The Hate U Give

Directions: After reading The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, complete ONE of the following assignments. The assignment will be collected by your English teacher in September. It will be the first grade you receive for the new school year. It is mandatory that the assignment be typed.

1. Character Analysis: The way a person behaves with friends is probably different than the way one behaves with family. Expectations may be different and that may influence a person’s behavior. Starr’s character is exposed to two worlds, and she feels she has to behave differently in both places. Write a five paragraph character analysis describing the character traits she reveals in each of her two worlds- school and home (or her neighborhood). Use evidence directly quoted from the book to support those traits. Additionally, write a paragraph in which you explain who you think is the real Starr. Is she a combination of both personas?

2. Theme- Discuss a significant theme in the novel and explain how it is developed. Write a response of at least five paragraphs. Use evidence directly quoted from the book to support your ideas.

3. Literary Analysis- Literature often reflects the society in which it is written. How does the author use setting to shape her novel? How does setting help create mood, conflict, and character development? Write a response of at least five paragraphs. Use evidence directly quoted from the book to support your ideas.

4. Compare/Contrast Movie Adaptation- After reading the novel, view the recent film adaptation. Discuss in detail how the film captures two key scenes that support an element of writing from the novel such as theme, conflict, setting, or characterization. Be very specific with detail to demonstrate the comparison to the novel. Use language from the novel, direct quotes, to show how the film successfully depicts the scenes or fails to portray what the author intended. You may write an additional paragraph suggesting what would have improved the scenes that fall short of your expectations. Your response should be at least 5 paragraphs with evidence directly quoted from the book.

Reminder: Citation- All evidence (direct quotes) should be properly cited. For example you may write-

This conflict is illustrated when “Starr slammed the door and stormed off” (Thomas 4).
