The Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra (British Columbia) January 12

Micah takes classic flamenco styles and adds his unique creative flourishes to them. Flamenco expresses the emotions of the gypsies of Andalucia. Many songs describe the harsh conditions they’ve lived with over the centuries, and then there are those which are beautifully melodic. You can hear the influence of the masters Juan Martin, and Paco de Lucia in his playing. His performances are an invitation to celebrate a vibrant people and their way of life. Always mindful of the tradition of this richly expressive and culturally-rooted music, Micah plays flamenco with youthful joy, sensitivity, and a passion beyond his years.

...exciting musical growth and exploration that feeds off the instant connection they establish with their audience the minute they start playing. Gypsy Ska meets Bluegrass on the dance floor and the crowd goes nuts. - Dan Cowan, Skaspot Live Network

The Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra is a creative collaboration between Capilano College Jazz-trained bass player Peter Mynett, multi-instrumentalist and Berklee College of Music graduate Patrick M’Gonigle, Canadiana/folk singer-songwriter Kurt Loewen, world-influenced accordion/vocalist Ian Griffiths, and percussionist Paul Wolda. It’s hard to describe music in the age of cross pollination; where do you begin with the definitions when one minute a song starts in a tango, builds up with African rhythms, hooks you with some gypsy-roots-grass riffs, and pours out psychedelic waves of sound walls to a crisp finish. Early tours had them playing pop up shows across Europe, hitting the streets and festivals across Canada and the US, and carefully cultivating a solid reputation as dedicated, talented and ambitious young musicians. The past two years has seen the band headlining festivals and stages across Canada and the Pacific NorthWest. Call it gypsy-roots-folk-tango-afro-psychedelic-soul-music.

A Nickelodeon Debut!

Don’t be surprised if you’re checking the songwriting credits on this largely acoustic record to see if what you’re listening to is an original or if it is a cover. Yes, Fisher is that good. - The MusicNerd Chronicles

A Nickelodeon Debut!

As a solo singer-songwriter and with the ground-breaking trio Tamarack, James has released over thirty-five albums, and has toured relentlessly around the world. Gordon’s classic Frobisher Bay has been recorded by more than 100 different acts world-wide and was an audition piece on CTV’s “Canadian Idol”. In the last three years he’s toured in Great Britain, Cambodia, Vietnam, Japan, and all across North America. His latest CD My Stars Your Eyes is generating the best reviews and strongest airplay of his long career. It finished 2010 as the 8th top album in Canada for airplay in the singer-songwriter and folk genre.

Canadian folk-pop troubadour Jeremy Fisher first broke onto the scene a decade ago, and since then his career has been on a steady upward trajectory. Listening to Mint Juleps, the fifth album by the two-time Juno Award nominee is like ambling through the long and relaxed dog days of summer. Recorded live off the studio floor, the acoustic-driven collection of 12 songs reunites Fisher with his folk-drenched musical roots and is a veritable throwback to the golden era of the singer-songwriter. In 2001 he gained notoriety as he pedaled his way from Seattle to Halifax in support of his debut album. He stands out by creating art rooted in timeless imagery, dressed with a consummate wit, honesty and lightheartedness. He is without a doubt a modern-day folk hero who is bringing back the nearly forgotten art of making a great record from start to finish, and forging a career path that is built to endure.

Lynn Miles (Ontario) January 26

Jeremy Fisher (Ontario) February 9

James Gordon (Ontario) First Nick Headliner w/Tamarack Nov. ‘93

Known for delivering heart-rending ballads and her comfortable repartee, Eileen Laverty has performed across Canada and Ireland entertaining all ages with her upbeat messages, strong vocals, and heartfelt lyrics. She has toured with internationally renowned artists Mary Black, John McDermott, and Kenny Rogers. Her track record also includes a Prairie Music Award for Outstanding Roots Recording, several songwriting accolades, and numerous radio and television appearances. To date, Eileen has released two independent CDs which continue to draw praise at home and abroad. Her music is featured in film and television programs, and appears on several compilation CDs celebrating Canadian Folk Music.

Lynn Miles is one of the most acclaimed songwriters to cross the border since Joni Mitchell.- Dallas Morning News

Lynn Miles is one of Canada’s most accomplished singer/songwriters. She has eight albums to her credit and is the winner of multiple Canadian Folk Music Awards, and a 2003 Juno Award for Roots & Traditional Solo Album of the Year. She has always written music with unbridled feeling and vulnerability. Miles has consistently been unflinching in putting herself out there. While her melodies undulate between traditional country and folk roots, on Fall For Beauty, it’s her sensitivity to the world around her that pours itself directly into her music to make it stand out. Her astute observations of life, its trials and triumphs, are the hallmark of sincerity in her music. The gritty honesty of her music never falters - neither does her unshakeable ability to make even the most melancholy lyrics sound as if they are brimming with hope and grace. Lynn will be accompanied by Prairie Oyster guitarist Keith Glass.

Little Miss Higgins (Saskatchewan) February 23

Stints with bands like Jr. Gone Wild and Beautiful Joe led Jane to performances across the country including a two month tour opening for Jann Arden. The songs on Jane’s fourth CD, Jane Hawley & Aunt Betty’s Band, reflect her rural adventures. The song Big Sky was written while Jane and her husband moved fifty bull by horseback up off the river bank to a new summer pasture. Shopping for Love was written after experiencing the biggest social event in her community, coupon day at the local town grocery store. Jane’s music has been described as “Kitty Wells meets the Rolling Stones”.

Saskatchewan’s economy is boomin’ and so is the province’s music scene. Leading the way is blues/folk/roots singer Little Miss Higgins, who sings with the soul of a flapper. - Sandra Sperounes, Edmonton Journal

From the Great Northern Plains, Juno nominated Little Miss Higgins struts and serenades her way, guitar in hand, lips blazoned red, onto any stage. As if she just drove in off the back-road of another time with gravel dust and a sunset trailing behind her, this pocket-sized powerhouse plays music brewed up in old-time country blues sprinkled with a little jazz and maybe a hint of folk. Whether it’s songs about passion or songs about panties, she writes about real things in a rooted and poetic way. This is all too true on her fourth release, Across The Plains which won two 2011 Western Canadian Music Awards- Outstanding Blues Recording and Best Album Design. A testament to the roots of the music Higgins plays, much of her singing and guitar playing is accompanied by an old-school horn section, guitar, mandolin, banjo, upright bass, muck-bucket bass, and chunky percussion.

If there was ever an heir apparent to Leonard Cohen’s legacy - graceful poetic lyricism balancing personal darkness with the joy of human existence - it’s Curran. And her legacy will not be denied. - The Coast

A Nickelodeon Debut!

Edmonton Alberta’s own prairie balladeer Scott Cook is a tirelessly traveling songwriter who brings honesty, humour, years of roads and a deep love of humanity to his songwriting and storytelling. His straight-talking tunes weave together folk, roots, blues, country and soul influences, whether stripped down to fingerpicked acoustic guitar, banjo, ukulele, and foot percussion, or backed by his 5-piece band The Long Weekends. He has been making a full-time living at music since 2007, traveling the continent while living out of his van, and is currently touring in support of his third solo album, Moonlit Rambles.

From the fathoms, the dark solitary deeps, comes Amelia Curran’s new CD, Spectators. A meditation on frailty, restlessness, time and its finitudes, Spectators is both storm and harbour. She has charted a course through longing and loss with lyrics that face life’s beauties and terrors with disconsolate urgency. Spectators brings surprises, including brass, strings, piano, and rumbling percussion. Curran’s stark vision stands sharply against a dark, tense, shivering backdrop. Even, or perhaps especially, the love songs, cut through the bone. In particular, the earthquake heartache of San Andreas Fault, is as graceful as it is devastating. Her second CD War Brides was nominated for two East Coast Music Awards: Folk Recording of the Year and Female Solo Recording of the Year. Hunter Hunter earned Curran four 2010 ECMA nominations, a Juno Award for Roots and Traditional Album of the Year - Solo and a Canadian Folk Music Award for Solo Artist of the Year.

Sassy, smart, beautifully arranged music...Maeve’s voice captivates. - Living Tradition

A Nickelodeon Debut!

Karen has had the good fortune to play and perform with some of the most talented and eclectic performers around, from theater orchestras and Calgary Opera, to beat poets, improv world musicians, and punk alternative bands. She has embraced numerous genres and styles to add to her repertoire, always searching for new collaborations to stretch her imagination. Her current style embraces jazz, gypsy, celtic and blues and is constantly evolving. She also incorprates expression, movement, costume, and dance into her solo act to bring colour, emotion and dimension to the music. Karen has released two albums, Estryne and the newly released Pedestrian.

Even amid the wealth of gifted musicians thronging today’s Scottish folk scene, singer Maeve Mackinnon stands out as an exceptional young talent. She’s been a three-time nominee for Gaelic Singer of the Year and winner of the Up and Coming Artist of the Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards. With a repertoire spanning Gaelic and English-language material, both traditional and contemporary, she’s won acclaim equally for the eloquent emotional connection she forges with every song, communicated in a bewitchingly honeyed, husky yet vibrantly earthy voice, and for her music’s dynamic interplay of boldness and sensitivity. After winning major praise for her 2007 debut album Don’t Sing Love Songs and a prestigious Classic Album show at Celtic Connections 2008, she has now released her eagerly-awaited follow-up, Once Upon an Olive Branch. Maeve will be accompanied at the Nick by Brian McAlpine on keyboards and accordion and Ross Martin on guitar

The Steel Wheels (Virginia) April 6

Ida Red (Alberta) A Nickelodeon Debut!

Their breakout album, Red Wing, was nominated for five Independent Music Awards in 2010 and with their latest album, Lay Down, Lay Low, The Steel Wheels have continued to capture audiences across the country with their heady brew of original soulful mountain music and their deep commitment to roots and community. Based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, this dynamic four-piece string band marries old-time musical traditions with their own innovative sound and lifestyle, generating a truly magnetic revival. The band is renowned for their raw energy and chemistry on stage, where they often cluster tightly around a single microphone to adorn Trent Wagler’s unmistakable tenor with bell-clear four-part harmonies inspired by their shared Mennonite heritage. Add to this Eric Brubaker’s lively and evocative fiddle, Brian Dickel’s grounded yet buoyant upright bass, and Jay Lapp’s signature mandolin style, and it’s no surprise that The Steel Wheels have enthralled the contemporary Americana scene.

Robbie Bankes and William Lynch met 4 years ago after discovering by coincidence a mutual passion for folk and Celtic music. They first embarked on their musical journey, under the name Robbie & Will, busking at the market every other weekend, and have since pleased the Calgary area with their energized sets. Always on the search for new genres and sounds to explore, they love to shake things up with off beat tunes and improvisation. Now known as Ida Red, they have joined forces with fiddler Brigitte Ouellet to present an inventive approach to traditional music and original tunes and songs.

A Nickelodeon Debut!

There were many points during their performance that their perfectly executed vocal harmonies or master level musicianship took one’s breath away. They are so much more than words can describe...I believe everyone in our audience will agree that we tasted a little bit of music heaven tonight. - Alan Vajdos Rear Window Listening Room

Patrons’ Night! (Alberta and ... ?) April 27 Have you ever thought, “I’d love to play a song on the Nick stage!”? Now’s your chance. We will invite volunteers, season ticket holders and other Nick patrons to sign up in advance, to perform for our always-appreciative audience.

We currently envision each performer doing 3 songs (15 minutes) but, depending on the response, we may reduce this time to accommodate more performances. The club format will remain the same, with three sets of music followed by a break. Each set will feature multiple performers. Current season ticket holders will qualify for admittance. Advance tickets will be sold at a reduced price for this evening. More details to follow at www.thenick.ca
