What’s AheadMOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women’s basketball team begins a four-game homestand this week with a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference contests. The Dragons open on Friday against Upper Iowa at 6 p.m. and wrap up the weekend Saturday at home against Winona State.

MSUM is 10-8 overall and 6-8 in the NSIC.

The Dragons have never lost to Upper Iowa in women’s basketball, holding a 14-0 series lead. MSUM will face Winona State for a 71st time with the Dragons leading the series 42-28.

About MSUMThe Dragons split on the road last weekend. They beat Minnesota Duluth, 75-70 on Friday, thanks to 28 points from senior Morgan Zabel. A night later, the Dragons fell to St. Cloud State, 93-72 despite 21 points and 13 rebounds from senior forward Megan Strese.

Zabel, who is now at 964 career points, leads the Dragons at 15.1 points per game. Senior forward Megan Strese is averaging 12.4 points and a team-best 8.3 rebounds per game, while sophomore guard Meghan Roehrich is averaging 11.9 points per game. Senior guard Haley Thomforde, who is now seventh all-time in assists in school history (301), is averaging 3.1 assists per game. Zabel leads with 19 steals while Thomforde has 11 blocks.

The Dragons are shooting 40.9 percent from the field, including 34.7 percent from three-point range. The Dragons outrebound their opponents 41.0-33.2. MSUM scores 71.1 points per game. The Dragons allow 69.8 points per game and are holding teams to 41.5 percent shooting from the field this season.

Karla Nelson is her 14th season as MSUM’s head coach with a record of 234-156 at the school.

About Upper IowaUpper Iowa is 5-13 overall and 4-10 in the NSIC. The Peacocks have lost eight of their last nine games, including home losses to Concordia-St. Paul (71-65) and Minnesota State (87-61) last weekend.

Junior Whitney Kieffer leads Upper Iowa at 16.3 points per game. Junior Lauren Buck averages 10.4 while senior Sam Thrapp averages 10.1. Buck leads at 6.9 rebounds per game while Thrapp is at 4.5 assists per contest. Kieffer averages 2.1 steals per game.

The Peacocks are scoring 64.6 points per game and are shooting 40.4 percent from the field. They outrebound their opponents, 37.2-34.2. Teams score 72.1 points per game against Upper Iowa and are shooting 44.5 percent from the field against the Peacocks.

Carol Russell is in her fourth season as Upper Iowa’s head coach with a record of 16-84 at the school.

About Winona StateWinona State is 8-10 overall and 4-10 in the NSIC. The Warriors, who will face Northern State prior to facing MSUM, have lost seven in a row, including home losses to Minnesota State (77-53) and Concordia-St. Paul (65-57) last weekend.

Senior Abby Busch is the lone Warrior averaging in double figures at 15.3 points per game. She also leads the team at 7.4 rebounds per game. Tessa Wells leads at 51 assists for the season while Connor Nagle has 29 steals.

Winona State scores 60.8 points per game and shoots 39 percent from the field. The Warriors are being outrebounded by their opponents 35.9-35.6. Teams score 58.9 points per game against the Warriors and shoot 38.3 percent from the field against them.

COACHING RESUMEKarla Nelson is in her 13th season as the Head Coach of the women’s basketball program and her 19th season as a member of the program’s coaching staff.

The fastest coach in MSU Moorhead basketball history to reach the 200-win plateau, Nelson has accumulated a record of 208-136 entering the 2012-13 season.

She has a school record 208 career victories, 12 consecutive winning seasons, three trips to the NCAA Division II post-season play, two national statistical titles, conference and region Coach of the Year endorsements and a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship. Nelson is fourth among NSIC coaches in total wins at their respective schools.

Nelson has also coached 27 all-conference honorees in 12 seasons. She led Angie Jetvig to four All-American teams including two consecutive Daktronics All-American honors in 2011 and 2012. Nelson also helped Megan Rettke and Alison Nash-Gerlach to second team Daktronics All-American honors in 2010.

In 2004-05 Nelson and the Dragons claimed their first NSIC outright title, cracked the nation’s Top-25 for the first time and received a NCAA Division II regional tournament invitation, the first time in the Head Coach’s career. MSUM finished 24-7 overall and set a Dragon single season record victories. Nelson was saluted as the NSIC Coach of the Year and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Region 7 Coach of the Year as well. The WBCA Region 7 Coach of the Year honor was her second, the first coming during the 2002-03 season.

The first coach at MSUM to debut with back-to-back winning campaigns, Nelson and the Dragons made their first appearance in the NCAA Division II North Central Regional in 2004-05, returned in 2006-07, and qualified for a third time in 2008-09. The Dragons of 2004-05 led the nation in rebounding for a second time in five years after a fifth place finish in 2003-04.The 2006-07 team reached the 20-win plateau for the fifth time in program history and made a serious run for the NSIC title, placing second in the league tournament and suffered an NCAA Tournament opening round loss to the University of North Dakota.

In 2008-09, the Dragons were ranked as high as 13th in the nation, after going on an 11-0 run to open the season. The season ended in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, after picking up the first post-season win in program history.Nelson prodded her first club to a 15-12 overall record in 2000-01, the first winning season at MSUM in six years that also included a NSIC playoff invitation. The Dragons’ trip to the NSIC Tournament in 2011-12 was the 13th straight time to accomplish the feat. Only two other teams have done so, Winona State and Wayne State.

Nelson served six seasons as the Dragons’ number one assistant from 1994-2000. When Jean Roise resigned in March of 2000, MSU Moorhead Director of Athletics Dr. Katy Wilson quickly promoted Nelson to the top post.

COACHING RESUME• Karla Nelson was promoted to head coach in March of 2000, becoming the 12th Women’s Basketball Coach in the 46 year history of the program. • 2012-13 is her 19th year in coaching at MSUM and the 13th as a head coach.• The fastest coach in MSUM basketball history to reach 200 wins.• Nelson served as a coach at East Grand Forks and Grand Forks Public Schools for three years prior to arriving at MSUM.• Played four seasons of basketball at the University of North Dakota, twice being honored as UND’s Best Defensive Player.
