Page 2: Music magazine double page spread analysis

Main ImageThe main image on the double page spread is of the singer songwriter Ed Sheeran. He is the main focus of the image despite the busy background. He is standing slightly slouched against a wall (I’m assuming behind the wall is the river Thames) with his hands in his pockets and he is wearing a hoddie and jeans. This is a very casual and laidback look which subtracts the seriousness from the article. His guitar is propped up against the wall next to him to emphasize the informality of the image. The casualness of the image allows the readers to connect with him and it makes the image more relatable. His facial expression is fairly serious and he is looking off to the distance as if he is in mid thought, this creates a thought-provoking image. The colours of his clothes are quite dull and blue and also quite heavily contrasted and sharpened using technology to give it a more crisp feel and make the image connect more with the background. His bright ginger hair stands out against the blue sky and white clouds as it is a focal point for the magazine and his image. it allows a connection to form between the image and the main sell-line. Moreover, the clothes represent the idea that he is an upcoming artist as he is not wearing anything fancy or designer and the image is very simple.

Sell-lineIt is strategically placed over the main image and is in big white and red letters. It is a humorous quote from Ed Sheeran from the article to draw in the reader. The different sized font to attract the most attention to the words ‘I’m’ and ‘Back’. Also word ‘ginger’ is in red which has connotations of the colour ginger and it also links the colour scheme together as there are the occasional bits of red on the page. The humour from the sell-line is due to it reflecting the song by Justin Timberlake ‘I’m bringing sexy back’, this allows the readers to relate to the sell-line and recognise the lyrical pun.

BackgroundThe background image is of London (specifically the landmarks by the river Thames) it is a very busy background which means our eyes have

more to look at and less focus is taken away from the artist. Especially the image of the famous British landmark Big Ben. The landscape image of

London will appeal to a lot of people as it is very iconic. The background is more unusual as it is very busy and colourful however the colours have been quite contrasted to bland the image and the background together

and create a level of continuity.

Colour SchemeThere are many colours used on this double-page

spread, however there is a running theme of red as it has connotations of ginger and that is a large part of

the article. The rich gold colour used in the background bring and element of success to the image especially as

he is so casual. The text has a colour scheme of red and white and that is mainly due to the colours of the

mast head of ‘Q’ magazine as it is a red background with a white Q in it. It is the colours used (mainly in the

image) differentiate from the usual colours used in a ‘Q’ Magazine. The lack of a set colour scheme allows

the reader to scan more of the page at a time.

Date and Page NumberThe year that this double-page spread was written was in September

2011 and since then he has become very successful. It is in the lower left hand corner so it does not stand out too much, however it is in white

writing so it stands out against the dark background. Moreover, the page numbers are next to it so you know what page you are on, and a

minimised version of the masthead is next to the sate and page number. This is a common thing to do in ‘Q’ magazine and just relates the spread

back to which magazine it is.

TextThe title of the article is called ‘The Hot List’ the word ‘hot’ is in red as it has connotations of fire, whilst the

word ‘list’ is in black as it is the least important word to look at. There is a big block of text which feels

disjointed on the page compared to the busyness of the background. The text is on a white box as

otherwise it would be very hard to read the text. Also its continues the running theme of white and red. The text is split into two columns white makes it very neat

and well put together. The initial letter ‘I’ (the big letter at the start of a paragraph) is very bold as red is a very bold colour that our eyes are immediately drawn to, it

also connects the red and white scheme together. Furthermore, the way it is written is the same style as

the masthead for ‘Q’ (the white letter on the red square). Additionally, in the middle of the text is ‘the

Lowdown’ which gives you the basic facts about Ed Sheeran’s album. It is quite a visual image due to the

way ‘the lowdown’ is presented on the flag-like red background. It is right in the middle of the page and if there for quite facts to grab peoples attention if they

don’t have time to read all the information.

Main ImageThe main image on the double page spread is of therapper Eminem. The image takes up half of the page emphasizing its importance. He is sat in a very casual way with his arm resting on his knee as if someone took a photo whilst he was just minding his own business. He is always wearing very comfortable clothing (however this is the way he normally dresses) it is very laid back and baggy. He is wearing a very common outfit that a rapper would wear so people can relate and when they see the image instantly recognise him and also immediately realise what sort of music he creates (especially if they have never hear of him before). He facial express is quite serious and is looking straight into the camera as if he is looking at the reader, forming a slight connection with them. The shot is taken in a way with makes his legs and feet appear larger in comparison to his upper body. This extenuates his white baggy trousers which heavily juxtapose to the black background of the spread. Additionally, the white trousers have connotations of purity and innocence whish I very unusual to see for a rapper as he portrays himself as quite tough, so it subtly implies that maybe the article will show a softer side to the rapper. His dark blue top and hat do no stand out too much, whilst the blue vest does not cover his arms revealing his tattoos which make him seem tougher. Moreover, the lack of a sell-line allows more attention to be focused on the image.

QuoteThere is no sell line on this spread so the quote becomes slightly more obvious. It is separate from the rest of the article as the writing is central and not panned to the left, and there is a large quotation mark to draw attention to it. It says ‘The truth is…’ the work truth is quite meaningful and pure and suggests that he will open up in the article. Moreover, the quote suggests that he is not sure what is going to happen and seems concerned by that thought.

TitleIn very large letter is the rapper’s stage name ‘Eminem’ and underneath is his real name ‘Marshall Bruce Mathers III’. The text is very large so it is very eye catching, however the white against the black juxtaposes and stands out a lot. The red ‘E’ is

backwards as that is his signature way of spelling it which will allow people to recognise him, and the red makes it more obvious. The small red writing of his

real name further links to the idea that he is going to open up in the article and is not hiding behind his stage name. However, it is in small writing as it is not the

focal point of the title.

Colour SchemeThere are not many colours on this page, but

the main colours are, white, red, blue and black. The white is used as it has connotations of

innocence which says a lot about the possible content of the article. Moreover, it contrasts

with the black background to make it more visible and stand out more so it is easier to see.

The red connotates danger and adds a bit of colour to the page, the red is linked together

through the red in his shoe, the red in the title and small font under the title and the

information telling you the page continues. The red draws attention to the specific parts that they want you to see (especially in the title),

however, it does not stand out as much against the black background. Then the black is very dark and deep and suggests that the article

might be quite deep and it also allows everything else to stand out more.

TextThe text has no border, it is simply white text

against a black background to reflect the simplicity of the article. Furthermore, there is

not initial letter or anything in the text to make it anything other than just a wall of text, which adds to the simplicity. The white writing allows

the text to be easily read. The text takes up one half of the page and slightly shapes around is

shoe, suggesting that he is more important and that the text will change its shape to

accommodate for the image. The red writing that reads ‘continued on page 227’ is written in

red to separate t from the rest of the article and to make it stand out more and make it more

obvious so people don’t miss it.

BackgroundThe background is completely black which is very dark and mysterious, but also

very deep, suggesting that the article will possible be quote deep. It allows everything else on the page to stand out against it so more attention can be

drawn to the important things. In addition, it is very simple so we are not distracted by looking at a busy background and we can focus on the image and the text. The background is black because when you turn onto that page you

expect a magazine to have a white page so it is more eye catching when you turn to it.

Page 4: Music magazine double page spread analysis

Main ImageThe main image on the double page spread is of the rapper lead singer of the band ‘The Pretty Reckless’. The image takes up half of the page and is a mid close up of her. She is tilting her head to the side and is holing her head. This means that her hair covers half of her face and we only see half to give it a more edge look. She is looking into the camera as though she is looking at the read. Her mouth is open and her face seems lifeless and the very dark makeup adds to this effect. She is wearing a leather jacket and a chocker which reflects her and her music as it is rock music. It also resembles what the people who listen to her music would wear as it is edgy and biker/rock. Additionally, her hair is a main focus of the image and it takes up a lot of the picture and it heavily contrasts with the black background. Furthermore, the darkness of her clothing has connotations of rock music and also death and the unknown. As this show is a mid close up and we cannot see the rest of her body, it means her face is more focused on.

Quote This is placed in the bottom left hand corner as there is no writing on this side of the page so it stand out against the image. It has a pink border/background and is written in black and white writing to fit with the girly rocker theme. The word ‘mistakes’ is in slightly larger writing (as well as black writing compared to the white writing) as it is the most eye catching words, it also allows the reader to relate to her and she makes mistakes and it makes her seem more normal and relatable.

BackgroundThe background is completely black which is very dark and mysterious, but in this case it is seem as more rock and grunge. The dark background allows the white and pink writing to

show up more as they contrast with it. Furthermore, it creates a tough image and means we focus more on her face and the title and writing as there is nothing to distract us from the

rest of the page. The simplicity of the background allows the text/font to be more creative so it is not too busy.

TitleThe title is ‘Wild Child’ and it is written in pink and white to fit with the colour scheme. The

word ‘wild’ is in pink and is in a more create and crazy font in comparison, the way it is written has connotation of something wild and out of control. The word ‘Child’ is in large

white writing as ‘child’ and white both symbolise innocence and the juxtaposition between chid and wild suggest that she is quite young but she is becoming quite reckless and

uncontrollable.

Colour SchemeThere are only really three colours on this page

and they are white, pink and black. The black symbolises mystery, and death and rock as she

is in a rock band and that is a very vital image the portrays. Whilst the white has connotations

of innocence and purity as she is only 17 and the article is called ‘wild child’ so the white

implies that she is still a child. Then the pink represents something girly and as she is clearly not very girly due to the leatherjacket, all black

etc. It creates a girly, grunge, rock chick vibe that most of the readers will find relatable. The pink and white also stand out against the black

so they can be read easily. Additionally, the pink (in this magazine) symbolises the chaotic side, whilst the white represents the more ordered

side.

TextThe text on this page is in an interview format,

as the pink represents want the interviewer asked and the white is her response. This

allows the reader to differentiate the answer to the question. The sub-heading is in fairly large

pink and white writing and it talks of her transition from a young child actress to a lead

singer in a rock band. Her name (Taylor Momsen) and her bands name (The Pretty

Reckless) are written in pink to show that they are names and therefore making them stand out against the rest of the sub-heading. The

second sentence is a question which will make the reader want to read the article. Moreover,

they mention her age to put into perspective her actions and makes the word ‘child’ more

understandable.
