Nara Period (710-794) •  Nara  period  in  Japanese  history  was  a  period  in  which  the  imperial  government  was  located  in  Nara,  Japan.  

•  There  is  sAll  a  city  named  Nara  in  Japan  today.  

•  Buddhism  was  most  highly  developed  in  Nara.  

•  Nara  arAsans  made  refined  Buddhist  sculptures  and  erected  grand  Buddhist  temples.      

Nara economy •  The  economy  began  to  grow  due  to  the  roads  that  were  built.  This  was  great  for  trading  and  transportaAon!  

Nara Government •  UnAl  the  eighth  century,  the  capital  usually  moved  each  Ame  an  emperor  died.    

•  Then,  in  710,  a  new  capital,  intended  to  be  permanent,  was  established  at  Nara.    

•  But  then,  it  moved  again—some  say  to  escape  the  meddling  in  poliAcs  of  powerful  Buddhist  temples.

People,  Land,  and  Taxes  

•  Taxes  were  a  heavy  burden  on  peasants  •  In  the  Nara  period,  most  peasants  could  not  purchase  their  own  land  

•  The  problem  for  the  government,  imperial  family,  nobles,  and  temples  was  to  find  labor  to  work  their  extensive  landholdings.

Nara •  The  life  of  the  common  people  of  Japan  remained  harsh  during  the  Nara  and  Heian  periods.    

•  EsAmates  of  the  early  Nara  populaAon  suggest  slightly  more  than  5  million  people  

•  By  the  end  of  the  Heian  period  the  number  had  increased  to  only  about  6  million.    

Education in Nara

•  From  the  Nara  period  unAl  the  nineteenth  century,  most  philosophical  and  legal  wriAngs  as  well  as  most  of  the  histories,  essays,  and  religious  texts  in  Japan  were  wriLen  in  Chinese.

Heian Period 794-1185 •  Last  division  of  classical  Japanese  history!    

•  There  used  to  be  a  city  named  Heian  (now  Kyoto)  when  the  emperor  moved  there.  

•  Buddhism  was  at  its  height!    

•  The  nobles  who  followed  Japan’s  emperor  to  Heian  (now  called  Kyoto)  wanted  to  win  his  favor  by  living  close  to  him.    In  Heian,  these  nobles  created  an  imperial  court.           A  group  of  nobles  who  

live  near  and  serve  or  advise  a  ruler  

Why  was  it  important  for  nobles  to  have  the  favor  of  the  emperor?      

Heian- Golden Age •  Fashion-­‐  a  love  for  elaborate  oueits  

•  Literature-­‐  wriAng  was  very  popular.  Poetry  was  also  popular.  Men  wrote  in  Chinese  and  Women  wrote  in  Japanese.

•  You  and  your  partner  will  complete  a  silent  debate.    

•  One  of  you  will  be  assigned  the  Nara  Period  and  the  other  will  be  the  Heian  Period.  You  and  your  partner  will  silently  debate  which  is  the  greatest  and  why.  

•  I  will  provide  you  the  large  paper  to  complete  the  silent  debate  

•  Draw  the  bell  work  t-­‐chart  on  the  poster  •  Each  partner  will  write  a  strong  opening  statement  that  explains  why  their  assigned  Ame  Japanese  period  is  the  best.  

•  Step  2:  Switch  seats  and  respond  to  the  your  partner’s  statement.      

•  You  will  have  5  minutes  to  debate  back  and  forth.    

•  Then,  we  will  write  our  final  statements  to  each  other  when  the  Amer  ends.
