This was the first time since 2011 that this event had been held, and the previous winner was Zeph Gabrield-McLean. Our three entrants, Paris Blessington (Yr11), Alicia Bate (Yr11) and Keely Clark (Yr12), were outstanding. The judges commented how difficult it was to separate the girls, with a different student basically ahead of the others in each of the three sections of the contest. These being an interview, a prepared speech and an impromptu speech. Eventually, the final decision was almost a photo finish, with Alicia Bate being announced as the overall winner. Alicia will now progress to the Regional finals. I must congratulate all the girls as they were wonderful ambassadors for our school and the community. He skied exceptionally well and was placed 3 rd in the slalom events. This is an outstanding effort and is the result of his dedication and commitment to his training and the support of those around him. We wish him all the best in his future events. Bikes at School It is great to see the number of students riding bikes to school on the increase. We do have a secure area for students to leave their bikes. They can obtain a key for the area from Mr Kenna by completing a note and providing a $20 fully refundable deposit. It is also important that students riding to school obey all the traffic rules and they must wear a helmet to avoid possible fines from the police. The law states that wearing a helmet is compulsory and this is an important safety measure. Narooma Bridge One concern I have is that recently a number of students have been observed jumping from the Narooma Bridge into the water below. This is an extremely dangerous practice, and in the past has resulted in the death of a student, Daniel Bobeldyk in 2007. I would encourage parents to urge their children not to be involved in this dangerous activity. Thank You This week I will be representing the school at a Secondary Principal’s Council meeting in Jindabyne on Thursday and Friday and would like to thank Mr John Melville for stepping up and acting as relieving Principal in my absence. Have a great week.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

This week has been another very busy week.

Year 7 Camp Our year 7 students were super excited to be heading off to Bournda Environmental Education Centre for their camp.

I know that they will be involved in a wide range of activities from bush walking through to kayaking and surf boat rowing on

Wallagoot Lake.

All reports indicate they are having a great time and special thanks goes to the teachers who have accompanied them, Mr

Johathon Hull, Mr Matt Hayes, Mrs Kate Klose and Mrs Sonia Reid, their Year Advisor.

Lions Club Youth of the Year On Tuesday the 16 February, three of our students took part in the Narooma Lions Club Youth of the Year. This was the first

time since 2011 that this event had been held, and the previous winner was Zeph Gabrield-McLean.

Our three entrants, Paris Blessington (Yr11), Alicia Bate (Yr11) and Keely Clark (Yr12), were outstanding. The judges

commented how difficult it was to separate the girls, with a different student basically ahead of the others in each of the three

sections of the contest. These being an interview, a prepared speech and an impromptu speech.

Eventually, the final decision was almost a photo finish, with Alicia Bate being announced as the overall winner. Alicia will

now progress to the Regional finals.

I must congratulate all the girls as they were wonderful ambassadors for our school and the community.

Zone Swimming We have a number of swimmers competing in the Zone Championships at the Narooma Aquatic Centre today, Wednesday, and

we wish them the best of luck as they attempt to qualify for Regional and hopefully CHS State Championships later this term.

Water Ski Champion Congratulations to Matthew Swadling, who represented Australia in a water ski tournament in New Zealand recently. He skied

exceptionally well and was placed 3rd

in the slalom events. This is an outstanding effort and is the result of his dedication and

commitment to his training and the support of those around him.

We wish him all the best in his future events.

Bikes at School It is great to see the number of students riding bikes to school on the increase. We do have a secure area for students to leave

their bikes. They can obtain a key for the area from Mr Kenna by completing a note and providing a $20 fully refundable

deposit.

It is also important that students riding to school obey all the traffic rules and they must wear a helmet to avoid possible fines

from the police. The law states that wearing a helmet is compulsory and this is an important safety measure.

Narooma Bridge

One concern I have is that recently a number of students have been observed jumping from the Narooma Bridge into the water

below. This is an extremely dangerous practice, and in the past has resulted in the death of a student, Daniel Bobeldyk in 2007.

I would encourage parents to urge their children not to be involved in this dangerous activity.

Thank You This week I will be representing the school at a Secondary Principal’s Council meeting in Jindabyne on Thursday and Friday

and would like to thank Mr John Melville for stepping up and acting as relieving Principal in my absence.

Have a great week.

UPCOMING EVENTS ~ Thursday 10 March ~ School Photos

MultiLit Volunteers Needed.

A call out to anyone interested in making a difference in the lives of young people by helping improve their Literacy

skills through reading and comprehension at Narooma High School.

Training will be provided on Thursday 11 February 2016.

Please contact Jonathan Hull @ Narooma HS.

Phone: 02 4476 4377

Note - volunteers will be required to have a current Working with Children Check.

HOMEWORK CENTRE

The school will again run a homework centre in the afternoons of a Tuesday and a Thursday from 3.30 – 4.30pm.

Students can attend and will be supplied with some afternoon tea and will be able to access the library facilities to help

them with their homework and assignments.

Teachers who help out on these days are volunteers and give their time freely to support our students.

UNIFORM SHOP HOURS Stitches will be open at Narooma High School every Tuesday from 10.45am to 1.45.

ATTENDANCE Attendance at school is an important aspect of enduring a student’s ongoing success and growth as part of their

education. The Department of Education encourages students to attend school each and every day. It does recognise

that there are occasional times where a student may not be able to attend school, due to illness or other medical reasons.

In some cases parents may apply for extended leave if their child will be absent for more than a week, for example an

overseas family holiday.

I remain parents that school starts at 8.55am and that all students are expected to attend Roll Call at the start of the day.

This is important as students receive notification of the important changes to the day and of upcoming events.

Students who arrive late to school will be required to have an acceptable explanation for their lateness. No explanations

or unacceptable reason such as sleeping in will be marked as unjustified absences.

Students who need to leave school during the day must provide a note to the Deputy Principal, Mr Melville before

school, with an acceptable explanation for leaving during school, and sign out at the front office before leaving.

HEAD LICE As our school year commences, we have been made aware of the few cases of head lice. Here are a few helpful tip:

Regularly check your children’s hair

Teach older children to check their own hair

Tie back and braid long hear

Keep a fine tooth head lice comb in the bathroom and encourage all family members to use it when they

wash their hair.

Daily combing of white hair conditioner using a fine tooth comb is effective in getting rid of head lice

and eggs.

NAROOMA HIGH SCHOOL SHOW TEAM SUCCESS On Saturday 6

th February the Narooma High School Show Team competed at the Nimmitabel Show. After a very

early start the team of 10 students and 7 cows began preparation for the day. The senior girls were amazing role

models encouraging the juniors who were attending their very first show. Tailem, Sarah, Alicia and Lucy shared their talents and taught the juniors how to prepare the sheds, how to wash, dry and groom the cattle and what to expect

from the day.

Narooma High School came out with some fantastic overall results.

NSW SCHOOL VACCINATION PROGRAM Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical

Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.

In 2016 the following vaccines will be offered to Year 7 students*:

dTpa vaccine (Diphtheria, Tetanus & Pertussis (whooping cough)) as a single dose

varicella vaccine (chickenpox) as a single dose; and

human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in a 3-dose schedule at 0, 2 and 6 months (students who commence HPV vaccination in

Year 7 but do not complete the course may be offered catch-up doses at school in Year 8)

* The Parent Information Kits contain a consent form, information sheet and privacy statement that details how personal

information will be collected, stored and utilised.

Parent Information Kits will be sent home to parents/guardians. To consent to the vaccination of their child, parents/guardians are

advised to:

read all the information provided

complete the consent form, including signing their name next to the vaccine/s they would like their child to receive

return the completed consent form to their child’s school

ensure that their child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccination clinic.

Parents/guardians who wish to withdraw their consent for any reason may do so by writing to the school Principal or phoning the

school. The Procedure for Withdrawal of Consent is available on the NSW Health website at

www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation.

To improve vaccination completion, students will be opportunistically offered any missed doses throughout the year where

possible.

A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic. Parents/guardians should ensure that this record is kept for future reference and should not assume that their child has been vaccinated if they do not receive this Record of

Vaccination.
