“I never liked saying good-bye; I’ve had to say enough ‘good-byes’ in my life.” That is what my grandmother told me when

I asked her why she always just hung up the phone without ever saying “so long” or “bye” or “see you later.” I was a teenager and did not really understand how many good-byes one can say in a lifetime. Saying good-bye can be easy. If you are ready for someone or something to go; to bid them farewell takes little effort. But when someone or something you have loved and cherished, or simply needed or got used to goes, especially suddenly, it can be gut wrenching to bid them farewell. That is one of the reasons that grief groups are so important. They help us process the loss and help us to eventually accept what seems totally unacceptable. Looking Back, Moving Forward, Growing Deeper was our Stewardship Theme this year. It seems to encompass how we live our lives as well. We look back and remember, we make decisions that move us in a

direction we want to go, and then when we pay attention to it all, we gain a deeper understanding of ourselves, others and God. We grow deeper as we let go. We let go of our preconceived notions, our prejudices, our “shoulds and oughts.” Spiritual maturity is not about gaining but about letting go. It is not so much about addition as it is subtraction. Spiritual practices, for instance, have to do with letting go: fasting – letting go of food; alms giving – letting go of money; meditation – letting go of thoughts, etc. To grow deeper as an individual and as a congregation means letting go. It can be scary. It can make us sad. Saying good-bye to the predictable and the familiar can be both. It causes us to grieve. God is calling us into the future. And the only sure thing is that God is there already. Everything else is uncertain. But we are not saved by certainty. We are saved by faith. Eph. 1:16 “I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers.”

God’s peace, Pr. Bob Albing

LCM Stewardship Corner

Mark Wilson

As a Lutheran, I find the subject of Stewardship thrilling because it truly is about a daily adventure of experiencing God’s Heart through Faith. None of us have been able to take God out for pizza. How-ever all of us have experienced God though we can’t see Him...or physically touch Him ...or hear audible sounds from Him, see Him perform jaw dropping events that boggle our mind. Imagine liv-ing that everyday. He wants us to.

God began this covenant faith relationship, by making it clear to Israel that He alone is God. He says “I am God, and there shall be no other Gods before Me.” (Cecil B. DeMille showed us the reality of that truth). This statement from God through Moses happens to be our rule number one from Him. Let me encourage you to memorize the slogan “God is God, and I am not...He can, but I can’t....He will and I won’t...thank God for God.” That has gotten me out of more mental jams that I can count.

God further helped Israel to understand that He alone owns them. They belong to Him. He has made it very clear that He chose them to be His own (later we find that we’ve been included in that choice). He teaches us that we are His. He created us out of His very image. He created the world according to His design. He’s in control of all things. He’s assigned personality characteristics to each individual. David says it this way, I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

This foundational reality got sidetracked when Israel decided under Samuel's watch that they wanted, deserved and demanded a King too rule over them. Enter stage right...King Saul. After much mental torment from Samuel, God allowed it.....but it would cost them dearly.

Here’s the spiritual shift for Israel then, and for us today. God made it clear that He would allow it but

it would cost them 10 percent of everything in their life. 10 percent of their crops, finances, their chil-dren, livestock, everything they owned would be taxed. They agreed....and the 10 percent rule still incorrectly lives in the church to this day.

It cost us greatly by blocking us from living our life by this marvelous gift of God called Faith. God wants these obstacles in our lives removed and replaced with a new life of trusting Him for everything. After all He is an everything kind of God.

In contrast the New Testament teaches us that Gods Heart is to live by Faith according to His promise or Covenant that He created long ago, and that this Faith Covenant happens to be God’s invitation to a “relationship promise walk” in Jesus Christ, lead by the Holy Spirit, exercised by Faith in His abilities.....not ours. Whew!!

Let’s look at our Baptism. We bring our children before the church...committing them totally to God. We are taught that by faith, He gives them this wonderful gift of Salvation. We then promise to raise them by Faith accordingly.

We commit to Him that at the appropriate time, we will teach, encourage and lead them to open this wonderful gift of salvation that has been freely given to them through their Baptism, at their Confirmation.

We buy into this TOTAL COVENANT teaching as members of the faith. The manifestation of this Christ Centered Covenant is our Baptism.

The true concept of stewardship, is truly a commitment to a life of Faith. And truly, there His nothing more exciting, personally stretching, internally difficult, and worth celebrating like seeing and experiencing God doing His wonderful work.

This note isn’t designed to motivate you to be a faithful 10 percent giver. It’s designed to Inspire you to be a Holy Spirit Faith Lifer.

Message from the Director of Youth & Family Ministry Beckie Jenicek | (208) 755-0995 | [email protected]

What is my Gift? For the last 45 years, I have been involved in some form of youth

Ministry. We could go back further if you want to count that I was President of “Luther League” for my Sophomore, Junior, and Senior League. When I hit the U of I, I volunteered with the youth at the Lutheran Church in Moscow, attended Campus Crusade for Christ, and was a leader for the campus Young Life group. After graduation from University, I continued to volunteer with the youth at whatever church I was attending and still volunteered with various high schools with Young Life. When I moved to Canada, I immediately found a Lutheran Church and started volunteering with their youth group. I moved back to Spokane when my daughter was 6 and volunteered with Redeemer Lutheran Church in Spokane Valley. I married and moved to Kellogg and took about a 4-year break from volunteering as much with the Church because my husband was ill and I had two teenagers in the house. My husband passed away the same year my daughter graduated from High School. I was working jobs I didn’t like and missing being able to be involved with youth at the church. I was out at Lutherhaven one day praying about my life and made the decision to sell my house, get myself into debt, go back to school and make Youth Ministry a full-time commitment. I sold the house and moved to the Portland, OR area and attended Concordia Lutheran University. I received my Director of Christian Education in 2007 in the LCMS Lutheran Church. DCE in the LCMS church is a called and Rostered position and my first call was to St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Washougal, Wa. I spent

eight happy years there until the congregation could no longer afford my position. My second call was to Messiah Lutheran Church in Holt, MI. I packed up and moved 2300 miles across the country to serve the youth and family there for only a year until circumstances moved me back to the NW. I returned to the church I grew up in, Our Savior Lutheran, in Pinehurst, ID and volunteered with their youth and families. Two years ago, I received a phone call from my cousin Jeri DeLange that LCM had an opening for a part-time position as Director of Youth and Family. I applied and you graciously have allowed me to work with your youth and families for the last two years.

Working in Youth and Family ministry is my gift. It is what I do. It is always what I have done. It is who I am. I am thankful that God has given me this gift and entrusted me with the responsibility of teaching people of all ages how to grow in their faith.

I’m a Lutheran: Hank & Lois Wenig by Dave Jacobson

Hank and Lois met in Ohio when he was 23 and she was 17. She was a high school girl going into her senior year staying with her cousin and working as a waitress to earn money for her high school ring, senior pictures, and a yearbook.

Hank was an Army soldier on leave from the occupation forces in Germany with only a couple more days of leave. Hank was seated at the U-shaped restaurant counter, waited on by another waitress, but he forgot his Army hat on a counter seat. He came back for his hat and it was that time that Lois was leaving her shift. He held the door for her exit and invited her to a Betty Grable movie showing at the theater close by. Her thought was “I don’t even know this guy”. Twice he said his name with a run together phrase “wardwenig” and she still couldn’t understand what his name was.

She was a bit hesitant about going out with a guy she didn’t know let alone she couldn’t understand what his name was. Seeking council from her cousin about whether to take in a movie. She decided yes to the invite he offered but with some caution. She said sweetly that Hank, or should I say Ward, was easy to talk to. In the next couple of days Lois and Hank went together to her cousin’s wedding and to supper at his grandmother’s house. Hank was released from the Army December 7, 1952. During their time apart they both wrote daily letters to each other.

They both must have passed the test with each other and the families as they were married in a small wedding January 1953 at St John Lutheran Church in Williston, OH, her home church. This was the church where she was baptized and confirmed as well as the baptismal place for their 6 children. In January of this year they celebrated 66 years of marriage.

Hank, or Ward as his family knew him, had 2 brothers and one sister. Lois had two brothers. Hank’s dad was a Baptist and his mom a Methodist. Like inferred above, Lois was a born and bred Lutheran. Hank’s great uncle was a missionary who started churches in Rathdrum ID and Newport WA along with other northwest locations.

This couple is not a sit-down and slacker unit! The first year of marriage Hank had a door to door egg route in Toledo, OH. The year Lois got her first driver’s license in November 1958 and by April she had her own egg route with 3 children to care for. Hanks profession in Ohio was a short haul truck driver for Mohawk Motors Trucking. After he had 20 years in (1972), they moved to Sagle ID after several Idaho exploratory trips. They found a church home quickly when they relocated, First Lutheran in Sandpoint where Kathy Gemar’s father was a pastor. Lois was a housewife and full-time mother, while Hank spent 6 months building a drive-in restaurant in Sandpoint.

Hank found employment in 1974 with Garrett Truck Line in Spokane and the family lived in Post Falls where they were members of Calvary church. At other times they lived in Bonners Ferry, Moyie Springs, and Hayden. Whatever job Hank had, he also peddled eggs on the side to restaurants. Driving around the area there is a truck with Wenig Foods painted on the side, a business their son took over from Hank and Lois in 1983.

In the last couple of weeks as a part of his sermon, Pastor Bob asked the people present to share about their faith mentor/mentors. Lois indicated her Aunt Annie was that guide and supporter. The couple read and discuss the scripture readings when they can’t make it to service. Lois indicated Psalm 46 is one of her favorite scriptures, renewing her strength and feeding her. Lois is one of the readers at second service, her voice strong and confident.

Lois indicated Hank’s hobby was work – his day job and his sideline efforts. Her hobbies were landscape gardening, furniture refinishing, watercolor painting, and reading. She enjoys James Herriott stories, mysteries, and British humor.

In their church past Hank was an usher in Ohio, an elected four-year commitment, while Lois wrestled with their first four children in the pew. Son John indicated Lois had “the look” that could guide a restless child. In their church memberships Lois has involved herself in Bible Studies, baking communion bread, circles, and whatever else came up as a need.

Be sure to greet these faithful members, they have a deep faith they have held close for years.
