Native American Intellectual Property Enterprise Council

•  NAIA is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. •  We support the growth of innovation and technology

among Native American people. •  We serve as an Intellectual Property incubator

Step 1: Fostering Creation & Innovation

•  12 Tribal Intellectual Property (TIP) Programs on Tribal Lands in 2011 (“12x12 TIP Initiative”) –  Tribal Centers (TIP Center) –  Tribal Intellectual Property Economic Development

•  Reaching out to Tribal College –  Sharing resources –  Technology Transfer programs –  Encouraging IP development

•  Located in Native American communities throughout the United States •  Incubators for technology and intellectual property. •  Provide a sustainable and lasting resource for improving Tribal

communities. •  These centers will be an invaluable resource to the communities they are

located in by providing: –  A clearinghouse of educational resources and literature for identifying, creating, developing,

protecting and commercializing intellectual property; –  A telephone hotline directly to the United States Patent and Trademark Office for educational

and inventor support; –  A forum in which inventors, innovators, businesspeople, and investors can meet to share

information and ideas as well as develop business relationships; –  A location for Fab Lab (fabrication laboratory) outreach that will enable inventors to engage

in the production and manufacture of prototypes at minimal cost; and –  Access to office supplies and equipment necessary to further the production or protection of

their intellectual property.

Step 2: Protecting Intellectual Property

•  USPTO and Copyright Office Registrations •  NAIA is taking down the barriers to IP registration by:

•  Offering legal expertise to guide the inventor/artist through the application process.

•  Acting as advocates for the inventor artist throughout the application process.

•  Covering the application fees for qualified applications.

•  NAIA has a goal of filing: •  100 new indigenous patent filings. •  200 indigenous copyright and trade mark filings.

Step 3: Generating Business Opportunities

•  NAIA plans to create value from Native American IP by: •  Acting as an advocate and point of contact for

organizations interested in supporting or investing in Native American IP.

•  Pursuing business deals and relationships that will monetize the IP NAIA is helping to develop.

•  Introduce monetization programs to TIP Centers by year end of 2011.

•  Utilizing and facilitating business relationships between tribes, inventors, artists, entrepreneurs, and investors.
