it possible to know some of you now by name.

Give me time; I’m working at it!

I have chosen to be present in the building on at least three days a week, and more

times when called upon. My office hours are on Tuesday morning, Wednesday after-

noon, and Sunday morning. I am enjoying the opportunity to serve at St. Peter. You

are a friendly group of people who have welcomed me warmly. Thanks! Hopefully

God will answer prayers for another servant to join with this actively involved group

in a timely fashion!

Allow me to share with you a portion of an article that I found interesting and

helpful.

A person who recently returned from a mission trip to Central America

was telling stories of the trip over lunch. She commented that the culture

of the congregations visited in Central America provided an opportunity

for celebration in the middle of each worship service. Each member

brought their offering forward, and presented it for use in the mission of the

congregation. These offerings were sometimes monetary offerings, but some

in the congregation offered fruit grown in their garden, or chickens that were

raised on their farms, and other household items that could be auctioned off

to other members of the congregation after worship. The crucial components

of the offerings were that each item was given joyfully and without hesitation.

The American visitors commented that they could literally feel the joy that

was a part of each gift to the congregation.

Think about the moment when our congregation receives the offering.

What's the mood at that instant when the offering plate passes in front of

you? Many people say that giving their offering is a moment of joy. These

moments of joy point to an important set of intangible indicators of health

in a congregation.

At the moment the offering is received, what facial expressions and

body languages are we seeing? What do those moments communicate about

our congregation's sense of faith? What messages are members sending out

and receiving about hope? We cannot see the heart but we are able to react

to what we do see. Does St. Peter "receive an offering" or do we "take a

collection?" What might those two terms communicate about our congregation?

What is the spirit of the congregation when we greet one another before,

during or after worship? Or, what is the congregation's reaction to change?

Or what amount of laughter is there in the narthex before and after worship?

Do meetings start and end as scheduled? At virtually every moment in a

congregation's life, there is some intangible indicator of spiritual health.

A good intangible indicator is whether or not someone leaves church

feeling like they experienced God during worship, or whether they felt

inspired to get involved with a particular ministry in the congregation. A

holistic, whole-life approach to congregational spiritual health includes

evaluating every component of a congregation's activities.

WATCH FOR IT! Impact & Growth Sunday! Coming to St. Peter Lutheran Church on January 28, 2018.

Dear Pastor Drews,

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

As we all wait for Christmas when God's love for us has been revealed through Jesus's birth, we all thirst for

His presence in our daily life, in the way how we celebrate His birthday. May God help us to make our Christmas truly

blessed, truly intimate and gentle, joyous and peaceful!

We are so very grateful for your continuing support given to our congregation earlier this year. God bless your

donations and God bless your heart as well. Your donations were used to help grow God's Kingdom here in Szeged at

Szeged Lutheran Church, especially to support outreach ministry, help the poverty stricken and needy, to those who

are unchurched or lost contact with church during the Communist regime. We also do ministry at the university

campus; our pastor regularly talks about hot topics of life to them from a Christian point of view.

We started to organize church concerts on a monthly basis and they are becoming very popular; attendance is growing.

Again, we wish to thank you for your monetary assistance in helping to fix our old church organ.

May your Christmas season be mightily blessed with joy, peace and love and may these gifts from above be

fully yours throughout 2018 as well!

In His name, with love and gratitude, and in the name of our pastor and church members as well,

Dr. Peter Szerdahelyi

Szeged Lutheran Church, Hungary

Our Mission of the Month for January and February is Direct Relief International, Puerto Rico.

In 1945, William Zimdin, a wealthy Estonian immigrant, began sending thousands of care packages of food, clothes, and medicine to relatives, friends, and former employees to help them rebuild their lives after World War II. He established the William Zimdin Foundation, and when he died in 1951, Dezso (Dennis) Karczag, a Hungarian immigrant and close business associate, took over management of this non-profit foundation. In 1957, it changed its name to the Direct Relief Foundation, and in 1982 became known as Direct Relief International.

Direct Relief is now a humanitarian and medical relief organization, active in all 50 states in the USA and more than 80 other countries. Its mission is to improve the health and lives of people affected by poverty or emergencies by mobilizing and providing essential medical resources needed for their care. Direct Relief provides assistance to people and communities without regard to politics, religion, or ability to pay. Direct Relief's assistance programs focus on emergency preparedness and disaster response, along with the prevention and treatment of disease for the most vulnerable people of the world.

In September, 2017, Hurricane Maria made a devastating path through the Caribbean and Puerto Rico. Directly after the hurricane hit, power outages left millions of residents in the dark. The lack of power also meant that many hospitals were running on generators, and fuel for them was limited. Cell phone reception was extremely limited, with about 95 percent of wireless cell sites out of service. Damaged ports, roads, and airports also slowed the arrival of emergency aid. Despite these circumstances, Direct Relief responded quickly to those in need in Puerto Rico, focusing relief efforts on the health care facilities that served the people affected. Even as communication remained limited, the first shipment of medical supplies left Direct Relief’s warehouse for the island, where the need for these medicines was high. Their shipment arrived in Puerto Rico, packed with wound care supplies, antibiotics, and insulin. Emergency health kits were also sent along with hygiene kits and medical backpacks, which equipped first responders to carry medical supplies to remote areas where they were needed.

Direct Relief is a non-profit organization and does not rely on any funding from government grants. Its funds come from the private sector. On November 20

th, 2017, Direct Relief announced a commitment

of up to $5 million in cash grants to health centers and clinics in Puerto Rico, to continue to address ongoing health needs following the hurricane. 100% of these donations will be used exclusively for this relief effort.

Please prayerfully consider contributing to Direct Relief Puerto Rico during January and February. You may use the special Mission envelopes that are in your offering envelope box, in the pews, or on the Mission Board in the narthex.
