Dikembangkan oleh SuSE Linux GMBH

Rilis pertama S.u.S.E Linux versi 4.2 pada tahun 1996

Distro ini berbasiskan pada Slackware dengan mengadopsi RedHat Packages Manager untuk manajemen paketnya

OpenSUSE

Pada tahun 2004, Novell melakukan akuisisi terhadap SuSE Inc.

Pada bulan Agustus 2004 Novell mengumumkan bahwa SUSE Profesional akan lebih terbuka dengan diluncurkannya openSUSE Project Community

SUSE Linux 10.0 adalah rilis pertama dibawah openSUSE Project, dan sejak versi 10.2 SUSE Linux resmi berubah menjadi openSUSE
