NASHA MUKTI YUVA SANKALP

(ek nasha….nasha k khilaaf)

Nasha Mukti Yuva Sankalp-NMYS is a group of like minded young professionals as well as

students from different professions like social work, media, business, medical, law and so

on. It is a platform where people against addictions get assembled to think, speak and act

against all kinds of harmful addictives and work for a peaceful and healthy society. And we

have strong belief that “Iradey Neek Hoon to Rastey Nikal Aatey Hain” We believe that

every youth must perform his/her prime work either in form of study or engagement with

any profession as well as he/she has to work for the fulfillment towards the family or social

expectations.

Apart from it, he/she must get leisure period. And every youth is full of some capacity,

talent, skill or expertise. Thus, NMYS is trying to turn the energy of the youth into synergy

by collective efforts for a greater cause of self introspection as well as human happiness.

Here the Sankalpi members donate their leisure time, expertise, skill, knowledge and other

possible resources for a true happy life. Thus NMYS is the manifestation of our passion not

profession. We have been using public place like park for open discussion and planning. Its

main objective is to make a society free from deadly addictives. We are self motivated

people with the spirit of strong volunteerism.

NMYS was mainly initiated to make a

tobacco free society. As we know that

tobacco causes more deaths in India than

HIV/Alcohol and accidents put together.

Almost all 50% cancers in India are due to

tobacco consumption alone. The total

numbers of premature deaths caused by

tobacco during 20th century has been

estimated at about 100 million and, if

current trends of tobacco use continue

during the twenty-first century, the death

toll is projected to go up to one billion. The World Health Organization (WHO), which

provides these estimates, also predicts that India will have the fastest rate of rise in deaths

attributable to tobacco in the first two decades of the twenty first century.

However, both the State and civil society seem to be very indifferent to this issue as if it is

no more a social concern at all. Apart from it, Media (fourth pillar of Indian Democracy) is

also propagating for wide spread of tobacco and other deadly addictives through ads. When

all the important pillars are favoring to mar the important population (children/youth) of

the Nation by popularizing alchohol shops/ tobacco stalls, at the same time students and

professionals and other young people from different groups are coming together to be an

obstacle against the wide spread use of the deadly addictives under the banner of NMYS

with complete dedication and volunteerism.

Our Goal

• Making a Peaceful, Healthy Society without Harmful Addictives.

Our Soul Objectives

• Reaching out to the activists and get assembled together to fight against harmful

addictions.

• Creating Children Activist to create tobacco free campus as well as their home

surrounding.

• Alleviating and Condemning Sources of Addiction

• Creating a Vibrant Youth leadership.

What We Do!

• School Leadership Programmes Against Tobacco

NMYS is organizing anti tobacco Awareness cum programmes in schools in order to reach

out to the mass through children. We not only sensitize the children regarding the evil

impact of tobacco but also try to train them in the same line so that they can be an

ambassador of change. We have done such programme in some schools in Bhubaneswar,

Puri, Bhadrak also slum based activities in the slums of Bhubaneswar. Apart from it, we are

also conducting such programmes in the camps of NSS and Scout.

Tobacco Rakshas Programme

Our Sankalpi Friend Jagdish Pal Babu is an innovative Artist of Mayurbhanj who has been

performing “Tobacco Rakshas Programme” in open public places as well as in different

youth camps to attract the public attention and sensitize them against the harmful impact

of deadly tobacco. He is also taking part in different youth camps of NSS in Mayurbhanj to

sensitize the young people with his brilliant artistic performances.

• Anti-tobacco Publications and Media Advocacy

We are also trying to mobilize the attention of the people through our publications. Several

articles are developed and sent to media for public reference. “Bloody Gutkha” a Booklet is

also written by our Sankalpi MD Imran Ali and published by OVHA for free distribution.

This time we are going to publish the booklet in Odia and we are thankful to Prof. Jantrana

Parikshit because he took pain for linguistic correction of the literature. Apart from it, we

are also trying to involve mass media to highlight the issues as well as our campaign to

generate public support. Our Media personals and students like Sankalpi Anuj Kumar Das,

Sankalpi Manas Kumar Behera and Sankalpi Abinash Thakur respectively are coordinating

media for wide spread of the campaign. We are also writing theme based articles in local

print media.

• Using RTI Act, 2005 as a tool against tobacco

RTI Act 2005 is used as a tool against tobacco and other harmful addictives. With the use of

RTI Act, we could know that the sale of tobacco and tobacco products in Omfed booths is

not permitted by Omfed. However, it is also observed that even the minors are being

involved in tobacco business in these stalls. Thus, NMYS called for press consultation and

raised the issue. As a result of which the officials are sensitized to certain extent.

• E-Campaign

We are sending SMSs by our Cell phones to generate awareness on health, peace and

harmony for instance, prior to the verdict on Babri Masjid and Ram Mandir, we sent SMS

like “Unsey to Achcha Hai Mere Ghar ka Kabootar Kavi Baitha Masjid Par Kavi Mandir

Par…NMYS appeals for Peace”. We are also updating such different information in social

networking groups. We are mailing different pictorial warnings for sensitization.

• Youth Exposure Programme

We are also participating in National,

State and local level youth conventions

for exposures. Recently we have

participated in youth workshops in

Bhubaneswar, Puri, Shilong, Madhay

Pradesh and Kolkata. Such workshops

help us to capacitate us both in

knowledge and skill levels.

• Cultural Team For Campaign

We have a very good team for cultural

performance to catch the public

attention to spread our messages.

Sankalpi Bikram Keshori Nayak has

developed different songs and slogans

on the theme. We are performing street

theatre along with songs and slogans on

social themes.

• Yoga For Behavioral Change

Studies in many countries have shown

that although an overwhelming

majority of tobacco users want to quit,

less than half succeed in stopping

permanently before the age of sixty

because tobacco delivered nicotine is

so powerfully addictive. But in this

connection, Yoga and naturopathy can

be very meaningful to help the tobacco

users to quit permanently. Thus, the

participation of Yoga Gurumaa

Sankalpi Karma Jyoti has empowered

the campaign. She has been teaching about different “Asana” to quit addictions in her Yoga

camps. She also includes life skill education in the school programmes.

We Celebrate…

The Sankalpi Friends celebrate different

National/International occasions in their

respective areas with an objective to

spread the messages of health and peace

and also try to mobilize and involve the

young people for a better society.

However, in the state level the following

celebrations have been observed with a

sizable youth mass in Bhubaneswar:

a. Republic Day- Salia Sahi Basti of Bhubaneswar.

b. World No tobacco Day- Youth Convocation at CYSD, Bhubaneswar.

c. World Peace Day- Street Play followed by peace songs and slogans at the open place of

Master canteen (Railway Station) and Raj Mahal of Bhubaneswar.

d. Gandhi Jayanti- Celebrated in Mahatma Gandhi Park of Bhubaneswar.

e. Shishu Diwas- Children fun activity cum talent search activity organized among the

children of Munda Sahi basti of Bhubaneswar

• Individual Counseling

We are organizing trainings for our core group members to update ourselves related to the

issues of addictions. It helps us to go for counseling in our individual level. Individual level

counseling motivated different people to give up tobacco.

• Capacity Building Training g Programmes

We are thankful to Dr. Bhagabanprakash, Convener Odisha Nagarika Samaj because of his

intellectual discussion with us on the issues of modern youth and social development.

Similarly, we feel privileged by the training of Madhu Bhai State Convener, NYP on “The

Role of Youth to Volunteer for Campaign” in the State office of NYP. Similarly, we are

thankful to Ms. Itishree Kanungo of VHAI to give us training on COTPA, 2003 in the campus

of VHAI. Our Sankalpi Subrat Dash has attended “ENGO Training programme on

Website Creation and Management” organized by DISHA, Bhadrak.

• Preparation for Mass Movement for Complete ban on tobacco, liquor etc.

NMYS is trying to link up with different

individuals, groups, organizations,

activists, Women, Youth and Children to

prepare for mass movement to ban

tobacco, alcohol and other deadly

addictives completely. We do believe

that no poison will be sold to human

being at all. For greater sensitization as

well as awareness, different innovative

activities will be undertaken in different

parts by our Sankalpi friends. Any one

with the same spirit and volunteerism can be a Sankalpi friend to join the movement and

start working in his/her own surrounding. We believe that “Jann Aandolan Ki Shurwat

Mann Aandolan Se Hoti Hai” Means people’s movement starts with movement in one’s own

heart.

How do we work?

In order to work systematically we have a Core Team consisting of different responsible

teams for Coordination, Finance, Training, Media, Documentation and Cultural

performances. We do not have any designated personals rather responsible Sankalpi

members. We do not have any hierarchy or rigid structure. Any one can be a member of

NMYS and share his/her volunteerism, talent and other resource for his/her eternal

satisfaction and a great cause of human happiness.

Our Sankalpi Fiends

Bikram, Jitendra, Abinash, Manaswini, Anuj, Subrat, Jagdish, Imran, Lisa, Manas, Baby,

Karmajyoti, Smruti, Tapasudha, Debahari, Suryakanta, Baby, Ajit, Srimanta, Abdul, Dev,

Rajshree, Soumya, Joytiram.

Guiding Stars

We can not forget to acknowledge

some likeminded eminent people

without whom the journey would be

very difficult. NMYS has been

contributed many forms by Mr.

Lokanath Mohanty (M.Tech-IIT)

from its inception. His support and

inspirations have been meaningfully

contributed to the campaign.

Similarly, the contribution of Mr.

Gobinda Ballava Dalai (MSW-TISS)

can not be ignored. He walks with us

contributes to strengthen youth leadership in the state. All the Sankalpi friends are morally

spirited with the influence of state famous Young Activist Mr. Madhusudhan Das (Madhu

Bhai). He has been with us to stimulate the Sankalpi friends. The association with Ziauddin

Hindustani (Peace Activist of Kandhamal) has encouraged us. Similarly, we are grateful to

Young Activist Som bhai Young RTI Activist Ms. Sujata Mohapatra for their moral and

physical support. We are fortunate enough to be guided by Dr. S.N. Senapati, Head

Department of Radiation Oncology, A.H. Regional Cancer Centre, Cuttack. Similarly, the

guidance/support of Mr. Biren Tripathy, Advocate Odisha High Court and Ms. Sarita Patel,

Youth Officer, NSS has no doubt empowered the campaign.

May You Share?

All the above activities are carried with the possible resources with us; we are sharing Rs. 1

per day to take the campaign ahead. Some likeminded people have also been facilitating the

campaign from their individual and organizational level. All of us are not only sharing

money but also sharing talent and other resources towards fulfilling the target. Sankalpi

Tapasudha has developed the logo of NMYS. Similarly, Sankalpi Lisa prepares the minutes

and banners to be used in the programmes. Anyone can be a part of the campaign and lead

towards achievement of the objectives. For any financial sharing, you may contact our
