1. TacticID Overview

The TacticID is a handheld Raman instrument designed for rapid identification of unknown materials based on their Raman spectral signature. The instrument has a touch screen with intuitive software for easy operation by specialists and non-specialists alike. The functions, general instrument configurations, and scanning samples are done through the embedded software TOS™ (TacticID Operating System), while data management and reporting are done by synchronizing the instrument data onto a PC via the TacticID PC software TID™. The instrument is housed in an IP65-rated case that provides protection from ingress of dust and water splashing from any direction without any harmful effect.

1.1. Safety Warning and Cautions The TacticID system contains one Class 3B laser light source. The product complies with 21 CFR 1040.10, Laser and Laser Systems. Please read through this user manual before operating the system. Upon powering on the system, two messages will be displayed for a few seconds in consecutive order. The first message is regarding the normal hazard zone for eye safety:

The second message is the ignition warning regarding safe operation when measuring dark materials:

Hold instrument a minimum of 18in (45.7cm) away from eyes

when laser is engaged

The laser in this instrument can potentially cause dark colored substances to ignite if scanned

directly. Please use with caution.

5.5. Heroin and Fentanyl Testing with TacPac™ Kit Accessory (T mode) The TacticID has the TacPac testing mode (T mode) for the rapid identification of heroin and fentanyl. Due to the fact that street drugs are often not pure, it is difficult to directly measure a Raman spectrum of it, as it is for many materials which are dark or may contain contaminants that give rise to fluorescence which interferes with the Raman measurement. To mitigate the fluorescence the TacticID T Mode operation is based on the use of Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) technology for sample preparation and measurement. The TacPac Adaptor is put on the TacticID, and the prepared sample placed in it, scanned in the T mode, and the results will display a Match or No Match. The TacPac™ Kit is a SERS analysis kit for use with the TacticID and includes a specialized adaptor, TacPac™-P substrates, plastic pipettes, spoons and sample tubes that can be used to prepare samples for measurement. Acetone is the solvent recommended for the T mode test, and is readily available from beauty supply stores, hardware stores, or laboratory supply stores.

Users must take precautions for safe material handling in preparing and handling samples for measurement with the TacticID and TacPac; wearing personal protective equipment as necessary. Users should follow their site safety procedures.
